Good evening. Two schoolgirls have been arrested | :00:17. | :00:20.
on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder following an incident at a | :00:21. | :00:24.
school in the Gwent Valleys. Gwent Police said the teenagers, aged 14 | :00:25. | :00:28.
and 15, were arrested at Cwmcarn High School yesterday, following | :00:29. | :00:32.
concerns about their behaviour. It's understood a teacher may have been | :00:33. | :00:36.
the intended target. Caroline Evans reports. | :00:37. | :00:40.
Police were called to the high school yesteray just before noon | :00:41. | :00:43.
following concerns about the behaviour of thwo pupils. They | :00:44. | :00:48.
arrested a 15-year-old girl from Newbridge and a 14-year-old girl | :00:49. | :00:59.
from Risca. Police say no one was hurt but the two girls were arrested | :01:00. | :01:03.
on the suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. The 15-year-old girl | :01:04. | :01:08.
was also arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and | :01:09. | :01:12.
professional the blade had article on school premises. | :01:13. | :01:15.
According to the teaching union the NASUWT it was other pupils who first | :01:16. | :01:17.
raised their concerns. Today the school issued a letter | :01:18. | :01:21.
saying there was no risk to any staff or learner. | :01:22. | :01:25.
It goes on to say Cwmcanr High is a caring and safe environment, | :01:26. | :01:31.
committed to everyones safety. Caerphilly council has also issued a | :01:32. | :01:34.
statement saying the incident was swiftly dealt with by staff and | :01:35. | :01:36.
Gwent Police. Gwent Police say the two girls were | :01:37. | :01:51.
realeased on police bail pending further inquiries. | :01:52. | :01:54.
Last night we brought you an exclusive report on the poor | :01:55. | :01:57.
treatment of Veronica Teal at the Bethshan Nursing Home in Newtown. | :01:58. | :02:03.
Today her family were given details of a Social Services report into her | :02:04. | :02:07.
care. But they say they've been left outraged and disappointed. India | :02:08. | :02:15.
Pollock reports. Alone and scared, this is how | :02:16. | :02:21.
73-year-old Veronica Teal was found after her family installed a camera | :02:22. | :02:24.
in her room at Bethshan Nursing Home. | :02:25. | :02:32.
They were concerned at how upset she seemed after being at the home for | :02:33. | :02:39.
only a few days. Today the family met with social services to hear the | :02:40. | :02:43.
outcome of an investigation into the neglect and verbal abuse that she | :02:44. | :02:48.
suffered at the home. But they are not happy. Every complaint we have | :02:49. | :02:52.
put in they have upheld and they say it is exceptionally poor practice | :02:53. | :02:54.
and what happened should never have happened. She cried but she is | :02:55. | :03:01.
angry. She cannot understand why we have had this meeting to do with a | :03:02. | :03:07.
report which we cannot have. Social services say that Veronica Teal can | :03:08. | :03:11.
only have a copy of the reported she requests it in a letter but they say | :03:12. | :03:15.
they will continue to support the family. We are monitored by CCTV | :03:16. | :03:20.
every day of our lives, at work and on transport and when shopping but | :03:21. | :03:23.
should it be used to protect us when we are at our most vulnerable. Some | :03:24. | :03:29.
say it is a careful balance between dignity and protection. There are | :03:30. | :03:32.
big questions that need to be answered before any of this comes | :03:33. | :03:51.
into play. That would be who view the footage. I would suggest it is | :03:52. | :03:53.
only family or management or perhaps the Inspectorate bodies with the | :03:54. | :03:55.
position -- permission of the family. How would it be viewed and | :03:56. | :03:58.
how would it be stored and how would your insured the footage was secure. | :03:59. | :04:01.
Parodic Teal spent just under three months at Bethshan Nursing Home and | :04:02. | :04:03.
the home is closely connected with a Pentecostal church who say the | :04:04. | :04:05.
issues have been addressed with staff training and a member of staff | :04:06. | :04:09.
has been disciplined. Elderly who go into any home deserve a high | :04:10. | :04:12.
standard of compassionate care when that breaks down I think we must be | :04:13. | :04:19.
ruthless about it. I really think I must read the report from social | :04:20. | :04:25.
services. Today figures show that there are nearly 600,000 people over | :04:26. | :04:31.
65 in Wales and nearly 12,000 live in care homes. One company is | :04:32. | :04:35.
consulting on whether to put CCTV cameras into homes to protect the | :04:36. | :04:40.
staff and residents. For Veronica Teal the camera was essential in | :04:41. | :04:42.
exposing the poor care and the neglect that she suffered. | :04:43. | :04:46.
There's been a significant increase in the number of complaints by | :04:47. | :04:49.
hospital patients about the way they're treated. Figures obtained by | :04:50. | :04:52.
Plaid Cymru show that between 2009 and 2010, and 2012 and 13 - | :04:53. | :04:56.
complaints soared by 40%. A Welsh government spokesperson says most | :04:57. | :04:59.
people say they're happy with their care and the rise shows people are | :05:00. | :05:05.
engaged with the service. Four men from Newport have appeared | :05:06. | :05:08.
in court accused of an attempted revenge killing. Lewis Bridge, | :05:09. | :05:12.
Brogan Hooper, Gary Rab-johns and Ryan Battersby are accused of | :05:13. | :05:15.
shooting three people in a car last September. Jordan Davies has more. | :05:16. | :05:27.
And attempted revenge killing in the middle of a Newport Street. This is | :05:28. | :05:34.
what was left of the car, allegedly rammed off the road by a jeep | :05:35. | :05:39.
carrying four men from the city. It is claimed today then shot twice at | :05:40. | :05:44.
the three people inside with a shotgun. The jury heard how CCTV | :05:45. | :05:49.
captured the Jeep following the car out of a nearby housing estate and | :05:50. | :05:54.
then it rammed it, possibly twice, on the main road. It caused it to | :05:55. | :05:58.
eventually crash into the side of this pub, not far from the city | :05:59. | :06:04.
centre. The gang and the Jeep have never been found. The gun and the | :06:05. | :06:11.
Jeep have never been found. These men are all charged with three | :06:12. | :06:15.
counts of conspiracy to murder. The prosecution said that the deliberate | :06:16. | :06:19.
ramming and the discharge of two rounds showed a clear intention to | :06:20. | :06:24.
kill those inside the car. The court heard that the attempted killings | :06:25. | :06:29.
were a revenge attack as days before one of the defendants, Brogan | :06:30. | :06:33.
Hooper, had been robbed of money and drugs by two of the victims. All | :06:34. | :06:38.
four men deny all of the charges and the case continues. | :06:39. | :06:40.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have launched their campaign for the | :06:41. | :06:45.
European elections. Visiting a design company in Llandrindod Wells, | :06:46. | :06:49.
they said one Welsh job in ten depends on trade with the EU and | :06:50. | :06:52.
pro-European voters should vote for them. The party's hoping to win its | :06:53. | :06:55.
first ever Welsh seat in the European parliament. We are setting | :06:56. | :07:03.
out our stall, as I said, and inviting people to actually stand up | :07:04. | :07:08.
if you like against the tide of Euro scepticism and xenophobia and say | :07:09. | :07:11.
that this is not what Britain is about and it is not what Wales is | :07:12. | :07:15.
about and we are happy with the Wales that is secure in Britain and | :07:16. | :07:20.
secure in Europe and that is good for the jobs and the economy and we | :07:21. | :07:23.
invite people to vote for us and stem that I'd. | :07:24. | :07:29.
Firefighters across Wales walked out this afternoon in a continuing row | :07:30. | :07:32.
over pensions. It's part of a series of strikes with action on Saturday | :07:33. | :07:35.
and Sunday. The UK Government says it's offering firefighters one of | :07:36. | :07:38.
the most generous public sector pension schemes. | :07:39. | :07:40.
Rugby and the Scarlets have qualified for next seasons elite | :07:41. | :07:43.
European Champions Cup with a win over the Dragons at Parc Y Scarlets. | :07:44. | :07:47.
Ken Owens crossed the line to score the bonus point try and Rhys | :07:48. | :07:50.
Priestland kicked 14 for the Scarlets. Final score 34-23. It | :07:51. | :07:54.
means they're guaranteed to finish in the top six. | :07:55. | :08:00.
Time for the all important Bank Holiday weather forecast now, and | :08:01. | :08:07.
it's not looking too bad is it, Sue? It is not too bad. It has mostly | :08:08. | :08:12.
settled but not completely, some cloud and son around and a little | :08:13. | :08:16.
rain as well. The detail is tricky. If we look at the map tonight most | :08:17. | :08:21.
of Wales stays dry and it is cloudy in the West. Clearer skies further | :08:22. | :08:26.
east with a risk of slight frost. Less cold along the West Coast. | :08:27. | :08:30.
Tomorrow high-pressure over the UK but a warm front will push on from | :08:31. | :08:35.
the Atlantic later in the day. A chilly start and then largely dry | :08:36. | :08:39.
with sunny spells through the morning and similar for much of the | :08:40. | :08:43.
UK and the south and East holds onto the sun for longer stand the cloud | :08:44. | :08:46.
thickens through the West into Scotland. Some rain suppresses the | :08:47. | :08:53.
temperatures here. It is warmest in south-east England. Later in Wales | :08:54. | :08:57.
it is brighter further east but it turns cloudier in the West with a | :08:58. | :09:01.
little rain arriving in the north and west with highs of 11 or 15. The | :09:02. | :09:08.
cloud will thicken for much of the night and a few spots of drizzle do | :09:09. | :09:13.
not amount to much. The South East holds onto the brightness on Sunday | :09:14. | :09:18.
for longest but it is largely cloudy with rain in the north and west that | :09:19. | :09:21.
tries to spread eastwards and the breeze picks up as well. On bank | :09:22. | :09:25.
holiday Monday looks dry but that is probably the warmest day with a | :09:26. | :09:28.
thick cloud and some rain making its way in from the west later in the | :09:29. | :09:33.
day. A low pressure system guides friends in from the land to glitter | :09:34. | :09:37.
on Monday, pushing away the high pressure that has been keeping | :09:38. | :09:41.
things settled towards eastern Europe. Fine weather, often cloudier | :09:42. | :09:49.
in the West and turning wet and windy midweek. Thank you very much. | :09:50. | :09:52.
And that is Wales Today. We'll have updates for over the Bank Holiday | :09:53. | :09:55.
weekend, starting at 6:40pm tomorrow evening. For now though, from all of | :09:56. | :09:59.
us here, good night. | :10:00. | :10:01. |
