Good evening. A motoring organisation is

criticising the council in Bath after it generated a quarter of a

million pounds in fines in ` single month. The controversy is over the

so`called "bus gate" which bans cars from the road in front of the bus

station during the day. Ali Vowles reports.

Who would have thought that such a short stretch of road from the bus

station to the train station could cause motorists so many problems?

Everything except buses and taxis are banned from 10`6 one wax. All

these cars going up through the lights today will be issued with a

hefty fine. So let me give xou at a few facts and figures. The council

says that in that four`week period, 9,000 vehicles have gone down

Dorchester Street through the bus gate and broken the rules. Now, that

has generated an income of ?250 000. If they do not pay within 14 days,

it could be even more. That equates to around one vehicle breakhng the

rules every 3`4 minutes. But many locals and tourists say there just

isn't enough warning. Part of the confusion seems to have

arisen from the signage. Th`t is the first time you see you're not

allowed to go down the bus gate area. But as you approach it,

there's a rather confusing sign here. If you're a tourist to Bath,

for all intents and purposes, it looks as if you can go left to

Southgate and the train station meaning you break the law. Ht is not

clear until you are too latd. The signs are very small and by the time

you... Well, I think most pdople would not even have noticed they had

done it. And they would think, well, why have I been caught? I lhve in

the middle of Bath and they did not let us know that you could not drive

down there. Is that what yot mean? No, I didn't know. Chaotic, really.

Very confusing. The whole scheme is experimdntal,

and for the first two months, those breaking the rules were issted with

a warning letter but no find. Now the softly`softly approach hs over.

People are getting letters `nd they say, we're not being fined by the

council, therefore, it's all right, we can carry on going through there.

So how do we get the right results? We will know what the proper result

is from our trial period. The council believes it has given

enough warning, but there are many who disagree.

This signage is having no ilpact. You can tell that because of the

number of penalty tickets that have been issued. Motorists are not just

awkward. They do not set out in the morning to try to get a ?60 penalty

ticket. Quite the reverse. H think the majority of motorists try to

obey the Highway Code, but hn this case, they really cannot sed what

they are supposed to be doing. Extra signs will be going up in the

next few weeks and a decision may be taken in June. Until then, ht seems

the problem will go on and on and on.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault at a care home in

Gloucester. Detectives say the 31`year`old has been bailed to

attend Gloucester police st`tion in August pending further enquhries.

The Care Quality Commission has confirmed it's looking into the

allegations. One man has been jailed and handed a

six`year football banning order following violence at the Bristol

City versus Bristol Rovers derby. A further four men were also given

football banning orders and suspended jail terms. The trouble

took place before, during and after the Johnstone's Paint Trophx clash

at Ashton Gate last Septembdr. Royalty came face to face whth its

treacherous ancestry in Somdrset today. The Duke of Gloucestdr

visited the county museum's Monmouth Rebellion room, which is devoted to

an attempt to overthrow the monarchy 300 years ago. Clinton Rogers has

Somerset was the seat of thd Duke of Monmouth's rebellion during his

attempts to overthrow King James II. This museum display tells of the

bloody battle of Sedgemoor. Monmouth's rebels were defe`ted and

300 were later sentenced to death. And, as it turns out, the Dtke of

Gloucester and Monmouth are distant relatives.

A slightly uneasy place to be, Your Royal Highness? Well, not rdally! I

think he has probably got used to the fact that he has got ancestry

that leads in two rather different directions and I think he is

genuinely interested in his more rebellious ancestors as well.

Earlier, the Duke did what he had come to do ` officially open Castle

House in Taunton, described as one of the finest medieval buildings in

the West and restored at a cost of ?1 million by the Somerset Buildings

Preservation Trust. Nationally, it is important, because

it is probably where Judge Jeffreys actually stayed during the dvents.

So that makes it nationally important. As a piece of

architecture, it is a Grade I building, so it is nationally very

important. That is the top tier of buildings in the country. This is

what Castle House looked like two years ago ` a landmark propdrty but

so run down it was on the English Heritage at`risk register. Restoring

it cost ?1 million, much of that money coming from the National

Lottery Heritage Fund. And now, if it takes your fancy, you can

actually book accommodation here. You can even sit in the rool where

it is said Judge Jeffreys stayed while sentencing Monmouth's rebels

to hang. It has been quite ` day today for a royal with rebellious

blood. One of the biggest shocks in the

The latest work by street artist Banksy has attracted around 3,0 0

people a day to Bristol's Chty Museum over the bank holidax

weekend. Mobile Lovers first appeared in a doorway in Cldment

Street before it was taken `way by the leader of a nearby youth

project. He claimed it was ` gift to his club. It's staying at the museum

until the ownership dispute can be resolved.
