Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story. Joanna Michael stabbed to | :00:00. | :00:14.
death by her boyfriend, waiting to the police to respond to her 999 | :00:15. | :00:18.
calls. Now her family want to change the law so the police can be sued | :00:19. | :00:25.
for negligence. This is an important case with massive consequences for | :00:26. | :00:28.
is that if the door opens, it will open for many other people in this | :00:29. | :00:32.
country. Why did a protest in the middle of | :00:33. | :00:36.
Cardiff turn into this? Tonight, an appeal for video footage to piece | :00:37. | :00:39.
together what happened. Downing Street has been asked to do | :00:40. | :00:46.
more in the search for Arthur Jones, missing on holiday in Crete. | :00:47. | :00:51.
Here at the Commonwealth Games, the medals keep coming. It is not the | :00:52. | :00:56.
one he wanted. Aled Sion Davies has to settle for silver in the discus. | :00:57. | :01:03.
It is an emotional day for the team captain but some words from his | :01:04. | :01:07.
mother helped. I came second and I hope I have not let anyone else | :01:08. | :01:13.
down. It has been a historic games for the Welsh gymnastics. I catch up | :01:14. | :01:20.
with the trio about the boost they have given the sport back home. | :01:21. | :01:34.
Good evening. The family of a woman who was murdered as she waited for | :01:35. | :01:39.
the police to respond to her calls the help have taken their case to | :01:40. | :01:47.
the Supreme Court. He won the law to be changed to the police can be sued | :01:48. | :01:51.
for negligence. Joanna Michael from Cardiff called 99 91 during a | :01:52. | :01:56.
dispute with her former boyfriend five years ago. | :01:57. | :02:01.
Joanna Michael, a 25-year-old mother, murdered by her boyfriend | :02:02. | :02:07.
and her home in Cardiff nearly five years ago. He was sentenced to life | :02:08. | :02:17.
imprisonment for stabbing her 92 times. Her children were in the | :02:18. | :02:23.
house at the time. They were there and they were real. By the time the | :02:24. | :02:29.
police came, it was 30 minutes all in all, she was dead. And she left | :02:30. | :02:38.
two children. For years, the family have tried to sue the police for | :02:39. | :02:48.
damages. However, the law says that they cannot sue the police for | :02:49. | :02:57.
negligence. Joanna's family are challenging that at the Supreme | :02:58. | :02:59.
Court today. There are restrictions on what you | :03:00. | :03:03.
can do in terms of suing the police. Very strict rejections was up in | :03:04. | :03:08.
this case, Joanna was failed abysmally by the police and the | :03:09. | :03:12.
family want to hold the police accountable. Families should be able | :03:13. | :03:18.
to sue the police for negligence. So why might the police have been | :03:19. | :03:22.
negligent? Early in the morning in August 2009, Joanna Rank 999. Her | :03:23. | :03:28.
call was diverted to the wrong control room I her local mobile | :03:29. | :03:33.
phone mast will stop Gwent police did not take enough details from | :03:34. | :03:37.
her. Her local force was South Wales Police was that they did not think | :03:38. | :03:40.
it required an immediate response because of the lack of detail passed | :03:41. | :03:48.
from Gwent. 15 minutes later, she calls 999 again. This time, she is | :03:49. | :03:53.
screaming. She manages to tell them where she is in Cardiff before the | :03:54. | :03:55.
line goes dead. South Wales Police then give the call a greater | :03:56. | :04:04.
priority. Two officers are sent. Neighbours report a domestic abuse | :04:05. | :04:16.
incident and children screaming. When the police arrived, she is | :04:17. | :04:22.
found dead. If her family are successful in winning the right to | :04:23. | :04:26.
claim for damages, it could be a landmark legal case. They say if you | :04:27. | :04:31.
have everyone suing the police, that will not be any good for society. Of | :04:32. | :04:35.
course, this is a very important case with massive consequences but | :04:36. | :04:39.
if the door opens, it will open for many other people in this country | :04:40. | :04:44.
who say the police did that, they did not act swiftly and they failed | :04:45. | :04:46.
to protect people. What happens here in the neighbourhood where Joanna | :04:47. | :04:52.
used to live and the way the police reacted to it could have a profound | :04:53. | :04:57.
effect on the legal system in England and Wales. The supreme court | :04:58. | :05:01.
will continue hearing evidence tomorrow all those detailed findings | :05:02. | :05:04.
might not be available for some week. | :05:05. | :05:12.
-- for some weeks. Three nurses have appeared at | :05:13. | :05:17.
Bridgend Magistrates' Court in connection with the wilful | :05:18. | :05:19.
negligence of nine patients. Rebecca Jones, Lauro Bertulano and Clare | :05:20. | :05:22.
Cahill worked at the Princess of Wales Hospital. It is alleged they | :05:23. | :05:27.
failed to look at blood glucose levels and then falsified reports. | :05:28. | :05:33.
They are at the due to appear at the Court ex-man. | :05:34. | :05:36.
-- next month. Michael Pearce denies murder and an | :05:37. | :05:52.
alternative charge of manslaughter. The Food Standards Agency says it | :05:53. | :05:55.
has carried out detailed audits of a poultry processing plant on Anglesey | :05:56. | :06:01.
after allegations of hygiene failings. It comes after claims by a | :06:02. | :06:11.
newspaper at the factory. The initial audit showed the factory to | :06:12. | :06:18.
be generally satisfactory. The police are appealing to the | :06:19. | :06:22.
public to send in video footage of violent clashes which broke out | :06:23. | :06:25.
during a peaceful march in Cardiff on Saturday. The protest as were | :06:26. | :06:30.
demonstrating against Israel's military action in Gaza. Questions | :06:31. | :06:34.
are being asked about the police handling of the March after | :06:35. | :06:39.
protesters had glasses and chairs thrown at them. | :06:40. | :06:45.
On a sunny summer afternoon in Cardiff, a peaceful protest against | :06:46. | :06:50.
the Israeli operation in Gaza is suddenly confronted by violence. | :06:51. | :06:55.
These pictures show tables and chairs being held through the air | :06:56. | :07:02.
while abuse is shattered. Police say a small mother people disrupted the | :07:03. | :07:05.
march as it made its way through the city. | :07:06. | :07:08.
Around 1500 people were on the march on Saturday. When they got to this | :07:09. | :07:14.
point, some people in the bars around started throwing glasses, | :07:15. | :07:17.
chairs and tables will stop two men who are not connected to the march | :07:18. | :07:21.
were arrested by the police but have been released on bail. | :07:22. | :07:26.
Judy was on the march. She is a veteran campaigner of more than 30 | :07:27. | :07:30.
years and says she has never seen anything like it. It upset me | :07:31. | :07:34.
because they work women, there were mothers, they were babies in which | :07:35. | :07:41.
Jess was up there where elderly people and evil in wheelchairs. A | :07:42. | :07:48.
glass was thrown in front of me. The contents were down one side of me. | :07:49. | :07:51.
As I turned around, I saw a white man, bald, with tattooed, saying it | :07:52. | :07:58.
was for the thing next to me. I said he was a racist and attended the | :07:59. | :08:02.
British-born Muslim woman it was aimed at. This man was at the | :08:03. | :08:11.
protest. He says it may not have been a targeted attack that it | :08:12. | :08:15.
cannot be tolerated. It is not clear whether it is any unorganised | :08:16. | :08:23.
presents but people do should be able to protest without fear of | :08:24. | :08:27.
violence, assault or intimidation. Unfortunately, there appear to have | :08:28. | :08:31.
been a number of ugly incidents on the fringes. Police say they will | :08:32. | :08:35.
investigate how the violence started and arrest those involved. The | :08:36. | :08:40.
scenes we experience on Saturday are unacceptable. We acknowledge they | :08:41. | :08:44.
will be frightening for anyone involved in that. Once we realised | :08:45. | :08:50.
the peaceful protest had been disrupted by violence, we got | :08:51. | :08:57.
involved. We have allocated a dedicated team of officers to bring | :08:58. | :09:03.
the offenders to justice. Police want anyone with any information to | :09:04. | :09:06.
contact them. The Wales audit office has confirmed | :09:07. | :09:21.
it is looking into the departure of the education representative on | :09:22. | :09:30.
Conwy Council. The council says it behaved responsibly. | :09:31. | :09:35.
Trojan Electronics will move into a new site at the old Visteon site. It | :09:36. | :09:41.
will use a grant from the Welsh government. | :09:42. | :09:45.
More areas of Wales will be explored for shale gas. The UK government has | :09:46. | :09:48.
opened bidding for licences to go for the gas using the controversial | :09:49. | :09:52.
process of fracking. Parts of the North, East and South will be | :09:53. | :09:59.
affected. They will only be drilling in national parks and areas of | :10:00. | :10:03.
outstanding natural beauty in exceptional circumstances. | :10:04. | :10:05.
The family of a pensioner who went missing while on holiday in Crete | :10:06. | :10:09.
have asked the promised to do more to help in the search was Arthur | :10:10. | :10:12.
Jones has not been seen for more than five weeks. A letter was | :10:13. | :10:17.
delivered to David Cameron today urging him to keep his promise to do | :10:18. | :10:27.
all he can to help. Arthur Jones's friends say they need | :10:28. | :10:30.
to take up David Cameron's offer of help from the Commons. Will the | :10:31. | :10:35.
Prime Minister ensure that the FCO continued their great work and | :10:36. | :10:39.
co-operate with the Greek government to ensure Arthur is found. I will | :10:40. | :10:45.
certainly everything -- I will certainly do everything I can. The | :10:46. | :10:52.
73-year-old went missing after telling his family he was going | :10:53. | :10:57.
walking in the hills. His equipment had been acting is hotel room. His | :10:58. | :11:03.
relatives were joined by police officers and a mountain rescue | :11:04. | :11:07.
specialist as they scoured the area. They say strategic support is | :11:08. | :11:10.
essential. We need to get a congressional | :11:11. | :11:16.
search team out there for a thorough search of the area in Crete. The | :11:17. | :11:25.
conditions are absolutely horrific out there and they have a large area | :11:26. | :11:29.
to search was up the pressure on the UK government has swept around the | :11:30. | :11:31.
world, with people offering support from near and far. It has helped the | :11:32. | :11:36.
family cope with any lack of new developments. | :11:37. | :11:44.
We have not asked anyone to do this. It is heart-warming when people are | :11:45. | :11:49.
prepared to go above and beyond to help. That is the sort of message I | :11:50. | :11:52.
would like to give to David Cameron. More family member is due | :11:53. | :11:57.
to fly to Crete tomorrow to widen the search area. The UK governance | :11:58. | :12:01.
says it is already giving consumer assistance. In the five and a half | :12:02. | :12:07.
weeks and see was last seen, Arthur Jones's family and this can usually | :12:08. | :12:10.
have made huge efforts to my people about his disappearance. In this | :12:11. | :12:16.
letter, there is some hopes that the prime in a store be prompted to keep | :12:17. | :12:19.
his promise to do everything he can to help. | :12:20. | :12:26.
Much more to come to before 7pm. I would like to take the opportunity | :12:27. | :12:29.
of wishing Swansea all the very best as a new city. The scene of many of | :12:30. | :12:34.
the city 's big days, Swansea's Brangwyn Hall is restored to its | :12:35. | :12:39.
former glory. And we have seen the last of the | :12:40. | :12:42.
berry hot and humid weather for a while. It full forecast later. -- a | :12:43. | :12:48.
full forecast later. To the Commonwealth Games now, where | :12:49. | :12:52.
team Wales have already beaten the total of 19 medals they won in Delhi | :12:53. | :13:00.
four years ago. That is Glasgow is up -- let us cross to glass go. | :13:01. | :13:07.
Thank you. Welcome to Glasgow. It has been a lovely day here. A day | :13:08. | :13:14.
packed full of competition. Wales's medal count up to 20 as we reach the | :13:15. | :13:19.
end of day five. There may be more to come. Jazz Jones is up for a | :13:20. | :13:28.
gold. There was some disappointment for the team captain. Aled Sion | :13:29. | :13:36.
Davies was hoping for a gold but he had to settle for silver. | :13:37. | :13:45.
Gutted. He missed out on gold. The disappointment all too much for Aled | :13:46. | :13:50.
Sion Davies. The morning started so well for the Paralympic and world | :13:51. | :13:54.
champion. He has limited mobility in his right leg and this is what he | :13:55. | :13:59.
can achieve with his right arm. His second attempt put him in the lead. | :14:00. | :14:04.
But Dan Greaves from England fought back. Aled Sion Davies could not | :14:05. | :14:10.
better it. Expectations were high here at Hampden Park that Wales | :14:11. | :14:15.
would pick up its third gold medal of the games, with Aled Sion Davies | :14:16. | :14:23.
competing in his Paris -- in his para sport event. It did not turn | :14:24. | :14:37.
out that way, he was clearly in tears after his event. To be the | :14:38. | :14:49.
team captain of a thriving team. He delivered a performance that was | :14:50. | :14:53.
hard to match. We were swapping the lead, so it was close. I just missed | :14:54. | :14:59.
out. After competing, his family, who travelled from Wales, were | :15:00. | :15:04.
desperate to catch up. His father tried to track him down before a | :15:05. | :15:09.
kiss from his girlfriend and a cuddle from his mother. You did | :15:10. | :15:19.
brilliant! It was fab. So much time, effort and dedication he has put | :15:20. | :15:23.
into his training and commitment and he is so committed that when he | :15:24. | :15:30.
tries his best, unfortunately he wanted gold but he has had silver | :15:31. | :15:34.
and we are proud of him. Elsewhere, the 100 metre sprint for visually | :15:35. | :15:39.
impaired athletes saw a season 's best. At 44, the Welsh one has | :15:40. | :15:46.
plenty of experience, having come needed at six Paralympic Games. | :15:47. | :15:56.
Rees Jones who has cerebral palsy is also hoping to medal in his event | :15:57. | :16:02.
tonight. After success last time round, can | :16:03. | :16:11.
the hammer thrower turn silver into gold? | :16:12. | :16:20.
Arab medal total is looking healthy banks to the rhythmic gymnastics | :16:21. | :16:27.
team. -- our medal total. They have spent the weekend talking | :16:28. | :16:30.
to media from all over the world. I caught up with the trio along the | :16:31. | :16:34.
banks of the River earlier and began by asking if it had also gained. -- | :16:35. | :16:42.
if it had all sunk in. Yesterday was a calm day, so it was better. Today, | :16:43. | :16:50.
we have been out a bit more and people keep stopping us, children | :16:51. | :16:54.
and so on, so it seems a little more real. It is scary but lovely to have | :16:55. | :16:59.
seen so many little children who have loved it. It is really good. | :17:00. | :17:04.
When you work in but one that final performance, the one you won the | :17:05. | :17:09.
gold with, was there a sense of, I will do this, this is my last | :17:10. | :17:20.
moment? It was the last one. I was not thinking about placing by then. | :17:21. | :17:23.
I was gobsmacked the whole week, the whole three days so far. The last | :17:24. | :17:29.
one was pure pleasure and it was my last routine, I will just do it. | :17:30. | :17:32.
Just a word about the two team-mates next you. I know you are emotional | :17:33. | :17:38.
about them. Just tell is about how special beast who are. I think you | :17:39. | :17:42.
can all see because you have watched them perform and you have seen how | :17:43. | :17:46.
much support they show. I think they have shown as much as I could | :17:47. | :17:50.
explain how special they are all ready. The bond between you has been | :17:51. | :17:55.
lovely. It is a special friendship. Yes, we are close friends. When we | :17:56. | :18:00.
are at home and we spent time out of the gym as well as in the gym, you | :18:01. | :18:03.
have thought that we would get bored of each other. But we still spend | :18:04. | :18:09.
all of our time together. Do you get nervous watching the others? Yes, | :18:10. | :18:14.
really nervous. On the last day, when Frankie was doing her ribbon, I | :18:15. | :18:21.
was screaming. I was more nervous for her than for myself. What has | :18:22. | :18:24.
been the reaction from everybody to you winning the silver medal in the | :18:25. | :18:31.
team? I've had an amazing response. Everyone has been so proud. It has | :18:32. | :18:38.
been amazing. Have you thought about where you will keep your medal? Has | :18:39. | :18:42.
anybody asked a habit to put it in the house? Yes, they said to put it | :18:43. | :18:49.
in a safe in the village. I think I will frame it and put it on the | :18:50. | :18:55.
wall. I can tell you, will me finish that interview, they were mobbed. | :18:56. | :18:59.
Little girls are running up to them, asking to have photos taken. The | :19:00. | :19:06.
Frankie factor is having an impact on the artistic gymnastics. They are | :19:07. | :19:11.
currently leading the team event. Wales's women currently in the lead | :19:12. | :19:17.
in the team event. Other news today and the first medal | :19:18. | :19:20.
of the day for team Wales came this morning at the lawn bowls in | :19:21. | :19:26.
Kelvingrove, where they beat Australia. They held their nerve in | :19:27. | :19:33.
a game to win 16-3. It was wales's first medal on the polls this year. | :19:34. | :19:40.
After disappointment yesterday, it was good. It was a big day. We've be | :19:41. | :19:48.
-- we regrouped and it was fantastic. As I mentioned earlier, | :19:49. | :19:55.
all eyes on the pool tonight and a potentially historic night for wales | :19:56. | :20:02.
women. It would end a 40 year wait for a gold medal from a Welsh woman | :20:03. | :20:09.
in the pool. Jazz broke the games record in her semifinal. Keep a | :20:10. | :20:19.
close eye on her. Also potential medals in the backstroke and | :20:20. | :20:23.
butterfly. Wales has a contender through in the | :20:24. | :20:29.
bantamweight division in boxing. The 22-year-old is on target to become | :20:30. | :20:33.
the first Welshman to win to boxing golds at the Commonwealth Games. | :20:34. | :20:40.
Just walking around the streets of the city, I can tell you that | :20:41. | :20:43.
Scotland as a nation are very pleased with how the games are | :20:44. | :20:46.
going. But there is no guarantee that Wales will follow suit in a bid | :20:47. | :20:50.
to host an up-and-coming Commonwealth game. -- Commonwealth | :20:51. | :20:55.
Games. That is what the first Minister said. Congratulating team | :20:56. | :21:00.
Wales for their medals, he said that they would like to host the games in | :21:01. | :21:04.
principle but that it is very expensive. It costs a lot of money. | :21:05. | :21:09.
?500 million. You would have to find other sources of money, you have to | :21:10. | :21:14.
find somewhere in Wales that needed to be be generated that was also | :21:15. | :21:17.
access about. That is what they have done here, this area of Glasgow, | :21:18. | :21:31.
they was regeneration here. Wales have one attained 20 medal so far. | :21:32. | :21:46.
Two golds. Nine silver and nine bronze. They are ninth overall in | :21:47. | :21:51.
the medal table, just behind Singapore. As I mentioned, they | :21:52. | :21:54.
could be adding to that medal tally tonight, with medals up for grabs in | :21:55. | :22:02.
the pool. Anna a vicious target was set for 27. It does not look so out | :22:03. | :22:06.
of reach now. We need to keep pondering on that. That is all for | :22:07. | :22:10.
now. We'll be back with a late bulletin. Back to you in Cardiff. | :22:11. | :22:19.
Thank you. One of Swansea's most iconic landmarks has reopened after | :22:20. | :22:23.
a multi-million pound restoration project. The Brangwyn Hall had been | :22:24. | :22:29.
the furthest -- had not been the furthest since it was opened 80 | :22:30. | :22:34.
years ago. It is now fit for the 21st century. We have had a look. | :22:35. | :22:37.
I would like to take the opportunity of wishing Swansea all the very best | :22:38. | :22:44.
as a new city. Since it first opened in 1934, the Brangwyn Hall has seen | :22:45. | :22:53.
its fair share of history. It is where Prince Charles announced | :22:54. | :22:58.
Swansea would be given city status. Having hosted various events for 80 | :22:59. | :23:03.
years, it was showing its age. It has now reopened after a ?6 million | :23:04. | :23:12.
renovation scheme. Visitors returning to the whole may | :23:13. | :23:20.
wonder what has changed. The idea was to subtly upgrade and refurbish | :23:21. | :23:23.
this grade one listed building. Restoring it to its former splendour | :23:24. | :23:31.
but also making it a concert venue fit for the 21st century. We have | :23:32. | :23:35.
completely transformed the Green trim for performers. We have added | :23:36. | :23:40.
new toilets, new bar facilities, we have low energy light bulbs | :23:41. | :23:43.
throughout the venue. We have rainwater capture, we have made it | :23:44. | :23:47.
eco-friendly. We have easy access and it is the number one venue to | :23:48. | :23:51.
come to. The hall is named after Frank Brangwyn, and it is home to | :23:52. | :23:58.
his reddish Empire panels. It was commissioned by the House of Lords | :23:59. | :24:04.
to commemorate the war. They were to be shown in the Palace of | :24:05. | :24:07.
Westminster. They were deemed to be too colourful and lively and they | :24:08. | :24:13.
were eventually brought to Swansea. A plastic shield had to be placed | :24:14. | :24:17.
over the panels as the painstaking work of renovating the hall was | :24:18. | :24:21.
carried out. You cover everything that needs protecting to begin | :24:22. | :24:25.
with, then you start peeling back the layers, almost like an onion, | :24:26. | :24:30.
gently clean, gently repair. The results speak for themselves. To my | :24:31. | :24:34.
mind, it is one of the foremost performance venues in Wales, if not | :24:35. | :24:42.
the UK. And the Brangwyn panels now have a whole that is a fitting | :24:43. | :24:48.
tribute to the war a century ago. Now for the weather forecast. | :24:49. | :24:50.
Cooler, isn't it? Certainly more, double for sleeping. | :24:51. | :24:59.
We have seen of the last of the hot and humid weather for the moment. | :25:00. | :25:03.
Still on the one side, especially in the south-east. Feeling pressure. | :25:04. | :25:11.
The next few days, there is 20 more dry weather to come. Little if any | :25:12. | :25:14.
rain expected but there is a change, later on in the week. A | :25:15. | :25:21.
lovely end of the day with sunshine. Overnight, dry and fairly clear, a | :25:22. | :25:24.
little bit of mist by dawn. The lowest temperatures between ten and | :25:25. | :25:29.
16 Celsius. Tomorrow's chart shows low pressure between Scotland and | :25:30. | :25:33.
Iceland, with a weak front moving southwards. This is the picture for | :25:34. | :25:40.
8am. The whole country dry with many places bright with some lovely | :25:41. | :25:42.
sunshine in the south and east. Parts of Powys and Wrexham. A light | :25:43. | :25:56.
westerly breeze. A few spots of light rain and drizzle in the far | :25:57. | :25:59.
north and west. That will die away. Elsewhere staying dry. Highest | :26:00. | :26:04.
temperatures in the South East, between 23 and 24 Celsius. Cooler in | :26:05. | :26:09.
the north-west, especially on the coast. In the Vale of Glamorgan | :26:10. | :26:14.
tomorrow, staying dry, with the best of the sunshine in the morning. | :26:15. | :26:20.
Highs of 22 Celsius in Barry. A little rain and result in the late | :26:21. | :26:23.
morning into the afternoon with a high of 19. Wednesday, more dry | :26:24. | :26:31.
weather, some showers in the North. A few clouds with a little sunshine. | :26:32. | :26:37.
On Thursday, if you scattered showers but a lot of places dry. Our | :26:38. | :26:49.
picture tonight is from Zoe Davies, nice weather for a walk around the | :26:50. | :26:53.
lake. Thank you. Enjoy the weather tomorrow. Tonight's headlines. The | :26:54. | :27:01.
family of Joanna Michael, who was stabbed to death by her boyfriend | :27:02. | :27:05.
while waiting for the police to respond to her 999 calls want to | :27:06. | :27:15.
change the law so the police can be sued for negligence. Questions are | :27:16. | :27:28.
being asked about the police handling of the March after | :27:29. | :27:31.
protesters had glasses and chairs thrown at them. I will have an | :27:32. | :27:37.
update after the BBC news at 10pm. Though get our e-mail address. That | :27:38. | :27:43.
is Wales Today. Thank you for watching. Good evening. | :27:44. | :28:00.
I leave the ashram, travel halfway across the world to find my father, | :28:01. | :28:04.
Oh, well. As Vashrati says, gotta keep smiling! | :28:05. | :28:12.
We don't tend to use the bathroom together here. | :28:13. | :28:15. |
