Thank you. And that is it from us for this | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening. evening. | :00:00. | :00:11.
Thousands of homes in Bristol are still without tap | :00:12. | :00:13.
water tonight after a burst pipe flooded a Kingswood street. | :00:14. | :00:16.
Hundreds have been queuing `t temporary bowsers to fill up bottles | :00:17. | :00:20.
and plastic containers as they go into a second night without water. | :00:21. | :00:23.
In a moment we'll ask Bristol Water how long this disruption will go | :00:24. | :00:26.
on for, but first Andrew Pl`nt has the story of the day. | :00:27. | :00:30.
Queuing around the corner in this car park today to g`ther | :00:31. | :00:34.
water for washing and a morning cup of tea as 24,000 homes woke up to | :00:35. | :00:40.
Workmen up to their chests in this gigantic hole in thd road, | :00:41. | :00:51.
digging out a water pipe th`t suddenly burst yesterday afternoon. | :00:52. | :00:56.
I heard a noise and looked out the window, `nd | :00:57. | :00:58.
It flooded 100 yards of road and poured into people's holes, | :00:59. | :01:11.
even forcing evacuations by boat for the very young | :01:12. | :01:15.
and the less able, carrier bags serving as improvised wellids, | :01:16. | :01:19.
Last night those stuck outshde kept warm beneath blankets. | :01:20. | :01:28.
This morning they woke up to mechanical diggers outside | :01:29. | :01:32.
Bristol water had dropped bottles on their doorsteps this morning | :01:33. | :01:42.
We are fortunate in that we have got electricity | :01:43. | :01:44.
Over the road they've got no electricity, water or gas so, we've | :01:45. | :01:47.
been helping the neighbours and just making a few flasks for thel over | :01:48. | :01:50.
there, just in case, becausd we ve got quite a few elderly neighbours. | :01:51. | :01:53.
And Mabel, you can't even gdt ready for school this morning? | :01:54. | :01:56.
No, there's no water for me to have a shower. | :01:57. | :02:00.
Several thousand homes are without water in the taps so these bowsers, | :02:01. | :02:04.
huge mobile water holders, have been filled up | :02:05. | :02:08.
Elsewhere they were handing out these pre`packaged six packs. | :02:09. | :02:14.
People struggling away beneath the weight. | :02:15. | :02:21.
Even once this pipe is repahred the water quality will have to be | :02:22. | :02:24.
There's no guarantee that tomorrow morning the taps of anyone who's | :02:25. | :02:29.
Well Paul Kelson is from Bristol Water and joins us now | :02:30. | :02:37.
So how is the repair work coming along? | :02:38. | :02:47.
It's going well at the moment. The actual pipe has been replacdd so we | :02:48. | :02:59.
have the new pipe in. The w`ter is flowing back through. The ndxt stage | :03:00. | :03:03.
is to bring the water back hnto the system through the reservoir and to | :03:04. | :03:07.
make sure the water quality is correct. It will take the rdst of | :03:08. | :03:13.
the evening but we are confhdent that the water will be on for the | :03:14. | :03:22.
mine. Do you know what happdned yet? No, the pipe is split along its | :03:23. | :03:26.
length. That's unusual. It doesn't look particularly in bad sh`pe. | :03:27. | :03:32.
We'll have to look at this when we get back to the depot. At the moment | :03:33. | :03:37.
the most important thing is getting the work done. A lot of people s | :03:38. | :03:43.
lives have been disrupted and businesses. People are saying you | :03:44. | :03:48.
acted faster. Are we looking at compensation yet? No, in a case like | :03:49. | :03:56.
this, obviously a burst watdr main can happen at any time. It's a big | :03:57. | :04:00.
network. The job we have is to fix it. In this case, we were ddlayed | :04:01. | :04:05.
because there were health and safety issues. Those issues had to be | :04:06. | :04:12.
looked at and by the time that had been fixed and the gas has been | :04:13. | :04:15.
disconnected we were behind in getting the work done. | :04:16. | :04:19.
We apologise, obviously. We thank the customers for their pathence. | :04:20. | :04:29.
On to other news and the outstanding bravery of lembers | :04:30. | :04:32.
of the public was recognised today, almost three years after ond of | :04:33. | :04:35.
Awards were presented to those who risked their lives to save others | :04:36. | :04:39.
Here's our Somerset Correspondent Clinton Rogers. | :04:40. | :04:45.
The worst crash in British lotorway history left 7 dead and 51 hnjured. | :04:46. | :04:50.
Much worse had not these people risked | :04:51. | :05:00.
People like Rebecca Williams, an off duty naval medic who herself | :05:01. | :05:08.
was injured in the crash, yet still went to treat othdrs. | :05:09. | :05:13.
Did it not occur to you to get out the way? | :05:14. | :05:19.
Yes, straight away, I need to get out the car and run. | :05:20. | :05:23.
But then I saw other people injured and my initial insthncts | :05:24. | :05:27.
You can't just let go and stand back and watch. | :05:28. | :05:39.
And yet, as one, these people said they didn't think | :05:40. | :05:44.
We weren't being brave, we were terrified. | :05:45. | :05:50.
We could see people that were trapped in cars and what do you do? | :05:51. | :05:53.
You can't just turn your back on people like that. | :05:54. | :05:56.
There were awards for the emergency services, too | :05:57. | :05:59.
many of them saying it was the toughest night of their lives. | :06:00. | :06:04.
Families of the victims comhng face`to`face with those who helped. | :06:05. | :06:10.
A chance to say 'thank you' four years on. | :06:11. | :06:19.
To rugby and Gloucester are fifth in the Premiership | :06:20. | :06:21.
after beating London Welsh by 4 points to 10 at the Kassam Stadium. | :06:22. | :06:29.
And Bristol remain top of the Championship beating | :06:30. | :06:30.
There's more news on the BBC Website and your local BBC Radio st`tions. | :06:31. | :06:39.
We're back with you throughout the weekend. | :06:40. | :06:40.
But for now, I'll leave you with a look at the weather forec`st with | :06:41. | :06:44.
Fog may be a problem as we go through the night. | :06:45. | :06:47.
Dense in places, particularly across the Mendips | :06:48. | :06:49.
the Somerset Levels, Salisbtry Plain, the normal prone spots. | :06:50. | :06:51.
That will keep temperatures up to around 12 or 13 Celsius. | :06:52. | :06:55.
So, it is another mild night but quite a murky one in pl`ces | :06:56. | :06:58.
And given the time of year, that the sun won't be up tomorrow morning | :06:59. | :07:02.
until about 7.30am or 8.00al, where we do get the fog it lay well | :07:03. | :07:05.
be slow to clear and it might not be until mid to late morning. | :07:06. | :07:09.
Once it does, we'll have a fine day on thd cards. | :07:10. | :07:11.
A lot of cloud but some bright and sunny spells. | :07:12. | :07:14.
A small chance of one or two spots of rain under the thicker cloud | :07:15. | :07:17.
And another warm day for thd end of the year. | :07:18. | :07:21.
A high tomorrow of around 18 or 19 Celsius. | :07:22. | :07:23.
Looking ahead to Sunday, it stays mainly dry, often cloudy. | :07:24. | :07:27.
Helen Willetts has the national forecast next. | :07:28. | :07:37.
Good evening. Some very useable weather on offer this weekend in. | :07:38. | :07:45.
Fact, most of September has been decent, and that's because our jet | :07:46. | :07:47.
