A deal has finally been struck which may lead to a fire being put | :00:00. | :00:16.
The burning waste at the site in Swindon has left a cloud | :00:17. | :00:21.
of smoke hanging over the town for almost a month. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Swindon, a town under a cloud. For 24 days the fire at this waste | :00:24. | :00:36.
facility has smouldered, filling the air with the stench of burning | :00:37. | :00:40.
plastic. It's proved too much for businesses nearby. This one forced | :00:41. | :00:45.
to close for nine days. And local residents all say enough is enough. | :00:46. | :00:49.
It's been really bad actually. There's been ash falling down. It's | :00:50. | :00:57.
really smoky. You just stink, your hair, your clothes. It's been quite | :00:58. | :01:00.
horrendous when it's blowing over this way. It's been quite hard | :01:01. | :01:03.
especially with the hot weather. We have not been able to open windows, | :01:04. | :01:08.
get fresh air rolling through. Can't hang washing out. It's been quite | :01:09. | :01:13.
hot in the house. Also the smell is just horrible. It's not like a | :01:14. | :01:19.
barbecue smell. But it's a rubbery, Burney smell. It's not been very | :01:20. | :01:23.
nice, especially it's been nearly a month now. This has been the problem | :01:24. | :01:27.
for firefighters. Tightly stacked mounds of 1,000 tonnes of household | :01:28. | :01:31.
waste, difficult to get to, difficult to put out. But today at | :01:32. | :01:35.
long last for local residents, a deal has been struck which could see | :01:36. | :01:39.
some of this waste that isn't on fire taken off site which would | :01:40. | :01:44.
allow firefighters better access to put out the flames. The council had | :01:45. | :01:48.
suggested dumping the waste at this park and ride site. But to the joy | :01:49. | :01:54.
of campaigners today that plan was ditched. Instead, the firm which | :01:55. | :01:58.
runs the site has been ordered to move the waste out of town and foot | :01:59. | :02:04.
the bill. They've been instructed by the Environment Agency to start | :02:05. | :02:07.
removing the waste from tomorrow. It will be then up to the Environment | :02:08. | :02:12.
Agency if that doesn't happen to ensure that is carried out. So to | :02:13. | :02:17.
enable the Fire Brigade to get in and put the fire out. Firefighters | :02:18. | :02:22.
warn that removing the rubbish will in itself fan the flames in a fire | :02:23. | :02:26.
that may yet have a month to burn. But at least today a whiff of hope | :02:27. | :02:29.
for those fed up with the fumes. The Prime Minister has been | :02:30. | :02:34.
in the West today as he cut short his summer break to oversee | :02:35. | :02:38.
Britain's aid mission to Iraq. David Cameron was at Cotswold | :02:39. | :02:40.
Airport in Gloucestershire. He was shown | :02:41. | :02:42.
the aid being packed to leave Solar`powered lamps and water | :02:43. | :02:46.
filters are among the items A light aircraft narrowly missed | :02:47. | :02:50.
a tower in school grounds moments That's the finding of a report | :02:51. | :02:56.
into an accident near Downside Abbey Investigators say the pilot, | :02:57. | :03:00.
Glenn Packmeyer, who was 66, did take action to avoid | :03:01. | :03:03.
the tower but crashed Thousands | :03:04. | :03:07.
of A`level students picked up their results today and found out if | :03:08. | :03:18.
they've got a place at university. But a survey of 650 local companies | :03:19. | :03:21.
has found only 28% of employers thought university graduates had the | :03:22. | :03:24.
skills needed for the workplace. That dropped to 10% | :03:25. | :03:26.
when they were asked if A Levels And just 5% believe those who leave | :03:27. | :03:29.
school at 16 can cope with what's So what's gone wrong | :03:30. | :03:36.
and what's being done about it? Here's our business | :03:37. | :03:42.
correspondent Dave Harvey. You are actually having a business | :03:43. | :03:54.
network meeting in your school. Yes, it's double networking in the school | :03:55. | :04:00.
hall. We are in Thornebury at the Castle School where 6th formers are | :04:01. | :04:05.
coming face`to`face with many local companies to learn a vital lesson. | :04:06. | :04:11.
People buy people and funnily enough, people buy people they like. | :04:12. | :04:16.
Next year, these students will take their A`levels, but already they've | :04:17. | :04:20.
learned they need something else, something simpler and yet scarier ` | :04:21. | :04:25.
the ability to talk to somebody you don't know. Our generation, people | :04:26. | :04:31.
are scared to talk to people, to pick up the phone and ring someone | :04:32. | :04:36.
is terrifying. We are reliant on using Facebook and Twitter and | :04:37. | :04:39.
connecting without being able to see your face. Whilst they have the hard | :04:40. | :04:44.
skills when they first leave school or university, they might know all | :04:45. | :04:48.
the maths that they need for accounting and suchlike. What they | :04:49. | :04:51.
haven't got are some communication skills. It's a widespread complaint. | :04:52. | :04:57.
Thousands of firms told Business West of their exasperation with the | :04:58. | :05:02.
quality of new recruits. They have to do some basic training over | :05:03. | :05:07.
again. A lot of the attitude stuff, getting up on time, coming to work | :05:08. | :05:11.
dressed properly, attitude, the right attitude. A combination of | :05:12. | :05:17.
things. Soft skills, functional skills, expectations, enterprise. | :05:18. | :05:21.
It's why so many employers turned up for this networking day. Not to | :05:22. | :05:25.
recruit, but to help people like Ben get ready for the world of work. So | :05:26. | :05:31.
what has he learned? Obviously got enthusiastic, smiling face, happy, | :05:32. | :05:35.
looking forward to meeting them. Open body language, all these | :05:36. | :05:39.
things. I came here today, butterflies in my stomach, | :05:40. | :05:43.
obviously, but once I got involved it becomes easier. So much easier to | :05:44. | :05:47.
talk to people once you relax a little bit. Can you get A*s in | :05:48. | :05:50.
networking? Maybe you should. A Cheltenham man who was the first | :05:51. | :05:59.
to swim the length of Britain has Sean Conway swam from Lands End to | :06:00. | :06:02.
John O'Groats over the course of He's now running between the two | :06:03. | :06:07.
places, completely unsupported. His latest adventure | :06:08. | :06:10.
start very well. He tripped on a rock while running, | :06:11. | :06:16.
and taking a selfie. There's more news on the BBC | :06:17. | :06:18.

tomorrow from 6.30am. But for now I'll leave you Ian | :06:22. | :06:23.
who has the latest forecast. Some heavy showers and storps | :06:24. | :06:34.
brought flash flooding to parts of Gloucester `` storms. It brought a | :06:35. | :06:38.
few funnel clouds, as well. This spotted open Weston`super`Mare. | :06:39. | :06:42.
Through tomorrow there won't be threat of that weather but a few | :06:43. | :06:46.
showers around. Generally speak ago good deal of dry and bright sunny | :06:47. | :06:51.
weather. Through tonight we are losing the last of the showers | :06:52. | :06:53.
towards the south`east. A dry night following. Temperatures dropping to | :06:54. | :06:59.
about 9`11C for most. Higher than that in main urban centres. Tomorrow | :07:00. | :07:02.
morning most starting dry. Maybe one or two light showers. Through the | :07:03. | :07:06.
day the further east you are from the M5, the greater the chance you | :07:07. | :07:10.
might see one or two showers. At most mod rattly heavy. Many areas | :07:11. | :07:14.
will be avoiding those `` moderately. Some reasonable sunny | :07:15. | :07:18.
spells from time to time. Those showers will fade into the evening. | :07:19. | :07:22.
Temperatures will get up higher than today, about 19, maybe as high as | :07:23. | :07:27.
21C. It will turn cloudy through Saturday but a dry, decent day. | :07:28. | :07:33.
are very few showers around. It may be dry Saturday and Sunday, a chilly | :07:34. | :07:37.
wind, the national picture again with Louise now. | :07:38. | :07:44.
Many of us have been asking the question, where has summer gone? | :07:45. | :07:46.
Today, | :07:47. | :07:47. |
