Our top stories: They failed to show compassion and humanity.

:00:00.:00:00.

A judge jails two nurses for wilfully neglecting

:00:07.:00:09.

A third nurse is given community service.

:00:10.:00:15.

And Labour's heavyweights launch the party's campaign to keep Wales

:00:16.:00:17.

Two nurses have been jailed for wilful neglect after

:00:18.:00:40.

they admitted failing to carry out blood tests on patients,

:00:41.:00:43.

Rebecca Jones and Lauro Bertalano worked on a specialist stroke ward

:00:44.:00:48.

at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

:00:49.:00:51.

A third nurse was given a community sentence.

:00:52.:00:54.

It was here on Ward 2 at Bridgend's Princess

:00:55.:00:59.

of Wales Hospital that three nurses carried out what the judge called

:01:00.:01:02.

a clear-eyed and calculated deception, resulting

:01:03.:01:05.

Most of the patients had suffered strokes and as a result needed

:01:06.:01:11.

regular monitoring of their blood glucose.

:01:12.:01:13.

For a year, starting in February 2012, three nurses made

:01:14.:01:19.

Uncontrolled, the stroke patient's diabetes could have led to brain,

:01:20.:01:24.

Rebecca Jones, 31, was the most senior nurse involved.

:01:25.:01:35.

She arrived at court today knowing she faced a jail sentence

:01:36.:01:38.

for the wilful neglect of nine patients in her care.

:01:39.:01:40.

Her colleague, 46-year-old Bertulano admitted the wilful neglect

:01:41.:01:42.

I would like to apologise for what I have done.

:01:43.:01:47.

Natalie Jones had falsified the records of two patients.

:01:48.:01:50.

Lillian Williams was one of the patients affected.

:01:51.:01:53.

She was 82 when she died in November 2012.

:01:54.:01:58.

Seen here in happier times on a family holiday,

:01:59.:02:01.

she had been admitted to Bridgend in September of that year

:02:02.:02:03.

and her family were immediately critical of the care

:02:04.:02:06.

In total the three nurses based at this hospital made 81 false

:02:07.:02:12.

readings involving nine patients, which included Lillian Williams.

:02:13.:02:16.

On one day three consecutive tests of her blood glucose were false

:02:17.:02:19.

entries, meaning she went 26 hours between legitimate testing.

:02:20.:02:24.

Her family say their claims were met with incredulous silence.

:02:25.:02:27.

Her son said the nurses were too arrogant to care.

:02:28.:02:34.

Her daughter said she had suffered a travesty of neglect.

:02:35.:02:41.

To hear all of the witness statements today, from the relatives

:02:42.:02:44.

talking about the way that their loved ones suffered

:02:45.:02:51.

at the hands of these nurses, that's been devastating for us.

:02:52.:02:53.

The health board say a review they carried out once these issues

:02:54.:02:56.

came to light found no evidence that any patient had received actual harm

:02:57.:03:00.

but acknowledged some short-term discomfort.

:03:01.:03:02.

They apologised to the families for any distressed caused

:03:03.:03:04.

and confirmed that internal proceedings are going ahead with 12

:03:05.:03:08.

Now that the judicial process is over, we want to look into this

:03:09.:03:17.

in more detail and I am sure the police will cooperate with us

:03:18.:03:19.

in looking at the evidence they have gathered and we will do a much more

:03:20.:03:23.

in-depth review to make sure that we understand fully and in much

:03:24.:03:26.

If there are any lessons, we will make sure we learn them.

:03:27.:03:31.

In sentencing the nurses, the judge said this was a failure

:03:32.:03:34.

Speaking to Rebecca Jones, he said she may have been unhappy

:03:35.:03:43.

at work but to put patients at risk, that was not a rational response.

:03:44.:03:48.

He jailed her for eight months, with Lauro Bertulano receiving

:03:49.:03:50.

Natalie Jones received a community order.

:03:51.:03:54.

As the sentence was handed down there was a round of applause

:03:55.:03:57.

from families and the public gallery.

:03:58.:04:05.

Labour's been accused of making outlandish and ludicrous claims

:04:06.:04:07.

about the threat to Wales if Britain leaves the European Union.

:04:08.:04:12.

Senior party figures launched their campaign to remain

:04:13.:04:13.

in the EU, warning that Wales had most to lose from a withdrawal

:04:14.:04:17.

because of its reliance on European aid.

:04:18.:04:22.

Here's our political editor Nick Servini.

:04:23.:04:28.

There could be plenty of turbulence ahead in the EU referendum campaign.

:04:29.:04:33.

If the UK votes to leave, Labour warned today there would be

:04:34.:04:36.

Senior figures were at an aerospace college near Cardiff Airport

:04:37.:04:44.

to hammer home their claims that up to 200,000 jobs and hundreds

:04:45.:04:47.

This is a wake-up call to every citizen in Wales

:04:48.:04:55.

that we could sleepwalk out of Europe, and that would be more

:04:56.:04:59.

damaging to Wales than any other part of Britain.

:05:00.:05:06.

We are the ones who benefit the most from the European Union.

:05:07.:05:09.

This was a series of warnings that was designed to generate

:05:10.:05:12.

full-on fear among the public about the withdrawal from the EU.

:05:13.:05:16.

At one stage, the First Minister even suggested that something

:05:17.:05:22.

as fundamental as our system of farming could come to an end.

:05:23.:05:26.

If there is concern among people, it could work.

:05:27.:05:30.

But opponents are hoping it will just be seen as scaremongering.

:05:31.:05:36.

I think this is an opening salvo on behalf of the Ministry

:05:37.:05:39.

These are quite ludicrous statements.

:05:40.:05:47.

It is a crucial time as we edge closer to the referendum.

:05:48.:05:50.

David Cameron will be in Brussels this week,

:05:51.:05:57.

trying to renegotiate Britain's membership of the EU.

:05:58.:05:59.

The central issue is reform of the benefits available

:06:00.:06:01.

Europe is a potential minefield for the Conservatives.

:06:02.:06:04.

Their official position will only become apparent once

:06:05.:06:07.

The Welsh Secretary claimed he would be pragmatic

:06:08.:06:13.

in the campaign, before giving this response to Labour.

:06:14.:06:17.

We have heard all of the wild claims made before, 15 years ago,

:06:18.:06:20.

when Labour was trying to bounce Britain into joining

:06:21.:06:23.

15 years on, we are glad we have not because that would

:06:24.:06:30.

Soon, it will not just be the politicians having

:06:31.:06:34.

Expect the debate to intensify as speculation grows

:06:35.:06:38.

that the referendum will be held in the summer or autumn,

:06:39.:06:41.

The father of a soldier from Llangollen who died

:06:42.:06:47.

at the Deepcut army barracks in 1995 has attacked the Ministry of Defence

:06:48.:06:51.

for failing to disclose information ahead of a fresh

:06:52.:06:53.

18-year-old Private Cheryl James was one of four soldiers to die

:06:54.:06:57.

at the base, amid claims of bullying.

:06:58.:07:00.

Lawyers for the MOD say it's dealing with thousands of files

:07:01.:07:04.

and will hand over the documents next month.

:07:05.:07:09.

A proposal to build more than 360 homes near Bangor has been rejected

:07:10.:07:12.

by the local authority despite being recommended by planners.

:07:13.:07:16.

The land at Penrhosgarnedd is considered suitable for housing,

:07:17.:07:18.

but Gwynedd councillors say the schools nearby couldn't cope

:07:19.:07:21.

with such a large development, and that it could harm the Welsh

:07:22.:07:24.

After 13 years in development Wales's first tidal turbine

:07:25.:07:32.

The Giant Daffodil, as it's been dubbed, was lowered 30

:07:33.:07:37.

metres onto the seabed near Ramsey Sound,

:07:38.:07:42.

It will now undergo tests before it can begin generating power

:07:43.:07:47.

Benhaz has tonight's weather forecast.

:07:48.:07:57.

Yes, but not as much as last week. We have more wet and windy weather

:07:58.:08:03.

to come tomorrow but it will be much milder as we go through the weekend

:08:04.:08:07.

we will start to drag in a much milder air from the South as is

:08:08.:08:12.

demonstrated on this graphic. The air across Scotland is still pretty

:08:13.:08:16.

cold tomorrow but the warmer air is pushing to the north and

:08:17.:08:19.

temperatures well above the average for the time of year. We still have

:08:20.:08:23.

a few shower was will fizzle away and overnight should be dry. We see

:08:24.:08:26.

low-level cloud and mist and fog and it is

:08:27.:08:40.

still a bit chilly but well above the average for the time of year. We

:08:41.:08:43.

have a very unsettled day tomorrow thanks to the area of low pressure

:08:44.:08:45.

bringing wet and windy weather with it from the word go. There is mist

:08:46.:08:48.

and fog around and the wind pick up from the south-east by hints of

:08:49.:08:55.

brightness. Gradually be the rain band coming up from the south-west.

:08:56.:09:02.

This band of rain is spreading to the north-east and bringing much

:09:03.:09:07.

wilder -- milder weather with it. Tomorrow afternoon in Wales it will

:09:08.:09:11.

be a soggy afternoon of that rain band pushes its way through. Gale

:09:12.:09:16.

force winds along the coast and behind the rain band we have more

:09:17.:09:20.

rain coming in. Temperatures in double figures for most of us. Where

:09:21.:09:25.

and windy to come tomorrow night but very mild. The rain will ease by the

:09:26.:09:30.

early hours of Wednesday morning. We hang on to come tomorrow night but

:09:31.:09:33.

very mild. The rain will ease by the early hours of Wednesday morning. We

:09:34.:09:36.

hang onto to cloud and mist and fog temperatures nine to 12. Wednesday

:09:37.:09:40.

is another unsettled day. Wet and windy and the rain will push through

:09:41.:09:43.

with hints of brightness before we see another band of rain coming in

:09:44.:09:47.

from the West. Keep your umbrella to hand.

:09:48.:09:50.

From all of us on the programme good night.

:09:51.:10:05.

What do we do with something like this?

:10:06.:10:11.
