It's emerged that a computer hard drive containing confidenti`l

information about crime victims was lost at a prison in Wiltshire.

The Ministry of Justice has now been fined ?180,000

after the hard drive went mhssing at Erlestoke jail near Devizes.

Here's our Home Affairs Correspondent, Steve Brodie.

The back`up hard drive was lost here in May last year.

It was not encrypted and contained sensitive

and confidential information, including links to organised crime,

visitors to the prison and, most alarmingly, material about victims.

The Information Commissioner's Office investigation

into the mistake revealed that the Prison Service did not dven

realise that the encryption option needed to be turned on to protect

the highly`sensitive data hhdden on the back`up hard drive.

The Ministry of Justice, through the Prison Service customer must treat

personal information properly and they must keep it secure and failure

to do so in this negligent we simply will not be tolerated by us as the

information Commissioner 's office. And what's more, the Prison Service

management still haven't fotnd the They could not find

it and that is part of the problem. Nobody knows where it is or how it

gained access. Although the Ministry of Justice said this was not in the

public domain, they do not `ctually know that. That is the problem.

And it was not just Erlestoke which failed to so seriouslx.

The investigation discovered that information was being insectrely

handled at all 74 prisons in England and Wales.
