Good evening. That's | :00:00. | :00:12.
Grieving families of some of the children who've died on Ward | :00:13. | :00:15.
32 in Bristol are claiming that the inquiry into their deaths does | :00:16. | :00:19.
The youngsters were being treated on the controversial ward at | :00:20. | :00:24.
Bristol Children's Hospital, which has received some serious criticism | :00:25. | :00:26.
Here's our health correspondent Matthew Hill. | :00:27. | :00:49.
Why was she sent up to Bristol hospital? And then she wasn't | :00:50. | :00:59.
operated on for two weeks. The operation was cancelled thrde times | :01:00. | :01:05.
within those two weeks. She had severe immune deficiency. They | :01:06. | :01:07.
didn't find that out until they operated on her. Jasmine 's death | :01:08. | :01:22.
won't be looked at pro. One of the family who do fall into the | :01:23. | :01:26.
timescale are the Turners from Warminster, who lost their son Sean | :01:27. | :01:33.
in 2012. A coroner ruled thdy lost opportunities in his care. Families | :01:34. | :01:41.
before 2010 will be excluded from the review. One of our strong | :01:42. | :01:46.
concerns is that they are only going to look at the clinical notds, as we | :01:47. | :01:52.
know from our case. A lot of these notes were missing. It just won t | :01:53. | :01:57.
work. There are test results within the results that we know didn't take | :01:58. | :02:01.
place. There are too many retrospective notes. Sean 's | :02:02. | :02:08.
critical period of notes is missing. It's turning into a farce rdally. | :02:09. | :02:13.
It's not just about the card of individual patients that thhs | :02:14. | :02:18.
enquiry will be looking at. Although the enquiry will only look back to | :02:19. | :02:22.
2010 in terms of the familids experience. It will be lookhng at | :02:23. | :02:27.
things like the original Brhstol enquiry, and how those things were | :02:28. | :02:32.
responded to. It has to be remembered that this is not a full | :02:33. | :02:36.
public enquiry, those can go on for years. In fact the four`year period | :02:37. | :02:39.
they are looking at is one xear younger than the Staffordshhre | :02:40. | :02:45.
enquiry. Matthew Hill, BBC Points West, Bristol. | :02:46. | :02:47.
70 football fans in the Avon and Somerset area are | :02:48. | :02:50.
among those having to hand hn their passports ahead of the World Cup. | :02:51. | :02:53.
It's because they've been involvdd in | :02:54. | :02:55.
violence or hooliganism at latches, including the Bristol Rovers versus | :02:56. | :02:57.
The fans have until tomorrow to give police their passports | :02:58. | :03:01.
Figures obtained by the BBC show students at the | :03:02. | :03:06.
University of the West of England are lodging more appeals and | :03:07. | :03:09.
complaints about their educ`tion than almost any other university. | :03:10. | :03:13.
In fact, only two other universities had more grievances last ye`r. | :03:14. | :03:17.
There was a time when a university education was free | :03:18. | :03:23.
So perhaps it's no surprise that complaints have risen. | :03:24. | :03:31.
At UWE, roughly 2.5% of students complained or appealed last year. | :03:32. | :03:36.
The university's minister says it shows undergraduates | :03:37. | :03:40.
There are large numbers of students who have not, historically, | :03:41. | :03:46.
in English universities, had the quality of teaching they | :03:47. | :03:48.
But I actually think that trends are now going in the right direction, | :03:49. | :03:53.
not least because students `re far more demanding than ever before | :03:54. | :03:56.
But some of the complaints and appeals | :03:57. | :03:59.
Students who had hayfever in their exams, for example, | :04:00. | :04:05.
Also those who can't park their cars can complain. | :04:06. | :04:11.
I think that's really posithve and I think it's good that students are | :04:12. | :04:15.
looking at their education in that way. | :04:16. | :04:18.
For UWE to actually listen to students, to act on those appeals, | :04:19. | :04:21.
I think is brilliant and thdy should continue to do so. | :04:22. | :04:24.
Even so, UWE's complaints and appeals are much higher than | :04:25. | :04:27.
some similar`sized universities suggesting its students are now | :04:28. | :04:31.
Earlier, we asked Julie McLdod from the University of the West | :04:32. | :04:43.
of England if she was worridd about the number of complaints. | :04:44. | :04:46.
The main areas that our students are putting forward their compl`ints | :04:47. | :04:49.
in are around some areas financial, which we have seen an incre`se in, | :04:50. | :04:54.
covering car parking, accomlodation, but also the largest majority are | :04:55. | :04:58.
students telling us or informing us of personal circumstances that | :04:59. | :05:01.
they feel affect the abilitx to succeed and progress. | :05:02. | :05:04.
Compared to other universithes these are really high numbers | :05:05. | :05:10.
Against the sector we are a large university, | :05:11. | :05:15.
and therefore proportionately it is less than half a percent | :05:16. | :05:18.
But more importantly for us is that we are open `nd | :05:19. | :05:22.
transparent about capturing that student voice and their complaints | :05:23. | :05:25.
and appeals, and effectivelx making sure that we learn from those | :05:26. | :05:30.
We take that satisfaction vdry much by the fact that we have such | :05:31. | :05:37.
a small number of those complaints going to | :05:38. | :05:39.
the independent adjudicator, for which we have been commdnded. | :05:40. | :05:42.
In an essence, with high sttdent fees you are a business. | :05:43. | :05:45.
You must be worried about ctstomers, i.e. | :05:46. | :05:47.
students, looking at these figures and saying | :05:48. | :05:49.
Well certainly there are hehghtened expectations | :05:50. | :05:54.
But we have to be very clear that in many cases these aren't formal | :05:55. | :06:00.
These are students informing, they're going through | :06:01. | :06:02.
a formal process, but as far as dissatisfaction we are | :06:03. | :06:08.
talking about 142 complaints, of which we need to have lessons | :06:09. | :06:11.
One example is the reduction by 50% of the complaints | :06:12. | :06:17.
around accommodation this ydar from what we learned last ydar. | :06:18. | :06:20.
There's more news on the BBC website, but for now i'll ldave you | :06:21. | :06:27.
Thank you. We still have a few showers lingering around. The main | :06:28. | :06:37.
story is rain pushing northwards later tonight. That will very much | :06:38. | :06:41.
be a feature through good p`rts of Wednesday. Through the course of | :06:42. | :06:48.
tonight temperatures dropping to nine to 12 Celsius. Rain pushing | :06:49. | :06:54.
northwards towards midnight. In rush hour that could be heavy in places. | :06:55. | :07:02.
East of the M5 or so. The ddtail still very elusive as the d`y wears | :07:03. | :07:09.
on. You will find the edge of that rain goes into eastern areas. | :07:10. | :07:13.
Through the evening there whll be an erratic but steady improvemdnt with | :07:14. | :07:16.
some brighter weather coming through. A good part of the day will | :07:17. | :07:23.
be wet or cloudy until that stage. Temperatures will struggle, 12 or 13 | :07:24. | :07:30.
Celsius. But it will feel cool. On Thursday a day of | :07:31. | :07:33.
outlook, we have some thunderstorms this Saturday. | :07:34. | :07:42.
Interest ring aggression of weather for the rest of this week which | :07:43. | :07:49.
could end up as a crescendo on Saturday involving heavy rain. Rain | :07:50. | :07:54.
in the shorter term forecast, heading in from the south. It is | :07:55. | :07:58.
knocking on the door already and will make a miserable day tomorrow. | :07:59. | :08:03.
Rain pushing up Rahm Northern France and get into southern part of | :08:04. | :08:09.
England and Wales by the end of the night. Showers ahead of that. A | :08:10. | :08:12.
relatively mild night except in the northern half of Scotland. | :08:13. | :08:15.
Temperatures will get down into single figures. But that is the area | :08:16. | :08:21.
that ends up with a dry start tomorrow. Across most of the | :08:22. | :08:28.
country, it is a mass of rain. It will ebb and flow, but there will be | :08:29. | :08:32.
heavy bursts and the some places it could rain on and off all day. By | :08:33. | :08:38.
the afternoon the rain has din Scotland as well, except in the | :08:39. | :08:41.
West. Dry conditions here and maybe hang onto sunny conditions. Western | :08:42. | :08:49.
parts of Wales and south-west England will be drier | :08:50. | :08:50. |
