The prison officer who died today almost two weeks after a dissident | :00:00. | :00:09.
republican bombing served the entire community, | :00:10. | :00:10.
Adrian Ismay had been recovering and had attended a passing out | :00:11. | :00:18.
ceremony for new recruits just last Friday. | :00:19. | :00:20.
The 52 year old was a father of three, and a grandfather, | :00:21. | :00:23.
- it's thought he died from a heart attack. | :00:24. | :00:25.
Our Home Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney reports. | :00:26. | :00:35.
Is that these cards freeze by dissident republicans who put the | :00:36. | :00:41.
bomb under the car of Adrian Ismay. Just yards from his home today, | :00:42. | :00:44.
floral tributes were placed in memory of a man who had been a | :00:45. | :00:49.
prison officer for 28 years. It was in this spot that the bomb exploded | :00:50. | :00:54.
as he drove to work 11 days ago. He was said to have escaped death | :00:55. | :00:58.
because the device dislodge when he drove over a speed RAM. The | :00:59. | :01:03.
52-year-old was released from hospital a few days later. His death | :01:04. | :01:15.
has come as a shock to his family, friends and former colleagues, just | :01:16. | :01:17.
last week the police said his injuries were not as serious as | :01:18. | :01:19.
first thought. They were described as neither life-threatening or | :01:20. | :01:21.
life-changing and he was expected to make a full recovery. It is | :01:22. | :01:24.
understood the prison officers suffered a heart attack at home this | :01:25. | :01:27.
morning and he was treated by paramedics before going to hospital | :01:28. | :01:31.
where it is believed he suffered a further seizure and died a short | :01:32. | :01:35.
time later. It has not yet been established whether his death was a | :01:36. | :01:39.
direct result of the injuries and drama he suffered in the bomb | :01:40. | :01:45.
attack. There will have to be further investigations. We should | :01:46. | :01:49.
not lose sight of the human tragedy and deep grief and sadness that has | :01:50. | :01:55.
been visited on this family, and other family, unnecessarily | :01:56. | :01:58.
traumatised and grief brought to bear upon them because of people | :01:59. | :02:02.
using violence in this way which is inexcusable. One man has already | :02:03. | :02:07.
appeared in court charged with attempted murder. The officer | :02:08. | :02:11.
leading the investigation released CCTV footage and photographs of two | :02:12. | :02:15.
cars that police believe were used by those who carried out the attack. | :02:16. | :02:21.
I am keen to hear from anyone who might have information about the | :02:22. | :02:25.
movement of these vehicles. The first one is a red Citroen C three | :02:26. | :02:29.
which I believe was used by those planting the device at around 2:20am | :02:30. | :02:34.
in the early hours of Friday March the 4th. The second vehicle is a | :02:35. | :02:39.
silver Skoda Fabio and it is my understanding and I believe that a | :02:40. | :02:45.
male was dropped off from this vehicle in the pilot Street area of | :02:46. | :02:50.
Belfast in the docks area, around 3am on the morning of Friday March | :02:51. | :02:53.
the 4th and I am appealing for anyone who saw this or who knows the | :02:54. | :02:57.
identity of this man to come forward to police. The Justice Minister | :02:58. | :03:02.
spoke of his shock at news of the death. We thought he was making a | :03:03. | :03:07.
recovery, he was in good form, he went to Hydebank Wood to see his | :03:08. | :03:11.
most recent recruits passing out last Friday and then to hear today, | :03:12. | :03:17.
the news is devastating and our thoughts are with his family. Prison | :03:18. | :03:22.
sources say that some dissident republicans in Maghaberry celebrated | :03:23. | :03:25.
the news of the death of Adrian Ismay Anton did prison officers by | :03:26. | :03:27.
smoking cigars in the exercise yard. Meanwhile the First and Deputy first | :03:28. | :03:34.
ministers discussed the death of Adrian Ismay with President Obama | :03:35. | :03:36.
in Washington a short time ago. They're in the US capitol this week | :03:37. | :03:39.
as part of an investment trip. From there our economics | :03:40. | :03:42.
and Business editor John Campbell The ministers are here to sell the | :03:43. | :03:56.
new Northern Ireland. The promotion of a forward-looking investment | :03:57. | :03:58.
location, but this morning there was a dark echo of the past and that | :03:59. | :04:03.
formed part of their discussion with the President. Obviously we | :04:04. | :04:07.
reflected on the death of Adrian Ismay today. The fact that we were | :04:08. | :04:11.
creating hope in Northern Ireland and that is what we were all about | :04:12. | :04:16.
and we talked about investment and economic development and we had | :04:17. | :04:19.
quite a long time to discuss all of those matters and we are grateful | :04:20. | :04:29.
that he gave us that amount of time. We are deeply saddened by the death | :04:30. | :04:32.
of Adrian Ismay. We are thinking of his wife and his three daughters at | :04:33. | :04:36.
this time. We emphasised to the President and all those in | :04:37. | :04:39.
authorities here in the United States that we are going to stand | :04:40. | :04:43.
together and we know that the strategy of these people who are | :04:44. | :04:46.
committed to try and plunge us back to the past is to destroy everything | :04:47. | :04:50.
we have built up collectively over the past 20 years and we will not | :04:51. | :04:54.
allow that to happen. The ministers seem determined that the purpose of | :04:55. | :04:58.
their visit would not be around and Martin McGuiness will stay here for | :04:59. | :05:03.
a dinner, while the First Minister travelled to Silicon Valley for a | :05:04. | :05:11.
meeting with potential investors. The head of the Prison Service will | :05:12. | :05:13.
be live on good morning Ulster tomorrow morning after the eight | :05:14. | :05:15.
o'clock news. The Education Minister says he's | :05:16. | :05:17.
concerned about the ongoing issues at De La Salle College in west | :05:18. | :05:20.
Belfast where today up to 50 sixth form pupils walked out in protest | :05:21. | :05:23.
at the number of teachers off sick. At least 24 teachers | :05:24. | :05:26.
were absent again today, It's understood some staff have | :05:27. | :05:28.
expressed concerns about how Our Education Correspondent | :05:29. | :05:32.
Robbie Meredith reports. An extraordinary sight in the middle | :05:33. | :05:46.
of the school day. Sixth formers leaving their own school due to what | :05:47. | :05:50.
they say are concerns about their own education. There are not enough | :05:51. | :05:55.
teachers to cover the classes and it is affecting everyone, we are | :05:56. | :06:00.
falling behind, I am studying three A-levels and I have got substitutes | :06:01. | :06:04.
and I am mindful for that and I am grateful that there is someone | :06:05. | :06:10.
teaching me, but at the same time, there is not the emotional | :06:11. | :06:13.
connection and a friendly connection there as there was with the original | :06:14. | :06:18.
features. Around 20 worried parents had gathered at the school gates. My | :06:19. | :06:23.
son is doing physical education and they are not getting to do a lot of | :06:24. | :06:28.
that at the moment. Yesterday he came home and the hall was cordoned | :06:29. | :06:31.
off and they were not allowed to go in and they had to go to study hall. | :06:32. | :06:36.
He needs the two grades to get into Queens. I am very concerned and at | :06:37. | :06:44.
one point he was talking about dropping out and I do not want him | :06:45. | :06:47.
to do that. I understand that at least 24 teachers out of a full-time | :06:48. | :06:50.
staff of 70 were absent again today. At one point to parents did go in | :06:51. | :06:55.
for a meeting with the printable. I asked if the situation could be | :06:56. | :07:01.
resolved and and she did not say yes or no. I said because this is nearly | :07:02. | :07:07.
a year and I do not feel it will be resolved any time soon. This is | :07:08. | :07:11.
still a fluid situation, I went into the school briefly but no one was | :07:12. | :07:15.
available for interview and a member of staff told me that the school was | :07:16. | :07:19.
fully functioning but given the high levels of staff absence and the | :07:20. | :07:23.
walk-out by pupils at is hard to see how there cannot be some disruption. | :07:24. | :07:30.
The pupils did later returned to school but this afternoon the union | :07:31. | :07:33.
said it would ballot its teachers for further targeted industrial | :07:34. | :07:36.
action so there is no sign that the ongoing problems will be resolved | :07:37. | :07:37.
quickly. A group protesting over the closure | :07:38. | :07:43.
of a substance abuse project in Belfast have held a rally this | :07:44. | :07:46.
evening outside its headquarters The Forum for Action | :07:47. | :07:49.
on Substance Abuse or FASA employed The group's finances | :07:50. | :07:52.
are being investigated Supporters say they will continue | :07:53. | :07:56.
to campaign for services We want to make all the other | :07:57. | :08:10.
services in the area aware that potentially there are lot of | :08:11. | :08:13.
vulnerable people and that they will need that extra help from other | :08:14. | :08:17.
services and other services have acknowledged that they are willing | :08:18. | :08:22.
to up to the plate and to play their part in supporting us and supporting | :08:23. | :08:24.
these people. The leader of Ni21, Basil McCrea has | :08:25. | :08:26.
said he is leaving politics. The MLA told the Belfast Telegraph | :08:27. | :08:29.
he would not contest the assembly election and was seeking | :08:30. | :08:32.
a new career in business The party imploded on the eve | :08:33. | :08:34.
of the elections two years ago when Mr McCrea fell out with deputy | :08:35. | :08:38.
leader John McCallister over whether the party should | :08:39. | :08:41.
define itself as unionist. Earlier this month, the assembly | :08:42. | :08:43.
standards commissioner dismissed all complaints of misconduct | :08:44. | :08:45.
brought against Mr McCrea. Almost two million pounds is to be | :08:46. | :08:55.
spent inspiring the next generation The money will provide environmental | :08:56. | :08:58.
projects that will be made available to fifteen thousand | :08:59. | :09:02.
young people here. One such project has seen Atlantic | :09:03. | :09:04.
salmon being raised in a primary school classroom and released | :09:05. | :09:07.
in a Belfast river. Our Environment Correspondent | :09:08. | :09:09.
Conor Macauley reports. On a lovely spring day, school is no | :09:10. | :09:26.
place for nature lovers, so these pupils near Lisburn have taken to | :09:27. | :09:32.
the outdoor classroom. There are a river near Belfast to release salmon | :09:33. | :09:36.
they have been baby-sitting for months. I just love watching nature | :09:37. | :09:42.
grow and watching how they survive and learning more about them. How do | :09:43. | :09:48.
they grow? We know how we grow but how do they grow? They are living in | :09:49. | :09:53.
their wild habitat. It is fascinating. While looking after | :09:54. | :10:01.
these fish the children have been learning about them, bringing their | :10:02. | :10:06.
life cycle alive. Now the day has come to say goodbye. I think the | :10:07. | :10:11.
children, having cared for and nurtured the animals, will take a | :10:12. | :10:18.
very close interest in all things to do with concentration in the future. | :10:19. | :10:22.
The water in the classroom tank is water from the river. We are not | :10:23. | :10:27.
exactly sure we think the salmon are using the chemical composition to | :10:28. | :10:30.
help guide them back to the spawning spot after a couple of years in the | :10:31. | :10:38.
Atlantic Ocean. All this is part of a new project that will see 15,000 | :10:39. | :10:42.
young people in courage to develop a love of nature, the lottery money | :10:43. | :10:48.
will fund environmental schemes and the Belfast health partnership. It | :10:49. | :10:52.
is all about the Next Generation, to encourage young people to learn | :10:53. | :10:56.
about their environment, to be excited and passionate, they are the | :10:57. | :10:59.
future ambassadors, the future, they will be standing up and making the | :11:00. | :11:08.
policies and decisions and making a difference. They have been taught | :11:09. | :11:11.
about the harsh side of nature, the risks the fish will face like | :11:12. | :11:14.
predators and pollution. They know that only 3% of them will return to | :11:15. | :11:19.
spawn in a couple of years and in this case, that is just five adult | :11:20. | :11:21.
salmon. Hollywood star Liam Neeson has | :11:22. | :11:24.
lent his support to a Co Antrim hurling team in all Ireland final | :11:25. | :11:26.
in Dublin on Saint Patrick's day. Ruairi Og Cushendall will take | :11:27. | :11:29.
on Na Piarsaigh of County Limerick The big man played hurling as a boy | :11:30. | :11:32.
in his home town of Ballymena Bring the trophy home, boys. I | :11:33. | :11:47.
wonder who this will go to next! Now here's Cecilia Daly | :11:48. | :11:53.
with the weather forecast. Good evening. It has been another | :11:54. | :12:03.
lovely day and over the last couple of nights, we have had some stunning | :12:04. | :12:09.
sunsets, because we have been starved of sunshine, we are really | :12:10. | :12:13.
enjoying our sunsets. Tonight, with the clear skies, it means it will | :12:14. | :12:17.
get quite cold, particularly in the West were skies are likely to stay | :12:18. | :12:21.
clearest for longest, there will be areas of cloud and there will be | :12:22. | :12:26.
missed and fog in places as we get quite low temperatures across parts | :12:27. | :12:32.
of Fermanagh and Tyrone. Not as clear a start, Gray in places, but | :12:33. | :12:37.
it will hopefully brighten up quickly. He prepared for missed and | :12:38. | :12:41.
low cloud tomorrow, it will gradually brighten as the day goes | :12:42. | :12:46.
on, the best of the sunshine is in the West and across the Republic of | :12:47. | :12:50.
Ireland, the western counties will have the best sunshine, western | :12:51. | :12:55.
Scotland will enjoy sunny welder -- but missed and low cloud and the | :12:56. | :12:59.
rest of Scotland and low cloud and drizzle will affect Eastern counties | :13:00. | :13:04.
of England, West is best tomorrow, the best of the sunshine and the | :13:05. | :13:08.
highest temperatures will be there. We saw a couple of 14 degrees across | :13:09. | :13:14.
the country, but it will be a little bit down on today. St Patrick 's Day | :13:15. | :13:19.
will be cooler and cloudy but it will still be dry with hints of | :13:20. | :13:24.
brightness in parts of the West. The settled weather continues heading | :13:25. | :13:26.
towards the weekend with plenty of dry weather but more cloud around | :13:27. | :13:30.
and a bit cooler. Our next BBC Newsline is at six | :13:31. | :13:31.
twenty five in the morning Don't miss YOUR chance | :13:32. | :13:34.
to be at the starting line | :13:35. | :13:49. |
