The Welsh Rugby Union has overwhelmingly survived a vote | :00:11. | :00:13.
of no confidence at an extraordinary general meeting | :00:14. | :00:15.
prompted by its former chief executive, David Moffett. | :00:16. | :00:19.
After four hours of debate, only four club representatives voted | :00:20. | :00:24.
A strong turnout and a fitting venue, a theatre where all | :00:25. | :00:31.
the drama gripping Welsh rugby was played out to cheers and heckles. | :00:32. | :00:36.
All the main acts were there, WRU, regions, rank and file clubs | :00:37. | :00:40.
and the man who forced the EGM in the first place, David Moffett. | :00:41. | :00:45.
In the four hour meeting there were some heated exchanges | :00:46. | :00:48.
It was the proposed changes to the league structure that provoked the | :00:49. | :00:53.
biggest outburst as clubs complained of a lack of communication | :00:54. | :00:57.
Here, a victory of sorts as the WRU promised to ballot clubs on whether | :00:58. | :01:03.
As was very carefully outlined at the start, | :01:04. | :01:08.
there was a communication process which began in 2012 particularly | :01:09. | :01:12.
It obviously didn't work so we have to improve that. | :01:13. | :01:16.
There was no appetite for all out mutiny. | :01:17. | :01:18.
Moffett's push for a vote of no confidence overwhelmingly rejected. | :01:19. | :01:22.
462 opposed, 18 abstained and just four were in favour. | :01:23. | :01:28.
It is an overwhelming message of support for the WRU. | :01:29. | :01:31.
That said, we have got to continue and improve and get better, | :01:32. | :01:35.
Moffett spoke several times challenging the Union management | :01:36. | :01:40.
But he was shouted down by the floor. | :01:41. | :01:43.
I managed to show the clubs they if they're upset about something | :01:44. | :01:50.
they can call on EGM, they should not be cowed by the WRU. | :01:51. | :01:55.
They should listen to what Gerald Davies had to say | :01:56. | :01:58.
and nothing of what the chief executive had to say in the end. | :01:59. | :02:03.
Because he was at his flowery best, didn't actually, I don't think, | :02:04. | :02:07.
took any responsibility for why it has been called. | :02:08. | :02:11.
At the end there was a rousing speech by the Welsh | :02:12. | :02:13.
legend, Gerald Davies, now on the Union board who said | :02:14. | :02:16.
Welsh rugby had been tarnished by this whole episode and it needed to | :02:17. | :02:19.
Above all else, he said, the Union had learned a painful lesson, | :02:20. | :02:25.
it needs to do a better job of communicating and listening to the | :02:26. | :02:30.
Council leaders should take the lead in reforming local government | :02:31. | :02:38.
and should be trusted to drive any possible mergers, | :02:39. | :02:42.
that's according to the Shadow Welsh Secretary, Owen Smith. | :02:43. | :02:44.
In January, a Welsh Government commission recommended the number | :02:45. | :02:48.
of councils should be cut from 22 to 12 or fewer. | :02:49. | :02:52.
First Minister Carwyn Jones has said councils can't remain | :02:53. | :02:55.
as they are and change is inevitable. | :02:56. | :03:02.
Ultimately, this has to be something that is collaborative. It has to be | :03:03. | :03:09.
not something that is imposed from above, it has to be driven by local | :03:10. | :03:12.
government itself because that is the way in which we will end up with | :03:13. | :03:18.
a low -- best fit between local services and local people. I'm | :03:19. | :03:22.
saying to local government leaders, it is up to you. | :03:23. | :03:30.
The Labour MP for Swansea West, whose constituency is home to | :03:31. | :03:33.
the most overcrowded prison in Wales and England, has called on | :03:34. | :03:35.
Swansea prison has 204 more prisoners than it should. | :03:36. | :03:40.
Geraint Davies said prison overcrowding was putting inmates, | :03:41. | :03:42.
Nearly two-thirds of Welsh voters believe a Yes vote | :03:43. | :03:49.
for Scottish independence should not change the way Wales is governed | :03:50. | :03:53.
61% thought a Yes vote should make no difference while 17% said it | :03:54. | :03:59.
should lead to more powers for the National Assembly. | :04:00. | :04:01.
14% said if scotland votes Yes then Wales should do the same. | :04:02. | :04:04.
Australian seamer, Michael Hogan, took three wickets for Glamorgan | :04:05. | :04:08.
to reduce Kent to 236 for 8 on day one of their county championship | :04:09. | :04:11.
match. Bad light eventually ended play four overs early. | :04:12. | :04:14.
With news of dry, sunny weather for the week ahead, here's Rhian Haf. | :04:15. | :04:22.
Hello. After a fine evening it is mostly dry night. They will be the | :04:23. | :04:30.
odd shower overnight. Dry for most of us and again mired in between. | :04:31. | :04:38.
Lots more sunshine to come tomorrow. The odd spot of rainbow but a fine | :04:39. | :04:42.
day on the whole and feeling warm, temperatures into the low 20s. It | :04:43. | :04:46.
stays settles in the next few days thanks to high pressure. We will be | :04:47. | :04:51.
cloudy at times and the odd shower but good spells of sunshine to | :04:52. | :04:53.
continue. We're back in Breakfast from 6.25am. | :04:54. | :04:53.
That's Wales today, goodnight. Good evening. When the sunshine is | :04:54. | :05:13.
out this week it should feel warm. The sun will have to fight through | :05:14. | :05:17.
the cloud every now and | :05:18. | :05:18. |
