Bishop Edward Daly was remembered today as a man of physical and moral

:00:09.:00:13.

His funeral mass at Saint Eugene's Cathedral in Londonderry was packed

:00:14.:00:17.

with family, friends and many of the people

:00:18.:00:19.

from the Derry diocese which he had served until his retirement

:00:20.:00:22.

Here's our North West reporter Keiron Tourish.

:00:23.:00:32.

President Michael D Higgins was among

:00:33.:00:33.

The respect and the former Bishop of Derry. What was great was seeing the

:00:34.:00:58.

sheer love that people had him. And Among the mourners,

:00:59.:01:02.

And representatives of the Queen, the British and Irish government's

:01:03.:01:04.

and the executive. a very lovely, quiet way. There was

:01:05.:01:14.

applause for a Church of Ireland Bishop.

:01:15.:01:15.

He left hospital where he was being treated

:01:16.:01:17.

Bishop Daly's enduring commitment, whether as a priest

:01:18.:01:20.

or a pastoral carer, dominated many thoughts today.

:01:21.:01:22.

His ministry was marked by a total dedication to the people he served.

:01:23.:01:36.

Wherever he was called to minister, that dedication was available

:01:37.:01:38.

in outstanding courage, in all sorts of different ways.

:01:39.:01:41.

He showed tremendous physical courage on Bloody Sunday,

:01:42.:01:43.

along with so many other people under the hail of bullets.

:01:44.:01:45.

And his moral courage was evident in his passionate struggle

:01:46.:01:48.

against violence and injustice from all quarters.

:01:49.:01:49.

And his passionate commitment to build a piece worthy

:01:50.:01:51.

of the people of this city and of this country.

:01:52.:01:54.

We all know it takes enormous courage to be a peacemaker.

:01:55.:02:01.

Tributes from Pope Francis, who said he was saddened

:02:02.:02:04.

His Holiness joins you in prayer of thanksgiving for his life.

:02:05.:02:17.

And in commending his soul to be merciful love of God, our father.

:02:18.:02:27.

Since his death, thousands of people have attended the cathedral

:02:28.:02:30.

Reflecting the impact that he had on their lives.

:02:31.:02:42.

My son took seriously ill and died in the Hospice.

:02:43.:02:54.

And Bishop Daly was brilliant with him and brilliant with us.

:02:55.:02:56.

He was a support and I will never forget him for it.

:02:57.:02:59.

I think Derry is brokenhearted over his loss.

:03:00.:03:01.

Four brothers travelled from County Fermanagh,

:03:02.:03:03.

We lived in one village and we went to school together.

:03:04.:03:06.

And we kept up the contact over the years.

:03:07.:03:10.

We can see over the past few days tens of thousands of people

:03:11.:03:14.

of the city and beyond just coming here to be there to

:03:15.:03:17.

And I think that speaks volumes about the affection he was held in.

:03:18.:03:28.

He was forthright in his criticism of violence and injustice.

:03:29.:03:30.

And, above all else, he stood by his principles.

:03:31.:03:34.

Violence was not the answer, whether it came from the loyalist

:03:35.:03:36.

For Edward, there was no halfway house on this.

:03:37.:03:40.

Violence was not going to bring the solution to our problems.

:03:41.:03:42.

For many, today was a time to reflect on the moments

:03:43.:03:58.

More often than not, in times of pain and anguish.

:03:59.:04:03.

For that, they will always remember him.

:04:04.:04:05.

Bishop Edward Daly was buried alongside his predecessor

:04:06.:04:06.

The First Minister Arlene Foster has insisted the DUP were not mistaken

:04:07.:04:20.

to campaign for Brexit, despite signing a letter together

:04:21.:04:22.

with the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness,

:04:23.:04:27.

which highlighted their shared concerns about its possible

:04:28.:04:30.

impact on the border, the economy and agriculture.

:04:31.:04:32.

Some Stormont opposition politicians have accused the DUP of performing

:04:33.:04:35.

a somersault in their letter to the Prime Minister

:04:36.:04:37.

over the forthcoming European negotiations.

:04:38.:04:43.

I think Brexit does give us a huge opportunity

:04:44.:04:45.

But we also have to deal with some of the challenges that

:04:46.:04:50.

This is not about point-scoring. This is about how we protect the

:04:51.:05:05.

interests of the people we represent and the challenges that lie ahead.

:05:06.:05:12.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the death

:05:13.:05:14.

He was in his thirties and was killed in an incident

:05:15.:05:18.

at Little Electrical Engineers in Queen's Place this morning.

:05:19.:05:20.

It's Day Six of the Olympic Games in Rio.

:05:21.:05:22.

For all the latest, here's Stephen Watson.

:05:23.:05:25.

There hasn't been much good news for team Ireland's boxes so far. One

:05:26.:05:33.

fighter failed a drugs test and three were knocked out the

:05:34.:05:39.

competition, including. But today Stephen Donnelly got their games

:05:40.:05:43.

back on track. A very impressive winner. With one win already,

:05:44.:05:48.

Stephen Donnelly walked with confidence to the ring today. This

:05:49.:05:54.

may be his first Olympics... But he seems to be revelling in the

:05:55.:06:02.

experience. The Palomino man won a tough fight on a split decision. --

:06:03.:06:06.

Palomino. It was a classy performance. The first half was

:06:07.:06:12.

catching him out and seeing what he was up to. I used my jab and long

:06:13.:06:19.

shots. And it will act in the end. How important was that for team

:06:20.:06:25.

Ireland? It was very important. We have had bad luck. But we are a

:06:26.:06:29.

great team. A strong team. And I showed that in that performance. It

:06:30.:06:37.

will only get better. -- the boxer from Ballymena. A silver medal at

:06:38.:06:43.

London 2012, he failed to make the final as a role at this time.

:06:44.:06:46.

It stays breezy tonight. Not good for catching the meteor shower. But

:06:47.:06:59.

there will be some clear skies. Temperatures around 14 degrees.

:07:00.:07:03.

Tomorrow, it will be rather cloudy. More unsettled weather heading our

:07:04.:07:08.

way. To begin with, some sunny breaks. Especially further east.

:07:09.:07:12.

Cloudier towards the West. That is ahead of a weather front that will

:07:13.:07:17.

move in from the Atlantic. It will bring through Ulster and thinking

:07:18.:07:22.

its way southwards. Many areas towards the south coast will stage

:07:23.:07:27.

dry with sunshine. A dry picture across England and Wales.

:07:28.:07:30.

Temperatures should reach the mid-20s. We are looking at 18 or 19

:07:31.:07:36.

degrees at best. Some rain around tomorrow afternoon. It will ease

:07:37.:07:41.

towards tomorrow evening. For the weekend, better news. Plenty of dry

:07:42.:07:46.

weather. Sunshine coming and going. The odd scattered shower to watch

:07:47.:07:48.

out for. Our next BBC Newsline is at 6:25am
