We are back with the late news at 11pm.

:00:00.:00:11.

A young man remains critically ill after he was hit

:00:12.:00:15.

A section of the motorway has now reopened. Several cars were involved

:00:16.:00:31.

in this serious crash that led to the closure of the motorway in both

:00:32.:00:36.

directions overnight and into today. The 30-year-old driver lost his

:00:37.:00:43.

life. Two other men were hurt but their injuries are not thought to be

:00:44.:00:47.

life-threatening. The collision which led to the closure of this

:00:48.:00:53.

major road took place around 8:40pm last night. Police have appealed for

:00:54.:00:58.

any witnesses to come forward. Road closures were in place after

:00:59.:01:02.

Crossmaglen this morning after a hit and run incident this morning, a man

:01:03.:01:08.

was hit by a car, in his 20s, in a critical condition. A 19-year-old

:01:09.:01:17.

man seriously ill after he was stabbed in the back in Antrim last

:01:18.:01:18.

night. The incident happened

:01:19.:01:20.

after an altercation near the town centre at around 8.30pm.

:01:21.:01:23.

The police say a family group were chased by others

:01:24.:01:26.

on to the Dublin Road and assaulted. A man has been rescued after falling

:01:27.:01:36.

onto rocks on the County Down coast. He was flown by helicopter to

:01:37.:01:39.

hospital in Belfast. It was all change in education

:01:40.:01:48.

in 20-16, with DUP ministers taking over responsibility.

:01:49.:01:55.

As our education correspondent Robbie Meredith reports,

:01:56.:01:56.

Almost immediately, he changed his Sinn Fein predecessor's policy in

:01:57.:02:08.

the transfer tests, allowing primary schools to prepare pupils for them.

:02:09.:02:13.

The tests were based around where the curriculum is anyway so this is

:02:14.:02:18.

not a major diversion. -- divergence. There has always been

:02:19.:02:24.

the option to opt in or out. Everyone wants the best for their

:02:25.:02:28.

children but the best of giving of education. A shared future for

:02:29.:02:33.

everybody so you don't have a system of house and have-nots, of

:02:34.:02:34.

apartheid. Mr Weir also came under pressure

:02:35.:02:48.

from the teaching unions overpay. We are worth more than 0%. He responded

:02:49.:03:00.

by calling the striking action futile. SINGING

:03:01.:03:10.

Meanwhile, the education authority run into controversy over its

:03:11.:03:16.

decision to cut hours from pupils in bursaries, a move opposed by some

:03:17.:03:19.

parents, principles and the former Education Secretary live on BBC.

:03:20.:03:27.

They need to make sure they are providing the proper facilities for

:03:28.:03:32.

young people's educational needs. A review of those plans is ongoing.

:03:33.:03:36.

There was plenty to celebrate with rises in GCSE and a level results

:03:37.:03:41.

and primary school pupils declared the best in Europe in international

:03:42.:03:48.

maths tests. At the other end of the education scale, more young people

:03:49.:03:52.

from Northern Ireland are never entered university this year but

:03:53.:03:56.

paying for their education remains a problem. A document from Queen is

:03:57.:04:00.

obtained by the BBC, called for significant rises in government

:04:01.:04:02.

funding or student tuition fees. A windsurfer from Belfast says

:04:03.:04:08.

he's determined to gain the world record for the crossing

:04:09.:04:12.

from Ireland to Scotland. Chris Loughridge has already made

:04:13.:04:15.

the trip this summer but, as Will Leitch reports,

:04:16.:04:17.

there was a dispute over Dismayed meant a lot to Chris. He

:04:18.:04:29.

made his plans in June this year and got on with it. Scotland, here we

:04:30.:04:35.

come. There were challenging conditions on the crossing. It was

:04:36.:04:40.

very difficult to sail in the right direction because of the wind and we

:04:41.:04:43.

eventually worked out that if we sailed down the waves, that would

:04:44.:04:50.

push me down. The waves were coming from all directions that you were

:04:51.:04:54.

sailing along and then a wave would come in the opposite direction and I

:04:55.:04:58.

fell a few times because it was completely out of control. The

:04:59.:05:03.

arrival of the Scottish coast an hour and a half later clearly meant

:05:04.:05:08.

a lot. That is where we came out of the list and I thought, that will

:05:09.:05:15.

do. Nobody holds the world speed record for windsurfing the channel

:05:16.:05:19.

but Chris Wood to be getting it just yet. Guinness world records will not

:05:20.:05:25.

accept across the north where Chris did his, but only further south. The

:05:26.:05:30.

former record bid has now been rejected at the Guinness world

:05:31.:05:33.

records say they are sorry he was unsuccessful... But are unable to

:05:34.:05:39.

rectify the record. Will he have another go? I will definitely give

:05:40.:05:45.

it a go. He will be hoping for better weather.

:05:46.:05:49.

Time now for a look at what the weather has

:05:50.:05:51.

in store for the day ahead, here's Angie Philips.

:05:52.:05:54.

Not a bad day for walking off the excesses of Christmas,

:05:55.:05:59.

It was a dry day and that is because we have high pressure in charge,

:06:00.:06:04.

sitting on the near continent, keeping those weather fronts at bay,

:06:05.:06:07.

although we are at the periphery so some of those isobars gathering

:06:08.:06:10.

a little bit and that will bring the breeze up in places through this

:06:11.:06:13.

Particularly towards the north and west.

:06:14.:06:16.

A bit more cloud around the north-east parts as well,

:06:17.:06:18.

maybe threatening a spot of drizzle but generally speaking,

:06:19.:06:21.

it is dry and fairly clear still for parts of the east

:06:22.:06:23.

and south-east and this is where will see our lowest temperatures,

:06:24.:06:26.

getting close to freezing in some rural areas, and that will give

:06:27.:06:30.

So, a chilly start in places tomorrow but a decent day coming up,

:06:31.:06:35.

a lot of dry and fairly bright weather, though during the morning,

:06:36.:06:37.

there could still be a fair amount of cloud across parts

:06:38.:06:40.

of the north and west. That breeze as well.

:06:41.:06:42.

The best of any hazy sunshine to the south-east.

:06:43.:06:44.

That band of cloud and brisk winds extends up into Scotland,

:06:45.:06:47.

bits and pieces of drizzly rain towards the north west as well.

:06:48.:06:50.

Dry and bright across the Republic and it brightens up across much

:06:51.:06:53.

of England and Wales after a frosty start.

:06:54.:06:55.

But there will be fog in places as well, which could be slow

:06:56.:06:58.

to clear, particularly across the Midlands,

:06:59.:06:59.

eastern England. Could have an impact on the airports

:07:00.:07:02.

if it does linger and it will also feel quite cold.

:07:03.:07:04.

But it the sunshine, getting up to 7 to 9 degrees.

:07:05.:07:07.

For Northern Ireland in the afternoon, even the north

:07:08.:07:10.

and west will be seeing some bright spells developing.

:07:11.:07:12.

Highs getting up to around 7 or 8 degrees, with those bright

:07:13.:07:15.

I think over the next few days, offered a lot of cloud

:07:16.:07:21.

in the forecast, a bit more breeze but mainly dry and the temperatures

:07:22.:07:25.
