In an unexpected development, the police are to re-open | :01:02. | :01:17.
the criminal investigation into the Kingsmills massacre | :01:18. | :01:18.
Ten Protestant men were shot dead by the IRA as they were returning | :01:19. | :01:24.
home in their work van to Bessbrook in County Armagh. | :01:25. | :01:27.
The inquest is only a week old, but now it has been told that | :01:28. | :01:31.
a palm print on a getaway vehicle has been identified. | :01:32. | :01:34.
The families have reacted with a mixture of | :01:35. | :01:36.
It was a truly dramatic development which took the families by surprise | :01:37. | :01:43.
after 40 years of anger and heartbreak. | :01:44. | :01:52.
A group of family members arrived here at the inquest this morning | :01:53. | :01:56.
expecting to hear more witness statements about the day their loved | :01:57. | :01:59.
ones were murdered. Instead they were taken to a private room and | :02:00. | :02:03.
told the shock news that the palm print they had known about for 40 | :02:04. | :02:07.
years had been matched and identified. | :02:08. | :02:07.
Now the criminal investigation has been reopened and a senior | :02:08. | :02:10.
investigating officer has been appointed to restart | :02:11. | :02:11.
The reaction of the families was described in court as emotional, | :02:12. | :02:15.
stunned silence, but delight at the development. | :02:16. | :02:17.
There was no explanation about why it had taken so long to find | :02:18. | :02:20.
First of all, it would have to be welcomed, but it is never too late. | :02:21. | :02:35.
We are going through a mixture of emotions, and I have to be honest, | :02:36. | :02:38.
the first one is anger. After 40 years we are now told there has been | :02:39. | :02:42.
in development. It is hard to take in. | :02:43. | :02:43.
It heard that the print had been identified last Tuesday. | :02:44. | :02:48.
Lawyers were informed on Friday and the news was broken | :02:49. | :02:51.
A barrister said they had come to the inquest was normal but justice | :02:52. | :02:58.
but with hope that the truth might come out. The know say they are | :02:59. | :03:01.
delighted at the news the enquiry is to be reopened. The Brent had been | :03:02. | :03:07.
taken from the suspected getaway vehicle 40 years ago, so the sudden | :03:08. | :03:13.
confirmation of who it belongs to has cost some suspicion among the | :03:14. | :03:16.
families. Alan Black is the only survivor of the attack. It went | :03:17. | :03:22.
through a review in the 1980s, and another one in the 1990s. It is the | :03:23. | :03:31.
timing of it. Why now? When they have had it all this time, we are | :03:32. | :03:36.
just into the inquest, starting to get going, they throw this into the | :03:37. | :03:42.
mix. The truth may come, and I think what is wrong now, there are shades | :03:43. | :03:45.
of the truth coming out and everybody is beginning to tell the | :03:46. | :03:51.
truth and go into think, whereas before they just brushed it under | :03:52. | :03:53.
the carpet. -- what is going on now. The inquest continued | :03:54. | :03:57.
in the afternoon with witness statements, and will | :03:58. | :03:59.
resume on Thursday. A coroner has found | :04:00. | :04:02.
that the shooting dead of Harry Thornton in 1971 | :04:03. | :04:04.
when his van backfired outside a police station in West Belfast | :04:05. | :04:06.
was neither necessary The father of six was | :04:07. | :04:09.
shot twice by a member of the Parachute Regiment | :04:10. | :04:14.
near to the Springfield The coroner, Brian Sherrard, | :04:15. | :04:16.
also found that evidence He said there was no weapon | :04:17. | :04:21.
in the van and no forensic evidence on the victim to show | :04:22. | :04:26.
a gun had been fired. An inquiry has begun into claims | :04:27. | :04:31.
of state-sponsored child prostitution at a former | :04:32. | :04:33.
boys' home in Belfast. Public hearings opened this | :04:34. | :04:37.
morning into the abuse of boys at Kincora, | :04:38. | :04:41.
and allegations that it was covered up by | :04:42. | :04:43.
the intelligence services. Abused as a young boy at Kincora, | :04:44. | :04:55.
this man came to the enquiry today looking for answers. Kincora was a | :04:56. | :05:00.
home for older teenage boys, and operated in east Belfast from 1958 | :05:01. | :05:05.
until it closed amid scandal in 1980. Three men were jailed in 1981 | :05:06. | :05:10.
for abusing boys there. At least 29 boys were known to be abused at the | :05:11. | :05:13.
home. Over the years there have been persistent allegations of a cover-up | :05:14. | :05:18.
by intelligence services will stop at the enquiry today, MI5 and MI6 | :05:19. | :05:22.
were legally represented, and cooperated with the enquiry. The | :05:23. | :05:27.
enquiry has been provided with Phil and voluntary cooperation by all Her | :05:28. | :05:32.
Majesty 's Government department and agencies. The scale of the | :05:33. | :05:37.
allegations due to be heard at the enquiry over the next week was | :05:38. | :05:38.
outlined in stark terms. You will also hear me refer | :05:39. | :05:40.
to and you will read claims of state-sponsored child prostitution, | :05:41. | :05:44.
paedophile rings, blackmail and cover-ups, which you | :05:45. | :05:50.
will have to examine. The allegations against the | :05:51. | :06:00.
intelligence services have been circulating for four decades. It was | :06:01. | :06:05.
said today that if they are true, they must be laid bare. But if they | :06:06. | :06:09.
are false, they must be dispelled and laid to rest. Details from some | :06:10. | :06:14.
of the intelligence files which have been handed over to the enquiry will | :06:15. | :06:18.
be made public. However, some other files will only be seen by the | :06:19. | :06:21.
enquiry team. They will then be preserved in secret. | :06:22. | :06:26.
Two men have been arrested by the National Crime Agency | :06:27. | :06:29.
in connection with the controversial Nama property deal. | :06:30. | :06:32.
The agency said it had also carried out searches at addresses | :06:33. | :06:35.
in County Down in connection with a fraud investigation. | :06:36. | :06:39.
Nama, the Republic's so-called bad bank, sold more than ?1 billion | :06:40. | :06:42.
The president of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce says he wants | :06:43. | :06:51.
the Stormont Government to target the north-west for job creation. | :06:52. | :06:54.
His call comes in the wake of 70 job losses at Seagate, | :06:55. | :06:58.
which is one of the largest employers in Derry. | :06:59. | :07:00.
Around 1400 people are employed by Seagate at its Springtown plant. | :07:01. | :07:10.
Many work in specialised conditions where cleanliness is crucial | :07:11. | :07:12.
Seagate makes a tiny part for a hard drive. | :07:13. | :07:17.
It allows consumers to store a vast amount of information - | :07:18. | :07:20.
Due to the changing nature of the marketplace and consumer | :07:21. | :07:27.
demand, Seagate's now undergoing a global restructuring. | :07:28. | :07:31.
70 jobs are to go at Springtown - 5% of its workforce. | :07:32. | :07:39.
how we record our photographs, images, on mobile phones and PCs, it | :07:40. | :07:47.
is considered changing and evolving. I think the security that we do have | :07:48. | :07:50.
with Seagate in Springtown is that there are a novel lot of RND jobs, | :07:51. | :07:56.
working at the next generation of storage device and systems. | :07:57. | :07:58.
In a statement, Seagate said it was positioning the company | :07:59. | :08:00.
for growth whilst responding to new industry demands. | :08:01. | :08:02.
It said unfortunately this required some workforce reduction. | :08:03. | :08:04.
Seagate said it's not easy to make decisions that affect people's lives | :08:05. | :08:08.
but it believes this is the best way forward for the company. | :08:09. | :08:12.
The redundancies will be both voluntary and compulsory. | :08:13. | :08:21.
A special commemoration was held today in Belfast | :08:22. | :08:23.
for all of the Irish sailors who died in World War I. | :08:24. | :08:26.
The ceremony was on HMS Caroline, the only surviving ship | :08:27. | :08:29.
from the Battle of Jutland, and this marks the centenary | :08:30. | :08:33.
Donna Traynor was there for BBC Newsline. | :08:34. | :08:40.
An all 1500 Irish sailors died in the First World War. They were | :08:41. | :08:50.
Catholics and Protestants, unionists and nationalists from all parts of | :08:51. | :08:53.
Ireland, and some were as young as 14 years old. This was an | :08:54. | :08:59.
unprecedented all Ireland commemoration today, as Prince | :09:00. | :09:02.
Michael of Kent represented us in the royal navy, Irish Naval service, | :09:03. | :09:08.
and the German Admiral joined more than 200 descendants to remember the | :09:09. | :09:12.
sacrifice of Irish sailors. They also remember the 1000 men in the | :09:13. | :09:15.
Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who were killed. | :09:16. | :09:35.
He left young twins and a pregnant wife in balance in. His daughter, | :09:36. | :09:42.
named after the ship he was killed on. For a Victoria crosses were | :09:43. | :09:51.
awarded, including the commander. There was an attack against the | :09:52. | :09:58.
German cruiser. For those who lived with horror and mental anguish, we | :09:59. | :10:03.
remember you. For those with no family to remember them, we remember | :10:04. | :10:07.
you. And for those who were forgotten, we remember you. The | :10:08. | :10:14.
ceremony here earlier was particularly poignant for | :10:15. | :10:16.
descendants of those who were killed. Earlier I spoke to two women | :10:17. | :10:21.
whose relatives saw the horrors of the Battle of Jutland and survived. | :10:22. | :10:29.
Very emotional. Very proud of my grandfather, and the fact also that | :10:30. | :10:33.
HMS Caroline is now a national treasure. And has been restored to | :10:34. | :10:39.
former glory. Its So for generations and generations are going to see and | :10:40. | :10:45.
hopefully get some insight into what it was like to be involved, live on | :10:46. | :10:49.
the ship, be involved in the war, and the horrors that were part of | :10:50. | :10:56.
it. Memories I have got from older people aware that he would stand in | :10:57. | :11:00.
his doorway, post-war, and he would look into the distance almost | :11:01. | :11:05.
vacantly. I'm sure he was recalling absolute atrocities. He would have | :11:06. | :11:12.
seen the Queen Mary going down, over 1200 on board, not to mention the | :11:13. | :11:17.
noise and how appalling that was. He would have also witnessed the | :11:18. | :11:22.
burials at sea of HMS Tiger. There were 28 buried, and I'm sure he must | :11:23. | :11:27.
have known them. So I'm sure all those memories must have been | :11:28. | :11:33.
recurring. Today is the centenary of the Battle of Jutland. Mervyn Jess | :11:34. | :11:37.
takes a look at the role of Ireland during that battle, from those who | :11:38. | :11:43.
served in the Royal navy and also those who gave safe haven to the | :11:44. | :11:49.
fleet at the outbreak of war. Mark Doherty on board the newly | :11:50. | :11:53.
refurbished HMS Caroline. The last surviving ship from the Battle of | :11:54. | :11:58.
Jutland century ago. But this is not just some passing interest in | :11:59. | :12:06.
100-year-old naval conflict. Great uncle, was a 22 old engine room | :12:07. | :12:09.
stalker. He was killed when his ship was hit by German fire during the | :12:10. | :12:16.
battle. It was a particularly significant ship, one of the first | :12:17. | :12:22.
to encounter the Germans. There were 99 men killed, 51 injured. The ship | :12:23. | :12:30.
itself was hit 14 times. This time that it was head was particularly | :12:31. | :12:33.
significant, so it was quite possible he was killed that time. It | :12:34. | :12:39.
was the only major naval engagement of the First World War. Jordan 50 | :12:40. | :12:51.
ships crews by 100 -- many sailors... Among the Royal Navy dead | :12:52. | :12:56.
were around 350 Irish men, many of them teenagers. Some of whom had | :12:57. | :13:03.
signed up by just 15 years of age. On a day like today it is just as | :13:04. | :13:07.
calm and picturesque as sport as you're likely to find, but at 94 | :13:08. | :13:11.
gene this was a very different scene as this became the home base of the | :13:12. | :13:17.
British fleet at the outbreak of the First World War. -- in 1914. It is | :13:18. | :13:21.
estimated as many as 10,000 sailors from Ireland served in the Navy | :13:22. | :13:25.
during the First World War. The arrival of the fleet at Lough Swilly | :13:26. | :13:30.
in Donegal was a big boost at that time. Both would have done very well | :13:31. | :13:36.
from selling fresh vegetables and brothers at the time, so I think | :13:37. | :13:40.
anyway to make a few pounds would have been very helpful. It must have | :13:41. | :13:46.
been some site. 40 vessels along this, as you can see today, very | :13:47. | :13:55.
tranquil and beautiful. People here eventually wed and serve at the | :13:56. | :14:00.
Battle of Jutland. Five years ago a permanent memorial was erected here. | :14:01. | :14:07.
They are proud of their history now. It may have been less talked about | :14:08. | :14:14.
in previous times, but we have about 500 people coming every year to | :14:15. | :14:18.
commemorate this event. I know package also from a surviving | :14:19. | :14:23.
letter. He was having a difficult time at sea away from his family, | :14:24. | :14:30.
very alien environment for a modest country boy, as he was, coming from | :14:31. | :14:35.
a little cottage. It is quite moving when you begin to get involved in | :14:36. | :14:44.
trying to get into Patrick Joseph's shoes, or anyone else who was | :14:45. | :14:48.
involved. It's good to see that such an effort has been made to | :14:49. | :14:51.
acknowledge his sacrifice and the sacrifice of many thousands of | :14:52. | :14:56.
others who died on Monday. -- on that day. Mark Doherty remembering | :14:57. | :15:04.
his relative, Patrick Doherty. There is a special commemoration programme | :15:05. | :15:07.
on the Battle of Jutland this evening, on BBC Two at seven | :15:08. | :15:08.
o'clock. Reflections across the UK and | :15:09. | :15:14.
Ireland today. A BBC Spotlight programme to be | :15:15. | :15:19.
broadcast tonight will reveal that eight children who came | :15:20. | :15:21.
to Northern Ireland without their parents | :15:22. | :15:23.
after fleeing their home countries have gone missing after being taken | :15:24. | :15:25.
into the care system. In 2011, this 16-year-old Somali | :15:26. | :15:38.
girl arrived in Northern Ireland, alone. She was placed in caring east | :15:39. | :15:42.
Belfast. Just 18 days later, she vanished. This girl went missing | :15:43. | :15:50.
back in 2005, when she was just 14. No BBC Spotlight has uncovered that | :15:51. | :15:54.
the children who should have been cared for by the authorities have | :15:55. | :16:00.
gone missing. If it was local kids, this would be a national scandal. It | :16:01. | :16:05.
would be a scandal across these islands. The UK Government has | :16:06. | :16:11.
recently agreed to bring more children into the country who have | :16:12. | :16:13.
left the country without their parents. Yvette Cooper thinks more | :16:14. | :16:18.
needs to be done to find the missing children. I think we need local | :16:19. | :16:22.
authorities to take responsibility, but also the police. We cannot see | :16:23. | :16:27.
these as immigration cases, it is a serious child protection issue. The | :16:28. | :16:30.
PSNI said all these were followed at the time, and the health and social | :16:31. | :16:34.
care boards the new procedures are in place and no children have gone | :16:35. | :16:38.
missing since 2014. Stormont has to bring in new provisions to appoint | :16:39. | :16:44.
guardians to the Qatar separated children. It is hoped this will | :16:45. | :16:48.
prevent children like these going missing again. -- to look after | :16:49. | :16:51.
separated children. And you can see Spotlight tonight | :16:52. | :16:53.
at a quarter to eleven Local motorcyclist Ryan Farquhar has | :16:54. | :16:55.
given his first television interview since the crash at the North West | :16:56. | :17:00.
200 which left him Mark Sidebottom has | :17:01. | :17:03.
this evening's sport. Almost three weeks after the high | :17:04. | :17:09.
speed accident, the Dungannon man remains in the Royal | :17:10. | :17:13.
Victoria hospital. Another rider lost his life at the | :17:14. | :17:21.
same spot in another race later that week. | :17:22. | :17:22.
Speaking to Stephen Watson from his bedside | :17:23. | :17:24.
this afternoon, the 40-year-old wouldn't be drawn | :17:25. | :17:25.
but did acknowledge he was lucky to be alive. | :17:26. | :17:30.
Very lucky, especially after all that happened to Malik A. Every race | :17:31. | :17:40.
I have done this year, it has stuck with me. And on the Thursday night, | :17:41. | :17:50.
I do pretty much remember everything that happened. I remember when I | :17:51. | :17:55.
came off, I just wanted to get my helmet off. The medical team stopped | :17:56. | :18:03.
with me, and knowing how close they came to not being here, it puts | :18:04. | :18:08.
things into perspective. There are a lot of people who have to be -- that | :18:09. | :18:14.
I have to be very thankful to. I just cannot thank them enough. After | :18:15. | :18:19.
what happened to you, has a change your outlook about the sport at all? | :18:20. | :18:28.
-- has it changed your Outlook? I've always loved road racing and always | :18:29. | :18:31.
will. At this minute in time, the last thing on my mind is... I am not | :18:32. | :18:38.
sitting here at the minute thinking, I wonder can I get myself fit for | :18:39. | :18:46.
the gold cup in September, or whatever. The first priority I want | :18:47. | :18:52.
to do is just get myself and my health sorted out. Your sport has | :18:53. | :18:56.
obviously received quite a lot of negative the weather did. What would | :18:57. | :18:59.
you say to those people who have been criticising road racing over | :19:00. | :19:05.
the past few weeks? Whenever there has been a vitality or serious | :19:06. | :19:10.
incident, that is when people point the finger and say, this shouldn't | :19:11. | :19:15.
be allowed to happen. -- a fatality. We all know what we are doing and | :19:16. | :19:20.
know the dangers, and this is the downside of it. I will love road | :19:21. | :19:28.
racing till the day I die, but at this minute in time, the last thing | :19:29. | :19:32.
I am thinking about at the minute is getting my leg bag over a bike. | :19:33. | :19:38.
Good to see him on the road to recovery. You can see an extended | :19:39. | :19:39.
interview with him on our website. Ryan proudly wearing his | :19:40. | :19:43.
Northern Ireland jersey, and will be rooting for Chris Baird | :19:44. | :19:46.
and his teamates in France. Now 34, with 77 caps under his belt, | :19:47. | :19:48.
Baird endured many lean years Then along came Michael O'Neill, | :19:49. | :19:51.
and the rest is history. Always had the support. You can | :19:52. | :20:06.
never fault that. They have always behind us, no matter what. Just know | :20:07. | :20:12.
it qualifying, it is fantastic for everybody in the whole country. We | :20:13. | :20:17.
went to so many bad times, and I thought, can I keep going? I have | :20:18. | :20:20.
enjoyed every minute of it, regardless of the past. Putting on | :20:21. | :20:26.
Northern Ireland jerseys is fantastic. But no to look forward to | :20:27. | :20:30.
this and finally say we have qualified for this European | :20:31. | :20:34.
Championships, I will always look back on it, when I do eventually | :20:35. | :20:37.
finished with the national team. Belarus, beaten 3-0 | :20:38. | :20:44.
by Northern Ireland on Friday past, also provide the opposition | :20:45. | :20:46.
for the Republic this evening. Martin O'Neill will announce his | :20:47. | :20:48.
final squad for France They are starting this final fixture | :20:49. | :21:08.
as Martin O'Neill feels the need the. But he will also way up the | :21:09. | :21:16.
risk. Robbie Keane suffered a calf problem in training and needed an | :21:17. | :21:24.
injection. The other big calls are likely to be in midfield, with 45 | :21:25. | :21:29.
players in contention for just two spots. This is unlike club level, | :21:30. | :21:36.
when you make a decision on Friday about certain players on Saturday, | :21:37. | :21:40.
but you will see them on a or Monday evening before the game and then | :21:41. | :21:43.
during the course of the week. Some of these buyers will be told here, | :21:44. | :21:48.
and it will be difficult. Having been released by Everton as a | :21:49. | :21:53.
teenager, is the number of midfielders battling it out for a | :21:54. | :21:57.
place in the final squad. It was not so long ago you were | :21:58. | :22:01.
playing in the Irish league. Are you prepared for the cusp of a major | :22:02. | :22:05.
trigger mental note? It was only five or six years ago that I was | :22:06. | :22:11.
buying for Coleraine, so going to major tournament is phenomenal. It | :22:12. | :22:17.
is something I will look back over my career when I retire. It has been | :22:18. | :22:22.
a long journey to get here, and hopefully successful at this point. | :22:23. | :22:25.
Is there a nervousness amongst the squad? I don't think so. I think | :22:26. | :22:30.
everyone trusts and the manager to make the best of visions for the | :22:31. | :22:33.
team, and I do not think anyone will be better if they don't get a seat. | :22:34. | :22:37.
Everyone has worked hard, but I think you have to go on what the | :22:38. | :22:41.
manager thinks is the best team and the best squad at this point in | :22:42. | :22:46.
time. This is effectively a final audition for a number of members of | :22:47. | :22:52.
the squad. Martin O'Neill wants to summit his panel just after 11 | :22:53. | :22:56.
o'clock tonight. Before that you can watch the best of the action here in | :22:57. | :22:59.
court. Nice to see some sunshine in court. | :23:00. | :23:11.
The sun certainly shining here as well. Will it last? | :23:12. | :23:21.
At least a few more visible, and tomorrow is the start of the summer | :23:22. | :23:29.
season. Up north we had temperatures of 21.5, and County Down was | :23:30. | :23:33.
generally wireless. A bit of low cloud and Miss play parts of the | :23:34. | :23:37.
north coast, especially and the breeze coming from the sea meant | :23:38. | :23:41.
there is a contrast in temperature depending on where you are. In many | :23:42. | :23:48.
places in County Down enjoy 21 degrees. The ones continues in many | :23:49. | :23:53.
bases this evening. I'm sure the barbecue smell will be in the air. | :23:54. | :23:59.
It stays dry tonight, but missed and cloud developing widely in the north | :24:00. | :24:01.
and will sink feathers. Temperatures in part of the countryside could get | :24:02. | :24:08.
as low as for or 5 degrees. Despite that it will warm up quickly | :24:09. | :24:12.
tomorrow. If there is missed or a cloud around first thing, it will | :24:13. | :24:18.
burn off for most places. Don't panic too quickly. The sun will | :24:19. | :24:21.
break through. Increasing amounts of sunshine during the early morning. | :24:22. | :24:24.
Temperatures recovering into double figures in many places quite | :24:25. | :24:29.
quickly. It may be quite great as you head off to work or school first | :24:30. | :24:33.
thing, particularly in the north and west. You can see the sunnier skies | :24:34. | :24:37.
developing as the morning goes on, and another lovely afternoon. Not | :24:38. | :24:41.
particularly breezy, although the cool breeze towards the north course | :24:42. | :24:44.
will mean temperatures are lower here. In general many places will | :24:45. | :24:49.
have similar temperatures to today. Another lovely evening tomorrow, and | :24:50. | :24:52.
the summery weather continues into Thursday. Well we have this lovely | :24:53. | :24:58.
weather, our Weather Watchers have been out in force. If you will be in | :24:59. | :25:02.
the sun over the next few days, don't forget that UV levels are | :25:03. | :25:05.
strong, and even if the temperature is a little bit lower up towards the | :25:06. | :25:09.
course, the sun is just as strong, so keep that suncream reapplied. | :25:10. | :25:18.
Good advice, thank you. That is all for now. | :25:19. | :25:19.
