This is BBC Newsline and these are the headlines

:00:00.:00:17.

A lap of legends at Windsor Park - two Paralympic champions ask why

:00:18.:00:24.

I was wanting to know, or was it about who we represent? The two that

:00:25.:00:39.

are either compete for Great Britain and those who are compete for the

:00:40.:00:43.

Irish. Was it about achievement or not?

:00:44.:00:45.

Described as the Orange Order's greatest advocate -

:00:46.:00:47.

tributes are paid to Drew Nelson who has died.

:00:48.:00:50.

The gift of free parking for christmas shoppers -

:00:51.:00:52.

will Belfast council be convinced to take it back?

:00:53.:00:54.

A digital detox - would losing their smartphones send

:00:55.:00:56.

We'll have the latest from Hanover where Northern Ireland's footballers

:00:57.:01:00.

are preparing to take on Germany in a World Cup qualifier.

:01:01.:01:04.

And after another lovely day for most today -

:01:05.:01:06.

find out how the rest of the week is shaping up

:01:07.:01:09.

Saturday was supposed to be a night of celebration

:01:10.:01:50.

at the new National football stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast.

:01:51.:01:52.

But the official opening has now been overshadowed by who was not

:01:53.:01:55.

invited to take part in a parade of local sporting greats -

:01:56.:01:58.

what was called a "Lap of Legends" on the pitch.

:01:59.:02:00.

Two of our Paralympic gold medallists - Jason Smyth

:02:01.:02:03.

and Michael McKillop - were not originally

:02:04.:02:04.

BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson is at Windsor Park.

:02:05.:02:08.

It was quite a night on Saturday, the opening of the new

:02:09.:02:11.

multi-million-pound stadium, the biggest crowd here for decades and

:02:12.:02:13.

Northern Ireland work areas. There was a party atmosphere but some

:02:14.:02:16.

believe the IFA spoiled the party by not inviting all the right people.

:02:17.:02:18.

It wasn't just footballers who were invited to a lap of honour

:02:19.:02:21.

around the new Windsor Park on Saturday night.

:02:22.:02:23.

Soap star Charlie Lawson, once of Coronation Street, was there.

:02:24.:02:25.

As did singer Gary Lightbody and goalkeeping great Pat Jennings.

:02:26.:02:32.

Two Paralympic stars who recently represented Team GB were there -

:02:33.:02:36.

But two runners who recently represented Team Ireland,

:02:37.:02:42.

Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop, were not on

:02:43.:02:45.

The standout thing was, who we represent?

:02:46.:02:56.

The two that are there compete for Great Britain and the

:02:57.:03:02.

Maybe that was me making an assumption but

:03:03.:03:05.

that was the question that I was asking.

:03:06.:03:07.

Michael McKillop also wasn't on the original invitation list. He was

:03:08.:03:19.

invited at the last minute but he said that was too late. I would love

:03:20.:03:24.

to have attended, I'm a massive sports fan and I've been to many

:03:25.:03:30.

Northern Ireland matches in the past and it's coming down to politics and

:03:31.:03:34.

who you compete for, and that's unfortunate because I have always

:03:35.:03:37.

talked about representing the island. But the IFA say it was not

:03:38.:03:41.

about politics but logistics. And the Sports Minister says that

:03:42.:04:00.

should be the end of the matter. I have no doubt that the IFA had no

:04:01.:04:05.

intention of causing offence to anybody, and we shouldn't allow this

:04:06.:04:11.

to overshadow a successful occasion. It was certainly a night like no

:04:12.:04:12.

other at Windsor Park. The IFA haven't just build a new

:04:13.:04:24.

stadium here, they are trying to build a completely new era, a

:04:25.:04:29.

cross-community era, and they have made enormous strides in recent

:04:30.:04:34.

years, I saw it myself when I was in France for the Euros and we saw it

:04:35.:04:39.

on Saturday when one of the VIPs invited was Martin McGuinness, but

:04:40.:04:44.

this controversy over the invitation that, accidental or not, will lead

:04:45.:04:49.

some to believe that the IFA still have some distance to go to create

:04:50.:04:58.

new completely cross there. -- that new completely cross-community here.

:04:59.:05:00.

Two men have been remanded in custody following a stabbing

:05:01.:05:02.

in Lisnaskea when three men were wounded.

:05:03.:05:04.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

:05:05.:05:07.

Our south-west reporter, Julian Fowler, was at

:05:08.:05:08.

The stabbings happened at Trasna Way in Lisnaksea.

:05:09.:05:11.

Three men aged in their 20s were attacked in the early hours

:05:12.:05:14.

They were taken to hospital for treatment.

:05:15.:05:18.

None are thought to have life-threatening injuries.

:05:19.:05:24.

Appearing at Enniskillen Magistrates' Court today were

:05:25.:05:30.

26-year-old Brendan McLaughlin of Tempo Road in Tempo.

:05:31.:05:31.

He faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of causing

:05:32.:05:34.

Another 26-year-old, Peter Smith of Sycamore Drive in Enniskillen,

:05:35.:05:38.

is accused of causing grievous bodily harm.

:05:39.:05:41.

Both men also face a charge of entering a house

:05:42.:05:44.

Brendan McLaughlin stood in the dock with his hand in a cast.

:05:45.:05:50.

His solicitor said his client had spent some time in hospital

:05:51.:05:54.

and a detective constable confirmed that he had obvious injuries

:05:55.:05:58.

The officer, who said she could connect both men

:05:59.:06:03.

to the charges, added that Mr McLaughlin had given two "no

:06:04.:06:07.

Neither defendant applied for bail and they were both

:06:08.:06:12.

A man in his 40s was stabbed in the head in Lurgan last night.

:06:13.:06:22.

He was attacked by two men on a pathway in the Old Portadown

:06:23.:06:26.

His injuries are described as non life-threatening.

:06:27.:06:33.

call for a fresh investigation into his killing.

:06:34.:06:46.

If you plan to head to Belfast for your Christmas shopping this

:06:47.:06:50.

year, you may not be able to get free city centre parking.

:06:51.:06:55.

Festive shoppers enjoyed the benefit last December.

:06:56.:06:58.

Our business correspondent, Julian O'Neill, has the details.

:06:59.:07:06.

Last year for the first time in four years Belfast City Council made 1500

:07:07.:07:15.

car parking spaces available for free on week nights and at weekends.

:07:16.:07:19.

The idea was to entice Christmas shoppers and help the cities

:07:20.:07:25.

retailers, but Translink says it clogged up the city, making it too

:07:26.:07:29.

congested and was counter-productive. It wants the

:07:30.:07:34.

council to shell proposals for free parking this year and along with the

:07:35.:07:38.

Department for Infrastructure has come up with some alternatives. In

:07:39.:07:43.

December Translink says it would reduce the cost of bus and train

:07:44.:07:47.

fares after the morning commute and extend the opening hours of its park

:07:48.:07:52.

and ride facilities. But this proposal has to clear to hurdles,

:07:53.:07:57.

first it needs the backing of a council committing on Wednesday and

:07:58.:08:01.

then if successful would go forward for full adoption by the Council at

:08:02.:08:05.

a monthly meeting in November. The First Minister Arlene Foster has

:08:06.:08:07.

paid tribute to the senior Orangeman Drew Nelson who has died

:08:08.:08:10.

after a short illness. Condolences have also been expressed

:08:11.:08:13.

by the Ulster Unionist Party, The current Grand Master has

:08:14.:08:17.

described Mr Nelson as perhaps Drew Nelson was regarded as one

:08:18.:08:24.

of the most articulate voices He was seen as a moderniser

:08:25.:08:32.

and a visionary within Orangeism. Before taking on a leading

:08:33.:08:38.

role within the Order, he'd been an Ulster Unionist

breaking new ground when he addressed the Irish

:09:04.:09:06.

Senate four years ago. Thank you very much for

:09:07.:09:11.

the invitation to come here today. He was also among Orange

:09:12.:09:15.

delegations that met SDLP politicians, the former

:09:16.:09:17.

Irish President Mary McAleese and the leader of the Catholic Church

:09:18.:09:20.

the institution's grassroots and was central to the parades

:09:24.:09:28.

issue, showing his support for the protest at Twaddell Avenue

:09:29.:09:31.

when it was still ongoing. I think he made a huge contribution

:09:32.:09:35.

in terms of its cultural direction and I think in restoring the

:09:36.:09:40.

reputation of the Order and looking The Order's Grand Secretary has been

:09:41.:09:48.

described by fellow Orangemen as its greatest ever advocate,

:09:49.:09:51.

with his greatest legacy Drew was a colossus within the

:09:52.:10:03.

institution. A lifelong Orangemen, dedicated to the Orange cause.

:10:04.:10:14.

His greatest legacy being the visit of Prince Charles

:10:15.:10:16.

at Sloan's House in County Armagh earlier this year, and the level

:10:17.:10:20.

of recognition that symbolised for the Institution.

:10:21.:10:22.

The Union flag is flying at half-mast in memory Drew Nelson.

:10:23.:10:30.

Those within the Orange Order and outside that are well aware that he

:10:31.:10:32.

will be hard to replace. The family of a former UDR solider

:10:33.:10:34.

who was murdered by the Real IRA in Londonderry 14 years ago

:10:35.:10:37.

are calling for a fresh David Caldwell's partner

:10:38.:10:39.

and daughter met the First Minister Arlene Foster

:10:40.:10:44.

and the Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt at Stormont today

:10:45.:10:47.

to seek their support Our political correspondent

:10:48.:10:51.

Enda McClafferty is at Stormont. Remind us of the circumstances

:10:52.:10:59.

of Mr Caldwell's murder. David Caldwell had retired from the

:11:00.:11:10.

UDR and was carrying out construction work on the Territorial

:11:11.:11:15.

Army base in the Waterside area in 2002 when he picked up a bomb hidden

:11:16.:11:21.

in a lunchbox. He suffered multiple injuries and died two was later in

:11:22.:11:25.

Altnagelvin the hospital. Police said he was a soft target working on

:11:26.:11:30.

an unmanned station with no security. There was widespread

:11:31.:11:34.

condemnation at the time about his murder, the real IRA admitted the

:11:35.:11:41.

attack and despite the fact a number of people were arrested in question,

:11:42.:11:45.

no one has been held accountable for his killing.

:11:46.:11:45.

Why do the family want a fresh investigation now?

:11:46.:11:50.

This stems from allegations which appeared in a book by a man who

:11:51.:11:57.

claims he was a soldier working on covert operations in Derry around

:11:58.:12:06.

the time of the murder. He details a surveillance operation during which

:12:07.:12:08.

they were a link they suspect they believe to be transporting a bomb.

:12:09.:12:11.

He said the car they were following. Alongside another vehicle and the

:12:12.:12:17.

bomb was moved from one card to another and they tailed the wrong

:12:18.:12:20.

car. They were not able to thought the attack and Mr Caldwell lost his

:12:21.:12:25.

life. That raises serious questions for the family in terms of what was

:12:26.:12:29.

known at the time. The author of the book refuses to divulge his real

:12:30.:12:35.

liberty, so this account cannot be tested, but the Caldwell family say

:12:36.:12:40.

there are many questions which need answered and they came to Stormont

:12:41.:12:44.

to lobby support from Arlene Foster and Mike Nesbitt. This is what Mr

:12:45.:12:53.

Caldwell's partner had to say. It is hurtful, some man knows details

:12:54.:12:58.

about VB's death and could not come forward before this. Will weep

:12:59.:13:02.

another 14 years to see who else will knock on the door? No, it has

:13:03.:13:09.

to come to a stop. Mr Nesbitt says there are questions that need

:13:10.:13:13.

answers around this and he has been in touch with the Chief Constable's

:13:14.:13:17.

office and has quoted paragraphs from this book and urged the Chief

:13:18.:13:23.

Constable to reopen the case. We await the response from the PSNI.

:13:24.:13:25.

This is BBC Newsline, and still ahead on the programme:

:13:26.:13:30.

We ask if history can be recreated in Hanover when Northern Ireland's

:14:11.:14:11.

of police interviews conducted with Shaunean Boyle

:14:12.:14:16.

following her arrest. During her first interview

:14:17.:14:20.

she refused to answer most of the questions but a pre-prepared

:14:21.:14:22.

statement was given to the police. In her statement to police,

:14:23.:14:27.

Shauneen Boyle said she tried to stop Stephen Hughes from hitting

:14:28.:14:29.

Owen Creaney but he pushed her away. She said at one point Stephen Hughes

:14:30.:14:34.

had a knife which she took off him She cleaned up Owen Creaney's face

when he was lying in the hall but said this was not a case

of her trying to cover anything up. Shaunean Boyle also told police

she stopped Hughes from hitting Mr Creaney over the head

with a dumbbell as he lay on his back after being punched,

kicked, beaten and stamped on. She said both her and Stephen Hughes

the stairs, where he was placed When asked by police if she knew why

:15:01.:15:03.

Stephen Hughes had attacked Owen Creaney, Shaunean Boyle said

:15:04.:15:10.

it was because he thought that Owen Creaney knew the identity

:15:11.:15:14.

of a person who had trashed his I don't really think he went

:15:15.:15:17.

to go that hard on him." During police interviews,

:15:18.:15:26.

Shaunean Boyle also claimed that after attacking Owen Creaney,

:15:27.:15:28.

Stephen Hughes was walking up and down saying, "What have I done?"

:15:29.:15:32.

with his hands on his head. We're getting news this evening of a

:15:33.:15:36.

fish kill. More than 1600 fish

are dead after a chemical spilled into a river in Co.

our late bulletin. we're looking at mobile technology

and the impact it's having On Friday, our reporter Mark Simpson

:16:15.:16:18.

gave up his smartphone He's taking a break from being

:16:19.:16:22.

connected online all the time. He's been asking commuters

:16:23.:16:32.

on their way into Belfast I've given up my smartphone for a

:16:33.:16:55.

week. You think you could do would? I could probably do a week but after

:16:56.:17:00.

that I would get a bit tetchy, there withdrawals and cravings would kick

:17:01.:17:05.

in. Probably not. I do everything on my phone. In your head its access to

:17:06.:17:12.

communication with people and you convince yourself it's OK to be on

:17:13.:17:17.

at all the time and then realising you're not communicating with

:17:18.:17:19.

anyone, you're just looking up information. How do you think you

:17:20.:17:26.

would cope with detox? I would probably be OK but I use it quite a

:17:27.:17:30.

lot. Have you ever had a detox? I have. I'm going through one. How's

:17:31.:17:40.

it going? Not good! You do still sees some people reading books or

:17:41.:17:46.

newspapers, and although most people seem to be on their smartphones,

:17:47.:17:51.

there are some exceptions like these two from Carrickfergus. People don't

:17:52.:17:58.

communicate any longer. Do you not feel you are missing out without a

:17:59.:18:03.

smartphone? No, I couldn't work it for a start. Would you not like to

:18:04.:18:09.

have some apps? I don't even know what apps is! She doesn't know what

:18:10.:18:15.

she's missing, or maybe she is one of the lucky ones.

:18:16.:18:24.

On tomorrow's programme we visit the McDonald

:18:25.:18:25.

family from Garvagh who have agreed to switch off their

:18:26.:18:28.

There are two teenage girls in that house - so it could be quite

:18:29.:18:32.

a sacrifice for them to be off-line with no internet for even a day

:18:33.:18:35.

The switch-off happens live on the programme tomorrow

:18:36.:18:38.

Now sport - and with the latest on the World Cup

:18:39.:18:52.

The Northern Ireland squad have travelled to Germany

:18:53.:18:55.

for their third World Cup qualifying tie in Group C.

:18:56.:18:58.

The two countries met in the group stage of Euro 2016

:18:59.:19:00.

of course, four months ago, when the Germans won one-nil.

:19:01.:19:03.

But after a four-nil victory at home to San Marino,

:19:04.:19:05.

which marked the opening of the new completed

:19:06.:19:07.

National Stadium, Michael O'Neill's side have travelled in good heart.

:19:08.:19:09.

Opening night at Northern Ireland football's new home. After years of

:19:10.:19:24.

planning and the odd hiccup, this stage was finally step. Steve Davis

:19:25.:19:30.

scored a first-half settler and a familiar face came off the bench to

:19:31.:19:37.

help Jamie Ward up like the gloss. Two goals for Kyle Lafferty, his

:19:38.:19:42.

second urgency provided by Davis, and the scoreline reflected the home

:19:43.:19:48.

side's dominance. You always want to entertain the fans to open a new

:19:49.:19:54.

stadium and our first time he says it has been completed, and

:19:55.:19:57.

thankfully we got the four goals and hopefully the fans will be happy. We

:19:58.:20:03.

will recover for two days and then on Monday be back at it. It will be

:20:04.:20:09.

a different, on Tuesday we may see little of the ball but we need a

:20:10.:20:15.

proper Northern Ireland performance to try to pick up a point. So after

:20:16.:20:19.

playing one of the worst teams in the world, Michael O'Neill and his

:20:20.:20:26.

players will face one of the best. Germany the world champions, have

:20:27.:20:30.

played 86 World Cup qualifiers and only two. If you take anything in

:20:31.:20:37.

this game it's a huge bonus, against the best international team in the

:20:38.:20:42.

world at this moment so it is good to come here having won the game on

:20:43.:20:47.

Saturday night. Taking anything from this game would be a major boost to

:20:48.:20:53.

hopes of finishing as runners-up behind Germany in the group.

:20:54.:21:08.

It has been a good few days for the Republic of Ireland.

:21:09.:21:11.

Martin O'Neill's side followed up the victory against Georgia

:21:12.:21:13.

with a 3-1 win away to Moldova, which leaves them well

:21:14.:21:16.

It is now seven points for a possible nine

:21:17.:21:20.

Everything looked to be going to plan when the visitors

:21:21.:21:24.

Only for a lapse in concentration to gift Moldova an equaliser.

:21:25.:21:29.

And he takes it! Could have maybe scored two or three before

:21:30.:21:40.

half-time, a bit of a head moment and suddenly it's parity at

:21:41.:21:43.

half-time, I think it should have been one.

:21:44.:21:45.

They responded to the setback, mainly thanks to James McClean.

:21:46.:21:47.

The West Brom forward finding the net twice in quick succession

:21:48.:21:50.

after the players were on the end of a stern talking-to at half time.

:21:51.:22:00.

a job here, my job is pretty important to me, players are

:22:01.:22:09.

important, players have to respond to things you say and they have

:22:10.:22:13.

responded the last couple of years. The games are tough, I think to try

:22:14.:22:19.

and read anything into it after two games is too early but we are

:22:20.:22:23.

delighted tonight, we have won away from home and were good.

:22:24.:22:25.

The Republic face Austria next month, before

David Healy's Linfield were knocked out of the Scottish Challenge

:22:28.:22:38.

But they took the game against Queen of the South to extra time.

:22:39.:22:42.

A 2-0 defeat sealed with this excellent free kick.

:22:43.:22:46.

In the Irish Premiership Dungannon Swifts scored

:22:47.:22:52.

Coleraine left it late to record a 2-1 over Ards.

:22:53.:23:03.

There was just one goal at Soltitude where home side

:23:04.:23:10.

one nil, Davy McDaid on target, and Glentoran are still looking

:23:11.:23:14.

for their first win in seven games after a one all draw

:23:15.:23:17.

of the Euro Hockey League for the first time ever

:23:18.:23:22.

after they qualified from the group phase,

:23:23.:23:24.

which the club hosted over the weekend.

:23:25.:23:25.

The tournament is hockey's equivalent of football's

:23:26.:23:27.

Champions League, with all the top sides across Europe competing.

:23:28.:23:29.

A 2-0 win for the hosts in their opening pool game against Paris St

Germain, it's meant a drop with Belgium's Royal Leopold would season

:23:44.:23:48.

in the top 16 of the Euro league. They made the best possible start as

:23:49.:23:53.

Eugene McGee scored after 90 seconds. But the Belgian giants hit

:23:54.:23:59.

back twice to a multi-corners to lead 2-1 at half-time. Back came

:24:00.:24:05.

Banbridge, schoolboy Cal Marshall deflecting home. A defensive error

:24:06.:24:11.

handed the initiative back to Leopold within 60 seconds. But

:24:12.:24:15.

Marshall then levelled matters again to make it 3-3, and Banbridge is

:24:16.:24:22.

then held out for a place in the last 16, which will also include

:24:23.:24:30.

Lisnagarvey. Banbridge have done it! And Northern Ireland get their

:24:31.:24:32.

second club representative through to the 16. We're fighters and no

:24:33.:24:37.

matter what the scoreline we will always keep fighting. We just stuck

:24:38.:24:43.

it out. Leopold are a great team and we stuck it out. The legs were

:24:44.:24:50.

tired, mentally we weren't there at the coach got us in, a few words and

:24:51.:24:56.

the crowd helped us put it through. The lads found something extra to

:24:57.:25:02.

date and we made history. Banbridge's step into the unknown,

:25:03.:25:06.

the last 16 knockout phase, is in April.

:25:24.:25:25.

Benny McCarry here with the only goal of the game.

It was a lovely day to day, plenty of sunny spells around the place.

:25:30.:25:45.

Let's get the forecast. Yesterday we had some glorious sunshine, people

:25:46.:25:49.

thought yesterday was better than some days in the summer but its

:25:50.:25:53.

autumn and were starting to see changes on the trees, the lovely

:25:54.:25:59.

colours and this is how it looked at Tollymore forest. J Keogh looks like

:26:00.:26:03.

he had some fun chasing those leaves around. The fine weather is due to

:26:04.:26:08.

this area of high pressure from Scandinavia. We call this a blocking

:26:09.:26:14.

high because it is not going anywhere fast and it is preventing

:26:15.:26:20.

these weather systems from the Atlantic, they will dive off to the

:26:21.:26:24.

north or the south-east. There could be some thicker cloud of bringing

:26:25.:26:29.

showers this week but overall very little rain, some places will stay

:26:30.:26:32.

dry but the breeze will pick up towards the east coast and cloud

:26:33.:26:37.

amounts will vary, whether you have sunshine or not makes all the

:26:38.:26:41.

difference. It has ended up pretty sunny in most places, a little cloud

:26:42.:26:45.

this evening that it will get quite chilly. Temperatures could drop

:26:46.:26:51.

close to freezing in somewhere like Katesbridge so frost on the grass

:26:52.:26:54.

first thing, it would not be impossible for a little condensation

:26:55.:27:01.

on car windscreens and mist and fog in the valleys, which might lift up

:27:02.:27:05.

into low cloud for a short time after sunrise, but once that goes,

:27:06.:27:09.

although it will be chilly it should turn out to be a fine day with some

:27:10.:27:15.

good sunshine. Towards the east coast tomorrow there will be more of

:27:16.:27:20.

a breeze, so it will feel cooler and Bartok temperatures are likely to be

:27:21.:27:25.

out toward the West, around 15 degrees, the average for this time

:27:26.:27:30.

of year is 13. Tomorrow night, more cloud with the odd shower, and on

:27:31.:27:35.

Wednesday although it may start cloudy, it should get brighter as

:27:36.:27:43.

the day goes on and end up mostly dry. Our late summary is at 10:30pm.

:27:44.:27:45.
