debate - with a week to go before polling day we'll

The leaders of the main parties at the assembly have clashed over

health in the final live television debate,

First Minister Carwyn Jones said Labour ministers were spending

a bigger share of their budget on the NHS than ever.

But rival parties attacked Labour's 17-year health record

presenting their alternative visions for the service.

Our political editor, Nick Servini, was watching.

With a week to go until polling day, the leaders of the six main parties

lined up against each other at Saint Davids Hall in Cardiff. The NHS was

the first issue raised. But of the debate focused on the question of

whether there should be a cancer drugs firms, sparked by this

emotional question. We are lagging behind England and there are drug

treatments that you can have across the border that you cannot have in

this country. There are people right now in bed who are ill and would be

better off in England. When I voted for devolution, I did not expect to

have second-rate health care... Labour leader Carwyn Jones responded

with the reference to Labour's plan to bring in a specialist on to cover

all conditions, which prompted this from the leader of the Welsh

Conservatives, who went on the attack. Patients have gone from

Wales to England to get those treatments, as the lady identified.

One in three of us will have a episode of cancer, going down to one

into. We have championed a cancer drugs and here in Wales and we want

to expand that into a cancer treatment plan that will cover from

diagnostic into drug availability but you cannot brush it under the

carpet, Carwyn Jones. You haven't made the improvements.

We want the health minister to be responsible... We want the health

minister to be responsible for health and we want the government to

take responsibility and stop being in denial for the top it is

democratic responsibility, that you have abdicated.

Where would it be based? What do you mean where would it be based? Is the

NHS, it is all over Wales. On the economy the issue moved on to

the steel crisis, in which the Green party outlined how alternative

models should be looked at. You guys in your community could own that

plant and you could be in charge of what your own job is. And the

sustainability of that job relies on the fact we could create a renewable

economy in Wales and use that deal. There is a huge opportunity in Wales

to build up our renewable infrastructure and use that steel in

Wales and create many more jobs. Then plans for an M4 relief road in

Newport came up and whether a ?1 billion motorway should be built.

Kirsty Williams for the Liberal Democrats said the investment should

be spread out further across Wales. If we are to have infrastructure

that is for the whole of Wales, you don't blow the entire budget on one

road in one section of Wales and we have to look at a fair distribution

of resources. We have to look at the transport solutions both here in the

South Southeast and also looking at the feasibility of opening up the

Aberystwyth to Carmarthen landfills top Nathan Gill for Ukip defended

his party policy to reintroduce grammar schools.

Pushing us all into the one size fits all system, if it worked, why

are we behind Estonia in the user tables? It doesn't work. You have

been doing it for 17 years and it doesn't work and in England, where

they still have grammar schools, they are the ones that the parents

Nick what did we learn from the debate?

Well, the opposition party certainly wanted the big debates tonight on

the state of the NHS in Wales and I think they got that. The tone was

set by Carwyn Jones early on in his opening statement. He didn't mention

the steelworks, talked about the NHS and mentioned the junior doctors

like in England as evidence of a system that works in Wales. Andrew

RT Davies was pretty aggressive early on, trying to land blows on

that highly charged subject of the Cancer Drugs Fund. It is very

different from the leaders debate last week, were in effect the

opposition parties were ganging up against Carwyn Jones. This had a

more broken up feel about it with different browser eking out in

different places. It was striking that Carwyn Jones was focused more

on his criticism not on the Conservatives but an Plaid Cymru.

Not just on the NHS but on university tuition fees funding.

Leanne Wood got fed up at one stage, accusing Carwyn Jones of

misrepresenting her party. Ukip very much talked about the issue of the

EU, which they haven't done in the past. Inevitably, all parties are

claiming victory but it will be up to us to decide.

The rest of the day's news now - and the UK government is NOT

offering financial support to Tata, to encourage it to keep

hold of its operations, including Port Talbot.

The Business Department has confirmed to BBC Wales

that its co-investment offer of taking a 25% stake

in the company is only available to buyers.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, says there's "no

guarantee" that government efforts to save the British steel industry

will be successful but it's doing everything it can.

While we want to do everything we can to secure the future not only

for Port Talbot but also for Scunthorpe and deal-making in

Britain, we are coping with a massive oversupply and collapse in

prices from China, so we must do everything we can and there is no

guarantee of success but we want to get on with it and we can success.

A Wrexham-based football club has said it's severed

all ties with a player, over remarks he made on Twitter
