Good evening. The parents of a baby girl who was killed by a pet dog say | :00:19. | :00:24.
they hope awareness will be raised about the potential dangers of | :00:25. | :00:28.
having dogs around young children. An inquest heard how six-day-old | :00:29. | :00:31.
Eliza-Mae Mullane suffered a serious head injury when she was bitten at | :00:32. | :00:36.
her home in Pontyberem. The coroner today ruled her death in February | :00:37. | :00:40.
was accidental. Cemlyn Davies was at the inquest. | :00:41. | :00:49.
They dearly loved daughter who will always be in our hearts, that is how | :00:50. | :00:56.
Eliza-Mae described their baby girl following her tragic death. Today, | :00:57. | :01:02.
Sharon John and Patrick Mullane arrived for the inquest. The hearing | :01:03. | :01:10.
lasted just a few minutes and Eliza-Mae's mother wept as details | :01:11. | :01:13.
of that February morning were read out. The inquest heard how Sharon | :01:14. | :01:19.
John had been feeding Eliza-Mae when a taxi pulled up outside their home | :01:20. | :01:25.
to take her son to school. She put Eliza-Mae to sleep in her cot and | :01:26. | :01:30.
closed the living room door. When she returned to the lounge just a | :01:31. | :01:34.
short while later, Sharon John found one of the family dogs had forced | :01:35. | :01:40.
its way into the room and Eliza-Mae was on the floor, clearly having | :01:41. | :01:43.
suffered a serious head injury. The inquest heard a dog had pulled her | :01:44. | :01:50.
from the cot and beaten her. Eliza-Mae was taken to the | :01:51. | :01:52.
University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where she was pronounced | :01:53. | :01:57.
dead. The cause of death was given as compression of the school with | :01:58. | :02:01.
intracranial bleeding. Initially, the investigation seemed to focus on | :02:02. | :02:08.
a dog like this one but a collie cross was also seized. The inquest | :02:09. | :02:13.
did not hear which dog was responsible, but non-had ever shown | :02:14. | :02:21.
any signs of aggression. Both have been put down. The coroner said that | :02:22. | :02:25.
the baby died as a result of an accident and there was no way her | :02:26. | :02:29.
mother could possibly have foreseen what happened. In a statement, | :02:30. | :02:32.
Eliza-Mae's father said he hopes... To reason is a dog behaviour wrist | :02:33. | :02:55.
who advises parents on how to keep children safe when there is a dog in | :02:56. | :03:00.
the house. The most important thing is for parents to understand dog | :03:01. | :03:05.
behaviour and to understand the very subtle signs sometimes that dogs are | :03:06. | :03:09.
giving to say they're not comfortable around the baby or they | :03:10. | :03:13.
are not sure how to behave. Eliza-Mae was less than a week old | :03:14. | :03:17.
when she was taken from her parents. Now they are hoping her | :03:18. | :03:21.
death can help ensure that no other family suffers in the same way. | :03:22. | :03:26.
European funding paid to Pembrokeshire Council to help | :03:27. | :03:29.
revitalise two of its towns has been suspended tonight. It comes after | :03:30. | :03:33.
the scheme was linked to a police investigation into allegations of | :03:34. | :03:36.
fraud. Councillors will meet on Monday to discuss the matter. More | :03:37. | :03:41.
from our business correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :03:42. | :03:46.
European grants have been available to help develop buildings including | :03:47. | :03:53.
shop fronts like these in Pembroke. Local government adviser says they | :03:54. | :03:58.
have had a huge impact on the town. A lot of these properties were in | :03:59. | :04:01.
disrepair and as you can see, there are a lot of properties which have | :04:02. | :04:08.
had a massive face uplift and the town is starting to look up for | :04:09. | :04:14.
itself. But concerns were raised for the grant for this building. The | :04:15. | :04:21.
funds can only be used for businesses, not residential | :04:22. | :04:24.
properties, so it can be spent on the office on the ground floor but | :04:25. | :04:29.
not the flat above. The police have confirmed they are investigating an | :04:30. | :04:32.
allegation of fraud made by the council. The Welsh government says | :04:33. | :04:37.
as a precautionary measure, European fund payments to Pembrokeshire | :04:38. | :04:39.
Council for the commercial property grant scheme have been suspended | :04:40. | :04:45.
while a review takes place. The opposition on the council argues | :04:46. | :04:48.
that something has gone badly wrong with the monitoring of grants. Towns | :04:49. | :04:53.
like Pembroke do not desperately need inward investment to get them | :04:54. | :04:57.
back to being a vibrant town centre environment. It is a great scheme. | :04:58. | :05:03.
-- they do desperately need inward investment. Documents have | :05:04. | :05:19.
apparently been shown which show a ?71,000 grant for the building and | :05:20. | :05:25.
investigation. Also an individual received a grant of ?1.4 million for | :05:26. | :05:33.
properties across the council. These buildings, though, are not under | :05:34. | :05:37.
suspicion. The council confirmed that they have referred a leg | :05:38. | :05:46.
hilarity is -- irregularities to the police. The suspension of European | :05:47. | :05:50.
grants will be discussed here at the council headquarters on Monday, but | :05:51. | :05:55.
what is important is what this means for businesses in Pembroke and | :05:56. | :06:00.
Pembroke Dock. Two companies have pleaded guilty to | :06:01. | :06:03.
breaching safety laws, over the death of five-year-old Karolina | :06:04. | :06:06.
Golabek, who was crushed by an electric gate in Bridgend. She | :06:07. | :06:09.
became trapped as it closed on her, back in July 2010. John Glen | :06:10. | :06:12.
Installation Services and Tremorfa Limited admitted health and safety | :06:13. | :06:14.
offences. They're due to be sentenced in June. | :06:15. | :06:20.
The Welsh Ambulance service has seen an increased number of calls this | :06:21. | :06:23.
week after record levels of air pollution. The Trust has seen a 10% | :06:24. | :06:26.
increase in calls relating to breathing problems and chest pains | :06:27. | :06:29.
compared with the previous four weeks. It's believed the sudden rise | :06:30. | :06:33.
in pollution is down to dust blown over from the Sahara Desert in | :06:34. | :06:40.
Africa. The leader of the Welsh Liberal | :06:41. | :06:44.
Democrats has stressed how vital it is to Wales that the UK remains in | :06:45. | :06:47.
the European Union. Kirsty Williams was speaking ahead of the party's | :06:48. | :06:50.
annual conference in Newport this weekend. With European elections | :06:51. | :06:53.
next month, the party wants to highlight how important staying in | :06:54. | :07:01.
the EU is for Welsh jobs. Let's be clear, in Wales, one in ten | :07:02. | :07:07.
Welsh jobs are directly linked to trading with our European partners | :07:08. | :07:11.
and I think people want to hear the arguments about why Wales and the UK | :07:12. | :07:15.
as a whole should be part of Europe, and Nick Clegg and the | :07:16. | :07:18.
Liberal Democrats are the only party willing to take on the challenge. | :07:19. | :07:24.
A burglar has been sentenced for trying to make his getaway from an | :07:25. | :07:28.
AM's home in a car with the politician's picture and name on it. | :07:29. | :07:31.
The Conservative Assembly Member Byron Davies uses the black cab for | :07:32. | :07:34.
political duties. Today 32-year-old Patrick O'Brien, from Swansea, was | :07:35. | :07:37.
jailed for six years after admitting a number of offences including | :07:38. | :07:43.
burglary. The most famous steeple chase in the | :07:44. | :07:46.
world takes place tomorrow afternoon, and a horse based here in | :07:47. | :07:50.
Wales is the favourite. Teaforthree is trained by Rebecca Curtis in | :07:51. | :07:52.
Pembrokeshire, and the 34-year-old says the Grand National is the race | :07:53. | :07:54.
every trainer wants to win. I hope he likes the rain because it | :07:55. | :08:04.
could be a bit wet at Aintree tomorrow. | :08:05. | :08:12.
Yes, it a wet weekend. It is staying mild but it will be windy. But not | :08:13. | :08:21.
as windy as earlier on in the year. Through tonight, the rain making its | :08:22. | :08:26.
way in from the South West. Hill fog around as well. Temperatures down to | :08:27. | :08:31.
about six Celsius. The breeze picks up. Tomorrow morning, a cloudy | :08:32. | :08:36.
start. It could linger on well into the afternoon and outbreaks of rain | :08:37. | :08:41.
throughout the day. So the rain making its way in from the South | :08:42. | :08:45.
West. For the rest of the UK, the rain is confined to western parts. | :08:46. | :08:50.
It is making its way northwards and eastwards. Parts of the South East | :08:51. | :08:54.
enjoyed the brighter weather. Maybe some hints of brightness with highs | :08:55. | :08:59.
of 16. Here, the rain will continue on and off in the afternoon | :09:00. | :09:03.
tomorrow. And higher ground we could see him of brightness but it will be | :09:04. | :09:09.
limited. Remaining blustery through tomorrow. Tomorrow night, the next | :09:10. | :09:13.
weather system making its way in from the West. Coastal fog and hill | :09:14. | :09:18.
fog continued but at least it is fairly mild. Temperatures in double | :09:19. | :09:22.
figures for all of us into the early hours of Sunday morning. A | :09:23. | :09:27.
disappointing start to Sunday. Wet and windy conditions. Moderate or | :09:28. | :09:32.
fresh south-westerly wind. But by the afternoon, bright and drier | :09:33. | :09:36.
weather from Anglesey right down to Pembrokeshire, and just a few | :09:37. | :09:39.
showers following on behind the rain band. Another weather system is | :09:40. | :09:45.
bringing rain through Monday. Then hopefully a ridge of high pressure | :09:46. | :09:49.
building towards the middle of next week so things will settle down. | :09:50. | :09:58.
Back at 6:50pm tomorrow. Have a great weekend. | :09:59. | :10:01. |
