Good evening. A blast at the Gleision mine in Cil-y-bebyll, near | :00:00. | :00:22.
Pontardawe, caused 650,000 gallons of water, to pour through a section | :00:23. | :00:29.
where four miners were killed. Swansea Crown Court heard explosives | :00:30. | :00:32.
at the pit opened a path for the water from old mine workings. The | :00:33. | :00:35.
pit manager denies manslaughter through gross negligence, while the | :00:36. | :00:38.
operators deny corporate manslaughter. Cemlyn Davies was in | :00:39. | :00:48.
court. The Gleision mine, the aftermath of | :00:49. | :00:51.
the disaster. In court today, the prosecution gave their explanation | :00:52. | :00:54.
for how the tragic events of September 2011 unfolded. Greg Taylor | :00:55. | :00:58.
QC said the colliers were mining towards old workings where it was | :00:59. | :01:03.
known there was underground water. On the day before the incident, the | :01:04. | :01:07.
miners drilled a hole in the wall. The water that trickled through was | :01:08. | :01:11.
compared to the flow of a tap, half turned on. By the following morning, | :01:12. | :01:16.
the wall was said to be moist with just a minimal amount of water still | :01:17. | :01:19.
trickling through. The prosecution said this was because sediment had | :01:20. | :01:23.
blocked the hole, hiding a body of water that had built up over nearly | :01:24. | :01:30.
30 years. And, so, when the wall was later breached, 650,000 gallons of | :01:31. | :01:33.
water poured through at a rate of 21 miles an hour, filling the area | :01:34. | :01:37.
where the men were working within seconds. Garry Jenkins, Philip Hill, | :01:38. | :01:43.
David Powell, and Charles Breslin were all caught in its path. All | :01:44. | :01:51.
four died as a result of drowning. The court heard that mine rescuers | :01:52. | :01:55.
arrived at Gleision at around half past ten that morning. But because | :01:56. | :02:01.
of the water they weren't able to reach the men until the following | :02:02. | :02:05.
day. Members of the men's families wept as they heard details of how | :02:06. | :02:08.
their loved ones were found, covered in silks. --silt. The jury heard | :02:09. | :02:13.
that in accordance with industry regulations, the miners should have | :02:14. | :02:16.
been 100 metres away from the explosives on the coal face when | :02:17. | :02:20.
they were detonated. But that wasn't the case. And the court heard that | :02:21. | :02:27.
on a daily basis, the colliers would only withdraw by maybe 30 metres. | :02:28. | :02:30.
The prosecution said that had they abided by the regulations, they | :02:31. | :02:33.
would have been outside the section of the mine where they were working | :02:34. | :02:37.
and perhaps as the roadway, and a means of escape. Malcolm Fifield sat | :02:38. | :02:42.
alongside his wife as the prosecution said he had overall | :02:43. | :02:44.
responsibility for what happened in the mine. And despite knowing they | :02:45. | :02:49.
were close to breaking through to the old workings, no special risk | :02:50. | :02:53.
assessment had been carried out. However, the jury also heard he was | :02:54. | :02:57.
known within the industry as a safety conscious manager. Mr Fifield | :02:58. | :03:03.
denies four counts of manslaughter through gross negligence. And the | :03:04. | :03:15.
mine operators, MNS Mining deny charges of corporate manslaughter. | :03:16. | :03:17.
The trial will continue on Monda Police have confirmed tonight a body | :03:18. | :03:20.
found in marshland in Newport yesterday is that of the missing | :03:21. | :03:23.
teenager Nida Naseer. The 19-year-old disappeared three | :03:24. | :03:28.
months ago. Officers say they aren't now looking for anyone else in | :03:29. | :03:31.
connection with her death. Students at Coleg Gwent, where Nida had been | :03:32. | :03:34.
studying, say they're shocked and sad. | :03:35. | :03:37.
I just can't believe it's happened to a normal college girl. Like, she | :03:38. | :03:41.
was very kind, loving. You know, she was a very nice friend, and all | :03:42. | :03:45.
that. And that goes and happens to her. It is terrible. It shouldn't | :03:46. | :03:49.
happen. The teachers were very sad. And... The whole school was... | :03:50. | :03:58.
Upset. The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, has | :03:59. | :04:01.
arrived in Llandudno, ahead of Welsh Labour's annual conference. He'll be | :04:02. | :04:03.
addressing delegates tomorrow. Meanwhile, the First Minister has | :04:04. | :04:06.
accused the Conservatives of waging "a war on Wales." Carwyn Jones says | :04:07. | :04:10.
recent attacks from the Tories have not been focused on the Welsh | :04:11. | :04:13.
government, but on the country as a whole. | :04:14. | :04:17.
Firefighters tackling a huge blaze at a recycling centre on the | :04:18. | :04:20.
outskirts of Cardiff say it'll take days to deal with. 2,000 tonnes of | :04:21. | :04:25.
waste caught fire in the early hours of this morning, and smoke spread | :04:26. | :04:29.
across parts of the city. More than 70 firefighters were involved. | :04:30. | :04:35.
Every year, the National Eisteddfod showcases art work from across the | :04:36. | :04:38.
country, with the help of ?75,000 of public money. But BBC Wales has | :04:39. | :04:46.
learnt the Arts Council, which distributes the cash, has raised | :04:47. | :04:49.
concerns about the standard of work that was shown last year, and is | :04:50. | :04:53.
looking again at the grant. Our arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas | :04:54. | :05:00.
reports. At work in his studio, this man | :05:01. | :05:04.
prepares his latest paintings. A professional artist for more than 20 | :05:05. | :05:09.
years, he is also a previous gold-medal winner at the | :05:10. | :05:14.
Eisteddfod's exhibition, Y Lle Celf. And while some say that standards | :05:15. | :05:18.
have dropped, he thinks the criticism is unfair. I think if you | :05:19. | :05:22.
put your stuff in, then you should be shown, if you are good enough. | :05:23. | :05:27.
Some years are better than others, and maybe that is what this is | :05:28. | :05:31.
about. I didn't think it was that bad. It is just somebody's point of | :05:32. | :05:40.
view. I disagree with it, I suppose. The Y Lle Celf is often | :05:41. | :05:44.
controversial, bringing modern art to the heart of the traditional | :05:45. | :05:48.
Eisteddfod field. It remains one of the most popular attractions, away | :05:49. | :05:51.
from the main competitions. But after last you's exhibition, some | :05:52. | :05:56.
buzz of the Arts Council expressed particular disappointment with the | :05:57. | :05:59.
standard of the exhibition and there are concerns that too many young | :06:00. | :06:04.
artists are being selected. There was a feeling that this was somehow | :06:05. | :06:10.
more superficial, that it didn't engage as much is maybe previous | :06:11. | :06:14.
ones, but there will always be talk about the nature of the exhibition | :06:15. | :06:21.
is that emerges. The talk after last year's show initially centred on | :06:22. | :06:25.
this, the gold medal winning artwork by Josephine Sowden, controversial | :06:26. | :06:27.
because her broken words are spoken in English. Yet, it won the Welsh | :06:28. | :06:30.
language festival's highest art prize. It's not known which works | :06:31. | :06:34.
the Council members felt were below par last year. But their | :06:35. | :06:39.
dissatisfaction is clear. The minutes of an Arts Council meeting | :06:40. | :06:42.
after last year's Eisteddfod said there needed to be... | :06:43. | :06:49.
Their concerns about standards were still in evidence at another meeting | :06:50. | :06:53.
in December when the artistic direction of the Y Lle Celf was | :06:54. | :06:57.
asked to be made a condition of its ?75,000 grant. But the Eisteddfod | :06:58. | :07:00.
says none of these concerns have been raised with them and there are | :07:01. | :07:04.
no plans to change the exhibition. Well, artistic direction hasn't | :07:05. | :07:07.
been... Something that's been touched upon with the visual arts. | :07:08. | :07:13.
As far as the... Selected exhibition is concerned, it is up to the three | :07:14. | :07:20.
selectors... There haven't been any themes or categories since 1992. For | :07:21. | :07:25.
over 20 years. The current plans mean that the Y Lle Celf returns as | :07:26. | :07:29.
usual in August without the changes that the Arts Council has called | :07:30. | :07:33.
for. Rugby, and a major blow to the | :07:34. | :07:37.
Ospreys' hopes of reaching the play-offs. They lost 11-9 in Glasgow | :07:38. | :07:41.
tonight. Dan Biggar kicked all the points for the Welsh side, while | :07:42. | :07:44.
Glasgow's Tommy Seymour crossed for the only try of the game. | :07:45. | :07:50.
Napoli Football Club has been fined more than ?20,000 after hundreds of | :07:51. | :07:53.
Swansea City fans missed the start of their Europa League match in | :07:54. | :07:57.
February. Swansea City said fans, who were being escorted on buses to | :07:58. | :08:00.
the ground, suffered "unnecessary and deplorable delays." | :08:01. | :08:06.
Well, a pleasant weekend ahead for many, here's Sue Charles with the | :08:07. | :08:14.
weather details. After a chilly day, things are going | :08:15. | :08:20.
to turn dry and warm this weekend. Tonight, further heavy showers on | :08:21. | :08:25.
and off, they start to ease overnight, turning drier and not as | :08:26. | :08:31.
cold as recent nights. It is a milder weekend, thanks to a change | :08:32. | :08:35.
in wind direction from a chilly easterly to a southeasterly, drawing | :08:36. | :08:40.
up warm air from the continent. Warm showers in the South and West clear | :08:41. | :08:45.
and cloud will break up readily, similar for the rest of the UK. | :08:46. | :08:50.
Showers could linger in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but elsewhere, it | :08:51. | :08:55.
will be a fine day. Increasing amounts of sunshine, and those winds | :08:56. | :08:59.
bringing temperatures up to the mid to high teens for most of us, but | :09:00. | :09:05.
cooler in Scotland, especially along the North Sea coasts. It remains | :09:06. | :09:10.
quite breezy across Wales, particularly in the hills. | :09:11. | :09:12.
Temperatures rising, could easily reach the high teens along the then | :09:13. | :09:18.
Bishop Coast. Saturday into Sunday, this front is always close by so we | :09:19. | :09:22.
could see a few showers sneaking back in further west, but most | :09:23. | :09:28.
people staying dry. Sunday is dry and bright, warm, hazy sunshine, it | :09:29. | :09:33.
might cloud over at times, further west, and the odd chance of some | :09:34. | :09:38.
rain, Stein dry for most, though, with temperatures from mid to high | :09:39. | :09:49.
teens. Plenty of dry and the -- plenty of dry weather, warm, | :09:50. | :09:55.
springlike, timely because the clocks are going forward this | :09:56. | :10:00.
weekend. That is all from us here. Have a great weekend. Goodbye. | :10:01. | :10:03. |
