Four people have been arrested in connection with a fire

at a primary school in Torfaen.

The blaze broke out at Coed Eva school, in Cwmbran, on New Year's

Day.

A joint investigation by police and the fire service is continuing

to try to establish the cause.

Carys Notley reports.

Surveying the damage, one day on.

The infant and nursery section of this primary school gutted

in a blaze which broke out in the early hours of New Year's

Day.

10 fire crews battled for hours to bring the fire at Coed Eva school

under control and stop it spreading to the junior building,

also on the site.

Children, parents and teachers say they're devastated.

These parents have set up a crowd funding page to help pay

for new school supplies, already raising more than 2,000.

I went to the school.

That was the main reason that I wanted my children to go there.

I've obviously got my eldest now, who's in Year 1, and my youngest,

who's due to start in September.

But it's the memories that come with it, it's not just a building,

it's not just a school.

Just seeing the heartbreak in my daughter when I told her that she no

longer has a school, knowing that all their work is gone.

It's really important that we get these donations in because these

children have lost everything, as you can see.

Myself, as a parent, I want to do everything that

I possibly can for this school.

The school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday when meetings will be

held to try and establish when it can re-open.

There are two major factors at the moment.

One is, safeguarding of the site, which we are waiting to establish

so that children can travel to and from school safely.

The other one is, power on the main junior building.

My intention is to have all our children under one roof

and we're going to do as much as we can to establish that

so that our children again can keep their circle of friends

and keep the familiarity with their teachers.

Four people have now been arrested and bailed as part of a joint

criminal investigation by Gwent Police and South Wales Fire

Service.

As the police investigation into the cause of the fire

continues, the focus here now shifts into getting this school up

and running as soon as possible.

Campaigners have criticised the increase in regulated rail

tickets across Wales, England and Scotland by an average

of 1.1% today.

It's the smallest increase in six years, but critics say the quality

of some services doesn't justify any rise.

The Welsh Government says it recognises the importance

of maintaining affordable rail fares and has restricted the permitted

increase in fares on the Wales and Borders franchise.

We don't think it's fair.

Passengers are being harmed in the wallet, too hard.

Prices in the real world are not going up.

Inflation is virtually stagnant and yet, compared to oil prices

as well, you know, the motorists are not experiencing a rise

into fuel duty, yet rail passengers are and that's just not far.

I think it's reasonable given that costs have gone up.

I mean, the train companies who operate diesel trains

in particular have done quite well in recent months

as prices have fallen.

So their fuel costs are down, but their wage costs are up

and various other maintenance costs continue to go up.

Football, and Swansea City were hoping to beat

Manchester United for the fourth successive time

in the Premier League, but they lost 2-1 at Old Trafford today.

United captain, Wayne Rooney, scored the winning goal 13 minutes

before the final whistle, ending their run of eight games

without a win.

I think the setup, we were comfortable with the shape

of the diamond at the start of the game but, obviously,

once you go a goal behind, then you've got to try

and do things differently.

Yeah, we put two wingers on.

I thought Mo was excellent, Mo Barrow.

As I say, we almost pinched a point at the end.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City boosted their play-off hopes

by beating Blackburn 1-0 to claim a first win in four

Championship matches.

They're now ninth in the table.

Wrexham were beaten 3-2 away by Southport in the National League.

But Newport County's game against Hartlepool was called off

because of a waterlogged pitch.

The Cardiff Devils play their first fixture of the year later at home

against the Dundee Stars.

The Devils finished 20-15 at the top of Ice Hockey's Elite League

as they aim to be crowned Champions for the first time.

The side are hoping for their fourth successive win tonight.
