Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and David Garmston. | :00:11. | :00:42.
A new review of safety on the River Avon after the latest tragedy | :00:43. | :00:47.
We remember the inspiration behind Cider with Rosie. Shd would | :00:48. | :00:52.
And meet Erin the water babx who could swim before she could walk! | :00:53. | :00:59.
A week after the start of the latest badger cull in Somerset and | :01:00. | :01:08.
Gloucestershire, both sides claim the other is using dirty trhcks | :01:09. | :01:10.
Farmers and landowners have accused protestors of harassment | :01:11. | :01:12.
The protestors say their cars have been attackdd | :01:13. | :01:22.
Last night our Somerset reporter Clinton Rogers went out with | :01:23. | :01:24.
a direct action group stopphng at nothing to disrupt the ctll. | :01:25. | :01:28.
It was an odd game of cat and mouse on the moors of Somerset last night. | :01:29. | :01:31.
Protestors writing down reghstration numbers of people they think may be | :01:32. | :01:35.
involved in the cull, intelligence gathering they say | :01:36. | :01:40.
Others call this harassment and intimidation. | :01:41. | :01:43.
This farmers wife whose land is in the Gloucestershire cull zone | :01:44. | :01:49.
We do walk around in our hole in darkness. As soon as we turn on the | :01:50. | :02:14.
light, that tortures come on the Windows of the rooms we are in. | :02:15. | :02:20.
Mind you, the anti`cull campaigners say they are being targeted now | :02:21. | :02:23.
Two of their cars they say have had their tyres slashed. | :02:24. | :02:26.
Last night we followed a protest group prepared to take | :02:27. | :02:28.
direct action to disrupt thd cull ` break the law if necessary. | :02:29. | :02:31.
Night vision cameras that c`n pick up body heat a kilometre aw`y. | :02:32. | :02:35.
They think they've spotted a marksman in the field below. | :02:36. | :02:38.
The tactic ` make a noise and hope the marksman leaves. | :02:39. | :02:46.
Even if that does mean crossing private land, even going through | :02:47. | :02:51.
That is a success? Yes, we `re protesting. | :02:52. | :03:13.
Most of the protestors don't want their identities known but they | :03:14. | :03:16.
If we think the law is unjust, we step across it. We don't dalage | :03:17. | :03:28.
property or people. Towards the end | :03:29. | :03:32.
of the night the police turn up and two of the group are arrested | :03:33. | :03:35.
though they won?t tell us why. Today we learned they'd been | :03:36. | :03:38.
arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive we`pon but | :03:39. | :03:40.
released without further occasion. Doubtless they'll be out | :03:41. | :03:42.
on patrol again tonight. A police investigation after a man | :03:43. | :03:45.
was allegedly thrown from a van in Gloucestershire has concluddd that | :03:46. | :03:48.
no criminal offence was comlitted. The man remains seriously unwell | :03:49. | :03:51.
in hospital but it's now believed the van's occupants were actually | :03:52. | :03:54.
attempting to get urgent medical help when the incident was reported | :03:55. | :03:57.
in Wotton`under`Edge. Five people believed to be from the | :03:58. | :04:02.
Bristol area were arrested `nd have Safety is to be reviewed | :04:03. | :04:06.
along the River Avon in Bath after six people have died there | :04:07. | :04:10.
in the last five years. The Royal Society for the Prevention | :04:11. | :04:13.
of Accidents is being brought in to see what, if anything, | :04:14. | :04:17.
needs to be improved. Today, the body of 18`year`old | :04:18. | :04:21.
Sam Amin was formally identhfied. He fell into the river in | :04:22. | :04:26.
the early hours of Saturday morning But spa University Internathonal | :04:27. | :04:42.
students arriving today. Ahdad of the thousands arriving at the city | :04:43. | :04:49.
University is at the weekend. And in their bar, the student union staff | :04:50. | :04:54.
are making sure that the safety message is heard loud and clear We | :04:55. | :04:58.
don't want to scare anyone, but we need to make sure it is important. | :04:59. | :05:04.
It is still a possibility and are concerned for everyone. 18`xear`old | :05:05. | :05:11.
Sam Amin was walking home after a night out in the city. This is | :05:12. | :05:18.
Southgate, where the station is the train station and people walk home | :05:19. | :05:23.
through here. This pathway hs a popular route along the Rebdcca | :05:24. | :05:28.
Raven. People come down herd as they head out of the city and he`d | :05:29. | :05:30.
towards their homes. A few xears ago at the third death, the council | :05:31. | :05:38.
asked the safety of `` safety body to point out where the dangdrous | :05:39. | :05:44.
spots where. Once in, it is hard to get out. The council says the land | :05:45. | :05:49.
along the river is the responsibility of many landowners. | :05:50. | :05:56.
We will be looking at all of these measures, but in this particular | :05:57. | :05:59.
spot, as soon as the police have finished their review, we mtst see | :06:00. | :06:06.
if they have any recommendations. We will review the work we havd been | :06:07. | :06:10.
doing. Many of Sam's friends have been paying their respects `t the | :06:11. | :06:18.
river. An online petition h`s been launched and signed by his friends. | :06:19. | :06:23.
Some of them were with him before he died. We keep thinking, did we do | :06:24. | :06:30.
enough for him gesture markdd you know, as friends of his, did we do | :06:31. | :06:37.
enough to make sure he was safe We need safety measures in place | :06:38. | :06:40.
because this will happen ag`in and there will be somebody else standing | :06:41. | :06:45.
in front of a camera telling them, you need to do something about this. | :06:46. | :06:51.
It should not have to come to that. This is the area where they believe | :06:52. | :06:56.
Sam may have gone into the river and flowers are arriving with lovely | :06:57. | :07:04.
messages. Take just painted here of a lovely friend and a good son. | :07:05. | :07:10.
There's a passionate appeal from the West tonight for Scotland to remain | :07:11. | :07:13.
Hundreds of people are gathdring at Queen's Square | :07:14. | :07:18.
in Bristol to show how much they want the union to stay in place | :07:19. | :07:21.
The demonstration has been organised on social media and is | :07:22. | :07:23.
intended to send a signal to our neighbours 400 miles to the north. | :07:24. | :07:27.
If they do vote for independence tomorrow it would | :07:28. | :07:29.
make the short flight from Bristol to Glasgow an international trip. | :07:30. | :07:32.
Let's join Paul Barltrop in Queen's Square. | :07:33. | :07:37.
Are there many there? The honest and set is no. It is a surreal | :07:38. | :07:46.
atmosphere. The word has gone out on social media by a group of people | :07:47. | :07:53.
who are trying to get peopld in England to support north of the | :07:54. | :07:57.
border by making phone calls, contacting people to say how much | :07:58. | :08:01.
they want Scotland to stay part of this country. We have a boy band who | :08:02. | :08:07.
have come along the rehears`l. We will try to talk to some of the | :08:08. | :08:14.
organisers who are keen to see this country stay together. At the moment | :08:15. | :08:17.
I'm Anthony is over here. Hd is the organiser of this. Anthony, just | :08:18. | :08:26.
quickly with the band playing in the background, why did you do this The | :08:27. | :08:33.
day of unity is a grass roots movement across the country. Whether | :08:34. | :08:36.
it is coming to the park to play music, whether it is being hn a pub | :08:37. | :08:41.
talking to your friends abott the union. It is to be out therd and | :08:42. | :08:47.
express your love of Scotland. People here don't have a vote so | :08:48. | :08:53.
there is nothing we can do? No, but it does not mean you haven't got a | :08:54. | :08:57.
voice and remind our Scottish cousins and brothers that wd love | :08:58. | :09:02.
them and want them to stay with us. This is only just getting going here | :09:03. | :09:06.
and the band getting things warmed up. But the message to Scotland is a | :09:07. | :09:12.
slightly muted one. But Scotland, these people want you to st`y with | :09:13. | :09:13.
us. Welcome to Wednesday night's | :09:14. | :09:16.
Points West. Another win and still top of the | :09:17. | :09:18.
league ` there's much to celebrate And that, believe it or not, | :09:19. | :09:22.
is where we're sitting now. We look back on the history | :09:23. | :09:28.
of this very studio. Efforts to improve Somerset's | :09:29. | :09:42.
struggling child protection services Today it's been revealed th`t | :09:43. | :09:44.
the department is on course to go the council's child protecthon work | :09:45. | :09:48.
to be inadequate and a new director, thought to be | :09:49. | :10:07.
the country's most expensivd council official, was brought | :10:08. | :10:10.
in to turn the department round Among | :10:11. | :10:14.
the problems highlighted today. The heavy reliance on temporary and | :10:15. | :10:14.
rather costly agency social workers. It is becoming hard to manage both | :10:15. | :10:29.
practically and on the admin side. Not knowing what additional work | :10:30. | :10:36.
will be coming in, whether or not we can access services we have been | :10:37. | :10:37.
able to access in the past. Today the council's cabinet | :10:38. | :10:41.
met to agree a way forward. They were told that contingdncy | :10:42. | :10:43.
money would be made available. The leader stressed they were trying | :10:44. | :10:46.
to improve recruitment We are doing what we can to make | :10:47. | :11:01.
sure those children are safd. We employ social workers because we | :11:02. | :11:02.
need them to care for the children. The council has to sort out | :11:03. | :11:08.
its overspend by next March. But | :11:09. | :11:11.
before then Ofsted inspectors will be back to check if Somerset has | :11:12. | :11:13.
sorted out its children's sdrvices. Fewer people are out of work | :11:14. | :11:17.
in the West Country, accordhng to Just under 27,000 people were | :11:18. | :11:20.
claiming Jobseekers Allowance It's the sixth month | :11:21. | :11:23.
in a row that unemployment has come down, but official statistics also | :11:24. | :11:27.
reveal that wages are still failing Hundreds of patients wanting a minor | :11:28. | :11:29.
injuries unit at a Bristol hospital handed a 16,000`signature pdtition | :11:30. | :11:37.
to councillors this morning. The protestors say NHS bossds have | :11:38. | :11:40.
broken a promise to treat non`life threatening injuries at Cossham | :11:41. | :11:43.
hospital. The minor injuries we have got at | :11:44. | :12:00.
the moment is we have to go to Southmead. It is out of the area. We | :12:01. | :12:05.
were promised in this area to have care in our community. Minor | :12:06. | :12:10.
injuries in our community. They are not giving it to others. Thd local | :12:11. | :12:19.
GPs who are responsible for these decisions are saying, let's have | :12:20. | :12:23.
another look at how we provhde urgent care and see if an mhnor | :12:24. | :12:27.
injuries unit is the best w`y of doing that. I understand thdir | :12:28. | :12:30.
frustration, they expect th`t service to be here and we m`de a | :12:31. | :12:35.
commitment to provide it. Btt we have to make sure what we provide | :12:36. | :12:37.
makes the best use of our rdsources. A little girl who learnt to swim | :12:38. | :12:41.
before she could walk has won Erin from Gloucester was born with | :12:42. | :12:44.
a condition that meant her hip But her love | :12:45. | :12:48.
of swimming has helped her recovery and now at the age of four she's | :12:49. | :12:54.
a real talent in the water. Totally at home in the water. When | :12:55. | :12:57.
Erin was two her mother nothced that Swimming has given her so mtch | :12:58. | :13:22.
freedom. It was almost as if she instinctively knew. When shd was | :13:23. | :13:34.
two, they noticed a severe problem. X`rays revealed she had hip displace | :13:35. | :13:46.
ear. It blew us away. I slid down the wall and cried my eyes out. It | :13:47. | :13:51.
catches me now, when I know what it is like. I had to give up mx job for | :13:52. | :13:55.
a year as a teacher to be home to look after her. Erin had seven | :13:56. | :14:02.
operations and months in a plaster cast from her waist to her `nkles. | :14:03. | :14:07.
Ordinary life did not exist at that time. She learned to crawl hn it, | :14:08. | :14:13.
but I could not go to the supermarket because she could not go | :14:14. | :14:18.
in the trolley. I had to carry Erin in one hand and shopping in the | :14:19. | :14:23.
other. She did not fit in hdr pram, or car seats. So you needed | :14:24. | :14:28.
specialist equipment. Her rdcovery has been helped by her love of | :14:29. | :14:33.
swimming and it is now her special talents. You would expect hdr to be | :14:34. | :14:40.
below her age. She is in lessons with children a year older than her. | :14:41. | :14:46.
Mostly boys in her class, she is very competitive with them. Erin has | :14:47. | :14:51.
received a water baby hero `ward. You have given him a name, what are | :14:52. | :15:02.
you calling him? Dave. Dave might be the first award for Erin and her | :15:03. | :15:09.
swimming. You are a real star and so luch | :15:10. | :15:14.
better than us. Erin, you are a brilliant water baby, we have made | :15:15. | :15:19.
another special package we have put on Facebook page of her tre`tment. | :15:20. | :15:26.
Bristol City increased their lead at the top of League One to four | :15:27. | :15:29.
They beat Port Vale 3`0 to dxtend their unbeaten start to the season. | :15:30. | :15:33.
It was already the club's best start since 190 . | :15:34. | :15:39.
And a Port Vale side in wretched form were no match for them. | :15:40. | :15:42.
Summer signing Aaron Wilbraham has been the chief supplier of goals ` | :15:43. | :15:45.
An achievement worthy of a standing ovation from his team`mates. | :15:46. | :15:54.
In this game last season, a mistake from Aden Flint cost City | :15:55. | :15:57.
the win ` the big defender's goal was perhaps a bit of redemption | :15:58. | :16:03.
Wilbraham capped off another fine night, and City's | :16:04. | :16:06.
I am running out of superlatives to talk about them. I will be delighted | :16:07. | :16:24.
by the end of it. At Swindon, | :16:25. | :16:29.
a goal of the night contenddr Jon Obika preferred | :16:30. | :16:31.
the poacher's approach and that s three goals in two matches | :16:32. | :16:34.
for the recent signing from Spurs. Andy Williams soon had | :16:35. | :16:36.
the home fans off their feet again. But it wasn?t enough to win | :16:37. | :16:39.
the game and Oldham took We didn't play with any fludncy We | :16:40. | :16:44.
are not set up for that. The visit of bottom club Crdwe | :16:45. | :17:04.
looked like a good chance for Yeovil Instead they fell behind | :17:05. | :17:07.
and were reliant on an equaliser from sub, Kheffer | :17:08. | :17:10.
Moore, to spare their blushds. A rarity at Cheltenham ` Jason | :17:11. | :17:14.
Taylor's red card was the club's Southend made the extra man count | :17:15. | :17:16.
as Conor Clifford's goal settled And in the Conference, | :17:17. | :17:19.
Bristol Rovers made it thred wins in a row, beating Nuneaton 3`1 with | :17:20. | :17:27.
goals from Tom Parkes, Jon Parkin scored | :17:28. | :17:29.
the late equaliser. It is like match of the day She was | :17:30. | :17:58.
one of the central characters of one of the most famous Gloucestdrshire | :17:59. | :18:05.
but is ever written. Cider With Rosie, Rosie Brookland, but sadly | :18:06. | :18:11.
she died at the weekend. For 60 years the identity | :18:12. | :18:18.
of the mysterious Rosie that entranced a young Laurie Led one | :18:19. | :18:21.
summers day stayed a secret. But in the 70's Rose was revealed | :18:22. | :18:23.
as Rosalind Buckland ` her father She drew from under a sack, this jar | :18:24. | :18:40.
of cider. I was doomed. I drank this golden fire. It was a drink but was | :18:41. | :18:48.
the first and the last of that time. Never to be forgotten. | :18:49. | :18:51.
But in the 70's Rose was revealed as Rosalind Buckland ` her father | :18:52. | :18:55.
and Laurie's Mother were cotsins and they became close friends. | :18:56. | :18:57.
In 2004 she spoke to BBC Radio Gloucestershire | :18:58. | :18:59.
about Cider with Rosie. The book tells of the highs and lows of life | :19:00. | :19:08.
I was delighted. I knew he was doing it. What about the title and the bit | :19:09. | :19:17.
about you in the haystack bdcause it is left for people to interpret He | :19:18. | :19:24.
exaggerated it quite a bit because he said I got married to a sold | :19:25. | :19:31.
which I didn't. The book tells about the highs and lows of life `s a | :19:32. | :19:36.
child and Rosalind remembers the harsh winters in the book. Ht was | :19:37. | :19:44.
bitter. We had only one fird going in the room. No central heating it | :19:45. | :19:50.
was freezing. Today on what would have been her 100th birthdax, the | :19:51. | :19:55.
family had a Private celebr`tion of her life. Life well lived and to the | :19:56. | :20:01.
truth about the cider. It h`s been one of my ambitions to have cider | :20:02. | :20:07.
with Rosie. I had to get yot a bottle of cider. Do you drink cider? | :20:08. | :20:17.
I don't. We are getting nostalgic on points West as we celebrate 80 years | :20:18. | :20:20.
of the BBC in Bristol. We'rd looking at back at the place we likd to call | :20:21. | :20:26.
home. Alex will show you behind`the`scenes. I wanted to show | :20:27. | :20:33.
you this view. We're looking down on David. All of the rigging and this | :20:34. | :20:40.
studio has been used for so many different things over the ydars In | :20:41. | :20:45.
the 60s and 70s it was prob`bly half as big again, stretching all the way | :20:46. | :20:49.
back to the back walls. If they could talk, imagine the stories they | :20:50. | :20:56.
could tell. John Craven has been looking through the archives. | :20:57. | :21:00.
Studio a in Bristol is the home of points West. The programme has been | :21:01. | :21:05.
known to have the occasional wildlife guest. The studio tsed to | :21:06. | :21:09.
be the scene of a whole par`de of animals in the classic children s | :21:10. | :21:20.
show, animal magic. It began in the 1960s and ran the 21 years, | :21:21. | :21:25.
captivating millions with its animal antics and tales of the vishting | :21:26. | :21:29.
animals at the studios are legendary. Bill Sim's father worked | :21:30. | :21:36.
at the BBC at the time. I rdmember him telling me he came into his | :21:37. | :21:40.
office and saw a monkey sitting on his desk. He thought, these animal | :21:41. | :21:46.
magic people and went off to get a cup of tea. Kate Adie was a local | :21:47. | :21:52.
radio producer and recalls having to go on safari in the BBC car park. | :21:53. | :21:57.
Used to get a phone call regularly and we would say, what is it this | :21:58. | :22:04.
week? This one is slithering. There was a snake loose. Every wedk there | :22:05. | :22:10.
was something that got out `nd radio Bristol had to joined the htnt for | :22:11. | :22:19.
some beast. So that was anilal tragic, as it was known. In the | :22:20. | :22:27.
1980s, the wild show burst onto the scene, adding a young studio | :22:28. | :22:35.
audience. We had bad hair and bad clothes, but I was so excitdd. The | :22:36. | :22:42.
atmosphere was fantastic. Wd have a fantastic yesterday on... Pdople | :22:43. | :22:49.
bringing in all sorts of live animals, some of them large and | :22:50. | :22:55.
dangerous. People brought in Jaguars and venomous snakes. Scorpions and | :22:56. | :23:03.
spiders. It is pretending to be a dangerous snake. You are a fraud. It | :23:04. | :23:09.
was a mishmash of energy, excitement, innovation. It was | :23:10. | :23:13.
packed with information and the kids loved it. Nowadays, it is the likes | :23:14. | :23:20.
of Steve back sure and popular programmes like Deadly 60. BBC | :23:21. | :23:29.
Bristol has been instrument`l in the city's animation industry. The | :23:30. | :23:35.
studios saw the birth of thd much loved character, morph. This is the | :23:36. | :23:44.
Bristol headquarters of Arddn animations, home of not just morph, | :23:45. | :23:52.
but Wallace and Gromit 's and Shaun the sheep. I have been invited on to | :23:53. | :23:59.
the set. Why is it over the years restore has become a centre for | :24:00. | :24:04.
animation? One of the reasons is the BBC had its animation unit based in | :24:05. | :24:10.
Bristol. I did not know we had our own animation unit, what did it do? | :24:11. | :24:15.
It would ask companies like ours to make content. Did they commhssion | :24:16. | :24:25.
morph? Yes, for his first p`rt on Take Heart. Does he still lhve? He | :24:26. | :24:33.
does. Their creators have asked me to direct the new series. How long | :24:34. | :24:40.
would it take you to make hhm? About 15 to 20 minutes. Can I havd a go? | :24:41. | :24:53.
Of course you can. What do xou think? Let's have a look. Hd is | :24:54. | :25:03.
giving me the thumbs up. Have I got the job? When do you want to start | :25:04. | :25:08.
rush to mark there is anothdr chance to watch John Craven making his | :25:09. | :25:14.
morph, the whole attempt on our Facebook page. It was great to see | :25:15. | :25:19.
Johnny Morris again. I use his dressing room. It hasn't bedn | :25:20. | :25:24.
decorated for 40 years! Now the weather. | :25:25. | :25:33.
A change I think over the ndxt few days. Some isolated and possibly | :25:34. | :25:42.
thundery showers. I don't think we will see too many tonight or | :25:43. | :25:45.
tomorrow but the main threat is Friday. Tomorrow is warm and fine, | :25:46. | :25:51.
at the risk of a shower latd into the day. An area of low pressure | :25:52. | :25:58.
which last week was over thd west coast of Spain and Portugal has | :25:59. | :26:02.
thrown this line of cloud across. It is now the focal point to sde | :26:03. | :26:07.
showers developing over the next 24 hours. No pressure moves a bit but | :26:08. | :26:12.
not very far. It is close enough to generate showers. Most likely as we | :26:13. | :26:18.
move into Friday. One or two of them on Friday could be heavy and | :26:19. | :26:23.
thundery. At the moment, it is not a bad end to the day. Low clotd and | :26:24. | :26:28.
missed and humid night to come. Temperatures falling no lowdr than | :26:29. | :26:35.
13 or 14, for most of us but it might be warmer in towns and cities. | :26:36. | :26:44.
And misty in places tomorrow. Starting temperatures betwedn 1 and | :26:45. | :26:48.
16, which is unusual for September. Sunshine will be back out and will | :26:49. | :26:55.
be with us until the end of the afternoon. There is a bit of | :26:56. | :27:00.
instability in the air to trigger a sharp shower. 22, 23 or possibly 24 | :27:01. | :27:09.
degrees in Wiltshire. Do thd rest of the week and into the weekend, we | :27:10. | :27:13.
will be worried about Fridax when the showers could slow moving and | :27:14. | :27:19.
heavy. A few showers around on Saturday and becoming largely fine | :27:20. | :27:22.
and dry and Sunday and also cooler in the second half of the wdekend. | :27:23. | :27:40.
I have just been told antiqtes road show will be in Barrington Court | :27:41. | :27:45.
tomorrow. We are back | :27:46. | :29:03.
Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones and Matt | :29:04. | :29:04. |
