Tonight's headlines: A world first for Wales, work starts to transform | :00:00. | :00:07.
an empty factory on Anglesey into a green energy plant that | :00:08. | :00:11.
And it was the biggest "crash for cash" insurance fraud scam ever | :00:12. | :00:17.
seen in Wales, a further five people are sentenced. | :00:18. | :00:35.
Work is starting on a billion pound combined food and power plant | :00:36. | :00:39.
at the former Anglesey Aluminium site on Anglesey. | :00:40. | :00:42.
It could create more than seventeen hundred jobs. | :00:43. | :00:45.
And as our economics correspondent Sarah Dickins explains, | :00:46. | :00:48.
the technology is being described as a world first. | :00:49. | :00:54.
It dominated the area and the economy for decades. | :00:55. | :00:56.
More than 1,000 people worked at Anglesey Aluminium at its peak. | :00:57. | :01:00.
Derelict for three years, it's about to be transformed so this | :01:01. | :01:04.
It's the result of an engineer and architect developing | :01:05. | :01:11.
We need to put mechanisms in the world that are going to get | :01:12. | :01:16.
us out of the quagmire we are in and this is the solution. | :01:17. | :01:19.
Use the heat, use the power, combine it with the food, | :01:20. | :01:22.
Waste wood would be burnt to generate electricity for homes. | :01:23. | :01:29.
Rather than lose excess heat up the chimneys, | :01:30. | :01:31.
Orthios would use it to warm water to farm prawns. | :01:32. | :01:35.
Their waste in the water will act as a fertiliser for | :01:36. | :01:38.
growing vegetables as will spare CO2. | :01:39. | :01:41.
Steve Mallon worked for many years at Anglesey Aluminium. | :01:42. | :01:44.
It was a hot, heavy and dirty industry. | :01:45. | :01:48.
But now we are onto this completely new venture. | :01:49. | :01:55.
The is mind boggling, some of what they are telling us. | :01:56. | :01:58.
Plans offer 1200 construction workers to transform the site | :01:59. | :02:02.
while 500 people will have permanent jobs producing power and food. | :02:03. | :02:06.
Communities right across the island were shaken when | :02:07. | :02:09.
But if these plans come to be there will be a new industry | :02:10. | :02:15.
here, not just power but food as well and people from around | :02:16. | :02:18.
the world will come here to understand | :02:19. | :02:21.
But at a moment the challenge to develop the energy sector | :02:22. | :02:25.
Energy Island may seem like a remote concept but for people living | :02:26. | :02:31.
here it could be the difference between work and no work. | :02:32. | :02:34.
Part-time employment and a long-term career. | :02:35. | :02:38.
What's important about this development is it's the first | :02:39. | :02:40.
significant renewal project that looks like it's going ahead. | :02:41. | :02:44.
There's a drive to make sure as much work as possible goes to local | :02:45. | :02:48.
We have to try and make sure that the right kind of training | :02:49. | :02:53.
provision is available to young people in particular and equip them | :02:54. | :02:56.
with the appropriate skills so that they do take advantage | :02:57. | :02:59.
As the site takes on a new life many will be watching its progress. | :03:00. | :03:04.
The family of Sian Davies from Tregaron who died | :03:05. | :03:06.
while being the member of a cult in London, | :03:07. | :03:09.
have said they'd like a new inquest into her death. | :03:10. | :03:13.
She died after falling out of a house window. | :03:14. | :03:15.
The call by her cousin, Eleri Morgan, is on the day cult | :03:16. | :03:18.
leader Aravindan Balakrishnan was sentenced to 23 years | :03:19. | :03:21.
for a string of six assaults, and for keeping his and Sian's | :03:22. | :03:24.
daughter, Katy Morgan Davies, captive for three decades. | :03:25. | :03:29.
I want to get on and get to know Katy a lot better. | :03:30. | :03:34.
To take her to Wales and to see where her mother | :03:35. | :03:38.
So, perhaps, Comrade Bala will find how it feels to be locked behind | :03:39. | :03:46.
The father of an 18-year-old army recruit from Llangollen, | :03:47. | :03:52.
who was found dead at Deepcut Barracks in Surrey more | :03:53. | :03:55.
than 20 years ago, hopes a second inquest will uncover | :03:56. | :03:58.
Cheryl James was one of four soldiers found dead at the barracks | :03:59. | :04:02.
between 1995 and 2002 amid claims of widespread abuse. | :04:03. | :04:06.
The new inquest will start on Monday. | :04:07. | :04:11.
I'm sure most fathers, if not all fathers, of kids, | :04:12. | :04:17.
girls of that age anyway, there is a protective | :04:18. | :04:19.
instinct that you feel, that is my job, that is | :04:20. | :04:22.
I shouldn't have left her there alone. | :04:23. | :04:26.
More people are surviving strokes in Wales compared with a decade ago | :04:27. | :04:29.
A temporary housing centre where asylum seekers had to wear | :04:30. | :04:32.
coloured wristbands in order to receive their meals is to be | :04:33. | :04:34.
The council say the Fire Service has raised concerns about overcrowding | :04:35. | :04:38.
The Home Office says it takes every effort to inspect all asylum | :04:39. | :04:42.
accommodation on a regular basis to ensure that it meets | :04:43. | :04:44.
The company that runs Lynx House on behalf of the Home Office | :04:45. | :04:49.
scrapped the red wristbands last week. | :04:50. | :04:55.
More people are surviving strokes in Wales compared with a decade ago | :04:56. | :04:58.
It found, around a thousand fewer people die every year, | :04:59. | :05:01.
due to better services which prevent and treat strokes. | :05:02. | :05:04.
But it highlights areas for improvement such as the support | :05:05. | :05:06.
for patients after they've been discharged. | :05:07. | :05:11.
It was the largest "crash for cash" insurance fraud case ever | :05:12. | :05:14.
Today it ended with five people being sentenced to nearly four years | :05:15. | :05:18.
in prison for their part in the scam, bringing the total | :05:19. | :05:21.
number of people brought to justice to 81. | :05:22. | :05:23.
The two men and three women from Newport, Cardiff | :05:24. | :05:26.
and Caerphilly County Borough fraudulently claimed around | :05:27. | :05:29.
The more police delved into this giant conspiracy, | :05:30. | :05:37.
the wider the web of fraudsters became. | :05:38. | :05:41.
And today the remaining five were brought to justice. | :05:42. | :05:45.
One of them, Stephen Pegram, already serving a five year | :05:46. | :05:47.
sentence in prison, claimed thousands. | :05:48. | :05:51.
In total, 81 people from Caerphilly County Borough, | :05:52. | :05:54.
Cardiff and Newport were convicted for defrauding insurance companies | :05:55. | :05:58.
out of three quarters of a million pounds. | :05:59. | :06:01.
At the start we had no idea this fraud was on going. | :06:02. | :06:04.
We were looking for stolen vehicles and it turned into one | :06:05. | :06:09.
of the biggest insurers frauds, if not the biggest, the UK police | :06:10. | :06:12.
The police descended on the conspiracy's HQ, | :06:13. | :06:19.
a small lock-up garage in Pengam near Blackwood. | :06:20. | :06:22.
Only then did they discover the extent of the fraud. | :06:23. | :06:26.
Cars were being deliberately damaged, like this one, | :06:27. | :06:29.
And then the owners were coached into what to say to insurers | :06:30. | :06:34.
Gwent Police are calling on insurers to do more to make sure the damage | :06:35. | :06:41.
on one car matches the damage on another. | :06:42. | :06:45.
This draws to an end one of the largest fraud trial | :06:46. | :06:51.
Such was the scale of the investigation that Gwent Police | :06:52. | :06:55.
has built up a body of expertise in this area. | :06:56. | :06:58.
They now hope others will be deterred from | :06:59. | :07:01.
Swansea City have completed the signing of Chievo striker | :07:02. | :07:11.
Alberto Paloschi for an undisclosed fee, subject to | :07:12. | :07:14.
The 26-year-old, who will wear the number nine shirt, | :07:15. | :07:18.
has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at the Liberty Stadium. | :07:19. | :07:26.
The Dragons have won their first game in the Pro12 since December, | :07:27. | :07:29.
after they beat Leinster 23-13 at Rodney Parade. | :07:30. | :07:31.
It was a great start for the Dragons, as wing | :07:32. | :07:33.
Ashton Hewitt crossed over for the first try in the third | :07:34. | :07:36.
Leinster fought back but it wasn't enough to beat the home team. | :07:37. | :07:40.
Strong winds are causing problems of the M4 tonight. | :07:41. | :07:42.
The westbound carriageway is closed after an overhead sign, | :07:43. | :07:45.
between junction 24 Coldra and junction 28 Tredegar, | :07:46. | :07:50.
Traffic is very slow on the approach. | :07:51. | :07:55.
Drivers are advised to use the A48 to rejoin the motorway. | :07:56. | :08:01.
Well, Derek's here, are these winds likely to ease at all? | :08:02. | :08:08.
Yes, they will. Storm Gertrude is moving away but a sting in her tail | :08:09. | :08:19.
to night with heavy rain and winds. We do have a Met Office warning in | :08:20. | :08:24.
force for heavy rain, that covers much of mid and south Wales. A risk | :08:25. | :08:29.
of localised flooding. The rain will continue for the next hour or so | :08:30. | :08:35.
before clearing. Then we've got showers overnight. Turning cold at | :08:36. | :08:40.
night, temperatures in Wrexham dropping down to three Celsius. That | :08:41. | :08:43.
is the risk of icy patches in the north tomorrow morning. Otherwise, a | :08:44. | :08:48.
much better morning compared to today. Dreyer, writer, some | :08:49. | :08:54.
sunshine. Across the rest of the UK, warnings are reinforced across the | :08:55. | :08:58.
north for ice, gales, snow and blizzards in Scotland. Further | :08:59. | :09:03.
south, fewer showers. Sunny spells. Breezy in the south, stronger winds | :09:04. | :09:07.
in the north. Everywhere colder than today. This too long, mixture of | :09:08. | :09:13.
sunny spells and scattered showers tomorrow afternoon. Wintry showers | :09:14. | :09:20.
inland. Temperatures in single figures with a brisk westerly wind. | :09:21. | :09:25.
Tomorrow evening, one or two showers but otherwise dry for a time. Rain | :09:26. | :09:29.
will spread from the south-west after midnight falling as snow on | :09:30. | :09:33.
high ground. A cold snap this weekend but short lived because | :09:34. | :09:38.
milder air will follow from the south-west during Sunday. On Sunday, | :09:39. | :09:42.
it is all change. Rain, drizzle, hill fog. The wind came up again. | :09:43. | :09:49.
Saturday the best day of the weekend. More rain and strong winds | :09:50. | :09:50.
on Monday. We're back with our next update | :09:51. | :09:51.
at 5.50pm tomorrow evening. From all of us here, | :09:52. | :09:55.
have a good weekend. | :09:56. | :09:58. |
