Mike Wooldridge, BBC News, Lahore. There's more throughout the evening | :00:00. | 3:59:59
on the Good evening. The leader of the | :00:00. | :00:15.
Welsh Conservatives has given his strongest indication yet that he's | :00:16. | :00:18.
willing to work with the other parties in the Assembly. He told his | :00:19. | :00:21.
party's annual conference in Llangollen that Wales needs a | :00:22. | :00:24.
coalition of ideas to tackle the problems its facing. Andrew RT | :00:25. | :00:31.
Davies has been speed dating. This session at the conference was | :00:32. | :00:34.
designed to come up with new policies. But is he ready to deal | :00:35. | :00:38.
with another party in the Assembly in order to challenge Labour? It | :00:39. | :00:43.
appears he may well be after he spoke of building a coalition of | :00:44. | :00:54.
ideas in his maiden speech. -- main speech. Later, he was asked what | :00:55. | :00:58.
that meant. It means reaching out to anyone who has the best interests of | :00:59. | :01:02.
the people of Wales at heart and wants to get us off the bottom of | :01:03. | :01:05.
the league table, whether it be health, education or the economy. | :01:06. | :01:08.
Rather than this overlording mentality that Labour have which is | :01:09. | :01:11.
to extinguish any sort of freethinking or alternative. It | :01:12. | :01:15.
didn't sound much like Andrew RT Davies was trying to reach out | :01:16. | :01:18.
during his speech today. He accused the Liberal Democrats of not knowing | :01:19. | :01:21.
what they stand for and accused Plaid of wanting to break up the UK. | :01:22. | :01:26.
But we are told reaching out is what he was trying to do. Behind it all, | :01:27. | :01:31.
of course, is the realisation that if the opposition parties are going | :01:32. | :01:34.
to threaten Labour at the Assembly they need to work together. | :01:35. | :01:39.
Earlier, the Welsh Secretary David Jones renewed the main theme of the | :01:40. | :01:42.
conference by attacking the record of the Welsh government. This time, | :01:43. | :01:49.
on education. The plain and simple truth is that Labour have let down | :01:50. | :01:52.
an entire generation of Welsh young people with little sign of doing | :01:53. | :01:59.
anything to make things better. There was nothing cuddly about the | :02:00. | :02:04.
Conservatives here. This was a conference in which the gloves came | :02:05. | :02:07.
off and battle lines were drawn. There's growing concern that a trial | :02:08. | :02:11.
closure of a junction on the M4 near Port Talbot could harm the local | :02:12. | :02:14.
economy. The Welsh Government plans to close junction 41 in the summer | :02:15. | :02:18.
saying it'll ease congestion. Over 300 people attended a public meeting | :02:19. | :02:22.
last night to voice their concerns. This stretch of motorway can be | :02:23. | :02:25.
bumper-to-bumper and plans to close Junction 41 temporarily are aimed at | :02:26. | :02:30.
easing congestion. But it's not easing the fears of local | :02:31. | :02:32.
businesses. The Aberafan shopping centre is located just off the | :02:33. | :02:36.
junction. Keith Hopkins runs this hairdressers in the centre. He | :02:37. | :02:42.
believes even a short term closure will do long term damage to the | :02:43. | :02:46.
economy. Closing junction 41 closes my business. I'm fully aware of | :02:47. | :02:50.
this. I've been here a long time, nearly 40 years. I know exactly what | :02:51. | :02:54.
it takes to make this business run. The reason we are here in the | :02:55. | :02:58.
beginning is because of ease of access. And over 300 people attended | :02:59. | :03:01.
a public meeting in a church last night so they could have their say | :03:02. | :03:06.
on the plans. The Welsh Government claims it'd bring an economic boost | :03:07. | :03:09.
of over ?1 million a year due to fewer accidents and delays. At rush | :03:10. | :03:13.
hour, this stretch of road can become heavily congested. The Welsh | :03:14. | :03:16.
government say that by closing junction 41, the capacity of the M4 | :03:17. | :03:23.
westbound would increase by 11%. It's a major problem every morning. | :03:24. | :03:27.
That and the Brynglas tunnels are the two big problems we face on the | :03:28. | :03:32.
M4 motorway. What we're trying to do is take the old piece of road that | :03:33. | :03:36.
was built many years ago and hook it up to this new distributor road | :03:37. | :03:40.
which has been built and try to entice the traffic off. The trial | :03:41. | :03:43.
closure is proposed to get underway in August and last for six months. | :03:44. | :03:49.
Football and Cardiff City have given themselves some hope of avoiding | :03:50. | :03:52.
relegation from the Premier League. Juan Cala's goal saw the Bluebirds | :03:53. | :03:56.
win 1-0 at Southampton. Elsewhere there were wins for Newport County | :03:57. | :04:00.
and Wrexham. And The New Saints have won the Welsh Premier after they | :04:01. | :04:03.
drew today. A full check on the weather now, | :04:04. | :04:05.
here's Owain Wyn Evans. It has been a cloudy day across | :04:06. | :04:18.
Wales but blue skies tomorrow, hopefully. Clear skies tonight so it | :04:19. | :04:26.
will be chilly. Clouds will break overnight. Temperatures falling | :04:27. | :04:32.
close to freezing. Tomorrow morning, sunny spells across the | :04:33. | :04:40.
South and mid Wales. The cloud in the North will clear at times | :04:41. | :04:48.
tomorrow. Light to moderate winds. This area of high pressure keeps | :04:49. | :04:51.
things are settled for the next few days. Plenty of blue skies and sunny | :04:52. | :04:57.
spells. That's Wales Today. We're back | :04:58. | :05:00.
tomorrow at 6.50. Thanks for watching. Goodbye. | :05:01. | :05:05.
your work like this. -- subbing simple. When I | :05:06. | :05:15.
We start with a look at the latest satellite sequence, because it shows | :05:16. | :05:19.
what has been going on over the last few hours. This band of cloud has | :05:20. | :05:24.
been slipping south across England and Wales. A bit of patchy rain | :05:25. | :05:25. |
