Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
The family clergyman of a student killed in a hit-and-run incident has | :00:00. | :00:14.
described her as good natured, full of fun and a person who faced | :00:15. | :00:17.
19-year-old Lesley-Ann McCarragher was jogging at Millford | :00:18. | :00:24.
on the outskirts of Armagh when she was struck by a car | :00:25. | :00:27.
Earlier today a teenager appeared in court accused of killing her. | :00:28. | :00:32.
The court was told the 17-year-old boy went to the police that night | :00:33. | :00:36.
and said he had sold the car less than an hour before the crash. | :00:37. | :00:39.
Our reporter in the South-East Gordon Adair reports. | :00:40. | :00:45.
Lesley-Ann McCarragher was jogging along this hard shoulder just a few | :00:46. | :00:48.
hundred yards from her home when she was hit and | :00:49. | :00:50.
She was looking forward to life and running out of the house looking | :00:51. | :01:06.
life in the eye and want to go run and then this happened. Nobody | :01:07. | :01:09.
expect it had. A complete, they are in shock and they're heart broken. | :01:10. | :01:12.
Police believe the car, a white Saab, was being driven | :01:13. | :01:14.
by a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named because of his age. | :01:15. | :01:18.
The accused had bought the car on Friday, but says he sold 45 | :01:19. | :01:21.
A witness described seeing the white Saab on Saturday | :01:22. | :01:30.
being driven at speeds they estimated at up to 90mph. | :01:31. | :01:32.
They said it appeared to be racing another car, | :01:33. | :01:34.
The police are still searching for that car and its driver. | :01:35. | :01:39.
A detectives told the court that at one point the white Saab went | :01:40. | :01:42.
to undertake another vehicle, it mounted the hard shoulder, | :01:43. | :01:44.
and it was there that it struck Lesley-Ann. | :01:45. | :01:48.
She was airlifted to hospital, but died from her | :01:49. | :01:50.
The accused handed himself in to police on Saturday night, | :01:51. | :01:57.
and the car was found in a garage rented by his brother. | :01:58. | :02:02.
He is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, | :02:03. | :02:04.
failing to stop or report an accident, and having no | :02:05. | :02:06.
The detective revealed that on Saturday, the woman who had sold | :02:07. | :02:14.
the car received a text from the accused's mobile phone. | :02:15. | :02:17.
Urging her to tell the police if they ask that she had sold | :02:18. | :02:21.
Initially when the police contacted the accused on that mobile phone | :02:22. | :02:28.
He later admitted he had bought it on Friday, | :02:29. | :02:32.
but claimed he had sold it before the incident. | :02:33. | :02:34.
Today some of those who knew Lesley Ann, a former head girl | :02:35. | :02:38.
of the City of Armagh High School paid tribute to her. | :02:39. | :02:41.
She was compassionate and she always had a wonderful sense of humour. | :02:42. | :02:44.
She had completed every task she ever undertook to the highest | :02:45. | :02:46.
possible standard and indeed was one of our top achievers in her GCSEs. | :02:47. | :03:01.
I baptised Lesley-Ann. She faced life with enthusiasm. She was one of | :03:02. | :03:09.
those girls who was good fun and good natured. | :03:10. | :03:16.
Her death brings to 17 the number of people killed | :03:17. | :03:18.
Several political party leaders here, including | :03:19. | :03:21.
the First Minister Arlene Foster, have published their tax returns | :03:22. | :03:24.
as pressure grows on politicians over their financial affairs. | :03:25. | :03:27.
The Prime Minister David Cameron decided to detail his tax returns | :03:28. | :03:31.
to try to defuse a row over his personal finances. | :03:32. | :03:33.
Our political correspondent Enda McClafferty reports. | :03:34. | :03:39.
Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt wasted no time getting his tax | :03:40. | :03:42.
affairs in the right order as he prepared to publish them. | :03:43. | :03:45.
His income from the Assembly is just over ?52,500 | :03:46. | :03:51.
I have no difficulty publishing the tax returns. | :03:52. | :04:00.
There is a genuine public concern that elected representatives | :04:01. | :04:02.
are seen to be open and transparent in all their dealings | :04:03. | :04:05.
This afternoon the First Minister, Arlene Foster, published her latest | :04:06. | :04:10.
tax returns, which showed she earned just over ?78,000 from | :04:11. | :04:12.
the Assembly, while her office expenses total ?60,500. | :04:13. | :04:23.
the Assembly, while her office expenses total ?65,500. | :04:24. | :04:25.
The Deputy First Minister, the Alliance leader and the SDLP | :04:26. | :04:29.
leader said they will also put the tax affairs | :04:30. | :04:31.
I will gladly publish my very boring tax returns and I think | :04:32. | :04:38.
There are no offshore accounts here, and I think everybody | :04:39. | :04:42.
who is a senior politician in this country should do the same. | :04:43. | :04:45.
I would love to see the Tory Cabinet do the same. | :04:46. | :04:50.
But how much will the figures reveal? | :04:51. | :04:53.
This tax expert believes the paperwork will | :04:54. | :04:54.
In terms of the information put into the public domain, | :04:55. | :05:06.
To what purpose is it going to be used? | :05:07. | :05:15.
Is it really going to achieve anything really? | :05:16. | :05:17.
So, the question is will the decision by our political | :05:18. | :05:19.
leaders to publish their tax returns reassure the man and woman | :05:20. | :05:22.
I think you have to have transparency and people need | :05:23. | :05:25.
They are around looking for our vote, so we want to know | :05:26. | :05:33.
who we are voting for for and what they are up to? | :05:34. | :05:36.
And will you trust politicians more if you concede documents like this? | :05:37. | :05:39.
I think the trust for politicians disappeared a long time ago. | :05:40. | :05:45.
Would you trust politicians more if you could see their tax dealings? | :05:46. | :05:48.
I don't trust them anyway. | :05:49. | :05:49.
Not really. It is a brave wage he is getting. If it were my P60, my wife | :05:50. | :06:05.
doesn't seen see my P60! LAUGHTER | :06:06. | :06:06.
The Prime Minister hopes the publication of his tax | :06:07. | :06:18.
returns will defuse the row over his finances. | :06:19. | :06:20.
It remains to be seen what Tom if any, will be the fallout here. | :06:21. | :06:28.
A long awaited inquest into the death of an 11-year-boy | :06:29. | :06:30.
has been told that the soldier who shot him had a "clear view | :06:31. | :06:33.
Francis Rowntree was hit by a rubber bullet in west Belfast | :06:34. | :06:37.
1972 was one of the worst years in the history of the Troubles. | :06:38. | :06:45.
The inquest into the death of Francis Rowntree was told | :06:46. | :06:47.
Giving evidence today, a friend of Francis', | :06:48. | :06:56.
He told the inquest that while he could hear disturbances | :06:57. | :07:06.
nearby, there were no cars on fire or rioting where they were. | :07:07. | :07:10.
He said a group of up to six of them were making their way | :07:11. | :07:15.
through the Divis flats complex when they came across | :07:16. | :07:17.
Francis, he said, was more curious than the rest of them. | :07:18. | :07:21.
He started to walk towards the vehicle. | :07:22. | :07:23.
He said the 11-year-old was just ten yards from the Saracen when he heard | :07:24. | :07:30.
He said Francis seemed to be lifted off his feet and jerked backwards. | :07:31. | :07:38.
Counsel for the Ministry of Defence asked him | :07:39. | :07:44.
Yes, I was a serial rioter, he said, I took days of school to riot. | :07:45. | :07:57.
Asked if Francis ever went rioting with him, no, | :07:58. | :07:59.
He was just curious to find out what was going on. | :08:00. | :08:06.
Asked if Francis was the sort of person who would get involved | :08:07. | :08:09.
in rioting, his brother said today he was never in trouble | :08:10. | :08:12.
He was more involved or interested in sport, | :08:13. | :08:25.
If they were fighting outside the door, he wouldn't have went out. | :08:26. | :08:37.
There have been more talks in Dublin this evening as politicians | :08:38. | :08:40.
continue to struggle to form a new government. | :08:41. | :08:42.
Representatives from Fine Gael and Fianna Fail took part | :08:43. | :08:44.
in what were described as cordial talks. | :08:45. | :08:46.
There will be more discussions tomorrow. | :08:47. | :08:47.
Earlier today Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the new political reality | :08:48. | :08:50.
The general election result requires a new way of doing politics. To | :08:51. | :09:03.
provide stable and lasting Government. A complex decision given | :09:04. | :09:09.
by the people requires a different kind of answer. A different kind of | :09:10. | :09:14.
response and big bold response in the sense of the issues that we face | :09:15. | :09:16.
up ahead. The Irish Open will not now be | :09:17. | :09:19.
staged next year in County Fermanagh The Lough Erne Resort | :09:20. | :09:22.
near Enniskillen had been scheduled to host the golf tournament, | :09:23. | :09:26.
but a coastal links course, possibly Portstewart, | :09:27. | :09:28.
will be chosen instead. Our south west reporter | :09:29. | :09:30.
Julian Fowler has more. The Lough Erne Resort held big | :09:31. | :09:42.
eslents, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke played a challenge match on | :09:43. | :09:47.
the lakeland course in 2010. And the G8 Summit of world leaders was here | :09:48. | :09:52.
in 2013 when helicopters rather than golf balls flew over the fairways. | :09:53. | :09:57.
It was named as the venue of the 2017 Irish Open two years ago and | :09:58. | :10:01.
the new owners of the resort have been investing in the hotel and golf | :10:02. | :10:05.
course in anticipation of hosting the tournament. But the organisers, | :10:06. | :10:10.
the European Tour, want to move the Irish Open to a traditional links | :10:11. | :10:14.
course. A statement from the Lough Erne Resort said they are extremely | :10:15. | :10:19.
dis-I pointed that the European Tour announced a change in its decision. | :10:20. | :10:23.
Since acquiring the resort they have been excited and committed to | :10:24. | :10:27.
hosting the events and have never waivered from that commitment. It | :10:28. | :10:32.
said they tried to persuade senior tour officials to keep their | :10:33. | :10:36.
commitment to Lough Erne Resort and the region, adding they are | :10:37. | :10:39.
disappointed, not only for the staff and the people of County Fermanagh. | :10:40. | :10:45.
The news as come as a blow to the local tourism industry. We have a | :10:46. | :10:50.
strong strategy for events and if Fermanagh is going to thrive and | :10:51. | :10:53.
prosper in the future, these events are very important for the local | :10:54. | :10:57.
tourism industry and local economy. The European Tour Chief Executive | :10:58. | :11:01.
came here last week, describing it as a beautiful facility and an | :11:02. | :11:06.
outstanding golf course. He said while next year's Irish Open will | :11:07. | :11:10.
not be held here, he is confident the Lough Erne Resort will host an | :11:11. | :11:13.
event with the European Tour in the future. | :11:14. | :11:18.
The police are trying to track down some world war one medals | :11:19. | :11:21.
which were stolen during a burglary in north Belfast at the weekend. | :11:22. | :11:24.
They had been awarded to sapper McIntyre Shield Pelan and included | :11:25. | :11:26.
a victory medal and a Military Medal which is inscribed to recognise | :11:27. | :11:29.
It's believed they were stolen from a house on Parkmount Road | :11:30. | :11:33.
sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. | :11:34. | :11:41.
Here's the weather forecast with Geoff Maskell. | :11:42. | :11:46.
Hello. Good evening if you want one word to sum-up our weather at the | :11:47. | :11:52.
moment, it is messy and the cause of that mess is right here. This area | :11:53. | :11:57.
of low pressure swirling around in the Atlantic, drawing this weather | :11:58. | :12:00.
front towards it and dragging the rain across Ireland through the next | :12:01. | :12:04.
few days. It will waiver north. It will waiver south. Tonight, the rain | :12:05. | :12:09.
is sitting to the south of us, but after midnight it will push north | :12:10. | :12:15.
spreading in all parts. Tomorrow, is going to start rather as today did, | :12:16. | :12:20.
a bit of a soggy note. It will improve, but this time the front is | :12:21. | :12:24.
leaving us to the north, it is pulling away into the North Sea. So | :12:25. | :12:28.
we will get some clearing skies, but they'll clear first across County | :12:29. | :12:32.
Down and push further north. If we take the wider view, you can see | :12:33. | :12:35.
what's going on, we have cooler air to the north of the front and warmer | :12:36. | :12:39.
air to the south of it. 17 Celsius in London tomorrow which is in | :12:40. | :12:43.
marked contrast to what we will be seeing. On a dry afternoon with the | :12:44. | :12:48.
temperatures up to ten or 11 Celsius. But still feeling pretty | :12:49. | :12:53.
grey and overcast. Now we have said farewell to the weather front, but | :12:54. | :12:57.
it is coming back. It returns on Wednesday. This time, it is heading | :12:58. | :13:01.
south and the front is fragmenting so it will be more showery in nature | :13:02. | :13:06.
as that rain makes its way across Northern Ireland, staying grey and | :13:07. | :13:10.
cloudy know with top temperatures of nine or ten Celsius. The | :13:11. | :13:14.
temperatures remain pretty constant, but it is still not the nicest week. | :13:15. | :13:18.
