Good evening, welcome to BBC Points West. The headlines: jailed for

:00:19.:00:24.

bringing shame on the city. Protesters from Bristol climbed on

:00:24.:00:27.

to a drilling rig, to demonstrate against the method of extracting

:00:27.:00:31.

gas. Also tonight, one of the West's

:00:32.:00:38.

chief constables asks for tougher laws to control metalled theft.

:00:38.:00:47.

An expert uncovers the secrets of this Egyptian coffin.

:00:47.:00:50.

Good evening. Five men involved in the Gloucester riot son August have

:00:51.:00:57.

been jailed for a total of 13 years. The disturbances which centred

:00:57.:01:00.

around streets in Barton and Tredworth lasted for several hours.

:01:00.:01:04.

Jailing them, the judge said they had brought shame on the city, so

:01:04.:01:07.

people associated Gloucester with mob violence rather than a fine

:01:07.:01:16.

cathedral and docks. The riots in Gloucester surprised

:01:16.:01:21.

and upset many. It was driven by a criminal desire amongst some, to

:01:21.:01:25.

simply cause trouble, the judge said today. The court was told the

:01:26.:01:29.

ringleader was Gareth Rees, who sent messages on his BlackBerry,

:01:29.:01:37.

saying who wants a riot in Gloucester? Gareth Rees pleaded

:01:37.:01:42.

guilty to violent disorder. He was filmed throwing stones and a beer

:01:42.:01:48.

keg at police, and 80 attacked a pub near by. Also caught on camera

:01:48.:01:54.

was the lifting of the King Convenience Store. Thomas Townsley

:01:54.:02:00.

stole the tail and was jailed for 19 months. Shane Butler was jailed

:02:00.:02:10.
:02:10.:02:12.

for 15 months after carrying If you come into Gloucester, and

:02:12.:02:16.

you behave inappropriately and commit crime, you are likely to be

:02:16.:02:22.

caught, put before the courts, and expect to receive a stiff sentence.

:02:22.:02:27.

Also in court today was 19-year-old Michael Devoy, who was sent to a

:02:27.:02:30.

young offenders' institution for three years in -- for his part in

:02:30.:02:35.

the riots. Michael Smith was jailed for 10 months, he had worked for

:02:35.:02:40.

the NHS before he got caught up in the riot. He handed himself in to

:02:40.:02:45.

police. The court was told the actions of all five men stretched

:02:45.:02:51.

the police that night. The judge said the sentences would act as a

:02:51.:02:54.

deterrent for others tempted to behave this way of the future -- in

:02:54.:03:02.

the future. We are joined by the Home Affairs

:03:02.:03:06.

Correspondent, Steve Brodie. How do this in Princes compare to others

:03:06.:03:13.

handed out across the country? these sentences. In August, two men

:03:13.:03:17.

were given four years each for inciting a riot on Facebook. Last

:03:17.:03:21.

month another man in Cardiff was given four years for the same

:03:21.:03:28.

offence. In another case, a man was given 18 months for having a stolen

:03:28.:03:33.

TV in the back of his car. At the time, the chairman of the Bar

:03:33.:03:37.

Association, a top lawyer, said the sentences were too long and too

:03:37.:03:43.

harsh. On the other hand, Eric Pickles said this would show the

:03:43.:03:47.

rioters what they could expect. Recently, two brothers in Bristol

:03:47.:03:52.

were given seven years between them for their part in earlier

:03:52.:04:01.

disturbances. Watching the offences coming before Bristol magistrates,

:04:01.:04:04.

what struck me was the vast majority were being remanded in

:04:05.:04:09.

custody, but under normal circumstances they would have been

:04:09.:04:18.

allowed out on bail. Another factor is that lack of consistency. An 18-

:04:18.:04:22.

year-old was given one day for stealing two T-shirts. Another man

:04:22.:04:28.

was given 18 months for having a bottle of water -- stealing a

:04:28.:04:34.

bottle of water. Clearly we are all over the place on this. There is no

:04:34.:04:39.

doubt that the judiciary, with or without the prompting of the

:04:39.:04:43.

government, is going down the hard line of deterrent sentences for.

:04:43.:04:48.

is interesting. Plant. Two people have been arrested as

:04:48.:04:52.

protesters climbed on to a drilling rig in Lancashire, as part of a

:04:53.:04:57.

campaign against fracking, a method of extracting gas. The man and

:04:57.:05:01.

women are from the Rising Tide protest group in Bristol. Three

:05:01.:05:09.

others, who gained access to the rig, are still there. The company

:05:09.:05:12.

running the rig says they have nothing to hide.

:05:12.:05:15.

These pictures taken by the protesters show that they intended

:05:15.:05:25.
:05:25.:05:29.

to stay as long as possible. The brought food, warm clothing, and

:05:29.:05:36.

tools to climbed the tricks safely. -- climbed the rig safely. They

:05:36.:05:40.

were aiming to raise awareness of their campaign. If they start

:05:40.:05:47.

fracking from the red, there is a large chance they could contaminate

:05:47.:05:51.

what we're doing. We are not been crazy about this. There is a lot of

:05:52.:05:57.

evidence that it is a dangerous, dirty and expensive form of energy

:05:57.:06:06.

extraction. Fracking is massive business in the US. It is a gas

:06:06.:06:09.

rush generating huge wealth, but also a huge controversy. Engineers

:06:09.:06:15.

drill thousands of feet down through shale rocks, fracturing

:06:15.:06:19.

them and releasing gas. The protesters from Bristol and against

:06:19.:06:23.

the practice come here to the west, where companies have been licensed

:06:23.:06:29.

to survey the 170 square mile area, looking for reserves. In the

:06:29.:06:39.
:06:39.:06:39.

Mendips, there are concerns about contaminating water supplies.

:06:39.:06:44.

possible that the pipes will break, especially looking at these high

:06:44.:06:49.

pressures. And how do you fix a gas leak that low-down underground?

:06:49.:06:54.

company insists it is safe, and is open about the work. They say in a

:06:54.:06:57.

statement, we have nothing to hide, and welcome open dialogue with

:06:57.:07:03.

local people. We have shown over 100 people around the operational

:07:03.:07:08.

sites over the past year. So far, two members of the group have been

:07:08.:07:13.

arrested but the three who climbed on to the rigour remain in prison -

:07:13.:07:22.

- on to the rig remain in position. The protesters say they are staying

:07:22.:07:27.

put for now. The Crown Prosecution Service has

:07:27.:07:31.

confirmed it is liaising with police after a coroner ruled just a

:07:31.:07:34.

day that a six-year-old boy was unlawfully killed. Liam Hogan died

:07:34.:07:39.

after his father John pushed him off the balcony of a hotel in Crete.

:07:39.:07:44.

At the time, Mr Hogan was clear of murder by a Greek court, on the

:07:44.:07:47.

grounds of mental illness. The funeral of a husband and wife

:07:47.:07:52.

who died in the multi- vehicle crash on the M5 and so this --

:07:52.:08:01.

Somerset last month has taken place today. Tony and Pamela Adams were

:08:01.:08:04.

returning home to Newport after visiting their daughter in Taunton

:08:04.:08:07.

when they were killed. Five others also died and 51 were injured in

:08:07.:08:10.

the crash. Today's service was led by the Bishop of Monmouth, at St

:08:10.:08:17.

Mark's Church in Newport. Stay with us. There is still much

:08:17.:08:22.

more to bring you, including, in the running for Sports personality

:08:22.:08:27.

of the year, we meet a world champion who shares his tips with

:08:27.:08:35.

schoolchildren. I am here at the Bristol Christmas light switch on,

:08:35.:08:42.

the one that everyone is talking about.

:08:42.:08:46.

But first, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police has told

:08:46.:08:50.

the BBC he is pushing hard for tighter regulations to control the

:08:51.:08:55.

growing menace of metal theft. He wants a new law which would make it

:08:55.:08:59.

illegal for scrap dealers to pay cash for metal. It follows a spate

:08:59.:09:06.

of thefts in the region. Everything from reflect to manhole covers --

:09:07.:09:13.

led from roofs. St Paul's Church in Somerset, they

:09:13.:09:19.

have found a way to beat the thieves. On this flat roof, you can

:09:19.:09:26.

see it for. They have now taken the radical step of replacing the tiles

:09:26.:09:34.

with a plastic lookalike. They have been here four times, they thought

:09:34.:09:38.

it was Christmas and kept coming back when we replaced it. So we

:09:38.:09:44.

replace it with a different material, and we can tell through

:09:44.:09:50.

the way that the anti- vandal paint has been smeared, they have found

:09:50.:09:55.

out that it is plastic and they are very disappointed. Because this is

:09:55.:10:00.

a Grade 1 listed building, it had to be approved. -- by the British

:10:00.:10:04.

heritage. It is thought to be one of the first churches in the

:10:04.:10:10.

country to do this. During a recent raid here, the police came across

:10:10.:10:20.
:10:20.:10:20.

manhole covers, British Telecom copper cabling, and much more. The

:10:20.:10:24.

Chief Constable came to the BBC to see our footage. He admitted that

:10:24.:10:30.

it was hard to get successful prosecutions because cash deals by

:10:30.:10:36.

scrap traders made it hard to track down the thieves. What we are

:10:36.:10:40.

campaigning for, and what MPs are helping us to do, is to change the

:10:40.:10:44.

law so that no one can receive cash payments, so we know where the

:10:44.:10:49.

stuff came from and bass -- week and ask them where it came from and

:10:49.:10:53.

track whose property at us. This week the Government announced the

:10:53.:10:57.

setting-up of a metal theft task force. It is clear that the battle

:10:57.:11:04.

against the metal thieves is hotting up.

:11:04.:11:06.

A cheese-packing factory in Somerset is considering closing its

:11:06.:11:09.

plant after a recent fire. More than 100 firefighters were called

:11:09.:11:13.

out to deal with the blaze at the Adams Foods factory in September.

:11:13.:11:16.

The company wants to move its operations to a larger site in

:11:16.:11:22.

Staffordshire. If it does, 180 jobs would be lost in Wincanton. A

:11:22.:11:29.

decision will be taken at the end of February.

:11:29.:11:33.

A village in Gloucestershire which loses its internet connection every

:11:33.:11:43.
:11:43.:11:48.

time it rains is campaigning to get broadband. Purton is taking part in

:11:48.:11:50.

a project to improve broadband speeds in rural communities across

:11:50.:11:52.

the county. Without it, some villagers say local businesses

:11:52.:11:54.

cannot thrive. This is a close rural community.

:11:54.:11:58.

But when it comes to the internet, they want some equality. It all

:11:58.:12:02.

comes down to speed. In the big cities, average broadband

:12:03.:12:12.
:12:13.:12:14.

connections are around six megabits, but here they manage one at best.

:12:14.:12:19.

Sometimes e-mail is a noble, and on rainy days, they go off-line

:12:19.:12:24.

altogether. For people trying to make a living, it is serious and

:12:24.:12:31.

stops them doing their job. I deal with moving images, and for

:12:31.:12:36.

research and putting some footage together myself, it would be great

:12:36.:12:40.

if I had the facility to be able to do that, which I do not at the

:12:40.:12:45.

moment. There is this continued our urban drift, where people from

:12:45.:12:50.

small villages like ourselves, are forced to move into the towns for

:12:50.:12:54.

various reasons, to run their businesses. If a village is going

:12:54.:12:59.

to survive, it is essential that we have broadband. So now, a multi-

:13:00.:13:03.

million pound project is in place to put things right. A survey has

:13:03.:13:05.

been carried out across Gloucestershire to see how bad

:13:06.:13:12.

broadband speeds are. With a view of companies being encouraged to

:13:12.:13:19.

invest. We are putting the technology in

:13:19.:13:22.

place to improve the broadband, and we are going out there to as

:13:22.:13:25.

communities what they were want. Communities like this say that a

:13:42.:13:48.

about this Egyptian coffin. It is almost twice as old as previously

thought and one of the best- He was no more than four years old

:13:57.:14:02.

when he died. But judging by how he was buried, this little boy must

:14:02.:14:09.

have been very important. For a long time it was the one that got

:14:09.:14:15.

all the attention. The coffin was not considered important. But not

:14:15.:14:23.

any more. This expert is excited by this sarcophagus. We realised the

:14:23.:14:27.

whole thing has been carved by a single lot of wood. It has been

:14:27.:14:35.

carved out of wood from Lebanon. It is very expensive and imported.

:14:35.:14:41.

Anybody that can afford that must be significant. The coffin and

:14:41.:14:45.

occupant a remarkably well- preserved, given how old they are.

:14:45.:14:50.

It was thought they dated back to a similar period, making it about

:14:50.:14:55.

2000 years old. But it turns out it is much older than that, meaning it

:14:55.:15:03.

dates back to 1,500 BC. important thing is that we had only

:15:03.:15:09.

got two designs like that. It has been in Torquay since the 1950s.

:15:09.:15:14.

But how many times has it been used? It was last summer when Dr

:15:14.:15:19.

Dodson came to catalogue it that the real importance came to light.

:15:19.:15:23.

As we look in more detail, we realised just how high quality this

:15:23.:15:28.

piece was and how it could not possibly have belonged to somebody

:15:28.:15:33.

in significant. It was just an amazing find. An amazing find that

:15:33.:15:41.

now has pride of place. It was this woman, Lady Winnaretta Leeds, who

:15:41.:15:45.

brought the coffin to Britain in the 19th century. They have found
