events in Paris tonight, eye Will. Our shouts --

:00:00.:00:00.

A promise that 90% of the country will have mobile

:00:00.:00:08.

And despite two goals, a disappointing start for

:00:09.:00:14.

Mobile phone coverage across Wales is set for big improvements over the

:00:15.:00:36.

next few years, but many of us will still be left without a signal.

:00:37.:00:40.

Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator, says phone companies

:00:41.:00:43.

should deliver call coverage to 90% of the country by 2017.

:00:44.:00:48.

But there's concern in rural parts of Wales that they

:00:49.:00:51.

will be the ones left behind, with calls for Government intervention.

:00:52.:00:55.

They've changed the way we live our lives, a revolution sitting

:00:56.:01:05.

Put simply, we've come to rely on our mobile phones.

:01:06.:01:10.

That's why we get so cross when they don't work.

:01:11.:01:17.

In September, we spoke to Wayne Evans in Newtown.

:01:18.:01:19.

Mobile coverage there was falling well short

:01:20.:01:21.

Today, representatives of the big four operators -

:01:22.:01:25.

O2, EE, Vodafone and Three - were in Newtown

:01:26.:01:28.

to meet people from across mid Wales.

:01:29.:01:31.

There have been improvements, they said.

:01:32.:01:34.

So we asked Wayne, how much have things changed

:01:35.:01:36.

It's still the same issues still ongoing.

:01:37.:01:41.

Signal dropping, calls being dropped,

:01:42.:01:43.

text messages not coming through. It's the same.

:01:44.:01:47.

Here in Newtown, the mobile companies insist that

:01:48.:01:51.

Signals are getting a boost, apparently.

:01:52.:01:54.

But it's in the countryside that the real problem persists.

:01:55.:01:58.

There, you can't improve coverage by simply flicking a switch.

:01:59.:02:03.

It all boils down to geography and population.

:02:04.:02:05.

The companies make their cash by selling their contracts.

:02:06.:02:08.

There is little incentive to put up masts where few people live.

:02:09.:02:13.

In geographical terms, that leaves much of rural Wales

:02:14.:02:16.

A third of two Welsh counties, Powys and Ceredigion,

:02:17.:02:20.

still don't have any form of coverage.

:02:21.:02:23.

Now we are told that by the end of 2017, you will be able to make

:02:24.:02:28.

calls from 90% of the land area of Wales, and 95% of us will have

:02:29.:02:32.

Even if you meet your 2017 commitments,

:02:33.:02:38.

there will still be lots of people living in rural Wales who

:02:39.:02:41.

We have an obligation to roll out to 98% of the population of the UK, and

:02:42.:02:50.

There is a role for government, especially when it comes to making

:02:51.:02:55.

There is also a role for Ofcom, the regulator, when they issue

:02:56.:03:02.

licensing, that they take into account that rural areas

:03:03.:03:05.

It seems most of us in Wales will see great improvement in

:03:06.:03:10.

our mobile coverage over the next few years, but there will remain

:03:11.:03:13.

quite a few of us caught on the wrong side of this great

:03:14.:03:16.

A cub scout leader who used the internet to prey on young girls

:03:17.:03:23.

has been given a 10 year sentence at Cardiff Crown Court.

:03:24.:03:26.

He was caught by police as he booked into a Bridgend hotel

:03:27.:03:29.

The judge said Scott Nicholls, from Taunton,

:03:30.:03:33.

Described by the prosecution today as predatory and persistent,

:03:34.:03:43.

these images show the moment Scott Nicholls booked into a

:03:44.:03:46.

Premier Inn in Bridgend, believing he would meet a 12-year-old girl he

:03:47.:03:49.

In fact, it was an undercover officer who was waiting.

:03:50.:03:56.

His arrest led police to uncover a mass of material,

:03:57.:03:59.

in all, more than 2,000 indecent images.

:04:00.:04:03.

They also discovered that he had shared 860 of these online.

:04:04.:04:08.

In all, he pleaded guilty to 19 offences, including possessing

:04:09.:04:12.

and distributing indecent pictures and videos,

:04:13.:04:16.

The prosecution told the court that Nicholls had volunteered to work

:04:17.:04:22.

at the London Olympics, and in his hometown of Taunton, he had been

:04:23.:04:27.

a cub scout leader and an ambulance care assistant, all activities which

:04:28.:04:31.

could have brought him into contact with children.

:04:32.:04:35.

In another disturbing twist, the prosecution said he had filmed

:04:36.:04:39.

videos of children around his hometown.

:04:40.:04:42.

He was caught by specialist South Wales police officers who uncovered

:04:43.:04:46.

e-mails and online posts he had sent to girls as young as ten.

:04:47.:04:51.

Today, the police said the commitment of the team had

:04:52.:04:53.

ensured that he was detained before an innocent child was ever abused.

:04:54.:04:58.

Sentencing him, the judge said he posed a high risk of serious harm to

:04:59.:05:03.

children, and it was a worrying aspect of the case that he was both

:05:04.:05:07.

a scoutmaster and had volunteered for the Ambulance Service.

:05:08.:05:12.

Of the ten year sentence, up to six will be behind bars,

:05:13.:05:16.

after which he may be considered for parole, but would remain

:05:17.:05:19.

And he will be placed on the sex offenders' register.

:05:20.:05:27.

Anyone using the Severn crossings will have to

:05:28.:05:29.

The price for cars rises 10p to ?6.60.

:05:30.:05:37.

And HGVs and buses will pay ?19.80, up 20p.

:05:38.:05:41.

The new tolls are confirmed every year in a Parliamentary Order,

:05:42.:05:44.

Businesses in Wales can benefit from the construction of a new

:05:45.:05:49.

That's according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

:05:50.:05:55.

Hinkley Point C, which is only 14 miles across the Bristol Channel

:05:56.:05:59.

from Barry, will cost ?18 billion pounds and create 25,000 jobs.

:06:00.:06:05.

But there are concerns that many small building firms won't tender

:06:06.:06:08.

for business because of how long it takes to get paid.

:06:09.:06:13.

Football, and it's been a disappointing night

:06:14.:06:18.

for Wales in their friendly against the Netherlands.

:06:19.:06:20.

They lost 2-3 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

:06:21.:06:22.

They have never had it so good. For these younger fans, all they have

:06:23.:06:35.

seen his success, and with qualification for the Euro

:06:36.:06:38.

Championships already guaranteed, Wales are confident. It's all right.

:06:39.:06:47.

Great. I don't know what else to say. We are really excited about

:06:48.:06:52.

tonight. It may only be a friendly, but Wales see it is vital operation

:06:53.:06:58.

for Euro 2016, a chance to test new players. And on his first start for

:06:59.:07:02.

Wales, Tom Lawrence got into his stride with a couple of early

:07:03.:07:05.

opportunities. The Netherlands have the best of the chances early on,

:07:06.:07:10.

and when this cross found that forward, all six foot five of him,

:07:11.:07:15.

the visitors were ahead. With the game heading for half-time, there

:07:16.:07:19.

was a bonus for Wales, a handball by the Netherlands. Johann Lamont took

:07:20.:07:25.

on the responsibility -- Joe Allen took on the responsibility of the

:07:26.:07:29.

resulting penalty. The rebound found Joe Ledley, his first international

:07:30.:07:34.

goal for five years. Having failed to qualify for Euro 2016, the

:07:35.:07:39.

Netherlands are rebuilding, and Arjen Robben lead by example. He

:07:40.:07:43.

danced past the Wales defence to find the net, 2-1. The second half

:07:44.:07:49.

saw a raft of substitutions. Chris Coleman promised to give some

:07:50.:07:53.

younger players experience at this level, and 20-year-old Jordan

:07:54.:07:56.

Williams nearly repaid his manager. But it would be another substitute

:07:57.:08:01.

who trained the headlines, a night he will never forget. His powerful

:08:02.:08:05.

header left the goalkeeper with no chance. But the threat from the

:08:06.:08:09.

Netherlands never went away, and Arjen Robben had the last word. An

:08:10.:08:12.

entertaining game, but a first defeat for Wales at this stadium for

:08:13.:08:17.

two years. We were up against a tough team, almost a wounded animal.

:08:18.:08:22.

They are much rebuilding, Holland. It was a good performance by them,

:08:23.:08:26.

but it was not too shabby by us also. We were trying to hurt them.

:08:27.:08:33.

There were plenty of positives for Chris Coleman. The younger players

:08:34.:08:37.

had an opportunity to shine. He will see it as a useful exercise as he

:08:38.:08:40.

continues his preparations for the European Championships next June.

:08:41.:08:42.

And events have been taking place across Wales for Children In Need.

:08:43.:08:45.

Earlier, Pudsey Bear was spotted by some budding reporters

:08:46.:08:48.

in Llandudno, and schools across the country have been playing

:08:49.:08:50.

So far, the total donated here in Wales stands at ?412,000.

:08:51.:09:02.

What's the weather got in store for us this weekend? Derek's here.

:09:03.:09:09.

I think Pudsey will need his waterproofs this weekend. There is

:09:10.:09:14.

more wet and windy weather on the way. Heavy rain and gale force

:09:15.:09:18.

winds. Just a few showers tonight, most places becoming dry for a

:09:19.:09:23.

while, the wind easing. A chilly night, more rain reaching

:09:24.:09:26.

Pembrokeshire by the end of the night. Tomorrow, rain will spill

:09:27.:09:29.

across the whole country. During the morning, the wind is picking up. The

:09:30.:09:35.

rain is heaviest over high ground, particularly parts of mood and north

:09:36.:09:40.

Wales, with an amber warning in Snowdonia. Across the rest of the

:09:41.:09:45.

UK, where -- rain will spread across the Atlantic, heaviest across the

:09:46.:09:49.

high ground in north Wales and north-west England. The wind is

:09:50.:09:55.

picking up as well. The north will be dry and bright and colder. In

:09:56.:10:01.

Wales tomorrow afternoon, it is looking windy, with more rain and

:10:02.:10:06.

drizzle, the rain heaviest on the high ground in mid and north Wales,

:10:07.:10:09.

accompanied by strong to gale force winds. So some very heavy rainfall

:10:10.:10:19.

on the high ground of north Wales and north-west England this weekend.

:10:20.:10:23.

An amber warning in force. We could see a hundred millimetres or more

:10:24.:10:26.

falling in Snowdonia, with flooding in places. Tomorrow night, it will

:10:27.:10:31.

continue to be windy, with further outbreaks of rain and grizzle. Heavy

:10:32.:10:37.

rain in parts of mid Wales. Temperature is above average, but

:10:38.:10:40.

not feeling that mild in the strong winds. Extra week, there is more

:10:41.:10:46.

rain on the way. Rivers will continue to rise, so there is a risk

:10:47.:10:50.

of significant flooding by next week. Take care and keep up-to-date

:10:51.:10:53.

with the forecast over the weekend. Our next update is

:10:54.:10:55.

at 6.40 tomorrow evening. From all of us on the programme,

:10:56.:10:58.

have a great weekend.

:10:59.:11:02.
