Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight: | :00:15. | :00:19.
The Gas fitter accused of manslaughter. He denies doing a | :00:19. | :00:23.
botch job resulting in the death of a young woman. | :00:23. | :00:27.
The faulty breast implants scandal - concerns the effects could be | :00:27. | :00:33.
worse than first thought. I cannot walk very far. My life is a | :00:33. | :00:38.
nightmare. The cheese factory that was hit by | :00:38. | :00:42.
a fire pulls out of Somerset. Sacked workers are left with a sour | :00:42. | :00:47.
taste. And, down boy. We join the husky | :00:47. | :00:55.
races in the Forest of Dean. Good evening. A gas fitter has | :00:55. | :01:01.
denied killing a young woman from Bath by doing a botch job on a | :01:01. | :01:05.
boiler. Andrew Hartley fitted new equipment at Zoe Anderson's home. | :01:05. | :01:10.
Two weeks later she was dead. She had been overcome by carbon | :01:10. | :01:14.
monoxide fumes. Today, Mr Hartley admitted he had not finished the | :01:14. | :01:18.
work as he should have but denied manslaughter by gross negligence. | :01:18. | :01:23.
Andrew Plant was in court. Zoe Anderson was just 24 years old, | :01:23. | :01:27.
the daughter of a millionaire magazine publisher. During | :01:27. | :01:32.
Christmas 2010 she was overcome by toxic fumes in the shower room of | :01:32. | :01:36.
her home in Bath. Less than two weeks before she died, local | :01:36. | :01:41.
plumber and gas fitter Andrew Hartley had fitted a new boiler in | :01:41. | :01:45.
the roof of the garage here at the large family home. Today, he | :01:45. | :01:50.
arrived at Bristol Crown Court to face a charge of manslaughter. He | :01:50. | :01:55.
rushed the job, say the prosecution, and his negligent work led to the | :01:55. | :01:59.
death of Zoe Anderson. The prosecution accuse Andrew hardly of | :01:59. | :02:03.
not having his mind on the job on that December day. They said he | :02:03. | :02:09.
never finished fitting the boiler and left a crucial flue pipe | :02:09. | :02:13.
unconnected which caused Zoe Anderson's showroom to fill up with | :02:13. | :02:18.
deadly carbon monoxide. Early at this trial, an independent gas | :02:18. | :02:21.
expert called by the prosecution told the court that a carbon | :02:21. | :02:26.
monoxide detector would sound an alarm when levels reached 35 parts | :02:26. | :02:32.
per million. Levels are dangerous at 100. But after running the | :02:32. | :02:35.
boiler for one hour in Zoe Anderson's shower room, levels | :02:35. | :02:40.
would have reached 750 parts per million. Andrew Hardie admitted | :02:40. | :02:44.
today that when he connected the flue, the pipe that should carry | :02:44. | :02:49.
away harmful gases, he had not followed correct procedure. Screws | :02:49. | :02:54.
were missing in several places. But he denies leaving a gap in the | :02:54. | :02:59.
fitting or that the work he did was in any way dangerous. Carbon | :02:59. | :03:04.
monoxide poisoning kills more than 50 people a year in the UK. Next | :03:04. | :03:08.
week at Bristol Crown Court, a jury will decide whether Zoe Anderson's | :03:08. | :03:15.
death could have been avoided. A leading surgeon in the West is | :03:15. | :03:19.
calling for more urgent investigations into the effects of | :03:19. | :03:24.
faulty breast implants. Nigel Mercer from Frenchay Hospital says | :03:24. | :03:28.
it is common for women who have had leaking PIP implants to complain of | :03:29. | :03:32.
problems with their immune system. Matthew Hill has been talking to | :03:32. | :03:38.
some of them. This is a PIP implant. It was taken | :03:38. | :03:43.
out five weeks ago. Steffy Meissner paid thousands of pounds to have | :03:43. | :03:47.
her faulty PIP implants removed and replaced. She believes her health | :03:48. | :03:51.
was suffering because of the industrial silicon leaking into her | :03:51. | :03:59.
body. My glands here were also fallen. I would go away for a | :03:59. | :04:03.
couple of days, come back... her friend Tina from Bridgwater has | :04:03. | :04:08.
had problems as well. She has developed diseases of her immune | :04:08. | :04:11.
system including chronic fatigue syndrome. There is no absolute | :04:11. | :04:15.
proof but she is convinced her bad health is linked to the faulty | :04:15. | :04:20.
implants she has paid thousands for. I cannot walk free far. My life is | :04:21. | :04:26.
a nightmare. It has come to a stop at the minute. The two women met on | :04:27. | :04:29.
the social network site which features the counts of hundreds of | :04:29. | :04:33.
others who have claimed their health has suffered. At the moment | :04:33. | :04:38.
we are seeing an increase in women who have reported other systems -- | :04:38. | :04:44.
symptoms, neuralgia, pain in muscle joints. We know the implants have | :04:44. | :04:47.
things including the fire accelerate but we do not know what | :04:47. | :04:52.
the effect is on the body. That needs testing her urgently. What | :04:52. | :04:57.
evidence is there about the health effects of PIP implants? No link | :04:57. | :05:01.
with cancer has been found but a report published by a group of | :05:01. | :05:04.
European experts has raised questions about other health | :05:04. | :05:08.
problems. The silicone used was intended for mattresses and when | :05:08. | :05:13.
mice were injected with it, a study found it caused irritancy. In | :05:13. | :05:18.
humans, this could manifest itself as saw or enlarged lymph nodes or | :05:18. | :05:22.
sensation in the breast. Other implants which Hughes Medical | :05:22. | :05:28.
silicone were found to have no effect. Other implants which used | :05:28. | :05:33.
medical silicone were found to have no effect. It says the implications | :05:33. | :05:38.
for women is uncertain. Further investigation is required. | :05:38. | :05:43.
Something Tina Whatley's MP also wants to see. When we have so many | :05:43. | :05:48.
women with similar symptoms, various versions of NT, people with | :05:48. | :05:54.
gynaecological problems, we should be asking what has gone wrong. -- | :05:54. | :05:58.
versions of M E. Tina Whatley is due to have her implants removed | :05:58. | :06:02.
next week and hopes that will improve her health but fears the | :06:02. | :06:09.
damage may already have been done. Matthew is here with us now. This | :06:09. | :06:12.
is obviously very worrying for women watching this tonight but how | :06:12. | :06:17.
do they know if they have got a problem? Over the past ten years | :06:17. | :06:25.
there have been 40,000 women with PIP implants. Of those, they think, | :06:25. | :06:30.
the regulatory body thinks around 500 have had an adverse reactions | :06:30. | :06:34.
reported by their GPs. The problem is they have not broken down into | :06:34. | :06:37.
which category as those health problems are and that is something | :06:37. | :06:42.
which the end HR8 are adding further work on. What happens now? | :06:43. | :06:46.
If women are worried, if they have reached the implants, they will | :06:46. | :06:51.
have them removed by the NHS. If they are worried and the government | :06:51. | :06:54.
says in the long term they will get them removed eventually. So far we | :06:55. | :06:59.
have only had a dozen women who have had them removed on the NHS. | :06:59. | :07:04.
Thank you. On the pellet -- on Sunday Politics | :07:04. | :07:09.
we will look at whether there needs to be more regulation of this | :07:09. | :07:14.
multi-billion-pound industry. In other news, the man accused of | :07:14. | :07:17.
murdering a Thornbury Becker has made a brief appearance before a | :07:17. | :07:23.
High Court judge. -- a Thornbury vicar. Stephen Farrell is accused | :07:23. | :07:27.
of murdering John Suddards and retired teacher Betty Yates. He | :07:27. | :07:31.
appeared by video link and spoke only to confirm his name. | :07:31. | :07:36.
Business leaders in Wincanton in Somerset say it will be hard to | :07:36. | :07:40.
replace jobs lost when one of the town's biggest employers relocates | :07:40. | :07:46.
to Staffordshire. More than 150 local jobs are to go next week. The | :07:46. | :07:51.
company, Adams Foods, was hit by a major fire. | :07:51. | :07:55.
Leaving their production shift this afternoon and for many, it was time | :07:55. | :08:01.
for emotional goodbyes. The mood here is understandably downbeat. | :08:01. | :08:07.
knew it was coming. Now it is nearly here, it is sad times. I | :08:07. | :08:11.
have worked here for 12 years. Gutted the place is going but time | :08:11. | :08:17.
to move on, I suppose. Four it will be hard for everyone. Adams foods | :08:17. | :08:22.
packs cheese here, the main brand, Pilgrims Choice Cheddar. It is | :08:22. | :08:26.
winding down its Somerset operation. The majority of the work force will | :08:26. | :08:31.
be gone by next Wednesday. The company was in the headlines last | :08:31. | :08:34.
September when its cheese warehouse and everything inside it was | :08:34. | :08:39.
destroyed by one of the biggest fires in Somerset for years. It was | :08:39. | :08:43.
shortly after that that the company said it was considering relocating | :08:43. | :08:48.
its packing business to a state of- the-art factory in Leek in | :08:48. | :08:51.
Staffordshire. At the time they said the fire had been a | :08:51. | :08:54.
contributory factor. Adams is one of the biggest | :08:55. | :08:59.
companies in Wincanton. At its height, this place employed 180 | :08:59. | :09:04.
people. Most of the local jobs have now gone. Adams say this place will | :09:04. | :09:09.
not shut completely. About 25 people will be kept on. Another 25 | :09:09. | :09:13.
have decided to move with the company to Staffordshire. Among | :09:13. | :09:18.
them, Polish-born Karolina and her husband. If they give me a chance | :09:18. | :09:23.
to keep my job then I will go there. I like changes so it is a new | :09:23. | :09:29.
challenge for me. Inevitably, that means significantly fewer wage | :09:29. | :09:34.
packets in Wincanton, a blow to a small town economy. Business | :09:34. | :09:38.
leaders say the priority must be to attract new employers but they know | :09:38. | :09:42.
that will not be easy. You are in the middle of a depression, not | :09:42. | :09:47.
just the UK but Europe, worldwide, everyone is cutting back so there | :09:47. | :09:51.
are few opportunities to bring business into town. As for the | :09:51. | :09:58.
future of the site, the company tell us it is too soon to say. | :09:58. | :10:04.
It is coming up to 20-7, we are live here on BBC One. We have | :10:04. | :10:10.
Friday's Points West. Your weekend starts right here. The full | :10:10. | :10:13.
forecast coming saying plus, pushing hard for promotion - we | :10:13. | :10:18.
will be at the Memorial Stadium as Bristol Rugby try to inch closer to | :10:18. | :10:24.
the Premiership. I feel tired just looking at that! | :10:24. | :10:28.
We continue with more news. First, a school in south Gloucestershire | :10:28. | :10:33.
had to be closed today after a suspicious fire. Crews were called | :10:33. | :10:38.
to St Mary's Church of England Primary in Yate early this morning. | :10:38. | :10:40.
Classrooms were damaged and an investigation has begun into the | :10:40. | :10:45.
cause. All the effort that we put into making the school a better | :10:45. | :10:48.
place for the children, all the effort the parents put into making | :10:48. | :10:52.
the school experience valuable and things like this happen. It feels | :10:53. | :10:57.
so disappointing. We were meant to be having our cake sale today and | :10:57. | :11:02.
our cakes would have been going stale. My class was supposed to | :11:02. | :11:06.
doer class assembly that we have been trying to rehearse all week | :11:06. | :11:12.
and now we can't do it. It is like a big let-down. It is just annoying. | :11:12. | :11:15.
The school will stay closed on Monday and Tuesday next week | :11:15. | :11:19.
because of the damage caused by smoke. | :11:19. | :11:22.
A young man says he has been attacked for parking in disabled | :11:23. | :11:28.
spaces because other drivers do not think he looks unwell enough. Marc | :11:29. | :11:33.
Pyle from Wilshere has a muscle- wasting disease but it does not | :11:33. | :11:42.
show out with symptoms -- Wiltshire. Marc Pyle is 25 years old. He was | :11:42. | :11:46.
diagnosed with muscular dystrophy aged just seven. He is able to walk | :11:46. | :11:51.
but only slowly and for short periods. It is all right sometimes, | :11:51. | :11:57.
depending on whether and staff but generally, I do find it quite hard. | :11:57. | :12:02.
That is why I need a blue badge for disabled parking. But it is that | :12:03. | :12:07.
blue badge which has made him the victim of what he sees as a hate | :12:07. | :12:11.
crime. He uses it to park in disabled spaces like this one in | :12:11. | :12:14.
Cricklade and has found himself on the wrong end of some very angry | :12:14. | :12:19.
words. Verbally assaulting year and shouting at you, saying you're not | :12:19. | :12:24.
disabled, why are you parking there? At other times, getting | :12:24. | :12:28.
people trying to park their car in that space to stop you get into it | :12:28. | :12:33.
or moving their car to make it hard for you to park. Marc Pyle believes | :12:33. | :12:37.
that happens because despite this badge, the signs of his disability | :12:37. | :12:42.
are not that obvious. He says the problems he has experienced as a | :12:42. | :12:46.
disabled driver, using his permit to park in NO-SPACE like this one, | :12:46. | :12:51.
announced a form of abuse. It seems the difficulties he have | :12:51. | :12:56.
experienced is far from unique. story is tragic because it is not | :12:56. | :13:01.
that uncommon. Win a two-thirds of disabled people around the UK say | :13:01. | :13:06.
they may have been the victim of a disability hate crime recently. | :13:06. | :13:11.
Next week, Marc Pyle will travel to Westminster to speak to MPs. A | :13:11. | :13:15.
chance, he hopes, to improve awareness and make a difference | :13:15. | :13:25.
:13:25. | :13:26. | ||
that will make life better for Plans for a new supermarket on the | :13:26. | :13:31.
side of the Memorial Stadium in Bristol have been unveiled. The | :13:31. | :13:34.
project has not yet received planning permission and it will | :13:34. | :13:40.
only go ahead if a new stadium is built next to beat University of | :13:40. | :13:48.
the West of England Pampers. Bristol rugby are in action tonight | :13:48. | :13:53.
and we can cross there now. David Passmore is there for us now. David, | :13:53. | :14:01.
are they heading back to the They have got to be favourites. | :14:01. | :14:05.
This is the final match of their regular league season. They are | :14:05. | :14:11.
top-of-the-table, but there is plenty of rugby to go. There is a | :14:11. | :14:17.
total of 10 games in the play-offs if they want to reach the league. | :14:17. | :14:20.
This is in marked contrast to last year. | :14:20. | :14:25.
Are just some of the new faces that have helped Bristo rise to the top | :14:25. | :14:31.
of the leak. It is not just players, there is a new man at the top, too, | :14:31. | :14:36.
Stephen Lansdown. He is a self-made millionaire now officially back in | :14:36. | :14:46.
the club. You can have confidence in Liam Middleton. The fans like | :14:46. | :14:49.
him and the players obviously play for him. Tactically he seems to be | :14:49. | :14:55.
very aware of what needs to be done. I think he is a winner but in a | :14:55. | :14:59.
very quiet manner. Since taking over in the summer, Middleton has | :14:59. | :15:05.
introduced a new culture. Pushing the players harder, but in a long | :15:05. | :15:09.
season he is making sure that they are looked after. We have | :15:09. | :15:14.
implemented the right values and the right style. There is no | :15:14. | :15:21.
negotiation on that. It is a strong, tough culture, do not get me wrong. | :15:21. | :15:27.
There are some hard things that go on in this club. Just 12 months ago, | :15:27. | :15:30.
Bristol were in eighth place. They just scraped into the play-offs. | :15:30. | :15:40.
:15:40. | :15:42. | ||
Now, they are proudly at the top of the tech -- table. Their success | :15:42. | :15:49.
has brought some old faces back. There is more attention to detail. | :15:50. | :15:55.
It is really particular because we know that when we get out on the | :15:55. | :16:00.
field it's that kind of detail that will make the difference. The club | :16:00. | :16:05.
now face a 10 game a play-off system to return to the top flight. | :16:05. | :16:09.
We plan on being in the championship next season. We are | :16:09. | :16:16.
hoping that it will be a case of being in the league, but we are | :16:16. | :16:20.
realistic. We will keep working at it until we get there. With the | :16:20. | :16:24.
momentum that Bristol have at the moment, you would not bet against | :16:24. | :16:30.
them getting there. Joining me now, and legend of | :16:30. | :16:35.
Bristol and England at rugby, Mark Regan. Can Bristol go up and could | :16:35. | :16:41.
they stay up? Most definitely. They are recruiting well and that they | :16:41. | :16:46.
are bringing some good Bristo lads back as well. They have tougher | :16:46. | :16:53.
games coming up. They will have four Cup finals. This Bristol team | :16:53. | :17:01.
of very good. There they will go up this year, I feel. There is scope | :17:01. | :17:08.
for a slip up, though, isn't there? Definitely, that has been proven. | :17:08. | :17:13.
It's is a tough league and it will come down to experience. Bristol | :17:13. | :17:19.
have been there and done it before. How bigger golf is there between | :17:19. | :17:25.
the championship and the Premiership? It is huge. But | :17:25. | :17:30.
Bristol has filled things quite nicely of late. Investment has been | :17:30. | :17:36.
really important. The club can go from strength to strength. Bristol | :17:36. | :17:40.
have been in the Premiership before and they can go a long wave. They | :17:41. | :17:47.
now have the foundation. They have got a great fan base as well? | :17:47. | :17:51.
certainly have. I am looking forward to this place being packed | :17:51. | :17:57.
out. Do you miss it? I do indeed. I am playing in some charity matches | :17:58. | :18:04.
in. Thank you. Bath and Gloucester are both in action in the | :18:04. | :18:09.
Premiership tomorrow and Jameson son Daniel makes his 200 and 50th | :18:09. | :18:18.
appearance for them. Now to football, no match for Bristol | :18:18. | :18:23.
Rovers tomorrow. They hope to continue their mini revival at | :18:23. | :18:28.
Rotherham. Swindon are clearly flying. Their latest victory was on | :18:28. | :18:36.
Tuesday night over promotion rivals, Shrewsbury. The man aged -- the | :18:36. | :18:46.
:18:46. | :18:46. | ||
manager is pleased to be two points clear. If you have a chance to win | :18:46. | :18:51.
another two or three games, you extend the gap between you and a | :18:51. | :19:01.
:19:01. | :19:03. | ||
fourth place. We want to extend this gap. There is no one like him. | :19:03. | :19:07.
These are exciting times for Forest Green Rovers, they are doing well | :19:07. | :19:10.
in the lead of three of their players have been chosen to | :19:10. | :19:20.
:19:20. | :19:22. | ||
represent their country. They will This is the trio who are on England | :19:22. | :19:32.

Jodie. There are 16 players in the England squad. It is great | :19:40. | :19:45.
recognition for the football club. It shows everybody that we are a | :19:46. | :19:52.
young and mixed bunch and that we have some good, young players. | :19:52. | :19:55.
Everybody is tremendously proud of the three players getting in the | :19:55. | :20:01.
squad. Time to have lunch and talk opposition, shop windows and the | :20:01. | :20:08.
Three Lions. It is a cracking feeling. You look at the crowd and | :20:08. | :20:13.
whatever level it is it is a real honour to play for your country. | :20:14. | :20:18.
you will sing the national anthem, that will be special? Yes, I will | :20:18. | :20:27.
be singing along. What will Italy's level be like? The Italian first | :20:27. | :20:31.
team are brilliant, what will they be like at your level? It will be a | :20:31. | :20:40.
tough game. I respect them a little bit. It will be a fun game. There | :20:40. | :20:44.
will be managers from the Football League, will it be a shop window | :20:44. | :20:48.
for you? You do not really think about that. You just think about | :20:48. | :20:55.
trying to play well for your country. I have got family going up | :20:55. | :21:00.
and all I want to do is play well. These are good times at Forest | :21:01. | :21:05.
Green, the first team are just seven points off the play-offs and | :21:05. | :21:08.
they have three players in the England C Scott. You never know who | :21:08. | :21:18.
:21:18. | :21:22. | ||
will be watching next Tuesday. Shelley Rudman and Amy Williams had | :21:22. | :21:28.
just missed out on Wed -- medals at the World Championships. Shelley | :21:28. | :21:32.
Rudman was in third place at the halfway stage overnight, but she | :21:32. | :21:37.
slipped to fourth in the final two runs this afternoon. Amy Williams | :21:37. | :21:44.
moved up from sixth spot to fifth. Lizzie Arnold finished in third | :21:44. | :21:49.
place getting a bronze medal. There is commentary of this game here | :21:49. | :21:54.
tonight on BBC Radio Bristol medium wave. Mark Regan is part of the | :21:54. | :22:00.
commentary team. There is commentary of all of the games we | :22:00. | :22:10.
:22:10. | :22:20. | ||
Thank you. Dozens of teams from across the country have descended | :22:20. | :22:25.
on the Forest of Dean for a weekend of high-speed racing and it is with | :22:25. | :22:34.
huskies. That dogs macro drag competitors along the dirt tracks. | :22:34. | :22:44.
:22:44. | :22:53. | ||
The racing is under way. These dogs macro can go pretty fast and they | :22:53. | :23:00.
can go a long way, too. It takes a certain kind of person to do this | :23:00. | :23:05.
sport, but it is getting bigger. They look soft and cuddly, but | :23:05. | :23:10.
these dogs are the real thing. They are fed on raw meat and they are | :23:10. | :23:16.
born to work and to run. While these dogs are family pets, they | :23:16. | :23:23.
also need to race. I love it. By good training twice a week as a | :23:23. | :23:27.
minimum. I usually raise them once a week. It is almost a full-time | :23:27. | :23:37.
:23:37. | :23:38. | ||
commitment. These huskies specialises in insurance. Siberian | :23:38. | :23:43.
huskies are small and leaner and faster sprinters. Some have | :23:43. | :23:49.
different types, Canadian Eskimo dogs are very rare and endangered | :23:49. | :23:55.
breed. It is something that can take over your life. I'm afraid | :23:55. | :23:59.
that this has been something very important for me. It is very | :23:59. | :24:05.
rewarding. The weekend racing course is set around mallard's Pike | :24:05. | :24:14.
lake. As soon as you are off, the nerves are gone, but there is a lot | :24:14. | :24:23.
of raw power from the dogs. The bigger teams will be hitting about | :24:23. | :24:28.
30 miles an hour. It is clear that the dogs are far more excited than | :24:28. | :24:33.
the owners, it will be a very noisy weekend. | :24:33. | :24:43.
:24:43. | :24:46. | ||
This is a typical set-up, align of dogs attract -- attached to this | :24:46. | :24:51.
week. You can have up to eight dogs in a team and that is when things | :24:51. | :24:56.
start to get really fast. This is the last of the season in | :24:56. | :25:01.
Gloucestershire, it ends in March. That is when the temperature gets | :25:01. | :25:11.
too high for these dogs. If you went to go that event it is | :25:11. | :25:15.
free until Sunday, but organisers say do not bring your pet dogs or | :25:15. | :25:25.
:25:25. | :25:28. | ||
cats along. It was a day whether cloud won out | :25:28. | :25:35.
against the sunshine. The Gloucestershire fared very well. | :25:35. | :25:41.
The rest of us had a lot of stubborn, low cloud today. | :25:41. | :25:46.
Temperatures cluttered up pretty early. It is a rather misty and | :25:46. | :25:52.
murky story this evening and tonight. The weekend is not too bad. | :25:52. | :25:56.
It will still be mild for this time of the year. We will see some | :25:56. | :26:03.
sunshine. The cold front is sinking down and bringing fresher air. | :26:03. | :26:08.
There will be patchy light rain and drizzle. Behind that tomorrow we do | :26:08. | :26:15.
get some Clearing skies. The latter part of the day will have sunshine, | :26:15. | :26:23.
to. Overnight lows will be down on recent values, rural spots will be | :26:23. | :26:28.
even chillier. Tomorrow morning it does not look particularly pretty, | :26:28. | :26:35.
low cloud and mist and murk. By the second half of the day, decent | :26:35. | :26:43.
amounts of sunshine. That will help propel the highs into double | :26:43. | :26:50.
figures. After that, tomorrow night again we are looking at cloud | :26:50. | :26:56.
filling in the holes. Misty and murky and again the Bristol Channel | :26:56. | :27:01.
will bear the brunt of the coastal fog. There will be hill fog around | :27:01. | :27:07.
as well. There will be a repeat performance on Sunday. And grey and | :27:07. | :27:12. |
