Korean ferry capsized. That's all | :00:00. | :00:00.
but they were tonnes down after a two`hour debate today. `` turned | :00:00. | :14:00.
down. A man who collapsed with a heart | :14:01. | :14:03.
attack while playing squash in Cheltenham has been saved by | :14:04. | :14:06.
lifeguards who had just finished a first aid lesson in a room next | :14:07. | :14:10.
door. At first, they thought it was a surprise exercise set up as part | :14:11. | :14:13.
of their training, until they realised it really was a life or | :14:14. | :14:16.
death situation. Scott Ellis reports. It was Friday night at the | :14:17. | :14:19.
sports centre in Cheltenham and 42`year`old man was squash on this | :14:20. | :14:21.
court. He collapsed. Fortunately, his life`savers will not backfire | :14:22. | :14:24.
away. They were learning first aid in the room next door. Natalie | :14:25. | :14:30.
Schofield, Jo Whiley and the rest of the class thought it was a drill. He | :14:31. | :14:37.
said, is there are first aid about? We all stood up and looked at each | :14:38. | :14:42.
other and fought it was set up. It was the way he ran in and be thought | :14:43. | :14:47.
we were being tested. And the reality was there was a man down | :14:48. | :14:53.
there. What did he look like? He had collapsed and was going quite blue | :14:54. | :14:56.
and purple. That is when it hit home it was not a drill. This man was the | :14:57. | :15:03.
first aid teacher that day. He delegated tasks to each of the | :15:04. | :15:07.
lifeguards, including chest compressions and a life`saving | :15:08. | :15:13.
electric shock from a defibrillator. It was one of the most surreal | :15:14. | :15:17.
things I have ever seen. He was on the floor and he jolted like nothing | :15:18. | :15:22.
I have ever seen in my life. It was awful. But he started breathing | :15:23. | :15:26.
again. Towards the end, will he made a joke about how we ripped his tee | :15:27. | :15:32.
shot. George is full of praise for the young lifeguards but says it was | :15:33. | :15:38.
lucky they were the local `` that they were there at all. Two more | :15:39. | :15:43.
minutes and they would have been at home. It was amazingly bubbly and | :15:44. | :15:47.
could make the difference. `` it was amazing that the welfare. This video | :15:48. | :15:54.
from Vinnie Jones shows what you need to do to save a life. To have | :15:55. | :15:58.
done it for real, though, is the moment that these teenage lifeguards | :15:59. | :16:05.
will not forget. Amazing. You feel good that you have saved someone. | :16:06. | :16:11.
Happy. Just glad he's OK. The 42`year`old man is recovering in | :16:12. | :16:14.
hospital and his wife has thanked everyone who has helped to save her | :16:15. | :16:19.
husband's life. That is phenomenal. Absolutely | :16:20. | :16:21.
amazing. At this time of year, Malta is an | :16:22. | :16:25.
important stopover point for wild birds migrating to Europe to breed, | :16:26. | :16:28.
some of which will come here. One of the many hazards the birds face on | :16:29. | :16:32.
their journey is human. For three weeks, hunters with shotguns look to | :16:33. | :16:36.
shoot as many of the birds as possible. TV naturalist Chris | :16:37. | :16:42.
Packham and a team from Bristol are heading to Malta to raise awareness | :16:43. | :16:45.
of this practice. And Chris joins us now. | :16:46. | :16:50.
Chris, thank you for joining us. Can you give us an idea of the scale of | :16:51. | :16:57.
this problem? Well, the problem is that they are shooting in | :16:58. | :17:00.
springtime. The birds that are the turning over Malta to northern | :17:01. | :17:05.
Europe, and some species, two homes in the UK, things like turtledove, | :17:06. | :17:10.
quail, cuckoo, some warblers, swifts and swallows, are the adult | :17:11. | :17:16.
surviving birds set to beat this season. They are the most important | :17:17. | :17:22.
part of these birds' populations. If you shoot them at this time of year, | :17:23. | :17:25.
they do not bleed and there will be fewer words. These are some of the | :17:26. | :17:31.
species which are in critical decline. Things like couple dance, | :17:32. | :17:35.
since 1970, they have declined by 95%. `` turtledoves. The fact that | :17:36. | :17:43.
they are legally blown out of the sky is horrendous to those of us who | :17:44. | :17:46.
try to conserve these birds. `` illegally. What is the legal | :17:47. | :17:52.
precedence? Are you going to try and change their mind? What kind of | :17:53. | :17:58.
practice is this? The situation is that we have the European wild birds | :17:59. | :18:03.
directive. All of the countries that have signed up to the EU should pay | :18:04. | :18:08.
respect to this. This states that there should be no spring hunting at | :18:09. | :18:14.
all. Malta kind of gives itself what they call a delegation, an exemption | :18:15. | :18:23.
of this. The The Legalizer spring `` they believe it is legal to organise | :18:24. | :18:27.
a spring hunt in Malta. It is legal for them and not for Europe. The | :18:28. | :18:31.
vast majority of the Maltese people, 65%, are strictly against spring | :18:32. | :18:37.
hunting and oppose it on several accounts. Firstly, they do not like | :18:38. | :18:42.
the fact that the cannot take themselves and their family into the | :18:43. | :18:45.
countryside in springtime. Secondly, they do not like their lack of | :18:46. | :18:49.
democracy because they did not see why the Government is lobbied by | :18:50. | :18:53.
their shooting fraternity. And they are embarrassed that this is an | :18:54. | :18:58.
outdated practice which is not aligned with conservation across | :18:59. | :19:02.
Europe. I am going out they are not to be a finger wagging and it, `` | :19:03. | :19:08.
finger wagging but it. To support the vast majority of people who are | :19:09. | :19:15.
against this. And you will be composing a video diary, won't you? | :19:16. | :19:21.
Yes, it is a feisty affair. I am going with three other colleagues | :19:22. | :19:24.
from Bristol, one of whom works from yourself. `` works for yourself. It | :19:25. | :19:33.
is self`funded. Many people come from across Europe to monitor this | :19:34. | :19:38.
so that we can appeal to the European Commission for them to do | :19:39. | :19:42.
something about it. We will go out, see what the hunters are up to, and | :19:43. | :19:46.
create a wider awareness, we hope, by using YouTube for the British | :19:47. | :19:54.
public. This has been off the radar. Broadcasters have not touched this | :19:55. | :19:57.
for a couple of years and we want to bring that back into the sphere of | :19:58. | :20:01.
public interest. Thank you very much. The people who will carry | :20:02. | :20:11.
their bat across Bristol is announced today. It will be taken | :20:12. | :20:15.
through 71 countries on its route. The batting will have covered more | :20:16. | :20:19.
than 100,000 miles before it arrives in the West on the 3rd of June. The | :20:20. | :20:26.
people involved have been chosen for their work in the community. | :20:27. | :20:35.
Remember this? Almost two years ago, the Olympic Torch reached Bristol on | :20:36. | :20:39.
its journey to London. Soon it will be the turn of the Queen's | :20:40. | :20:41.
Commonwealth baton, after visiting each of the 71 countries and | :20:42. | :20:44.
territories competing at this summer's games. It's in the | :20:45. | :20:47.
Caribbean at the moment, but who needs the Cayman Islands when you've | :20:48. | :20:50.
got the Cumberland Basin looking like this. Today was a rehearsal. | :20:51. | :20:53.
This boat will take the baton`bearers along the harbour | :20:54. | :20:56.
side, hopefully in front of a few more spectators. They have been | :20:57. | :20:59.
chosen because of their work in the community. But with all the | :21:00. | :21:02.
excitement and expectation, it's funny what some people worry about. | :21:03. | :21:08.
I can imagine is being here, but it is the rain. I am skilled of the | :21:09. | :21:11.
rain. I would like it to be just like this. `` I am scared. From | :21:12. | :21:15.
Tracie, the baton is passed to two of the city's young politicians. I | :21:16. | :21:20.
feel very privileged because this is our opportunity for Bristol to show | :21:21. | :21:23.
the rest of the country what we are all about. I am a little bit | :21:24. | :21:29.
nervous. The Mayor nominated me and we have got to live up to that. We | :21:30. | :21:34.
have to live up to other young people. Getting the baton through | :21:35. | :21:37.
Bristol might be a gruelling task, but fear not, there's an athlete on | :21:38. | :21:41.
board for the final leg. I am looking forward to it. Not as | :21:42. | :21:46.
nervous as what you might expect. It will be a great opportunity and | :21:47. | :21:53.
relieved looking forward to it. `` I am really looking forward to it. | :21:54. | :21:56.
From water to dry land, the baton will arrive at the Lloyds | :21:57. | :21:58.
Amphitheatre. This will be a complete mix of sporting activities. | :21:59. | :22:02.
We have 20 national governing bodies to support, all coming down here. It | :22:03. | :22:08.
will give people a chance to try it. Then, via College Green and City | :22:09. | :22:11.
Hall, it ends up at Millennium Square. The success of the Olympic | :22:12. | :22:18.
Torch relay paved the way for Bristol to do that much better. We | :22:19. | :22:23.
have been able to sell a city to other sports. We have attracted the | :22:24. | :22:26.
Rugby league World Cup. Since then, we have signed a contract for the | :22:27. | :22:32.
tour of Britain. We are very hopeful that we will be able to bring more | :22:33. | :22:36.
sports to the city in the future. So with Bristol on the map and in the | :22:37. | :22:39.
limelight again, here is Bristol's Commonwealth Games baton relay. | :22:40. | :22:48.
Just don't drop it. They must have been nervous. One of the favourites | :22:49. | :22:59.
for the Commonwealth gold medal is Bath`based swimmer Michael Jamieson. | :23:00. | :23:01.
This afternoon it's been confirmed that he will race for Scotland in | :23:02. | :23:05.
the 100m and 200m breaststroke in his home city. In the last few days, | :23:06. | :23:09.
Michael has set the fastest time in the world in the longer distance. | :23:10. | :23:12.
Looking forward to Glasgow, it is the biggest event of my career. It | :23:13. | :23:18.
is a huge opportunity. As I say, I am doing everything I can to get the | :23:19. | :23:21.
result I am looking for. I am confident about it and I just need | :23:22. | :23:26.
to make sure I stay focused and keep putting the working over the next | :23:27. | :23:31.
couple of months. Our cricket sides have finished their first County | :23:32. | :23:34.
Championship matches of the CDs. In Taunton, the match with Yorkshire | :23:35. | :23:39.
ended in a draw after almost 1200 runs were scored. Gloucestershire | :23:40. | :23:45.
got off to the worst possible start in Division Two and lost by eight | :23:46. | :23:53.
wickets to Hampshire in Bristol. Gloucester Rugby Club has today | :23:54. | :23:56.
confirmed it's looking into the behaviour of a small number of fans | :23:57. | :23:59.
for "foul and abusive language" towards the match officials in | :24:00. | :24:01.
Saturday's defeat to Bath. Meanwhile, prop forward Sila Puafisi | :24:02. | :24:04.
and scrum half Tavis Knoyle will both appear before an RFU | :24:05. | :24:07.
disciplinary panel tonight after getting sent off in the same match. | :24:08. | :24:15.
A car which became submerged on the Somerset Levels during the floods | :24:16. | :24:18.
has been scrapped, despite attracting a bid of more than | :24:19. | :24:22.
?100,000 online. You may remember seeing this picture of the car | :24:23. | :24:29.
abandoned on the road to Muchelney. Its owner decided to sell it on eBay | :24:30. | :24:33.
to raise money for flood victims and despite receiving a winning bid of | :24:34. | :24:37.
?101,000, it turned out to be a hoax and so the car's now been scrapped. | :24:38. | :24:48.
That is a shame. Thankfully, it has kept Sony. Hopefully, it will stay | :24:49. | :24:55.
that way. What you reckon? There is a reasonable chance this evening and | :24:56. | :24:59.
into tomorrow, Friday and all of Saturday. It ain't going to be like | :25:00. | :25:03.
that once we get to that particular day where we have shifted is Asian. | :25:04. | :25:11.
`` shifted position. Tomorrow, they will continue under dry conditions. | :25:12. | :25:14.
The key difference compared to today will be moored in the way of cloud, | :25:15. | :25:18.
generally speaking. Still some brighter spells. The best of the | :25:19. | :25:22.
sunshine will be squeezed into the first part of the day. This is how | :25:23. | :25:23.
things are first part of the day. This is how | :25:24. | :25:28.
shaping up. A familiar story with high pressure dominating the | :25:29. | :25:33.
picture. At the same time, we have from the north`west. They'll | :25:34. | :25:37.
introduced more cloud tomorrow. They will not introduce anything in the | :25:38. | :25:41.
way of rainfall. There will be more sunshine again for Friday. There has | :25:42. | :25:47.
been a temporary hiatus in the otherwise sunny story. There has | :25:48. | :25:51.
been glorious sunshine this evening, and once again things are starting | :25:52. | :25:59.
to chill off very quickly. It will not necessarily be as cold as a last | :26:00. | :26:04.
couple of nights. The minimum we will see will be around about 3`4 | :26:05. | :26:11.
Celsius. Tomorrow morning. Start with sunshine around. `` tomorrow | :26:12. | :26:18.
morning. Start. They will be increasing amounts of cloud towards | :26:19. | :26:22.
the south`east, Dorset, Wiltshire, other places. Here you will benefit | :26:23. | :26:28.
from longer spells sunshine remaining until the afternoon period | :26:29. | :26:31.
and consequently, here you will have highest temperatures. You might find | :26:32. | :26:37.
your up to 16, 17 Celsius in places like Salisbury, Dorset, when it is | :26:38. | :26:42.
very pleasantly warm indeed. Further northwards, they will be bright | :26:43. | :26:51.
spells. More like 15`16dC and still a decent day, cloud cover or not. | :26:52. | :26:57.
Into Friday, yes, cloud around, but generally speaking a good will of | :26:58. | :27:02.
sunshine once again. As will be the case for Saturday. They will be the | :27:03. | :27:05.
two best is for the bank all day weekend. By Sunday, showery rain | :27:06. | :27:10.
pushing in across the south and south`east. The generation and | :27:11. | :27:14.
locations of which are still yet to be pinned down. `` the locations of | :27:15. | :27:23.
which. Of course, there will be more inclement days. | :27:24. | :27:29.
Do you think the seated forecast will catch on? You look so relaxed. | :27:30. | :27:34.
He needs a shed and those handkerchief hats. I am sure he has | :27:35. | :27:39.
got those. I am back later. Yes, with Ian, | :27:40. | :27:42.
hopefully. Goodbye for now. | :27:43. | :27:48. |
