Hundreds of thousands of people turned out to watch

the Easter Rising commemorations in Dublin.

The military parade was the largest ever staged in the Republic,

as our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison reports.

Simple, stirring, sombre and solemn -

just some of the words that describe today's commemoration,

which involved the laying of a wreath.

It was here that the leaders of the Easter Rising were executed,

The parade, it is estimated, was seen by hundreds of thousands.

It paused outside the GPO for the main event.

Present were current and former leaders as well as

No Unionist representative was on the podium.

Children from the four provinces laid flowers at a symbolic gesture

of the unshakeable resolve to live together in harmony and peace.

An army officer re-enacted the Proclamation of the Republic.

We hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a sovereign independent

state and we give our lives and the lives of our comrades

in arms to the cause of its freedom, welfare and exaltation

When the president laid a wreath outside the GPO,

he did in memory of all those who died in the rising.

Spectators appreciated the overall tone of the commemoration.

It is a new Ireland we see these days so it was lovely to be here.

Being here with my family... And the atmosphere.

We owe it to them, so it is only right they be commemorated.

The event ended with a fly-past and a 21-gun salute.

Thousands of people have lined the streets of West Belfast

for a parade to mark the centenary of the Rising.

The parade, with many wearing period costumes,

began at Divis Tower, before it made its way

to the republican plot at Milltown Cemetery.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams told the gathering, the peace process

and the Good Friday agreement had marked a historic shift in politics.

Hurts must be healed, divisions ended and the scourge

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people turned out to watch a parade

associated with dissident Republicans in County Tyrone.

About 50 people dressed in paramilitary-style uniforms led

A service of remembrance for the 116 British soldiers who died

during the Easter Rising has been held in County Down.

The commemoration was organised by the Royal British Legion.

a wreath was laid on the grave of Sandy McClelland,

who served with the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was 18 years old when he was killed in Dublin in 1916.

Attending the event, UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said

unionists must not ignore the Easter Rising centenary.

It is important that we do not stick our fingers in our ears

and pretend these things never happen and will go away.

They happened and impact on us today and we have to face up to it.

There are different narratives depending on your historical

perspective and that is the way history is.

Let us not deny anybody else their perspective.

Let us have respect in the way we promote our own.

Sport, and in golf, Rory McIlroy lost his grip on the WGC Match Play

Hello. You will want a duvet tonight because it is chilly. Temperatures

across the border are close to freezing and in the countryside

where skies are clear, down 2-3dC. A frosty start to Easter Monday with

the odd stretch of eyes possible in untreated areas. -- ice. A big

improvement on today. Plenty of dry weather with some sun. A fair amount

of cloud which breaks up and we will see some sunshine coming through but

it will bring a risk of scattered showers towards the north-west.

Across Ireland, a big improvement with plenty of dry and sunny

weather. Scattered showers developing in the south-west. Storm

Katie will bring strong winds for southern and eastern areas. The

winds eased through the day and across Britain it will be largely

dry with decent amount of sunshine. Towards the south-west, showers will

develop later with temperatures across the board about normal, 13

Celsius the best towards the south-east of England. For Northern

Ireland into tomorrow at noon, some decent sunshine amounts. If you

scattered showers, not completely dry. Temperatures at best nine or 10

Celsius in sunshine. In sheltered areas away from wind, not too bad.

Into Tuesday, it will remain unsettled with low pressure in

control. Some rain out there. Not all the time. Keep your umbrella

handy. Some sun as well. South-westerly winds stay with us,

Calder, 7-9dC the best. The rest of the week, low pressure in control, a

view scattered showers. When is not too strong with some sunshine.

Overnight, chilly. If you frosty starts this week.
