The widow of the murdered police officer Stephen Carroll has | :00:07. | :00:12.
expressed her anger at a jail visit by Sinn Fein politicians | :00:13. | :00:15.
Three members of the Assembly's justice committee went to Maghaberry | :00:16. | :00:21.
last week and met Brendan McConville and another Republican prisoner. | :00:22. | :00:25.
Sinn Fein says doubts have been raised over the convictions | :00:26. | :00:28.
of the two men jailed for killing Constable Carroll. | :00:29. | :00:32.
Our Political Correspondent Enda McClafferty reports. | :00:33. | :00:36.
Constable Stephen Carroll was the first PSNI officer to be | :00:37. | :00:39.
He was shot dead when his patrol was ambushed when responding | :00:40. | :00:44.
Three years later, these two men, Brendan McConville | :00:45. | :00:53.
and John Paul Wootton, were convicted of his murder. | :00:54. | :00:57.
Two years ago, they failed in a legal bid to have their | :00:58. | :00:59.
At the time, the Lord Chief Justice said he and his fellow appeal judges | :01:00. | :01:07.
were satisfied the guilty verdicts were correct. | :01:08. | :01:21.
But McConville and Wooten have continued to protest innocence. | :01:22. | :01:23.
Last week, a Sinn Fein delegation met the men in Maghaberry Prison. | :01:24. | :01:26.
It was led by Declan Kearney on the Justice Committee. | :01:27. | :01:28.
This is how he revealed details of the visit, | :01:29. | :01:31.
putting a video on his Twitter account. | :01:32. | :01:32.
We discussed the very serious concerns that relate | :01:33. | :01:35.
to the conviction of both of those prisoners. | :01:36. | :01:38.
Today's visit represents an opportunity for our party | :01:39. | :01:43.
to become increasingly informed as to the overall | :01:44. | :01:44.
But the visit has angered Stephen Carroll's widow. | :01:45. | :01:53.
I would ask any one of them who was sat on the court for 13 | :01:54. | :01:57.
weeks that I sat in each and every day for 13 weeks, | :01:58. | :02:00.
at the original trial, I heard how my husband's brain | :02:01. | :02:03.
I saw the actual gun that killed him. | :02:04. | :02:07.
I saw the reactions of the perpetrators, | :02:08. | :02:12.
Today, Pat Sheehan, a former prisoner and was part | :02:13. | :02:19.
of the delegation, defended the decision to meet Brendan | :02:20. | :02:21.
I can understand that Kate Carroll is hurt and that the suffering | :02:22. | :02:25.
she has had to deal with has been made worse by this. | :02:26. | :02:31.
However, to go back to the point, everyone is entitled to the highest | :02:32. | :02:37.
No matter who they are or where they are. | :02:38. | :02:42.
The DUP have dismissed the visit as a stunt, | :02:43. | :02:46.
which they say will only cause more hurt for the Carroll family. | :02:47. | :02:49.
They are convicted murderers, they have gone through the Court | :02:50. | :02:58.
of Appeal and the appeal was thrown out. | :02:59. | :03:00.
In fact, one of their sentences was increased. | :03:01. | :03:03.
So I think we have to be mindful that these individuals | :03:04. | :03:06.
Whatever the political fallout from the visit, Brendan McConville | :03:07. | :03:11.
and John Paul Wootton are still fighting to | :03:12. | :03:12.
They have taken their challenge to the criminal cases review | :03:13. | :03:18.
commission in the hope that it will refer their case back | :03:19. | :03:20.
There's a security alert in North Belfast. | :03:21. | :03:31.
Homes have been evacuated following the discovery | :03:32. | :03:33.
of a suspicious object in the Mount Vernon area. | :03:34. | :03:35.
Traffic is being diverted away from the Shore Road, | :03:36. | :03:38.
and Army technical officers are at the scene. | :03:39. | :03:46.
There was a suspicious device left on the windscreen of a car at Mount | :03:47. | :03:53.
Vernon house at the facts behind us. In doing so, the perpetrator has had | :03:54. | :04:01.
the whole front section of the fact evacuated, caused disruption to | :04:02. | :04:02.
citizens in this area. In what's been described | :04:03. | :04:05.
as a devastating blow for the North West, Ryanair | :04:06. | :04:07.
is stopping its flights from the City of Derry Airport | :04:08. | :04:09.
to London Stansted from the end The local council which runs | :04:10. | :04:12.
the airport says it will also lose its summer flight | :04:13. | :04:17.
to Faro in Portugal. Here's our North West | :04:18. | :04:19.
reporter Keiron Tourish. Since 1999, Ryanair has carried | :04:20. | :04:22.
4 million passengers through the City of Derry Airport, | :04:23. | :04:26.
the most popular route to London Stansted with 120,000 | :04:27. | :04:30.
passengers annually. But it is ending that | :04:31. | :04:34.
service next March. Liverpool flights will also be | :04:35. | :04:36.
reduced, although Glasgow will continue operating | :04:37. | :04:39.
at current levels. The council admits the loss | :04:40. | :04:42.
of the London route is a major blow. It is devastating losing | :04:43. | :04:49.
a connection to London. Obviously, Ryanair have been at this | :04:50. | :04:51.
airport for some time and I'm pleased to say they will | :04:52. | :04:54.
remain a major player, operating next summer | :04:55. | :04:56.
to Glasgow and Liverpool. But in terms of the | :04:57. | :05:01.
London connection, The plans that are in place | :05:02. | :05:03.
are to replace the London Stansted route with a much more frequent - | :05:04. | :05:14.
double if not triple - daily service to one | :05:15. | :05:17.
of the London airports. It costs rate payers | :05:18. | :05:18.
?2 million annually. We are going to be involved | :05:19. | :05:32.
in the process of securing an alternative carrier | :05:33. | :05:36.
for the London route through a public service obligation | :05:37. | :05:37.
mechanism with the Department We are working on that | :05:38. | :05:40.
at the moment. The council says the airport | :05:41. | :05:43.
is of critical importance Generating as it does | :05:44. | :05:45.
?16 million each year. The council is currently in talks | :05:46. | :05:49.
with the Stormont Executive and hopes to secure funding | :05:50. | :05:56.
of more than ?2 million The police ombudsman has made | :05:57. | :05:58.
a new appeal for information about a man who died | :05:59. | :06:06.
after he was arrested by police Gerard McMahon died after police | :06:07. | :06:09.
used CS spray to detain him following a disturbance | :06:10. | :06:16.
near the Grand Opera House The Police Ombudsman's office says | :06:17. | :06:18.
Mr McMahon left a nightclub in Pattersons Place shortly | :06:19. | :06:24.
after 2am, going to Howard Street and on to the Markets area, | :06:25. | :06:26.
before making his way The Ombudsman wants to hear | :06:27. | :06:29.
from anyone who saw him A man who was almost 2.5 times over | :06:30. | :06:34.
the alcohol limit and drove away from police at up to 90 mph has | :06:35. | :06:46.
admitted causing the death of a passenger | :06:47. | :06:48.
by dangerous driving. A car driven by 20-year-old Connor | :06:49. | :06:51.
Jeremia Briody was carrying five passengers when it crashed | :06:52. | :06:54.
into a roundabout at Johnston Bridge He had driven off at speed | :06:55. | :06:56.
when approached by police Briody, from Ferney Rise | :06:57. | :07:02.
in the town, will be The East Belfast MP, Gavin Robinson, | :07:03. | :07:09.
has claimed police officers have been asked to stop bail checks | :07:10. | :07:13.
on a man accused of murdering the prison officer | :07:14. | :07:16.
Adrian Ismay in March. The DUP politician was speaking | :07:17. | :07:19.
during a Westminster debate Here's our political | :07:20. | :07:21.
correspondent, Stephen Walker. Libya has compensated US victims | :07:22. | :07:29.
of terrorism, but UK victims Gavin Robinson used the debate | :07:30. | :07:42.
to highlight the car bomb attack on prison officer Adrian Ismay, | :07:43. | :07:51.
in which Semtex was believed The MP claimed the PSNI | :07:52. | :07:53.
were stopping bail checks on the man I received information that PSNI | :07:54. | :07:58.
chiefs sent an e-mail to the officers not to conduct bail | :07:59. | :08:04.
checks because there were far too Offending the sensitivities of a man | :08:05. | :08:13.
who is alleged to be the murder Tonight, the PSNI | :08:14. | :08:18.
responded, saying... In today's debate, Tom Elliott calls | :08:19. | :08:33.
on Martin McGuinness to help. Indeed, I believe the Deputy First | :08:34. | :08:38.
Minister could give support and help and assistance, | :08:39. | :08:43.
but he is not prepared to do If we are to deal with the past | :08:44. | :08:48.
and deal with these aspects of Libya, Martin McGuinness | :08:49. | :08:52.
and his colleagues need to come out and be absolutely | :08:53. | :08:55.
clear where they stood. In response, Sinn Fein said victims | :08:56. | :09:00.
have a right to the truth and described Tom Elliott's remarks | :09:01. | :09:03.
as a stunt. Ian Paisley said those | :09:04. | :09:05.
seeking compensation They are sick and tired | :09:06. | :09:07.
of the dilly-dallying and delays. Many of them are coming to, | :09:08. | :09:14.
let's face it, the latter The Southdown MP Margaret Ritchie | :09:15. | :09:16.
said victims' rights What happened by | :09:17. | :09:27.
Colonel Gaddafi and the Libyan government in supplying those | :09:28. | :09:38.
weapons to the IRA was both immoral, The Foreign Office Minister Tobias | :09:39. | :09:41.
Ellwood said he wants to see compensation paid and he is to raise | :09:42. | :09:44.
the matter when he meets 100 years ago today, the great | :09:45. | :09:47.
writer Roald Dahl was born. And as many schools remember him | :09:48. | :09:55.
on this special day, one in County Tyrone has | :09:56. | :09:59.
a particular reason to celebrate. Primate Dixon Primary School | :10:00. | :10:01.
in Coalisland has a poem penned by Roald Dahl for children | :10:02. | :10:04.
at that very school. It is the poem that was lost | :10:05. | :10:10.
for almost 30 years. Tucked away in a dusty drawer, | :10:11. | :10:13.
this previously-unpublished rhyme by Roald Dahl was written | :10:14. | :10:16.
for primary five pupils Now this letter from the man behind | :10:17. | :10:20.
Matilda, the BFG and the Witches No-one had any idea of the replies | :10:21. | :10:28.
since that time, and four years ago, one of our teachers were squaring up | :10:29. | :10:45.
a desk when she came We couldn't believe | :10:46. | :10:48.
the find that it was. Roald Dahl has links around | :10:49. | :10:54.
the world, from Norway And his works have also had | :10:55. | :10:57.
a lasting impact on pupils at Primate Dixon Primary | :10:58. | :11:01.
School in Coalisland. What is your favourite | :11:02. | :11:03.
Roald Dahl book? Here, it is just another way | :11:04. | :11:08.
for the author's magical There's no whacks on the bum | :11:09. | :11:26.
when you can't do a sum, instead Football, and in the Danske Bank | :11:27. | :11:32.
Premiership, the match between Glentoran and Glenavon ended | :11:33. | :11:47.
in a 2-2 draw. The weather outlook | :11:48. | :11:51.
now with Barra Best. We get some clear skies tonight, but | :11:52. | :12:03.
chilly in the countryside. Towards the EEC, cloud might bring wet | :12:04. | :12:13.
weather. But it will be 11 are 30 degrees for most of us. Tomorrow, it | :12:14. | :12:22.
will be mainly try. Scattered showers here and there, hit and | :12:23. | :12:28.
miss, not for everyone. If you are travelling tomorrow, the best of the | :12:29. | :12:33.
heat will be towards the south west of England. The further north and | :12:34. | :12:39.
west you are, cooler feeling. Scattered showers coming into some | :12:40. | :12:44.
Western areas of Ireland. We will get the sunnier gaps coming in of | :12:45. | :12:50.
the Irish Sea, temperatures 19 or 20 degrees in County Durham and... If | :12:51. | :13:01.
air out of dry weather expected, the rain sitting in the Atlantic could | :13:02. | :13:09.
snatch in for a time. A bit of a cooler day on Thursday, temperatures | :13:10. | :13:14.
between 16 and 18 degrees. Some rain in the forecast, but not a wash-out. | :13:15. | :13:21.
Sunny spells expected. The odd scattered shower on Friday, Saturday | :13:22. | :13:25.
is a cooler feeling day. | :13:26. | :13:30. |
