The Republic's cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss | :00:07. | :00:09.
its controversial tax arrangements with the technology giant Apple. | :00:10. | :00:14.
Earlier today the European Commission said the Irish government | :00:15. | :00:18.
had enabled Apple to enjoy huge tax benefits which it found to be | :00:19. | :00:19.
illegal and it ordered the firm to pay up to thirteen billion Euro | :00:20. | :00:22.
Our Economics and Business Editor John Campbell reports. | :00:23. | :00:39.
Apple is one of the world's best loved France. It sold its billion | :00:40. | :00:48.
Earth iPhone earlier this year, but it is billions of disputed tax which | :00:49. | :00:52.
has been at the centre of its clash with the European Commission and | :00:53. | :00:55.
today the commission ruled that Ireland had given Apple a special | :00:56. | :01:00.
deal which was a giant illegal subsidy. Here is what the commission | :01:01. | :01:05.
said it was going on... Apple set up a company in Ireland and all profits | :01:06. | :01:09.
from this European operations were booked by that company and an | :01:10. | :01:13.
arrangement with the Irish tax authorities meant that Apple could | :01:14. | :01:16.
send the vast majority of those profits away from Ireland to a | :01:17. | :01:19.
so-called head office. A loophole in Irish law meant this | :01:20. | :01:38.
head office did not have to pay tax anywhere in the world and as a | :01:39. | :01:41.
result, Apple had an effective corporate tax rate of less than 1%. | :01:42. | :01:44.
The effective tax rate in 2011 was 0.05%. To put that in perspective, | :01:45. | :01:48.
it means that for every million euro in profits, it paid just 500 euros | :01:49. | :01:55.
in taxes. The Irish government is aghast at this decision which paints | :01:56. | :02:01.
the country as a tax haven. It believes the commission is acting | :02:02. | :02:04.
far beyond its remit. I disagree with that. I think it is very | :02:05. | :02:10.
tenuous grounds. The Irish authorities at the time in 2007 did | :02:11. | :02:16.
nothing improper or illegal and there is a government meeting in the | :02:17. | :02:23.
morning and I will be proposing that the Irish government appealed this | :02:24. | :02:27.
decision. Apple has reacted furiously, the firm 's Chief | :02:28. | :02:31.
Executive says that the European Commission has attempted to rewrite | :02:32. | :02:36.
their history in Europe and ignore the Irish tax laws and then the | :02:37. | :02:41.
international tax system. Apple employs thousands of people in court | :02:42. | :02:44.
and the country's dilemma was reflected on the streets today. They | :02:45. | :02:54.
can pull up and leave. That would be terrible. It is great that there are | :02:55. | :02:59.
5000 jobs in Cork. We are delighted with that. They would not pull out | :03:00. | :03:04.
if they had to pay the money. We cannot afford to lose Apple. | :03:05. | :03:10.
Ireland's appeal will be a slow process, it is likely to be at least | :03:11. | :03:16.
five years before this case is closed once and for all. | :03:17. | :03:18.
Earlier our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison told me why the Irish | :03:19. | :03:20.
government was appealing the Commission's decision | :03:21. | :03:22.
when it could be 13 billion Euro better off. | :03:23. | :03:29.
Just to put that figure in context, 13 billion euros, ?11 billion, it is | :03:30. | :03:39.
the equivalent of the Irish annual health budgets, so why is the | :03:40. | :03:42.
government appealing? People are wondering, it is a bit like a | :03:43. | :03:47.
lottery winner who has won the lottery but is thinking about | :03:48. | :03:50.
tearing up the ticket before claiming the prize. A lot of the | :03:51. | :03:55.
answer has to do with reputation, the Irish government has come in for | :03:56. | :03:58.
criticism because it has been alleged that it is a tax haven and | :03:59. | :04:07.
the Irish government says that is not the case. It has closed a number | :04:08. | :04:10.
of loopholes and it is saying that it profoundly disagrees with the | :04:11. | :04:12.
findings. It says it gave no favourable deal to Apple and this | :04:13. | :04:16.
ruling is not about corporation tax, it is nothing to do with the low | :04:17. | :04:21.
corporation tax rate and the Irish government also says it is not its | :04:22. | :04:27.
job to collect tax in other European countries from Apple. For all of | :04:28. | :04:31.
those reasons, but mainly to do with its reputation, Ireland is not keen | :04:32. | :04:33.
to take that money at this stage. Apple is an american | :04:34. | :04:36.
company and tonight President Obama's Press Secretary | :04:37. | :04:38.
described the European Commission's It could be treated in the US tax | :04:39. | :04:54.
system as a current tax payment that would allow, essentially, Apple to | :04:55. | :05:03.
deduct that EU tax payment from their taxes. That would not be fair | :05:04. | :05:07.
to US taxpayers. Searches carried out by the police | :05:08. | :05:09.
in Larne today are linked to an investigation into terrorist | :05:10. | :05:12.
activity which resulted in the arrest of a 30 year | :05:13. | :05:14.
old member of the armed forces Police have sealed off this Town | :05:15. | :05:29.
Park area in Larne and it is understood a bomb disposal experts | :05:30. | :05:34.
are investigating a wooded area. The PSNI have confirmed that they are | :05:35. | :05:39.
also searching an area of Iceland next to Larne football club next to | :05:40. | :05:45.
Inver Road which is linked to an investigation into republican | :05:46. | :05:48.
terrorism. It is linked to the arrest of a 30-year-old member of | :05:49. | :05:53.
the Armed Forces, he has been named as Ciaran Maxwell, a Royal Marine. | :05:54. | :05:57.
He has been questioned about dissident terrorist activity and is | :05:58. | :06:00.
in custody. Although this area is more likely to be linked to the | :06:01. | :06:04.
loyalist community, the arrest of the Royal Marine is thought to be | :06:05. | :06:08.
connected to the discovery of two major arms dumps nearby. The first | :06:09. | :06:15.
was in this park in March, followed by another in May. The searches are | :06:16. | :06:21.
said to have caused a lot of local disruption. This is obviously the | :06:22. | :06:25.
local park where people go for walks, exercising dogs and children | :06:26. | :06:29.
and young families and I am aware that there have been a number of | :06:30. | :06:34.
homes evacuated, constituents in my area with young families and a local | :06:35. | :06:40.
business has been forced to close due to these ongoing searches. | :06:41. | :06:45.
Meanwhile a 27-year-old man from the Larne area has been arrested. He is | :06:46. | :06:49.
being questioned about dissident republican activity. | :06:50. | :06:51.
Notes and documents have been discovered by Gardai in the house | :06:52. | :06:53.
in County Cavan where five members of the same family were found dead | :06:54. | :06:56.
The bodies of Clodagh and Alan Hawe were discovered along with those | :06:57. | :07:02.
of their three sons in their home at Barconey outside | :07:03. | :07:04.
Our reporter, Catherine Morrison reports: | :07:05. | :07:15.
In the tranquil Cavan countryside a scene of unimaginable horror, five | :07:16. | :07:22.
members of the same family die in an apparent murder suicide. The bodies | :07:23. | :07:27.
of Alan Hawe pictured here with his three sons Liam, Niall and Ryan and | :07:28. | :07:32.
his wife Clodagh were discovered yesterday in their home near | :07:33. | :07:37.
Ballyjamesduff. Today the forensic investigation continues, Gardai | :07:38. | :07:40.
tried to answer two questions, Ohio and why this family died. It is | :07:41. | :07:45.
understood notes were left on the door of the property and inside, all | :07:46. | :07:51.
now part of this enquiry. The tragedy has left everyone struggling | :07:52. | :07:57.
to find words of comfort. I was speaking to the priest yesterday | :07:58. | :08:02.
evening and when I was speaking to him, he was still in a state of | :08:03. | :08:07.
shock himself. He told me that anyone he met, they were just numb | :08:08. | :08:14.
by this extraordinary and unprecedented event. It was so | :08:15. | :08:22.
shocking, because they were so well known in the community. Absolutely | :08:23. | :08:26.
shocked. Have you spoken to other neighbours? Everyone is in the same | :08:27. | :08:32.
situation. Those who knew the family and those who do not and it is not | :08:33. | :08:38.
just here, it is for miles around. We are all just speechless. Alan | :08:39. | :08:45.
Hawe was the deputy principal at Castlerahan National School. Pupils | :08:46. | :08:49.
were due back today after the summer holidays, instead educational | :08:50. | :08:52.
psychologists have been advising teachers on how best to help their | :08:53. | :08:56.
pupils deal with this tragedy. No one from the school wanted to speak | :08:57. | :09:02.
on camera but in a statement, the principal described Alan Hawe as a | :09:03. | :09:06.
valued member of school staff and she said that the three boys were | :09:07. | :09:09.
wonderful children who would be greatly missed by all who knew them. | :09:10. | :09:17.
Gardai are expected to remain at the scene for some time. | :09:18. | :09:19.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast says he will meet members of the Jewish | :09:20. | :09:22.
community and the police following an attack on Jewish graves | :09:23. | :09:25.
The police are treating it as a hate crime. | :09:26. | :09:28.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Brian Kingston surveys the damage for himself. 13 | :09:29. | :09:43.
graves in the Jewish part of the cemetery were targeted on Friday | :09:44. | :09:47.
afternoon. This does not represent the modern Belfast. Those | :09:48. | :09:52.
responsible need to catch themselves on. All of us obviously take great | :09:53. | :10:01.
pride and solace in visiting the graves of family members and our | :10:02. | :10:04.
forebears and none of us would like to have a situation where those | :10:05. | :10:07.
graves are vandalised and desecrated. The Lord Mayor says he | :10:08. | :10:12.
plans to meet with community representatives and the PSNI. For | :10:13. | :10:15.
some local people today, it was important for them to stand up to | :10:16. | :10:21.
those behind the attack. For evil to prevail, it takes good men to say | :10:22. | :10:25.
nothing and that is why I am here today. I have lived in the area for | :10:26. | :10:29.
20 years and have close bonds with the Jewish community and my heart is | :10:30. | :10:34.
broken for them. I want to see for myself what was done here on Friday | :10:35. | :10:39.
and it was not in my name. The Lord Maher says he is determined to bring | :10:40. | :10:43.
to justice those behind the attacks on Friday. | :10:44. | :10:47.
The senior Irish Olympic official, Pat Hickey, is now under | :10:48. | :10:49.
He was released from jail in Rio de Janeiro earlier today | :10:50. | :10:53.
The president of the Irish Olympic Council was arrested nearly | :10:54. | :10:57.
a fortnight ago in a police investigation into the alleged | :10:58. | :10:59.
illegal sale of tickets for the Olympic Games. | :11:00. | :11:11.
Football and in this evening's League Cup matches Championship side | :11:12. | :11:13.
Annagh United were shock 3-2 winners against Glentoran. | :11:14. | :11:15.
It's a result which brings more pressure on the tenure of Glentoran | :11:16. | :11:18.
Holders Cliftonville beat Lisburn Distillery 11-1 | :11:19. | :11:21.
and there were also wins for Linfield and Crusaders. | :11:22. | :11:25.
All the results are on the BBC sports website. | :11:26. | :11:31.
In the Airtricity League Derry City beat Shamrock Rovers one nil | :11:32. | :11:33.
and are now just two points off the top of table in third place. | :11:34. | :11:37.
Here is the weather forecast with Cecilia Daly. | :11:38. | :11:46.
Good evening. It has been another warm day, temperatures have been | :11:47. | :11:52.
into the low 20s, we do have some rain coming in from the western | :11:53. | :11:56.
night, just a few hours of work whether in most places, clearing the | :11:57. | :12:00.
East Coast in the early hours, many places dry by the end of the night | :12:01. | :12:05.
and still miles. Not too breezy, but we changed the wind direction, it | :12:06. | :12:09.
will move into the West for tomorrow, that will mean a few | :12:10. | :12:12.
showers especially in the north and west and it will feel cooler and | :12:13. | :12:23.
sunshine, the best of that over Belfast and the south-east. There is | :12:24. | :12:26.
the cloud and rain tonight, it moves into the East, towards the London | :12:27. | :12:33.
area but the rain will those allowed leaving an area of cloud, lots of | :12:34. | :12:37.
dry weather with sunshine behind it, it showers moving in across Scotland | :12:38. | :12:41.
and just the odd shower for the Republic of Ireland where it should | :12:42. | :12:46.
be a largely fine afternoon. A few showers for Northern Ireland mainly | :12:47. | :12:50.
in the north and west, but a lot of the day will be dry. Temperatures | :12:51. | :12:55.
will reach 18 or 19 degrees, it will feel pleasant, not as warm as today. | :12:56. | :13:00.
Thursday is the 1st of September, and nice morning, do what you have | :13:01. | :13:10.
to do outdoors in the morning because the afternoon will turn | :13:11. | :13:12.
cloudy and breezy with some rain coming from time to time. Moving | :13:13. | :13:15.
further towards the weekend, it is looking more unsettled, with some | :13:16. | :13:17.
rain around but it will not rain all the time. | :13:18. | :13:20.
