A couple from County Down have been conned out of almost ?5,000

after becoming the latest victims of an online

Since March, three other people in Northern Ireland have been

defrauded of some ?13,000 between them.

One of the victims has been explaining how he was conned

Ian Lowe was looking at cars on a second-hand car website when he was

hooked in by the scam. He acquired about this Audi. It looked a

reasonable price, ?4000 for a 2010 car so I thought I would enquire

into it more so I tried to bring the telephone number at the time and it

went to an answering machine. So I left it and then I got a text

message from Catherine Matson. You could not speak to her directly?

Never spoke to her. So everything from Enron was done by e-mail and

you told me the story about how she had worked in idea in Belfast and

had the car and took it home to Sweden with her and it was no use in

Sweden because it was a right-hand drive car. But the Audi, which was

apparently being shipped to Belfast, never arrived. The ?4000 he wired to

another bank disappeared. I was devastated. I have a young family

with four children and at this time of year it is just devastating to

lose that amount of money and then to be told you might never see it

again is even worse. It is very common. We have had several people

who have lost money and people who have shown interest in buying the

car is, some of them have been canny enough not to go further with the

purchase because they have smelt a rat. It is easy to say after the

event, but the message from trading standards and the Department of the

economy is that if you're going to buy a second-hand car, make sure you

In the Arts, 2016 was a year in which we said goodbye to some

notable local names in music, art and literature.

Our Arts Correspondent Robbie Meredith takes a look back.

Some important local voices fell silent this year. This singer

succumbed to cancer aged only 54. Sir Van Morrison was among those to

pay tribute. While Sir Paul McCartney said he was very sad to

hear of the death of his former guitarist Henry McCulloch. Basil

Blackshaw also passed away in 2016. He was a painter who was so deeply

rooted in the Ulster countryside and particularly Antrim and North Down,

where he grew up. An artist inspired by black shop made headlines of his

own. Colin Davidson's project of the Queen was unveiled in November.

Anthony Boyle earned rave reviews for his performances in Harry Potter

and The Said Child. My character is a bit of a bad egg in the books.

There are also some notable birthdays. The Ulster Orchestra

celebrated 50 years. While the Undertones marked 40 years together.

We are still playing in the band with people that we knew when I was

15 years old. And we still talk. Usually. On the big screen, the

Journey, a fictional account of the relationship between Martin

McGuinness and Ian Paisley, was premiered at the prestigious Venice

film Festival. Northern Ireland is getting set to say goodbye to small

screen hit Game of Drones. But winter has not quite, yet. There are

still two more series to go. It's been a year of sporting

triumphs for Northern Ireland: The Euros, Carl Frampton,

Jonathan Rea to name but a few, but what about

East Belfast Ladies FC? Kelly Bonner went along to meet

the team who are creating It is a cold, wet December evening

but it has not put these women of coming to training and practice and

the pressure is on. We did the double last year. We want to go for

the league and for more trophies again this year. 18 months ago, East

Belfast Ladies did not exist, but now they are in the history books

after their unbelievable league and cup winning debut season. We had a

year to build and grow and see how we got on. And we have got to where

we are now, winning the double. I have played football for 22 years

now and my career was coming to an end. And now we have gone and done

the double and I have a whole range of new friends now, people that I

did not know before. And some of the girls have come on leaps and bounds.

It has been great to be a part of. Fast steps! On the toes! Well done.

We took a view hammerings at first and it is hard but once we got the

girls used to training a few times a week, they were dedicated and the

experienced as followed naturally and we went on to do the double in

our first season. And the East Belfast Ladies are hoping for the

same success in 2017. Ulster rugby will be without Ireland

internationals Rory Best, Iain Henderson Paddy Jackson

of the league campaign - and the coach says there have been

plenty of positives We have managed to negotiate through

the circumstances throughout the year and some injuries but some

Good evening. Things will be turning colder as we head into January but

for what remains of December, it will be rather mild. It stays quite

mild tonight. Frost free with temperatures around 6-7 C. A cloudy

and breezy day coming up tomorrow. More so than today. Still mainly dry

but there could be pockets of drizzle, over the hills and the

parts of the West, but other than that it is a dry scene. When time
