Good evening. Construction workers could be at risk because of a fall

in the number of inspections being made to building sites. That's

according to a union. Figures obtained by BBC Wales show spot

checks by the Health and Safety Executive were down more than a

third in the last financial year. Sachin Krishnan reports.

The construction industry employs close to 90,000 people across Wales

and spot checks on building sites are seen as a way of keeping

employers on their toes. The Health and Safety Executive made 529

inspections in the last financial year but that is down from more than

800 the year before. It has prompted one union to say it fears rogue

builders will have licence to operate outside of the rules.

Another union, the Federation of Master Builders, says a licensing

system is needed to keep employees in check. There is nothing stopping

my grandmother setting up as a builder, and making alterations to

People's house. In the first instance, there is nothing stopping

from doing that. In our opinion, that is not right. The Health and

Safety Executive say their inspections have become more

targeted and smarter and the number of accidents has been reduced. With

budgets tighter, the age of bank it investigations is over.

Up to 50 homes were evacuated in Merthyr Tydfil earlier, after the

discovery of a suspect device in the street. South Wales Police cordoned

off an area around Heol Tai Mawr in Gellideg, just after 1pm. Roads in

the area were closed, with residents moved to Aberfan leisure centre.

Bomb disposal teams have now left the scene.

Special prayers will be held tomorrow morning at a Catholic

church in Pontyberem for Eliza-Mae Mullane, the six-day-old baby girl

who died at her home in the village on Tuesday. Dyfed-Powys Police

seized the family's Alaskan Malamute dog after her death. They've

described it as a sensitive inquiry, which could take some time.

Two men who ransacked the home of Swansea City's head coach Garry Monk

during a crime spree of more than 30 burglaries are beginning jail terms

totalling ten years. Ben Llewellyn, and James Green, who are both from

Morriston, admitted offences dating back to 2002. Monk's home in Killay

was raided in November last year while he was recovering from knee

surgery. It's been another bad day for

Cardiff City. They're still one place from the bottom of the Premier

League after being thrashed 4-0 at home against Hull City. The result,

against one of the other teams near the foot of the table, is a blow to

the Bluebirds' chances of avoiding relegation. You cannot find any

positives when you lose 4-0 against a team that is as about the same

position as you, especially when we dominated, created chances. These

other games need points for. Elsewhere today, Newport County were

beaten 1-0 at home by Cheltenham in League Two. And, in the Conference,

it was the same for Wrexham, who were beaten 1-0 by Barnet at the

Racecourse. On to rugby and there was one match

today in the Pro12. With many of their star players away on Six

Nations duty, the Scarlets ran in three tries to beat Edinburgh by 25

points to 21. The Welsh side are sixth in the Pro12 table.

At the Winter Olympics, Bruce Tasker from Manorbier in Pembrokeshire is

competing in the Great Britain four-man bobsleigh team. They went

into the Games as an outside chance for a medal. They've finished the

first of the four runs in tenth place.

the brighter day of the weekend, turning wet and very windy tomorrow.

Fairly cloudy tonight, outbreaks of light, patchy rain, spreading

eastwards across Wales on and off. The wind picks up overnight, and

furtively mild. It has more unsettled tomorrow as a low pressure

system pushes this weather system in from the Atlantic. Berry windy with

coastal gales, gusts of 60 or 70 miles an hour. Cloudy with outbreaks

of rain, the rain heaviest in the North West. Light rain in the

shoulder of high ground further east. Highs of ten or 12 Celsius.

The rain should clear to sunshine and showers on Monday but wet and

windy again by Monday night. After a mixed weekend, further rain,

blustery showers but also some sunny spells to come next week.
