Police in Bath have called off the search

:00:11.:00:13.

for 18`year`old Sammuel Amin after a body was found in the Rivdr Avon.

:00:14.:00:16.

This is the sixth death on a small stretch of water

:00:17.:00:19.

Tonight an extra ?400,000 h`s been promised to try

:00:20.:00:22.

Three other students have dhed in the river since 2009.

:00:23.:00:30.

In a moment, we'll speak to one of the city's universities abott what

:00:31.:00:33.

they'll be doing as thousands of new undergraduates descend on the city.

:00:34.:00:37.

First thing this morning, and police divers were back

:00:38.:00:45.

in the River Avon, searching the waters near the footpath whdre it's

:00:46.:00:47.

Then just before midday, the news that everyone had been

:00:48.:00:53.

And although not formally identified, police are sure it is

:00:54.:00:58.

An hour before we found the body, I went to see the family to update

:00:59.:01:06.

Less than an hour later, I had to go back and tell them the sad news

:01:07.:01:10.

As you would understand, they were absolutely distratght

:01:11.:01:14.

They are a religious family, very close`knit.

:01:15.:01:16.

Many members of the family there when I had to deliver the ndws so,

:01:17.:01:19.

Sammuel was last seen by his friends at the Opa club in the

:01:20.:01:25.

Today they were grieving for a friend who'd they known all

:01:26.:01:30.

It needs to be sorted out because this can't keep happening.

:01:31.:01:37.

The council need to have done something not this year,

:01:38.:01:45.

like years ago, when the first casualty arose from this.

:01:46.:01:49.

The 18`year`old from Twerton was due to start university next week.

:01:50.:01:53.

The path he took along by the river was a regular route home.

:01:54.:01:58.

This is a well used path but you can see there's no railings up there.

:01:59.:02:01.

Unless you come down this slope if you've tripped, this is the only

:02:02.:02:04.

There now been six deaths in five years and many people say this

:02:05.:02:10.

Last year following a safetx report, an 850 yard fence was installed

:02:11.:02:16.

along a stretch of the river to improve water safety.

:02:17.:02:21.

For the parents of graphic designer Casper Flagg,

:02:22.:02:24.

who died when he fell into the Avon after a night out five years ago,

:02:25.:02:27.

I would have thought they could design this river to make it safe

:02:28.:02:38.

They either have to do that work or shut this path late at night

:02:39.:02:44.

or have street lights along, cameras along.

:02:45.:02:48.

You can't have people going along these rivers and not knowing

:02:49.:02:51.

Tonight, the waters of the River Avon look calm.

:02:52.:02:58.

But there's shock throughout the city that once again another

:02:59.:03:01.

The extra ?400,000 pledged tonight will be spent on more railings,

:03:02.:03:11.

life buoys and other measurds to give anyone that falls

:03:12.:03:13.

But the campaigner responsible says that fencing alone won't be enough.

:03:14.:03:23.

is we have to get out there with an awareness campaign.

:03:24.:03:26.

is we have to get out there with an awareness campaign.

:03:27.:03:30.

We have to get out and tell the universities,

:03:31.:03:32.

Now, I bet not one of them realises we had a rhver

:03:33.:03:37.

let alone probably the most dangerous river in the country.

:03:38.:03:40.

They have to be taught how to respect it.

:03:41.:03:46.

Chris Ellicott is from Bath Spa University and he joins me now.

:03:47.:03:52.

Thank you for speaking to us. What is another death here? Are xou

:03:53.:04:01.

worried for the safety of your students? Can I say first of all

:04:02.:04:07.

that this is a terrible tragedy and my sympathy goes to the pardnts of

:04:08.:04:12.

the young man who has lost his life. We at the University lost one of our

:04:13.:04:16.

students three years ago and it devastated the whole communhty. We

:04:17.:04:20.

have worked so hard since then to raise awareness of the diffhculties

:04:21.:04:25.

of the river, and tried to dncourage sorts of behaviour that will help

:04:26.:04:29.

students stay safe when in Bath What are you doing to raise

:04:30.:04:34.

awareness, low? We talk to `ll new students. We make them award that

:04:35.:04:38.

there is a river here and wd have all sorts of measures to help them.

:04:39.:04:43.

We have a buddy scheme, we have student mentors to help advhse them.

:04:44.:04:47.

We encourage them to stick together in the evenings and check that no

:04:48.:04:50.

one is missing from their group We have a bus service until three

:04:51.:04:58.

o'clock in the morning and ` free taxi service. We even have wrist

:04:59.:05:00.

bands this year, which young people respond to as a way of remelbering

:05:01.:05:03.

that they should be aware of something, to remind them of the

:05:04.:05:08.

need to stay safe. Let's be honest, student drinking culture exhsts

:05:09.:05:11.

everywhere, but what is going wrong in Bath? A lot of parents whll be

:05:12.:05:16.

wondering about it. I would not say that the drinking culture is

:05:17.:05:19.

necessarily limited to studdnts Certainly there is a drinking

:05:20.:05:23.

culture amongst young peopld. Nor would I say anything is wrong with

:05:24.:05:29.

Bass. Six students... Four students have died in the last six ydars

:05:30.:05:34.

there must be a problem, isn't there? This is not a problel limited

:05:35.:05:39.

to Bath. There have been de`ths in rivers other `` in other pl`ces

:05:40.:05:44.

across the country. We need to make students aware of the need to be

:05:45.:05:48.

responsible when they are drinking. We also work with club and pub

:05:49.:05:52.

owners to make them access their responsibilities as well in this

:05:53.:05:55.

There are calls for an inquhry into why more wasn't done to prevent a

:05:56.:06:04.

fire at a recycling plant in Swindon which burned for eight weeks.

:06:05.:06:07.

The flames at the Averies yard have finally been

:06:08.:06:09.

put out, but the smell of sloke over nearby homes is yet to go away.

:06:10.:06:13.

Councillors will discuss on Thursday whether to hold an investig`tion

:06:14.:06:15.

Football now and all our teams were in action tonight.

:06:16.:06:20.

Amongst the games, League One leaders Bristol City

:06:21.:06:22.

continued their unbeaten st`rt to the season away at Port Vald.

:06:23.:06:27.

While sixth`placed Swindon shared the points at home to Oldhal.

:06:28.:06:30.

And Bristol Rovers had a 3`0 win against Nuneaton in the Conference.

:06:31.:06:39.

But for now here's Ian with the latest forecast.

:06:40.:06:47.

Some of you saw heavy showers today. We should not do tomorrow. @ lot of

:06:48.:06:54.

cloud are wrong `` run first thing but the afternoon should become

:06:55.:06:58.

breezy and quite warm. Tempdratures tonight down to about 15 Celsius,

:06:59.:07:03.

not particularly chilly. Lots of low cloud invading from the east and it

:07:04.:07:09.

will spill into the M5 giving a lot of hill fog in central areas

:07:10.:07:12.

tomorrow morning and it will take a while for it to disperse,

:07:13.:07:17.

particularly towards the North. A much better story into the

:07:18.:07:21.

afternoon, more sunshine around and remaining dry. Rather breezx, but

:07:22.:07:29.

temperatures in the mid to low 0s. The next chance of rain, first into

:07:30.:07:31.

Friday. you now with Darren Bett and the

:07:32.:07:32.

national weather. This cloud looks worse than it is.

:07:33.:08:02.

Glitching the extreme south-west overnight. Ahead of it we've got an

:08:03.:08:09.

easterly air flow. That low cloud

:08:10.:08:10.
