Welcome to Wales today. Our top story: Murco oil refinery in | :00:00. | :00:13.
Pembrokeshire sold to an American billionaire, safeguarding hundreds | :00:14. | :00:17.
of jobs. He says he understands the economic importance. You're talking | :00:18. | :00:21.
about thousands of jobs that are secured in and around the area of | :00:22. | :00:27.
Milford Haven. So, good news for the workforce | :00:28. | :00:32.
here, but also, relief in the wider community so dependent on this | :00:33. | :00:33.
plant. A massive wind farm the size of | :00:34. | :00:55.
Anglesey planned for the North Wales coast scrapped. Why the change of | :00:56. | :00:58.
heart? They are running around, but more | :00:59. | :01:01.
than a quarter of four and five-year-olds in Wales are now | :01:02. | :01:05.
overweight. Good evening from Glasgow. So much | :01:06. | :01:09.
for the friendly games. Welsh weightlifter Gareth Evans has his | :01:10. | :01:14.
nose broken in an attack. An Australian competitor admits | :01:15. | :01:17.
assaulting him. And from Paris to the podium. | :01:18. | :01:22.
Cyclist Geraint Thomas wins bronze, just four days after the gruelling | :01:23. | :01:23.
Tour de France. Good evening. The American | :01:24. | :01:32.
billionaire who is buying the Murco oil refinery and Milford Haven has | :01:33. | :01:36.
told Wales today all 400 staff there will keep their jobs. Today, the | :01:37. | :01:41.
Klesch Group confirmed that it will buy the site. The company owner Gary | :01:42. | :01:44.
Klesch said that they will now invest tens of millions of pounds to | :01:45. | :01:49.
improve the plant. Our reporter is there for us tonight. | :01:50. | :01:56.
Jamie, there has been a real sense of relief here since that | :01:57. | :01:58.
announcement this morning that this refinery is being sold, but | :01:59. | :02:03.
crucially as well, that the workforce will be safeguarded. There | :02:04. | :02:08.
has been a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the refinery here and | :02:09. | :02:11.
over the wider community for many, many months now. This evening, it | :02:12. | :02:16.
seems that cloud is starting to clear. As they went about their work | :02:17. | :02:21.
at the Murco oil refinery this afternoon, workers told me they were | :02:22. | :02:25.
relieved at hearing the news. It is not clear how much the takeover is | :02:26. | :02:29.
worth, but for the people working here, the deal is priceless. | :02:30. | :02:34.
Speaking via Skype from Italy, the prospective owner told me he will be | :02:35. | :02:38.
retaining the workforce and restarting operations on the site. | :02:39. | :02:44.
It is our intention to keep the jobs at Milford Haven, and the other | :02:45. | :02:46.
thing I would mention is, everyone always looks at the jobs at the | :02:47. | :02:50.
refinery, which oddly are very important, but what is also | :02:51. | :03:00.
important are the indirect jobs, a multiple of the four or 500 people | :03:01. | :03:05.
we will keep at Milford Haven, you are talking about thousands of jobs | :03:06. | :03:09.
that are secured in and around the area of Milford Haven. | :03:10. | :03:14.
It has been a worrying time for the people of Milford Haven, and the | :03:15. | :03:17.
announcement today is a big boost for a community that has been so | :03:18. | :03:22.
reliant on the refinery since it opened more than 40 years ago. The | :03:23. | :03:28.
site came into operation in 1973, when it was owned by a Murco. In | :03:29. | :03:35.
1981, Murco became a partner, and a major upgrade took place. The | :03:36. | :03:38.
refinery was first put up for sale four years ago, and earlier this | :03:39. | :03:43.
year, a deal with a potential buyer fell through. This morning, the | :03:44. | :03:47.
Klesch Group signed a purchase agreement with Murco's owners, | :03:48. | :03:53.
Murphy Oil. Anthony Piatt works as a contractor at Murco. It was just | :03:54. | :03:59.
dragging on and on. There were room after room, yes, it is good news, no | :04:00. | :04:04.
it is bad news. So, it is a good outcome at the end. So, brilliant. | :04:05. | :04:11.
Fantastic news. My husband is there, so brilliant. What is he working | :04:12. | :04:16.
there today? He is. I have not heard anything from him today, so this is | :04:17. | :04:22.
news to me. Brilliant, good. The Welsh government said the | :04:23. | :04:25.
takeover is good news, and is the first step towards securing the | :04:26. | :04:30.
refinery's long-term future. This is excellent news. I have been | :04:31. | :04:33.
following the events over the last few weeks, and we have been pulling | :04:34. | :04:38.
out all the stops to help save those jobs. Marvellous to know there is | :04:39. | :04:42.
now a buyer, and those jobs will be saved for Pembrokeshire. They are | :04:43. | :04:45.
very well paid jobs, and it would have left an enormous dent in the | :04:46. | :04:52.
economy here. Local politicians have also welcomed the deal. The plant at | :04:53. | :04:55.
Milford Haven is an efficient one, the workers there are incredibly | :04:56. | :04:59.
professional. I was very pleased to bring Gary Klesch into the sales | :05:00. | :05:02.
process seven months ago, because he has a track record in making plants | :05:03. | :05:07.
like that even more efficient and successful. So I am optimistic that | :05:08. | :05:11.
he can make a difference in secure the long-term future for the Murco | :05:12. | :05:13.
oil refinery. Having served in this community so | :05:14. | :05:16.
well for so many years, this evening, this fresh hope is that | :05:17. | :05:23.
this refinery will continue to provide people with work for years | :05:24. | :05:24.
to come. We have also had a statement from | :05:25. | :05:30.
the current owners of the refinery, which reads: Murphy Oil is pleased | :05:31. | :05:34.
to announce that a deal has been agreed for the sale of the Milford | :05:35. | :05:38.
Haven refinery. We have worked tirelessly to find a workable | :05:39. | :05:42.
solution that would see the refinery remain open, and are delighted that | :05:43. | :05:46.
a positive outcome has been reached. That deal is expected to be | :05:47. | :05:49.
completed, or should be completed, before the end of October. | :05:50. | :05:55.
Thank you. Sticking with energy, the other end of the country, tonight, a | :05:56. | :05:58.
surprise announcement. Developers have pulled the plug on a massive | :05:59. | :06:02.
wind farm off Anglesey, which, it is claimed, could have powered 1.7 | :06:03. | :06:08.
million homes. It is the second big offshore wind farm to be shelved in | :06:09. | :06:11.
a period of months. 12 miles off the coast, it would have been the first | :06:12. | :06:15.
of three to be built on the so-called Celtic Array, between | :06:16. | :06:16.
Anglesey and the Isle of Man. In the scale of things, it seems | :06:17. | :06:27.
promotional videos come cheap. The Celtic Array is at the heart of this | :06:28. | :06:28.
important growing industry. This is how Centrica and Dong Energy | :06:29. | :06:38.
were promoting their Celtic Array development. No longer will stop | :06:39. | :06:43.
they have pulled out. An echo of a decision late last year by a company | :06:44. | :06:47.
to abandon a project of the South Wales coast. In this case, the | :06:48. | :06:53.
Celtic Array people blamed sea bed geology. On Anglesey, the decision | :06:54. | :07:01.
is a setback. At Holyhead Towing, a vessel is being built to service | :07:02. | :07:04.
wind farms. When this vessel goes to see in a few months, it will most | :07:05. | :07:08.
likely work of the East Coast of England, servicing wind farms there. | :07:09. | :07:13.
To say this decision today stalls the UK's offshore renewables energy | :07:14. | :07:17.
is perhaps going too far, but it certainly brings future wind farm | :07:18. | :07:20.
developments of the Welsh coast to a halt. | :07:21. | :07:23.
A subsidiary called Turbine Transfers would have bid for work in | :07:24. | :07:29.
the Celtic Array. They learnt of the U-turn this morning. | :07:30. | :07:32.
The overall timing was still a long way out, and the ground work can all | :07:33. | :07:41.
been going on. In essence, there was still plenty to do to get to a point | :07:42. | :07:44.
where construction was going to start. So, disappointment more than | :07:45. | :07:51.
shock, I think, probably. This leaves Wales without | :07:52. | :07:54.
significant offshore wind farm developments and planning, and also | :07:55. | :07:59.
shows that there is a huge mist opportunity there for the people of | :08:00. | :08:02.
Anglesey to benefit from all of the work that would have come from that | :08:03. | :08:06.
wind farm. The island did help to gain from the Celtic Array, although | :08:07. | :08:11.
nothing firm had been promised. Policymakers here hoped to use the | :08:12. | :08:14.
energy industry, including nuclear as well as renewables, to promote | :08:15. | :08:17.
growth. There wasn't any specific job | :08:18. | :08:22.
proposals we were aware of. They were opportunities for the Irish sea | :08:23. | :08:25.
and for the mainland around that sea, but for Anglesey, it is the | :08:26. | :08:29.
potential long-term jobs which have been lost, rather than that specific | :08:30. | :08:34.
figures and specific opportunities which are well defined. | :08:35. | :08:37.
When it was first announced, the Celtic Array held great promise in | :08:38. | :08:43.
terms of jobs and investment. That seems to have come to nothing. They | :08:44. | :08:47.
few miles along the coast, this wind farm is nearing completion. Could | :08:48. | :08:51.
this turn out to be Wales' final large-scale offshore wind farm | :08:52. | :08:56.
project? And assault on the Welsh | :08:57. | :08:59.
weightlifter Gareth Evans of the Commonwealth Games has led to | :09:00. | :09:02.
another weightlifter being expelled from the games. The police were | :09:03. | :09:05.
called to the athletes village in Glasgow yesterday. Now, live to | :09:06. | :09:11.
Scotland, where Claire Summers has the latest. | :09:12. | :09:15.
Thank you. Good evening. Yes, news of this incident came to light here | :09:16. | :09:19.
early this morning. A stray Lee weightlifter Francois Etoundi, who | :09:20. | :09:25.
won a bronze medal, pleaded guilty in court this afternoon to | :09:26. | :09:28.
head-butting Mr Evans, whose nose was broken in the attack. The | :09:29. | :09:31.
Australian has now had his Commonwealth Games accreditation | :09:32. | :09:36.
removed. Weightlifter Gareth Evans came to | :09:37. | :09:40.
Glasgow to try to win a Commonwealth medal, but now he will remember the | :09:41. | :09:43.
friendly games for a different reason. A fellow athlete attacked | :09:44. | :09:49.
him and broke his nose. This is the entrance to the sprawling athletes' | :09:50. | :09:55.
village, where thousands of competitors, including Team Wales, | :09:56. | :09:58.
are being housed the duration of the games. Police were called here at | :09:59. | :10:03.
6am yesterday morning, where they arrested the Australian weightlifter | :10:04. | :10:06.
Francois Etoundi. Today, at Glasgow Sheriff's court, the 29-year-old, | :10:07. | :10:12.
who won a bronze medal on Sunday, pleaded guilty to head-butting | :10:13. | :10:15.
Gareth Evans during an altercation. The court heard a problem arose | :10:16. | :10:20.
between the two men after Mr Evans' girlfriend hugged Francois Etoundi | :10:21. | :10:23.
as he was being congratulated by other athletes for winning a medal. | :10:24. | :10:29.
Today, the Sheriff's court ordered it indeed to pay ?400 to Mr Evans, | :10:30. | :10:33.
and he had is accreditation removed, so he can be part of Sunday's | :10:34. | :10:37.
closing ceremony. Many athletes from all countries have finished | :10:38. | :10:41.
competing and relaxing in the village until the games come to a | :10:42. | :10:45.
close in three days. We understand that Team Wales' chief Brian Davies | :10:46. | :10:49.
has reminded has athletes to make sure they maintain what he calls the | :10:50. | :10:54.
impeccable standard of behaviour as part of Team Wales' current conduct. | :10:55. | :11:00.
Away from that story, there has been plenty of Welsh interest in the | :11:01. | :11:03.
sporting competition today. I will bring you news of a well earned | :11:04. | :11:07.
bronze medal for cyclists Geraint Thomas in a few minutes. Now, back | :11:08. | :11:12.
to you. Thank you. A Deputy Leader Powys | :11:13. | :11:15.
council has told BBC Wales she apologises for using racially | :11:16. | :11:19.
offensive language at a council meeting. Myth and we Alexander used | :11:20. | :11:24.
the end word in a debate on Tuesday. Powys council says she has | :11:25. | :11:28.
been severely reprimanded, but tonight, there are calls for her to | :11:29. | :11:37.
resign. Alexander is an independent | :11:38. | :11:40.
councillor, also known for her work as a writer and broadcaster. At the | :11:41. | :11:43.
council meeting, she said elderly and vulnerable people in her ward, | :11:44. | :11:47.
whose first language is Wells, are treated badly by health workers when | :11:48. | :11:50.
they go to English hospitals and when they are visited at home. She | :11:51. | :11:54.
used the N word in her description of that treatment, adding that | :11:55. | :11:59.
language and culture are being trampled on. Council Alexander has | :12:00. | :12:02.
apologised for using the word, saying she was trying to make a | :12:03. | :12:05.
reference to the American writer Maja Angeli. In the book, I Know Why | :12:06. | :12:13.
The Caged Bird Sings, Maja Angeli gives an account of growing up in | :12:14. | :12:19.
the American South in the 1930s. In one chapter, Shearer is a white | :12:20. | :12:22.
dentist refusing to treat her because she is black. Myfanwy | :12:23. | :12:31.
Alexander says she used the word to try and draw a parallel between that | :12:32. | :12:35.
incident and how her people feel about cross-border health care. It | :12:36. | :12:39.
was an insensitive word to use, but it was used in the course of | :12:40. | :12:43.
defeating prejudice, not encouraging it. Perhaps that was both clumsy and | :12:44. | :12:50.
insensitive, and I definitely deserve my reprimand. I was | :12:51. | :12:54.
absolutely shocked, because in the 21st-century, you don't expect to | :12:55. | :12:58.
hear this sort of language, especially from a public servant. I | :12:59. | :13:05.
don't think that comparing the treatment to the end that word is at | :13:06. | :13:09.
all even comparable. The Liberal Democrats in Powys have | :13:10. | :13:13.
tonight called for Myfanwy Alexander to resign from her Cabinet role, | :13:14. | :13:18.
something she says she will not do. Powys council has referred the | :13:19. | :13:20.
matter to the public services ombudsman. | :13:21. | :13:24.
You are watching Wales Today. Much more to come before seven o'clock. | :13:25. | :13:32.
On an adventure holiday, wood cutting VAT get our visitor numbers | :13:33. | :13:34.
climbing? And the last eight months have been | :13:35. | :13:37.
warmer than average, but it is all downhill for the stars in August. | :13:38. | :13:40.
Cooler, with rain and heavy showers. More than a quarter of four and | :13:41. | :13:50.
five-year-olds in Wales are overweight. Figures from Public | :13:51. | :13:56.
Health Wales show 26% of children due to start primary school way too | :13:57. | :14:00.
much for their age, with over one in ten classed as obese. Jordan Davies | :14:01. | :14:06.
has the story. Dylan and Evan definitely know the | :14:07. | :14:10.
importance of a good scoot. It helps keep them fit and active, and along | :14:11. | :14:13.
with plenty of fruit and vegetables and a healthy weight. They keep us | :14:14. | :14:20.
that, not the other way around! They are very much into all sorts of | :14:21. | :14:24.
sports. It is about them seeing what you are doing and encouraging them. | :14:25. | :14:28.
If you are active, they will be active. My favourite is carrots. You | :14:29. | :14:36.
like carrots? I like broccoli. But not everyone enjoys such a | :14:37. | :14:40.
healthy lifestyle. Public Health Wales measured the weight and height | :14:41. | :14:44.
of over 1000 children, starting primary school. 26%, more than a | :14:45. | :14:50.
quarter, were overweight, with 11% of those considered obese. Merthyr | :14:51. | :14:56.
Tydfil had the highest proportion of overweight children, with 34%. | :14:57. | :15:02.
Gwynedd and Bridgend had 30%, and the Vale of Glamorgan and | :15:03. | :15:07.
Monmouthshire had the lowest, with 22 and 21%. Public Health Wales said | :15:08. | :15:12.
it is about sweets and chocolate, but also money. | :15:13. | :15:16.
It is expensive. Some of these after-school activities cost a lot | :15:17. | :15:19.
of money, and if you come from a poorer area, a poorer family, where | :15:20. | :15:24.
there is in that much income in the family, the opportunities to be | :15:25. | :15:28.
active are limited. Experts say in activity is partly to | :15:29. | :15:32.
blame. It is the school holidays, and this football pitch near | :15:33. | :15:38.
Quaker's Yard, 20 years ago, would have been full of children kicking a | :15:39. | :15:42.
ball around. Now, there are other distractions like tablets, computer | :15:43. | :15:45.
games on the internet, while arguably, a bit safer, not as good | :15:46. | :15:51.
as burning sugar and fat. In this area here, is where I keep | :15:52. | :15:54.
my gym. One man who knows the value of | :15:55. | :15:58.
exercise and healthy food is Nathan Hewitt. When he was 13, he was 23 | :15:59. | :16:03.
stone. Now he helps others to lose weight. If, for example, I didn't | :16:04. | :16:09.
overeat at the age of five, and if my parents had been really harsh | :16:10. | :16:12.
with me, and horrible about it, and said no, you can't take that, I | :16:13. | :16:18.
would be thanking them right now at this age. For these children, this | :16:19. | :16:23.
is a simple game of tag. But experts say simple exercise like | :16:24. | :16:28.
this is often the difference between a healthy future or a lifetime of | :16:29. | :16:34.
overweight nests. In the last hour, BBC Wales has | :16:35. | :16:38.
discovered five people arrested in connection with a fraud | :16:39. | :16:41.
investigation work for a Gwynedd bus company. For men and a women who | :16:42. | :16:48.
work at Express Motors have now been released on bail while enquiries | :16:49. | :16:51.
take place. It takes place after several people were arrested | :16:52. | :16:54.
following a separate investigation into alleged fraud at another firm, | :16:55. | :16:58.
which went into voluntary liquidation in May. | :16:59. | :17:04.
Wales' biggest estate agent Peter Allen is to be sold by the building | :17:05. | :17:09.
society The Principality for almost ?6 million. The new owner has almost | :17:10. | :17:18.
500 branches across the UK, and also owns the Harris chain. The new staff | :17:19. | :17:22.
will transfer to the new company. The latest figures showing how money | :17:23. | :17:25.
people listen to the radio indicate that 438,000 people are tuning in to | :17:26. | :17:31.
BBC Radio Wales every week. That is 34,000 fewer than three months ago. | :17:32. | :17:37.
Around 147,000 people now June into BBC Radio Cumbria each week, up 4000 | :17:38. | :17:43.
on the last quarter. -- BBC Radio Cumbria. Leading | :17:44. | :17:47.
figures in the tourism industry are calling for a cut in VAT. Tourism | :17:48. | :17:52.
contributes billions of pounds the Welsh economy, but those in the | :17:53. | :17:55.
industry say the margins are tight, and they recommend a reduction from | :17:56. | :18:03.
20% to 7% to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe. | :18:04. | :18:08.
Wales has it all to offer as a holiday destination. That is the | :18:09. | :18:12.
message from the latest tourism advert. But marketing alone is not | :18:13. | :18:16.
enough. Leading figures in the industry say the margins are tight. | :18:17. | :18:20.
Mike Morgan is the owner of this hotel near Abergavenny. He explains | :18:21. | :18:25.
to me how a cut in VAT is needed to put them on a level playing field | :18:26. | :18:27.
with the rest of Europe. The economic argument is a given, | :18:28. | :18:32.
really. This would produce a large number of jobs, and there are plenty | :18:33. | :18:37.
of studies that show it would produce additional revenue for the | :18:38. | :18:40.
Treasury. I think we just have to bite the bullet and be brave in some | :18:41. | :18:43.
situations and make a real difference to the people of Wales, | :18:44. | :18:48.
and in this case, the UK. This activity centre in Brecon is | :18:49. | :18:51.
packed during the summer holidays with children making the most of the | :18:52. | :18:55.
high wire activities. But the owners here feel they are the ones walking | :18:56. | :19:00.
a financial tightrope. A cut in VAT means they could be more | :19:01. | :19:03.
competitive. Maybe we want to introduce a | :19:04. | :19:06.
brand-new type of activity, and that could cost is 10,000 or ?20,000 to | :19:07. | :19:11.
set up. It takes time to save that money. With a reduction, we could | :19:12. | :19:16.
save a bit more to reinvest in the industry. Tourism allows job | :19:17. | :19:20.
creation and income into very rural areas that no other industry can | :19:21. | :19:23.
really now achieve, not even farming in some areas, so it is incredibly | :19:24. | :19:28.
important, and as I say, 20% really puts Welsh rural tourism on an | :19:29. | :19:32.
unlevel playing field to some of their competitors abroad. | :19:33. | :19:36.
In Aberystwyth, where seafront hotels showed no vacancy signs and | :19:37. | :19:39.
holiday-makers make the most of the beach, this time of year is vital. | :19:40. | :19:45.
Tourism is one wales' largest industries, bringing in a vast | :19:46. | :19:51.
amount of money, and across the UK, it brings in billions of pounds the | :19:52. | :19:55.
Treasury as well. So how realistic is it to ask you large cut of ten or | :19:56. | :20:04.
15% in V8 T? Relying on VAT as a way of making life easier is not a | :20:05. | :20:11.
realistic way ahead at this moment. Because of the state of the national | :20:12. | :20:14.
finances still. So, businesses here will have to | :20:15. | :20:18.
rely on a busy summer so they can still hit their targets. | :20:19. | :20:21.
Speaking of which, let me take you back to the Commonwealth Games to | :20:22. | :20:24.
see how Wales are doing on day eight. Back to Clare in Glasgow. | :20:25. | :20:28.
Thank you, Jamie. Hello again. Let me bring you up to | :20:29. | :20:33.
date. First of all, some streets around the city of Glasgow were | :20:34. | :20:37.
closed after day as the cyclists took centre stage in the time trial. | :20:38. | :20:41.
Disappointment for Alan Barker and Amy Roberts in the women's race, but | :20:42. | :20:47.
in the men's, Geraint Thomas back in the saddle after finishing the Tour | :20:48. | :20:49.
de France showed few signs of fatty tooth claim a medal. -- signs of | :20:50. | :20:56.
fatigue. He'd knows how to win the biggest | :20:57. | :21:00.
races. The double Olympic champion Geraint Thomas looked relaxed ahead | :21:01. | :21:04.
of his race against the clock. Four days after finishing the toughest | :21:05. | :21:07.
race of all, the Tour de France, Geraint Thomas is ready to represent | :21:08. | :21:11.
Wales at his second Commonwealth Games. Underway here in Glasgow... | :21:12. | :21:18.
He has played down his chances. Fatty, he said would hamper his | :21:19. | :21:28.
chances of a medal. -- fatigue. At over 40 kilometres, Geraint Thomas | :21:29. | :21:30.
showed he was one of the favourites, but a faulty radio meant he was not | :21:31. | :21:34.
able to receive time checks from his team. He eventually finished 14 | :21:35. | :21:41.
seconds behind the winner, with the Australian rider second. I felt | :21:42. | :21:44.
strong, I didn't feel zippy and fresh, but just that sort of... Like | :21:45. | :21:50.
a diesel car, low revs, and you can go all day. It feels like I could do | :21:51. | :21:55.
it again now actually. I want a rerun! His team-mates might want | :21:56. | :22:00.
another go as well. Scott Davies from Carmarthen had to stop after | :22:01. | :22:04.
just 20 seconds, a problem with his back wheel. Luke Rowe encountered a | :22:05. | :22:10.
similar problem. Everything went wrong today. In an effort like that | :22:11. | :22:14.
where is quite close in quite a short distance, a couple of seconds | :22:15. | :22:17.
make a massive difference. When you have two stopped twice, that cost me | :22:18. | :22:25.
a lot of time, and after that, my head went. Geraint Thomas was last | :22:26. | :22:29.
at the Commonwealth Games eight years ago. Bronze on the track, but | :22:30. | :22:33.
now he has another, a proud moment for his girlfriend, who was | :22:34. | :22:36.
following in the team car throughout. He told it before, I am | :22:37. | :22:39.
not going to win, I'm not going to get the medal, I'm so tired. | :22:40. | :22:43.
So I thought, OK, I will just enjoy this then. Then I saw him getting | :22:44. | :22:58.
closer and silver on the track, but missed out on the road, finishing | :22:59. | :23:04.
seventh, while Amy Robert was 12. Geraint Thomas, supported by Luke | :23:05. | :23:07.
Rowe, will be back for the road race on Sunday. He says anything is | :23:08. | :23:11.
possible, and you would not bet against him reaching the podium | :23:12. | :23:14.
again after these Commonwealth Games. | :23:15. | :23:17.
Let me tell you, there are few bigger men in Team Wales then Darius | :23:18. | :23:22.
Joker 's ardour. He is six foot seven and weighs 24 stone. A short | :23:23. | :23:27.
time ago, he completed the final of the men's clean and jerk. At one | :23:28. | :23:32.
point, he was in contention for bronze. The 18-year-old from | :23:33. | :23:36.
Cardiff, 20 years younger than the Canadian winner, finished fourth in | :23:37. | :23:41.
the end, but what a future for Wales he has. Wales' boxers have five | :23:42. | :23:44.
medals in the bag. Four men are guaranteed at least | :23:45. | :23:49.
bronze, fighting again tomorrow. So does our only female fighter left in | :23:50. | :23:53.
the games. Lauren Price totally outclassed her Australian opponent | :23:54. | :23:56.
to guarantee at least a bronze in reaching the semifinals. A former | :23:57. | :24:01.
kick boxing World Champion at the age of 12, who has also played for | :24:02. | :24:06.
ball for Wales, will be the first Welsh woman to win a Commonwealth | :24:07. | :24:09.
Games medal in boxing. So, wales' Medel counter looks like | :24:10. | :24:14.
this tonight. Geraint Thomas' bronze takes the overall tally to 28. | :24:15. | :24:19.
Remember though, there are five more guaranteed medals from the boxing to | :24:20. | :24:24.
add. As things stand, Wales have for golds, ten Silvers, and 14 bronze. I | :24:25. | :24:30.
can tell you, Wales are currently 11th in the overall table, behind | :24:31. | :24:35.
Jamaica. Another bit of news. At Hampden Park tonight, Brett Morse is | :24:36. | :24:39.
currently going in the discus final. Here in Glasgow, a mixed day | :24:40. | :24:42.
weather-wise, but let's get the weather back home. | :24:43. | :24:46.
It has been mixed here in Wales as well. The last eight months have | :24:47. | :24:50.
been warmer than average, but it has all changed at the start of August. | :24:51. | :24:54.
Low pressure will bring is a cooler, wetter spell of weather, meaning | :24:55. | :24:58.
some heavy rain and showers. Sunday is better than Saturday, with some | :24:59. | :25:03.
sunshine. Showers today as we can see on the radar, heavy in parts of | :25:04. | :25:06.
the South this afternoon. Sunshine in the north and west. Generally | :25:07. | :25:11.
drier this evening and brighter, one or two showers. Overnight, plenty of | :25:12. | :25:16.
dry weather, but then rain will breach the south-west later on | :25:17. | :25:22.
tonight. Lowest temperature, 13 to 16 Celsius. At eight o'clock in the | :25:23. | :25:28.
morning, not a great start. The far south-east may be dry, but generally | :25:29. | :25:32.
cloudy, most of the country having rain and showers. The wind fairly | :25:33. | :25:36.
light, temperature is a little lower than today, 15 in Haverfordwest. | :25:37. | :25:45.
Showers and longer spells of rain, heavy showers and places too. Parts | :25:46. | :25:49.
of Anglesey may well get away with a dry afternoon. Cooler than today. | :25:50. | :25:53.
Temperature is than recent, with a low to moderate breeze. In | :25:54. | :25:58.
Ceredigion tomorrow, cloudy with outbreaks of rain. In Flintshire, a | :25:59. | :26:03.
similar story, cloudy with rain at times. A high of 18 Celsius in | :26:04. | :26:07.
Shotton with a light breeze. Tomorrow night and into Saturday, | :26:08. | :26:10.
more wet weather to come, heavy rain in the north and west, with a Met | :26:11. | :26:16.
Office warning in place. On Saturday, heavy rain in the north | :26:17. | :26:19.
and north-west should ease away gradually. Further south, drier and | :26:20. | :26:23.
brighter with a few showers. The reason for the heavy rain is an area | :26:24. | :26:27.
of low pressure which will move its way northwards across the UK during | :26:28. | :26:32.
the weekend. Sunday, a better day in prospect. Any showers in the North | :26:33. | :26:38.
gradually clear away. Elsewhere, sunny spells, and it should be | :26:39. | :26:43.
largely dry. Feeling fresh, with a westerly breeze, temperatures 17 to | :26:44. | :26:48.
20 Celsius. So, not great whether by any means if you are on holiday, but | :26:49. | :26:52.
some welcome rain for the gardens. On Sunday, we will see the best day | :26:53. | :26:57.
of the weekend if you have any outdoor plans. Next week, sunny | :26:58. | :27:00.
spells and some showers. During Wednesday, a front will move | :27:01. | :27:04.
eastwards, bringing some rain. So, all change for the start of August, | :27:05. | :27:09.
but some sunshine on Sunday. It is coming up to seven o'clock. | :27:10. | :27:13.
Tonight headlines: The American billionaire who is buying the Murco | :27:14. | :27:16.
oil refinery and Milford Haven says all 400 staff will keep their jobs. | :27:17. | :27:21.
Today, the Klesch Group confirmed it will invest tens of millions of | :27:22. | :27:24.
pounds into the plant. Developers have pulled the plug is | :27:25. | :27:28.
on plans free massive wind farm 12 miles off the coast of Anglesey, | :27:29. | :27:33.
which it is claimed could have powered 1.70 Ian Holmes. | :27:34. | :27:38.
I will have an update for you after the news at ten. You can e-mail us | :27:39. | :27:43. |
