First tonight news from the United States that no-one

is to be charged in connection with the collapse of a balcony

in Berkeley in California last year that killed six young people

and injured seven others, most of them Irish.

The District Attorney said her office had concluded

Five Irish students and one American died last June when an apartment

balcony at the Library Gardens complex in Berkeley collapsed

as young people celebrated a 21st birthday.

Another seven young people were injured, some seriously.

After a nine-month investigation, the California District Attorney's

office now says it will not be bringing any criminal charges

as there was "insufficient evidence" to bring manslaughter charges

against any one individual or company.

The investigation had already concluded the balcony collapsed

because "water had been trapped in the deck" during the construction

phase which had led to "eventual and extensive dry rot damage".

Separately civil legal proceedings by the families of those killed

and injured are continuing against 30 companies connected

with the constrtction and maintainance of the building.

The level crossing on Lake Street in Lurgan.

It's right next to the nationalist Kilwilkie estate.

Yesterday a van was set on fire here in the early hours,

and in the afternoon bins were pulled onto the line.

It's the mainline between Belfast and Dublin.

But it's becoming a familiar story to hear that's it's closed.

People in Logan are used to having to be patient while the trains go

through the centre of the town but that those commuters, regulate

First time buyers struggling to save enough money for a deposit

on a home could get help from a new scheme called

Instead of paying rent with no prospect of a return,

tenants receive 25% of their money back after three years to use

as a down payment to purchase a property.

The scheme is funded by the Department for

Social Development and it aims to help people on low incomes to get

paying rent for three years, they receive 25% back to use as a deposit

on a mortgage. There is a shortage of mortgages and the availability of

finance right across Northern Ireland services initiative for us

to get down to that situation and help able to get in and aspire and

the dreams of getting a home of getting a home either. That can be

by a cone ownership or getting the property through a mortgage. They

are funding 100 new homes across Northern Ireland at a cost at 12 and

a half million pounds. It is hoped it will help those who are currently

renting take the first step towards owning their first home.
