Hello. Tonight's headlines. The rolling of milk at a Llanwern | :00:13. | :00:23.
:00:23. | :00:33. | ||
Steelworks is mothballed for the Also tonight. He was a Nazi | :00:33. | :00:36.
collaborator in the Second World War. The National Library of Wales | :00:36. | :00:43.
has been criticised for accepting 300,000 that he left in his will. | :00:43. | :00:48.
Carers called for radical reform of their benefits. We here about their | :00:48. | :00:55.
money worries. The impact of any cuts on the heating now are | :00:55. | :01:02.
astronomical to the likes of us. We dread to the future. | :01:02. | :01:07.
This is where it all began for 12 year old who dreamt of playing for | :01:07. | :01:12.
his country. The Shane Williams story sees him taking his final bow | :01:12. | :01:19.
for Wales tomorrow. I am having trouble thinking about it. It will | :01:20. | :01:23.
be a great day and a day I will never forget. | :01:23. | :01:27.
We will hear from the woman who has followed his career from day one, | :01:27. | :01:34.
his mother. And very excited. I have worked to 24 hour shift and I | :01:34. | :01:40.
do not think I will sleep much tonight. | :01:40. | :01:45.
Hello. Yet another sign of the crisis in the economy. Tata Steel | :01:45. | :01:50.
has announced that it is mothballing of this site at | :01:50. | :01:54.
Llanwern. Unions and politicians have described been used as a blow | :01:54. | :01:58.
for Wales. Whether it is for cars, the | :01:58. | :02:01.
construction industry, or your kitchen appliances, Steele is | :02:02. | :02:08.
needed and a hot strip mill plays an important role. It is where huge | :02:08. | :02:12.
slabs of steals are rolled into a metal sheets. The problems in the | :02:12. | :02:17.
economy mean that the order books here are suffering. The mill of the | :02:17. | :02:20.
rigidly mothballed in 2009 and when it was brought back into operation | :02:20. | :02:25.
later that year, Tata Steel decided to adopt a more flexible way of | :02:25. | :02:30.
working the using agency staff and fixed-term contract workers. Today, | :02:30. | :02:34.
115 of them have been told that right now there is no work for them. | :02:34. | :02:39.
But the news was not a total surprise. The mill is capable of | :02:39. | :02:43.
8000 tonnes a day. Recently they have only been rolling 10,000 | :02:43. | :02:48.
tonnes per week. This is not unexpected. People are very worried, | :02:48. | :02:52.
they are running up to Christmas, they're worried about paying | :02:52. | :02:55.
Christmas bills and paying for Christmas in general. Then after | :02:56. | :03:00.
that, they have to pick up the pieces. The problems at Llanwern | :03:00. | :03:04.
are a direct result of the global economic crisis. The UK steel | :03:04. | :03:08.
industry is struggling. We have seen the world economy slowing down | :03:08. | :03:12.
and we have seen the forecast yesterday from the Office of | :03:12. | :03:15.
budgetary responsibility. Mervyn King in the Bank of England has | :03:15. | :03:20.
been talking about global issues and PCS an increase of unemployment | :03:20. | :03:26.
in Europe. Basically the export market for Britain is getting | :03:26. | :03:34.
smaller and smaller. Since Tata Steel bought Corus in 2007, the | :03:34. | :03:41.
steel industry in England has fluctuated. In October 2008, blast | :03:41. | :03:44.
furnace and number four was at mothballed at Port Talbot. Two | :03:45. | :03:49.
years later, 180 jobs were lost in Flintshire. And a couple of months | :03:49. | :03:54.
ago, production was halted for a week at its tinplate works. But | :03:54. | :04:00.
there have also been grounds for optimism. Tata Steel is investing | :04:00. | :04:04.
around 200 million in rebuilding a blast furnace for in Port Talbot. | :04:04. | :04:09.
This is a sign of the company's commitment in Wales. It says the | :04:09. | :04:13.
decision to mothball the hot mill at Llanwern was made with great | :04:13. | :04:18.
regret. They intend to bring it back into operation as soon as the | :04:18. | :04:22.
market improves. I do everything I can to drive the issue and raised | :04:22. | :04:26.
with ministers in Parliament. We have a meeting with ministers on | :04:26. | :04:30.
Monday. The Welsh government says it will provide what help it can to | :04:30. | :04:38.
the workers. A 30 day consultation period is now under way. | :04:38. | :04:45.
With me now is Dr Catherine Wald from Glamorgan business school. Why | :04:45. | :04:50.
has the rolling mill be mothballed now? The steel industry depends on | :04:50. | :04:54.
balancing carefully demand and supply. If there is overcapacity in | :04:54. | :04:59.
the industry, demand decreases and supplies stays consistent, it | :04:59. | :05:03.
drives down prices. Constantly there is a balance between demand | :05:03. | :05:09.
and supply. This year, the overall global demand for steel is still | :05:09. | :05:13.
set to be consistent or perhaps increase the little, but the | :05:13. | :05:19.
picture in Europe is different. The major increases in demand for steel | :05:19. | :05:24.
are in China, Korea, India. The European market is certainly not as | :05:24. | :05:29.
buoyant. In fact other manufacturers have been mothballing | :05:29. | :05:34.
plants, too, to try to create this balance between demand and supply. | :05:34. | :05:39.
Tata Steel say they are investing in Wales, but should be -- should | :05:39. | :05:46.
we be worried for the future of the steel industry he? Tata Steel had | :05:46. | :05:51.
shown consistently that they are making investments and those | :05:51. | :05:55.
investments are being made in troubled times. We took -- we | :05:55. | :05:59.
should take heart from those investments. But this market is | :05:59. | :06:08.
very volatile. The future is dependent on that. | :06:08. | :06:10.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed tonight | :06:10. | :06:13.
that it will investigate the destruction of evidence which led | :06:13. | :06:18.
to the collapse of the Lynnette White trial yesterday. Eight former | :06:18. | :06:20.
police officers were cleared of perverted the course of justice | :06:20. | :06:29.
after the wrongful conviction of three men for the word of -- murder | :06:29. | :06:38.
of Lynette White. This trial cost 30 million. It will not cost | :06:38. | :06:43.
anything like that. It is important to get at the trade because | :06:43. | :06:48.
innocent people went to prison. The whole thing has been catastrophic. | :06:48. | :06:51.
We must learn from these mistakes and be sure this does not happen in | :06:51. | :06:54.
future. The National Library in Aberystwyth | :06:54. | :06:59.
says it has no choice other than to accept a bequest from a man who | :06:59. | :07:02.
collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War. Louis Feutren | :07:02. | :07:06.
was a Breton nationalist who fought alongside the SS in France. He died | :07:06. | :07:12.
last year and left 300,000 to the library. | :07:12. | :07:17.
In an SS inspired uniform this is Louis Feutren, a Breton nationalist | :07:17. | :07:21.
who believe the siding with Germany against France was a way of | :07:21. | :07:24.
contributing to the future of Brittany and its language. He | :07:24. | :07:28.
fought alongside the SS as a 21 year old and retreated from friends | :07:28. | :07:33.
with the Nazis at the end of the year it -- the end of the war. | :07:33. | :07:42.
man, Louis Feutren, was one of the people who retreated with the | :07:42. | :07:48.
Germans. He then somehow found himself in Wales and we know that | :07:48. | :07:55.
he was in Wales Burghley in 1947. From Wales he made his way to | :07:55. | :07:59.
Ireland. He died there last year and in his will he left it | :07:59. | :08:02.
documents for the National Library's Celtic collection and | :08:02. | :08:06.
300,000. After delving into his history, the library found that his | :08:06. | :08:11.
money was not earned doing -- during his time at the SS. There | :08:11. | :08:16.
were no conditions attached to the request. Following legal advice, it | :08:16. | :08:22.
decided to accept in full. Lord Wheatley was the chairman of the | :08:22. | :08:29.
board to accepted this decision. Lord Whibley described the decision | :08:29. | :08:35.
has very difficult and stress that it was made on legal grounds First | :08:35. | :08:43.
--. According to the wealth government's heritage minister | :08:43. | :08:50.
these acceptance could damage the library's reputation. They would | :08:50. | :08:54.
have had to face the inquiries from the Charity Commissioners. | :08:54. | :08:59.
Charities are under an obligation to receive donations. The library | :08:59. | :09:02.
took nine months and received a detailed legal advice before making | :09:02. | :09:08.
a decision. Having done so and accepted the money, it now says | :09:08. | :09:13.
that a proportion of the 300,000 will go towards projects | :09:13. | :09:17.
highlighting the devastating effects of war and fascism. | :09:17. | :09:21.
Tomorrow, rugby fans across the country will have the last chance | :09:21. | :09:25.
to cheer on Shane Williams as he rare it -- wears the red jersey of | :09:25. | :09:33.
Wales. Let's go to where it all began for him. | :09:33. | :09:39.
There is no doubt that this man is an international rugby star. Here | :09:39. | :09:44.
he is most certainly a Local Hero, too. He started his career at 12 | :09:44. | :09:47.
years old. When he made his international debut more than in | :09:47. | :09:51.
seven years ago now, they made this banner for him. They have brought | :09:51. | :09:56.
it out once again for his final cap for Wales. Good luck messages have | :09:56. | :10:02.
been coming in from across the world of rugby. Shane Williams will | :10:02. | :10:06.
shine on the international stage for the last time. | :10:06. | :10:09.
One last training session before the big goodbye. Shane Williams are | :10:09. | :10:14.
still moves like a gangster, but he has decided at the age of 34 that | :10:14. | :10:18.
tomorrow will be his last game for Wales. A crowd had come to watch | :10:18. | :10:25.
today and typically, he was happy to share the moment. After tomorrow, | :10:25. | :10:29.
Wales will no longer be able to turn up to a man who has been a | :10:29. | :10:34.
country's principal attacking weapon for more than a decade. His | :10:34. | :10:40.
tries have one of trouble crowns. Not to mention a couple of grand | :10:40. | :10:49.
slams. 57 tries in 86 appearances is streets ahead of any other | :10:50. | :10:54.
wealth -- Welsh player in history. Tomorrow he will wear the red of | :10:54. | :11:00.
Wales for one last time. I do not usually cry. I could very well be | :11:00. | :11:04.
crying during the game and after the game, to be honest with you. It | :11:04. | :11:08.
is emotional. I get choked up thinking about it now it is getting | :11:08. | :11:12.
closer. It is going to be a great day, fantastic day, and a day I | :11:12. | :11:17.
will never forget. When he made his debut in 2000, there were glimpses | :11:17. | :11:23.
of what was to come. But later that month, wearing a shirt that looked | :11:23. | :11:28.
three sizes too big, he also scored his first try. But afterwards, no | :11:29. | :11:37.
one thought that he would become an all-time great. I do not want to | :11:37. | :11:41.
put in way up there where he is under too much pressure. 11 years | :11:41. | :11:46.
later, that view has been revised a little. He has been consistently | :11:46. | :11:50.
world-class. I looked to him to do something special and often he does | :11:50. | :11:58.
it. It is great that he is going to get that tribute. When many said | :11:58. | :12:02.
that he was too small, one person who always believed he could do it | :12:02. | :12:06.
was his mother. There will be no one prouder in the Millennium | :12:06. | :12:12.
Stadium tomorrow. It will be very emotional for everyone. Friends and | :12:12. | :12:16.
family are going. I have spoken to people locally and I think it will | :12:16. | :12:21.
be emotional for them as a. Wales management have tried to make | :12:22. | :12:27.
it a special week full him. He was also given the honour of announcing | :12:27. | :12:32.
that the team to his fellow players. Tomorrow, the squad will try to put | :12:32. | :12:37.
in motion to one side when they face Australia. Revenge would be | :12:37. | :12:46.
sweet. It will be disappointing if we do not win this weekend. At the | :12:46. | :12:49.
same time a lot of the motivation will be to send off Shane Williams | :12:49. | :12:55.
in the right way. The Australians know all about Shane, he scored | :12:55. | :13:01.
five tries against them in the World Cup. If he can do the same | :13:01. | :13:10.
again tomorrow, it would be a fitting way to say goodbye. | :13:10. | :13:14.
Let's talk to Martin Jones who was the club's secretary when Shane | :13:14. | :13:19.
Williams started out. You have a lock and a lot of tries over the | :13:19. | :13:29.
:13:29. | :13:32. | ||
years. The first game he had since returning to this team, which was a | :13:32. | :13:39.
midweek game, he scored four tries. You could see early on that this | :13:39. | :13:46.
was a talented player? We saw that when he was with the juniors | :13:46. | :13:50.
playing for the under 12. There was something about him that stood out | :13:50. | :13:58.
from the rest. Since, he has become a world-class player. How proud I | :13:58. | :14:02.
knew that a player from this club has gone on to achieve so much? | :14:02. | :14:11.
are extremely proud. We are very proud that a local boy has done | :14:11. | :14:16.
well, really well. Will tomorrow be an emotional day for many here at | :14:16. | :14:25.
the club? It is an emotional day. It draws an end to end the era of a | :14:25. | :14:32.
brilliant rugby player. And still lives. And we will be sorry to see | :14:32. | :14:37.
him depart tomorrow. It is better to go on your own time without | :14:37. | :14:44.
being shoved out by the coach. is going out on the top. Yes. | :14:44. | :14:54.
will be more from us later on. Still to come. The school boy she | :14:54. | :15:02.
also drives the school bus. First, carers across Wales the say | :15:02. | :15:06.
the money worries are leaving them ill and a radical reform of | :15:06. | :15:11.
benefits is needed to stop them falling into poverty. On Carers' | :15:11. | :15:15.
Rights Day some say they are facing a bleak future. | :15:15. | :15:20.
Carol Harrison is a full-time carer to her daughter who is 46. Now she | :15:21. | :15:24.
is a pensioner, she cannot claim a carer's allowance. She is dreading | :15:24. | :15:34.
the future. I hate going shopping. Now we trudge round three or four | :15:34. | :15:39.
supermarkets to shoppers wisely as we can. Heating wires, we have cut | :15:39. | :15:42.
back. We used to put the central heating on at any time and we no | :15:42. | :15:50.
longer do that. Our own little bit of savings that we had, that we | :15:50. | :15:53.
manage to scrape together over the years, has just gone down and down | :15:53. | :15:59.
and down. She is not alone. A survey of over 300 carers in Wales | :15:59. | :16:07.
and heating to make ends meet. Four in 10 said that caring has pushed | :16:07. | :16:11.
them into the red. But more than half said that they were suffering | :16:11. | :16:17.
anxiety and depression because of concerns about finances. Carers are | :16:17. | :16:20.
coming together for one of a series of conferences being held across | :16:20. | :16:28.
Wales. They are trying to address the issues facing them by raising | :16:28. | :16:33.
awareness. The question and answer session revealed that what they | :16:33. | :16:43.
:16:43. | :16:43. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 64 seconds | :16:43. | :17:47.
fear most is the cuts to their I think my choice of language was | :17:47. | :17:51.
poor and I apologise if I have offended people. I regret doing | :17:51. | :18:01.
:18:01. | :18:01. | ||
that. I also regret the fact that I detracted from the main issue. | :18:01. | :18:03.
Swansea's historic Hafod copperworks site is to open to the | :18:03. | :18:07.
public after securing a grant of more than half a million pounds. | :18:07. | :18:12.
The money from Welsh heritage body, Cadw, will be used to restore some | :18:12. | :18:16.
of the tourist trails. The National Trust has signed an | :18:16. | :18:20.
agreement with the port city council to take over the running of | :18:20. | :18:24.
to be a house. The 17th century mansion along with 90 acres of | :18:24. | :18:27.
gardens will be managed by the charity on a 50 year lease starting | :18:27. | :18:33.
next year. European football bosses have paid | :18:33. | :18:36.
tribute to Gary Speed at the draw for the Euro 2012 competition. They | :18:36. | :18:40.
described him as one of the most popular characters of the game. The | :18:40. | :18:44.
Wales manager was found dead at his home on Sunday. More tributes will | :18:44. | :18:49.
be paid at football grounds across the country tomorrow. The lead | :18:49. | :18:54.
singer of the Stereophonics, Kelly Jones, has recorded a special | :18:54. | :19:02.
version of the adopted Welsh anthem in tribute to hems. -- in a tribute | :19:02. | :19:09.
to him. The song will feature in tonight's | :19:09. | :19:16.
programme will look back at Gary Speed's life and career. That is at | :19:16. | :19:21.
10pm on BBC Two Wales. Swansea will look to build on their | :19:21. | :19:26.
recent good form when they take on bottom club, Blackburn, in the | :19:26. | :19:36.
:19:36. | :19:46. | ||
Back to the rugby. When you walk around this part of | :19:46. | :19:50.
Wales there is only one thing on people's mind, that is the bigger | :19:50. | :19:54.
game tomorrow. That is Shane Williams final appearance for Wales. | :19:54. | :19:59.
Let us hear from the man himself. He will tell us about his first | :19:59. | :20:09.
:20:09. | :20:14. | ||
Even now when I look back, I can't get over it. I was petrified on | :20:14. | :20:20.
that day. It was an adventure playing for Neath at first. I | :20:20. | :20:28.
really wanted to play for Neath and get in the side. It was hard work. | :20:28. | :20:33.
I worked my socks off and battled against adversity. I was playing | :20:33. | :20:39.
against players twice as strong as I was and bigger than myself. I was | :20:39. | :20:47.
getting thrown around like a rag doll. It was tougher. I worked hard. | :20:47. | :20:51.
I still was not big enough when I played for Wales, looking back. I | :20:51. | :20:58.
looked like one of the ball boys! It would be great to go out with a | :20:58. | :21:03.
win. I just can't wait for the day now. It's going to be a good day | :21:03. | :21:10.
and I can't wait to see all my friends. It is going to be a great | :21:10. | :21:16.
day. But we have to win the game thirst. Any idea how you will feel | :21:16. | :21:26.
:21:26. | :21:28. | ||
when you get onto the field? They will be tears before, during and | :21:28. | :21:34.
after the game. It is going to be emotional. I just want to go out | :21:34. | :21:41.
and play some rugby. I want to put in a big performance. It will be a | :21:42. | :21:45.
tough game. Australia are one of the best teams in the world. It is | :21:45. | :21:50.
all about winning first and foremost. I am going to enjoy the | :21:50. | :21:54.
experience. There is no better place to play than the Millennium | :21:54. | :21:57.
Stadium. Let's talk to some of the club | :21:57. | :22:03.
members. You are the club president. You know Shane Williams. He told me | :22:03. | :22:09.
earlier that fame has not changed him. It has not. He is exactly like | :22:09. | :22:16.
one of the boys. We watch him playing for the Ospreys on a | :22:16. | :22:19.
Saturday afternoon and within half- an-hour of the game finishing, he | :22:19. | :22:29.
is back here with the boys sitting in the corner and enjoying himself. | :22:29. | :22:33.
There will be plenty of people heading to the Millennium Stadium | :22:33. | :22:39.
tomorrow. We are immensely proud of him. We have three buses going up | :22:39. | :22:46.
tomorrow morning. We wish him all the very best tomorrow. Hopefully, | :22:46. | :22:54.
he finishes with a try. You trained Shane Williams when he was just 12. | :22:55. | :23:00.
What was special about him back then? You could see the way he | :23:00. | :23:04.
played and his attitude, he used to do things that other players could | :23:04. | :23:14.
:23:14. | :23:15. | ||
only dream of. He was exceptional. He was sensational. He started here | :23:15. | :23:20.
and got spotted. He was outstanding in the first team. It did not take | :23:20. | :23:30.
:23:30. | :23:31. | ||
him long to go to Neath. I remember going to watch him play for Neath | :23:31. | :23:39.
and he had stepped up a gear or two. Thank you very much. Not long to go | :23:39. | :23:47.
now until kick-off. There is commentary on a BBC Radio Wales and | :23:47. | :23:52.
the game is live on BBC One Wales. We will have all the reaction to | :23:52. | :23:57.
the game throughout the weekend. The bus driver at one | :23:57. | :24:00.
Carmarthenshire school is a very familiar face to students. He's one | :24:00. | :24:02.
of the sixth formers. This summer, 18-year-old Joseff Edwards passed | :24:03. | :24:07.
the test to drive a 54-seater coach. So he now does the school run to | :24:07. | :24:10.
Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland, getting 20 a day from the coach | :24:10. | :24:19.
company, run by his dad. It is a big responsibility to drive | :24:19. | :24:22.
everybody to school. They have to be safe and I have to get them | :24:22. | :24:31.
there safely. I have to make sure they are all well behaved. Somebody | :24:31. | :24:34.
has seen a bus going through woodland with a school pupil | :24:34. | :24:38.
driving a coach and I thought that somebody must have stolen the bus | :24:38. | :24:45.
or whatever. The police did come up here to check if it was a pupil and | :24:45. | :24:49.
I said it was but he has passed his test. | :24:49. | :24:59.
:24:59. | :25:01. | ||
And now the weather. How is it The rain will clear, leaving a | :25:01. | :25:04.
drier and breezy weekend. It will turn colder on Sunday with a few | :25:04. | :25:09.
showers. Tonight, wet and windy. Some heavy rain. Turning drier | :25:09. | :25:13.
later with a few showers. Fresh to strong winds and a milder than last | :25:13. | :25:17.
night. Temperatures staying well above freezing. Now, by the morning | :25:17. | :25:21.
the rain will have cleared, so a dry start for most of us. And no | :25:21. | :25:25.
frost on the car. Cloudy in the west with a few light showers. | :25:25. | :25:28.
Breezy on the coast with a temperature of 7C in Caernarfon. So | :25:28. | :25:35.
plenty of dry weather tomorrow. A few bright intervals. The best of | :25:35. | :25:37.
the sunshine in Powys, Monmouthshire and the Marches. | :25:37. | :25:40.
Cloudy in parts of the north and west with a few light showers | :25:40. | :25:43.
feeding in off the Irish Sea. Top temperatures around 9C to 11C and | :25:44. | :25:46.
it'll be breezy. If you're in Cardiff for the rugby tomorrow | :25:46. | :25:48.
afternoon, it should be dry. Temperatures around 11C. Sunday | :25:49. | :25:52.
will be colder with a mixture of cloud, sunshine and a few showers. | :25:52. | :25:55.
Most of the showers in the north and west. Wintry on the mountains | :25:55. | :25:58.
with a little snow. By the way, Cartref PorthKerry in Barry are | :25:58. | :26:00.
having their Christmas Fair tomorrow. Everyone is welcome and | :26:00. | :26:04.
it should be dry. Too Good To Waste are holding a charity event in | :26:04. | :26:06.
Aberaman tomorrow. So pop along and pick-up some bargains for Christmas. | :26:07. | :26:10.
Into next week, Monday will be cold and windy with sunshine and showers. | :26:10. | :26:13.
The showers falling as hail, sleet and snow. Most of the snow on | :26:13. | :26:15.
higher ground, the hills and mountains. Now looking back, the | :26:16. | :26:19.
autumn was very mild. In fact, it was the joint warmest with 2006 | :26:19. | :26:24.
since records began over 100 years ago. It was also drier than average. | :26:24. | :26:27.
So some people will be hoping for lots of rain this winter, | :26:27. | :26:30.
especially on the border with England, to replenish ground water | :26:30. | :26:36.
levels and top up the streams. Some rain tonight, but drier over the | :26:36. | :26:40.
weekend. A few showers and it will be breezy. I've had a few Christmas | :26:40. | :26:44.
pictures in the post but we'd like some more. Here's the address to | :26:44. | :26:47.
send them. Derek's Pictures, Wales Today, Cardiff, CF5 2YQ. I hope to | :26:47. | :26:57.

Tonight's main news. The Prime Minister has promised to protect | :27:10. | :27:14.
Britain's interests as the German Chancellor unveiled her plans to | :27:14. | :27:19.
read right the use treaty and asked for greater control over spending | :27:19. | :27:28.
