Good evening. evening on the BBC News Channel

:00:11.:00:11.

Marines from Somerset`based 40 Comm`ndo

:00:12.:00:12.

paraded through Weston`super`Mare today, as they were awarded

:00:13.:00:16.

It's the first time Weston has bestowed the honour in nearly

:00:17.:00:22.

To an uplifting beat, 40 Colmando marched into town to receivd

:00:23.:00:32.

It is quite a spine`tingling moment to walk around that corner `nd see

:00:33.:00:39.

such a great number of people cheering and waving their flags

:00:40.:00:42.

We are Somerset's Royal Marhnes and Weston`super`Mare is ond

:00:43.:00:48.

of the biggest towns in Somdrset. So it's an enormous honour.

:00:49.:00:51.

That I officially present the scroll to 40 Commando...

:00:52.:00:55.

Taunton`based 40 Commando h`s strong links with Weston.

:00:56.:00:59.

And ties with Somerset were strengthened further when m`rines

:01:00.:01:04.

I think for Weston`super`Mare it's wonderful.

:01:05.:01:10.

We haven't done a Freedom since 1967, RAF Locking, so we can

:01:11.:01:14.

It is just so special, what they do for this country and everything

:01:15.:01:22.

freedoms that we all take for granted.

:01:23.:01:26.

There is not a lot you can say, only thank you.

:01:27.:01:30.

40 Commando exercised their new Freedom with a parade

:01:31.:01:33.

The event tied in with Armed Forces Day and the Weston Air Festhval

:01:34.:01:39.

Shows of military strength on the ground ` and in the sky.

:01:40.:01:45.

Madeleine Ware, BBC Points West Weston`super`Mare.

:01:46.:01:51.

Firefighters in Trowbridge `bandoned plans for strike action tod`y to

:01:52.:01:53.

tackle a serious fire at Sh`nley's scrap yard in the town.

:01:54.:01:57.

40 crew members have spent `ll day bringing 750 tonnes of burning

:01:58.:02:01.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for many miles.

:02:02.:02:07.

The longest day of the year has been seen in

:02:08.:02:10.

They gathered around the famous Wiltshire stones

:02:11.:02:14.

The ancient stones, the perfect backdrop to this all`night

:02:15.:02:24.

Everyone hoping sunrise on the longest day would be

:02:25.:02:30.

as good as this ` the sunset which greeted people as they arrived.

:02:31.:02:35.

Last year it was too misty, the year before we had horizontal rahn.

:02:36.:02:40.

Hopefully this year we will get a clear one.

:02:41.:02:44.

So why bother making the jotrney to this far`flung corner of Wiltshire,

:02:45.:02:48.

then having to walk nearly a mile from your car to the stones

:02:49.:02:51.

Magically, spiritually reborn, transitioning through the

:02:52.:03:00.

I think it is fantastic. It is a nice atmosphere.

:03:01.:03:06.

It is a nicer atmosphere th`n a lot of festivals,

:03:07.:03:10.

everyone seems to be a lot lore laid back and it is perfect.

:03:11.:03:13.

And it is free. You can't beat it.

:03:14.:03:15.

It is very, very noisy. Very noisy.

:03:16.:03:21.

Are you going to stay up for the sunrise?

:03:22.:03:24.

The wait this year was worth the reward.

:03:25.:03:31.

Regulars saying that this is as good a solstice sunrise

:03:32.:03:34.

Scott Ellis, BBC Points West, Stonehenge.

:03:35.:03:43.

Lovely clear skies for the early morning sun ` and more

:03:44.:03:45.

Tonight it'll be fine and dry with clear skies, and then

:03:46.:03:49.

early mist clearing tomorrow to make way for a bright, sunny morning

:03:50.:03:52.

a bit more cloud developing for the afternoon but still feeling warm.

:03:53.:03:55.

And the fine and settled conditions continue into next week.

:03:56.:04:05.

Finally, we're very sad to announce the death

:04:06.:04:07.

of a much respected colleagte here at the BBC ` Trevor Fry.

:04:08.:04:10.

For 17 years, Trevor shared his warmth and passion

:04:11.:04:13.

for the West with BBC local radio listeners ` most recently presenting

:04:14.:04:16.

the Sunday Morning Breakfast Show and the Late Show.

:04:17.:04:20.

An award`winning broadcaster and valued friend, he'll be much

:04:21.:04:23.

missed by us all, and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

:04:24.:04:34.

How the everyone knows that Trevor had a connection

:04:35.:04:40.

with his listeners. They take great delight in saying that everx night

:04:41.:04:44.

they went to bed with Trevor Fry and he used to play on that jokd all the

:04:45.:04:48.

time and it is because he h`d that personality and that warmth that

:04:49.:04:52.

people felt that they knew him and regarded him not as a presenter but

:04:53.:04:54.

as a friend. For many years Trevor presented the

:04:55.:04:56.

Sunday breakfast programme `cross morning from 6am for a spechal

:04:57.:04:59.

tribute as we remember Trevor Fry. That's all for now `

:05:00.:05:05.

we'll say goodbye. For the majority of the British

:05:06.:05:19.

Isles, today has wrought long spells of warm sunshine and it is the

:05:20.:05:23.

longest day. There is plenty more to come this evening, and yet more on

:05:24.:05:28.

the cards for tomorrow. For many of us, the changes between today and

:05:29.:05:32.

tomorrow are very slight. Northern Scotland has been an exception.

:05:33.:05:35.

Tonight, thick cloud is pushing in here again. Rain in the Highland and

:05:36.:05:42.

crossing into the Murray for by dawn. -- the Moret Firth.

:05:43.:05:48.

For northern Scotland, great prospects again on Sunday. If

:05:49.:05:53.

anything, some heavier and more persistent rain. For the south,

:05:54.:06:03.

though, plenty of sunshine. And once again across England and Wales,

:06:04.:06:07.

sparkling skies and as the sun comes up, temperatures will

:06:08.:06:09.
