News at 6.00pm. For this evening, it's goodbye are from me, on | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and David Garmston. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Our main story tonight: The eye operations that went wrong. | :00:08. | :00:09.
Surgery is suspended in Taunton after thirty patients report blurred | :00:10. | :00:13.
vision following cataract procedures. | :00:14. | :00:22.
There is a potential that a small number will need further surgery. | :00:23. | :00:25.
That is regrettable. Our other headlines tonight: | :00:26. | :00:31.
Dredging on the Somerset Levels Farmers complain | :00:32. | :00:34.
after the work falls behind. We are so sorry. | :00:35. | :00:38.
Bristol rugby players apologise to fans for a crushing defeat | :00:39. | :00:40.
in the play`offs. And I am here with the antipues road | :00:41. | :00:53.
show to see what happens behind the scenes. | :00:54. | :00:57.
Fifteen patients of Musgrove Hospital have had | :00:58. | :01:00.
significant problems after having eye surgery at mobile unit there. | :01:01. | :01:03.
Vanguard Healthcare, the specialist eye`care company that | :01:04. | :01:07.
carried out the operations has had its contract cancelled. | :01:08. | :01:20.
An investigation has now bedn launched. | :01:21. | :01:23.
One in three of us will devdlop cataracts in our eyes in later life. | :01:24. | :01:28.
It occurs when the lens becomes cloudy overtime and if left | :01:29. | :01:31.
Imagine if you step out the shower and you try to look in the lirror | :01:32. | :01:42.
and it is steamed up. After developing cataracts, | :01:43. | :01:45.
Malcom had the relatively shmple operation to replace | :01:46. | :01:47.
the cloudy lenses in his eyds. It was quite frightening. I did not | :01:48. | :02:02.
know how much my site was deteriorating until it was gone | :02:03. | :02:05.
But the waiting list for thhs surgery at Musgrove Park Hospital | :02:06. | :02:12.
So in May, the hospital took the decision to bring | :02:13. | :02:16.
in a specialist eye`care colpany to set up a mobile surgery to carry | :02:17. | :02:19.
But after just a few weeks there were problems | :02:20. | :02:33.
About 15 patients had a problem We have seen all of them now. They will | :02:34. | :02:40.
continue to be followed up by our staff to make sure that we look | :02:41. | :02:45.
after them properly. We are very sorry that this has happened. | :02:46. | :02:47.
Those fifteen patients could be looking at further surgery | :02:48. | :02:50.
The company say they are helping with the investigation to fhnd out | :02:51. | :03:04.
what has gone wrong. They expect to have some answers | :03:05. | :03:06.
in the next few weeks but, with the mobile clinic closed, it looks like | :03:07. | :03:10.
the waiting time for those needing Tracey Miller, BBC Points Wdst, | :03:11. | :03:13.
Taunton. Well the difficulties experhenced | :03:14. | :03:17.
by the eye patients has meant Vanguard's contract | :03:18. | :03:19.
for 400 operations being terminated Cataract operations are routine | :03:20. | :03:21.
across the country Well, earlier I spoke to BBC | :03:22. | :03:25.
Health Reporter, Smitha Mundasad. This is a routine operation | :03:26. | :03:35.
how unusual is it to have It is a very common operation. In | :03:36. | :03:51.
terms of serious complications, one in 100 ten to get them. It hs a safe | :03:52. | :03:53.
operation for most people whll What about this number | :03:54. | :04:00.
of patients reporting probldms stop the usual rates are ond in a | :04:01. | :04:12.
hundred, so this case is cldarly different. | :04:13. | :04:13.
Is it normal to contract out surgery like this? | :04:14. | :04:16.
In the last decade, the NHS has contacted out more surgery to | :04:17. | :04:28.
private firms. This tends to be surgery where there are long waiting | :04:29. | :04:33.
times. It doesn't happen only with this kind of surgery, but things | :04:34. | :04:39.
like head operations to. It has been controversial, but at the end of the | :04:40. | :04:43.
day the private companies h`ve two abide to NHS standards. | :04:44. | :04:47.
What should people do if thdy are concerned about their operation | :04:48. | :04:51.
The trust said that they have contacted everyone who is involved. | :04:52. | :04:57.
Most people should not have any concerns. If they do, they should go | :04:58. | :05:05.
back to the hospital and thdir GP. There are many private firms that | :05:06. | :05:06.
carry out this kind of surgdry. The Environment Secretary f`ced | :05:07. | :05:13.
questions today over the spded Owen Paterson was at the Roxal Bath | :05:14. | :05:16.
and West Show, where he met campaigners who said | :05:17. | :05:20.
just 5% of the targeted are` had Scott Ellis has spent the d`y | :05:21. | :05:23.
at the show and sent this rdport. It was much busier today. The | :05:24. | :05:42.
weather was OK. Those who wdre exhibiting worse here first and up | :05:43. | :05:46.
very early. There is concern among local farmers about the ratd at | :05:47. | :05:53.
which the dredging operation is taking place. They have worked out | :05:54. | :06:00.
that only 10% of the area h`s been dredged in the first two months If | :06:01. | :06:07.
they continue at that speed, only one third will be done by the | :06:08. | :06:11.
winter. As things stand thex will not finish the job. They will be | :06:12. | :06:15.
nowhere near finishing the job will stop we need the job 100% fhnished. | :06:16. | :06:22.
We have to get it right. If they are on schedule, they can show ts the | :06:23. | :06:28.
evidence and then people will believe them. We have put some of | :06:29. | :06:34.
the concerns about dredging to the secretary of state for the | :06:35. | :06:41.
environment. What reassurances can you give to local people and | :06:42. | :06:47.
farmers? I have come here to talk to the local farmers and | :06:48. | :06:55.
representatives. The environmental agency is sure that they will manage | :06:56. | :07:01.
to do it in time. Is there `ny more money on the table? I am optimistic | :07:02. | :07:13.
that we will be be bringing this project to completion. But there is | :07:14. | :07:20.
no extra money? I am under pressure from across the United Kingdom for | :07:21. | :07:25.
different schemes. Let us sde what the scheme looks like. I thhnk there | :07:26. | :07:32.
could be significant benefits. What about the badger cull? Does it allow | :07:33. | :07:44.
you that they seem to be people `` there seem to be people colluding | :07:45. | :07:51.
with the police. I'm very h`ppy I would like to pay tribute to the | :07:52. | :07:55.
people working in the local company who were working with the police. I | :07:56. | :08:00.
am delighted that they coopdrated so well will stop this is an operation | :08:01. | :08:07.
that involves men with fire`rms in the dark and we need to be careful | :08:08. | :08:12.
to stop we need to make surd that care is taken to stop I am glad that | :08:13. | :08:18.
there was good coverage by the police of the operation. A large | :08:19. | :08:25.
part of this show is showing off your farm animals. It is a skill to | :08:26. | :08:32.
guide these animals around the arena. I have been learning about it | :08:33. | :08:39.
from a pig farmer who has the oldest pig herd in the country. Talworth | :08:40. | :08:50.
pigs being put through their paces. In charge of these pics is | :08:51. | :09:04.
Caroline. Fix`mac takes. Thd spec is for encouraging. The board hs for | :09:05. | :09:15.
turning them. She has won hdre before. Tamworth is home to the | :09:16. | :09:27.
oldest pigs in the country. This pig was born in 1992 and this is her | :09:28. | :09:36.
family tree. There are nearly 1 0 years of reading details here. The | :09:37. | :09:44.
hard keeps going because of reading. In the 1970s there were not | :09:45. | :10:01.
many left. If she has six b`bies over a number of years therd will be | :10:02. | :10:09.
many more. You can taste thd difference in this meet. Thd flavour | :10:10. | :10:17.
is completely different. Yot put your money where your mouth is. If | :10:18. | :10:22.
you want to eat Tamworth bacon you have to pay for it. Tasty. The | :10:23. | :10:34.
Tamworth pigs will forage all day and eat almost anything. Here is | :10:35. | :10:43.
something else that might tdmpt you. This is the largest cider | :10:44. | :10:51.
competition in the world. This man just one. Bob Chapman. He works at | :10:52. | :11:04.
the cider mill. Your cider hs the best in the world. Congratulations. | :11:05. | :11:10.
What is your secret? The selection of the apples. I mixed the type of | :11:11. | :11:19.
apples that I use. I these local apples? Yes they are. I now would | :11:20. | :11:32.
like to taste the cider, but the judges have drank it all. | :11:33. | :11:42.
Lots more still to come on the programme tonight including: | :11:43. | :11:46.
From a blank sheet of paper to competing around the world. | :11:47. | :11:49.
The students from Bath who have built a racing car. | :11:50. | :12:00.
And the weather has been unsettled, but it looks like we have some nice | :12:01. | :12:06.
days on the way. Join me soon to find out. | :12:07. | :12:11.
The only case against a badger`cull protestor accused of breachhng | :12:12. | :12:15.
The injunction was brought by the National Farmers Union to keep | :12:16. | :12:20.
the public away from the cull areas in Somerset and Gloucestershire | :12:21. | :12:23.
Cathy Scott, from Coventry, was accused of running into a field | :12:24. | :12:26.
It is not yet clear why the Crown Prosecution Service h`s | :12:27. | :12:32.
Bath`based publisher Future has confirmed plans to cut | :12:33. | :12:37.
The figure has emerged as p`rt of the company's interim financial | :12:38. | :12:42.
The news follows the start of a transformation programle and | :12:43. | :12:48.
Future says they are restructuring under a new leadership team. | :12:49. | :12:51.
They have also announced thd sale of their sport and craft titles | :12:52. | :12:56.
An ambulance service, criticised for poor perform`nce | :12:57. | :12:59.
in rural Gloucestershire, is to spend ?700,000 on more vehicles | :13:00. | :13:03.
Figures last month showed fdwer than half of 999 response vehiclds | :13:04. | :13:08.
in the Cotswold area reached their destination within | :13:09. | :13:10.
The Trust is now buying an extra ambulance | :13:11. | :13:15.
Students at the University of Bath have been showing off a rachng car | :13:16. | :13:23.
They started with a blank sheet of paper and found sponsors | :13:24. | :13:28.
Now they are preparing to compete against other universities | :13:29. | :13:32.
Who would have ever thought an engineering degree | :13:33. | :13:40.
This car will compete against 500 others this sumler. | :13:41. | :13:47.
The last few days have been incredibly exciting. | :13:48. | :13:49.
Seeing our car come together, seeing it come off the comptter | :13:50. | :13:52.
The fruition of fifteen months of work. | :13:53. | :13:56.
We are basically building a racing car with our mates, with a | :13:57. | :13:59.
Nought to sixty in three seconds ` no problem! | :14:00. | :14:04.
And here to have a look, and believe me he did, | :14:05. | :14:07.
is one of the most successftl engineers in the world, Ron Dennis. | :14:08. | :14:12.
After joining McLaren in thd 19 0s, he masterminded Formula One | :14:13. | :14:20.
Championships for Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Lewis Hamilton | :14:21. | :14:26.
What would they have made, H wonder, of the Team Bath racing cre`tion? | :14:27. | :14:32.
They would have a very positive smile on their faces, because | :14:33. | :14:35.
Any great Grand Prix drivers, and certainly nearly all thd world | :14:36. | :14:42.
champions, have come through karting and formula such as this. | :14:43. | :14:47.
Of course, their smile would be linked to them reminiscing `bout | :14:48. | :14:51.
This is a great start`up project ` not just for the drivers, btt for | :14:52. | :14:58.
all the engineers who participate and who will possibly participate | :14:59. | :15:01.
Fourteen of these aspiring Rons have already spent time with Forlula One | :15:02. | :15:08.
teams as part of their course, but there is nothing like | :15:09. | :15:11.
The majority of the team have had at least six hours sleep | :15:12. | :15:19.
It is going to continue unthl July, when we race at Silverstone. | :15:20. | :15:27.
Then it will carry on when we race in Germany and Austria. | :15:28. | :15:30.
Our target is top three in all the events. | :15:31. | :15:33.
The podium is possible, as long as they sort out that back dnd. | :15:34. | :15:36.
I think you need to beef those up a bit. | :15:37. | :15:39.
Sarah`Jane Bungay, BBC Points West, Bath. | :15:40. | :15:45.
Bristol are facing up to another season of championship rugbx, | :15:46. | :15:48.
unless they can produce a m`ssive comeback in their playoff fhnal | :15:49. | :15:52.
They were beaten 27`8 by London Welsh in last night's away leg. | :15:53. | :15:57.
The players have apologised to the 2,000 Bristol fans who lade | :15:58. | :16:01.
the trip, but have insisted they can turn the tie around | :16:02. | :16:04.
After two failed playoff attempts in the last four seasons, | :16:05. | :16:15.
I have been nervous all day and I am getting worse now ` | :16:16. | :16:22.
We are definitely going to go up this year, | :16:23. | :16:26.
With huge investment in the squad, and having finished top | :16:27. | :16:32.
of the table, they were understandably favourites. | :16:33. | :16:34.
The big question ` could they handle that tag? | :16:35. | :16:38.
Bristol's Marco Mama scored first in testing conditions, | :16:39. | :16:44.
The next seventy minutes were dominated by London Welsh, | :16:45. | :16:49.
Bristol's miserable night compounded by the loss of star`signing Ryan | :16:50. | :16:56.
The bad news kept coming, as did the points for the home sidd. | :16:57. | :17:04.
They were 22 in front going into the final minutes. | :17:05. | :17:09.
A last gasp Adrian Jarvis pdnalty giving Bristol just a glimmdr | :17:10. | :17:12.
The Welsh have completely ottplayed us and they deserve the restlt. | :17:13. | :17:20.
For us to lose by only 19 points, it could have been much mord. | :17:21. | :17:25.
We have another game to go and we need to play very well next | :17:26. | :17:28.
If there is any side that c`n do it, we can. | :17:29. | :17:33.
We have done it before this season and overturned deficits likd that. | :17:34. | :17:36.
We have had times when we h`ve been 19 points up in the first h`lf. | :17:37. | :17:40.
If there is any side that c`n do it, we can. | :17:41. | :17:43.
We're going to have to draw on everything. | :17:44. | :17:45.
We are very tight knit side, we will need to pull togethdr. | :17:46. | :17:48.
We are going to have to make it happen on the day. | :17:49. | :17:52.
A big build`up and nothing there, really. | :17:53. | :17:57.
I would love to think that we could get back in it but... | :17:58. | :18:00.
We have to go for it against the best defence in the league. | :18:01. | :18:04.
The only consolation for Brhstol is that it is only half timd. | :18:05. | :18:09.
But they will need a twenty`point winning margin next week if they | :18:10. | :18:13.
That second leg will be plaxed in front of a sell`out crowd | :18:14. | :18:18.
We can only hope and pray that their side find some | :18:19. | :18:22.
Alistair Durden, BBC Points West, Oxford. | :18:23. | :18:31.
Staff at a wildlife rescue centre have had their hands full this month | :18:32. | :18:35.
The RSPCA in West Hatch say they are now looking after thirty`ond young | :18:36. | :18:40.
tawny owls ` five times as lany as they had this time last xear | :18:41. | :18:44.
Andrew Plant has been along to find out why. | :18:45. | :18:49.
We are just going to check on the owls now. | :18:50. | :18:52.
This is just one of several bird houses here that is filling up fast. | :18:53. | :18:56.
Just going to stick my head around the corner | :18:57. | :19:00.
The supervisor is taking it slowly because they are frightened | :19:01. | :19:05.
of people and we do not want to ruffle any feathers. | :19:06. | :19:11.
These juvenile tawny owls h`ve all been brought in by members | :19:12. | :19:16.
There are seven young ones hn here, another twenty`four elsewhere. | :19:17. | :19:20.
This time last year they had just six. | :19:21. | :19:23.
It is leaving staff here wondering just what is causing this boom | :19:24. | :19:27.
We had over a period of around twenty`eight days, | :19:28. | :19:33.
We did have some high winds, in April and stuff. | :19:34. | :19:46.
It could have been that somd of them were blown out | :19:47. | :19:50.
of trees sooner than they normally would be and so found more. | :19:51. | :19:55.
They are usually found underneath a tree from which they have fallen. | :19:56. | :19:58.
But there long claws mean they are expert climbers and often, | :19:59. | :20:02.
if left alone, they will find their way back to the nest. | :20:03. | :20:06.
You can see how easily they are hanging on here and they don't | :20:07. | :20:10.
They are common across the TK and Europe and blend in beattifully | :20:11. | :20:17.
It is still not entirely cldar why there are so many here this year, | :20:18. | :20:24.
As soon as they are ready, every single one will be put back | :20:25. | :20:31.
You can see more about the owls on the Facebook page and website. | :20:32. | :20:50.
The BBC's Antiques Roadshow has been in Bristol today, | :20:51. | :20:53.
casting expert opinion over the West's family heirlooms. | :20:54. | :20:55.
All the famous faces were there as Andy Howard found out. | :20:56. | :21:01.
This is the thirty`seventh series of the Antiques Roadshow, | :21:02. | :21:06.
But you do not want to hear from him, you want to hear from me. | :21:07. | :21:14.
As he said, it is the thirtx`seventh season of the Antiques Roadshow | :21:15. | :21:17.
Have a look behind`the`scends and see what goes on during the day | :21:18. | :21:21.
I'm afraid you are stuck with me, as Fiona was working today. | :21:22. | :21:30.
Mostly checking in household treasures at the front desk. | :21:31. | :21:34.
Hi there, thanks for braving the rain. | :21:35. | :21:36.
From there it is a tense waht for an expert. | :21:37. | :21:40.
I have got a Japanese, I thhnk, panel that has been made | :21:41. | :21:43.
into a fire screen that my grandfather got back frol his | :21:44. | :21:50.
And everything from antique teddies to teapots | :21:51. | :22:14.
Not every story or keepsake makes the final cut on the | :22:15. | :22:18.
Antiques Roadshow, only the exceptional, unusu`l, | :22:19. | :22:20.
But for Jo, the day was still a success. | :22:21. | :22:26.
Thousands came with their w`res in the hope of seeing | :22:27. | :22:36.
It would be a shame to come to the Antiques Roadshow and not have | :22:37. | :22:45.
It was the oldest thing I could find. | :22:46. | :22:51.
Let's see what the expert m`kes of it. | :22:52. | :22:53.
I do not think it is an anthque in the true sense | :22:54. | :23:06.
It is just going to be a few pounds really. | :23:07. | :23:11.
What about if we took the picture out of the framd? | :23:12. | :23:14.
I bought it for you. If there are collectors out there you can always | :23:15. | :23:51.
bid against me. It will be on the desk for some time. | :23:52. | :23:53.
Apparently one person who ttrned up to get a picture valued was | :23:54. | :23:56.
Denis Stynchcombe with the infamous Banksy Mobile Lovers. | :23:57. | :24:06.
And we overheard what the v`luation the art experts put on it... | :24:07. | :24:10.
That is pretty good. There hs an interview with Fiona on our Facebook | :24:11. | :24:29.
site. I was hoping that there would be | :24:30. | :24:50.
sunshine today. But the hot air has resulted in stormy weather. The day | :24:51. | :24:59.
was nice and the temperaturds were raised by the sunshine, but now | :25:00. | :25:07.
there is rain and weather w`rnings. Low`pressure is bringing thd showers | :25:08. | :25:17.
in. The flashing colours on the radar show where the heaviest rain | :25:18. | :25:25.
was all stop there is more to come. It will move away overnight and by | :25:26. | :25:31.
tomorrow there will be high`pressure and more settled days. We h`d decent | :25:32. | :25:44.
temperatures today. As we hdad towards Friday and Saturday the | :25:45. | :25:50.
weather will become drier and brighter. On Sunday, the wet and | :25:51. | :26:02.
great conditions will return. The weather warning is in force until | :26:03. | :26:17.
midnight will. Tomorrow, thdre will not be much rain. Temperatures, | :26:18. | :26:29.
18`19 Celsius. Temperatures more like we would expect for thhs time | :26:30. | :26:40.
of year. There will be a decent Saturday, much the same as Friday. | :26:41. | :26:53.
Dry and bright. But on Sund`y, it will be wet and cold. | :26:54. | :27:03.
Thank you. If anyone would like to buy this to practice starts you are | :27:04. | :27:14.
welcome. We will be back later. Goodbye. | :27:15. | :27:21. |
