Good evening.

0:00:140:00:16

Climate activists camped alongside the UK's largest opencast coal mine

0:00:160:00:18

in Merthyr Tydfil have held a day of preparations

0:00:180:00:20

ahead of what they're calling "mass action" tomorrow.

0:00:200:00:24

The Reclaim the Power group say they'll attempt to halt operations

0:00:240:00:26

at the Ffos y Fran mine.

0:00:260:00:29

Our environment correspondent, Steffan Messenger, reports.

0:00:290:00:33

At the End Coal Now camp, workshops are well under way

0:00:330:00:36

for those taking part in tomorrow's demonstrations.

0:00:360:00:40

They have occupied a blustery patch of open moorland

0:00:400:00:43

in between the existing Ffos y Fran mine and the site of another

0:00:430:00:46

proposed opencast operation in the Rhymney Valley.

0:00:460:00:51

We have just signed the Paris Agreement which commits us

0:00:510:00:53

to keeping warming to 1.5 degrees, which is totally incompatible

0:00:530:00:56

with a new mine.

0:00:560:01:00

So we're here to make a stand against that and support the local

0:01:000:01:02

community and their campaign.

0:01:020:01:06

Opencast mining has seen something of a resurgence

0:01:060:01:08

in South Wales in recent years.

0:01:080:01:09

There are five sites currently in operation, supplying

0:01:090:01:12

Aberthaw Power Station in the Vale of Glamorgan and the steelworks

0:01:120:01:16

at Port Talbot.

0:01:160:01:17

If we're not going to mine it locally in South Wales in the future

0:01:170:01:21

it'll have to come from elsewhere, and one of the biggest producers

0:01:210:01:24

of that sort of coal is New Zealand.

0:01:240:01:26

If you say, "Let's shut down everything in sight in South Wales

0:01:260:01:29

and just import it,"

0:01:290:01:31

well, just be clear what you're saying.

0:01:310:01:33

You are asking for a larger carbon footprint.

0:01:330:01:35

But this is about more than a local dispute.

0:01:350:01:38

By tomorrow they reckon there'll be around 400 activists

0:01:380:01:40

from all across the UK and as far afield as France

0:01:400:01:43

and the Netherlands.

0:01:430:01:49

They're calling for a moratorium or suspension

0:01:490:01:52

of opencast mining across the UK,

0:01:520:01:54

timing their protest so that it falls days before local

0:01:540:01:56

and national elections.

0:01:560:02:00

In Wales, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats

0:02:000:02:01

and the Green Party says they will oppose any

0:02:010:02:03

new opencast sites.

0:02:030:02:05

Labour, the Conservatives and Ukip say it should be down to

0:02:050:02:07

local councils to decide.

0:02:070:02:08

These protesters will tomorrow attempt to halt operations

0:02:080:02:12

at Ffos y Fran to try and urge politicians to call time on coal.

0:02:120:02:15

Those in charge of the mine say their top concern will be the safety

0:02:150:02:19

of all involved.

0:02:190:02:22

A letter of intent to buy Tata's UK steel assets

0:02:220:02:25

will be submitted by Sanjeev Gupta's Liberty House tomorrow.

0:02:250:02:30

Thousands of workers in Wales are at risk of losing their jobs

0:02:300:02:33

if a suitable buyer can't be found to purchase the steelworks

0:02:330:02:35

businesses here.

0:02:350:02:40

Police have named a man who died in a car crash near Mold yesterday,

0:02:400:02:43

as Jonathan Yeardley.

0:02:430:02:47

He came from the Nannerch area, not far from where

0:02:470:02:49

the collision happened.

0:02:490:02:50

Two other people were injured.

0:02:500:02:54

The search for the fisherman from Pembrokeshire who's

0:02:540:02:56

been missing since last Thursday has ended.

0:02:560:03:00

Dan Willington, from Carew, hasn't been seen since his boat hit

0:03:000:03:04

rocks off St David's Head.

0:03:040:03:08

His father was rescued, but later died.

0:03:080:03:13

With three days to go until the Assembly election,

0:03:130:03:16

the parties are making their final push for votes.

0:03:160:03:18

Labour is appealing for left-leaning supporters of other parties

0:03:180:03:20

to lend them their votes.

0:03:200:03:21

The Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats have

0:03:210:03:23

been attacking Labour's record in Government.

0:03:230:03:24

Here's our political reporter, James Williams.

0:03:240:03:31

Carwyn Jones.

0:03:310:03:32

He is the man Labour has put front and centre of its election campaign

0:03:320:03:35

and with the opinion polls suggesting the party could concede

0:03:350:03:38

political ground on Thursday, Carwyn Jones today made this appeal.

0:03:380:03:44

Over the next few days we will focus on two things -

0:03:440:03:47

getting out the vote and making sure those who promised to vote Labour

0:03:470:03:50

vote Labour by Thursday, and secondly of course saying

0:03:500:03:52

to people who live in constituencies where it is

0:03:520:03:55

a straight fight between Labour and the Tories, lend us your vote.

0:03:550:03:58

Make sure you don't wake up with a Conservative AM

0:03:580:04:00

representing you on Friday.

0:04:000:04:03

Recognition, Labour says, that the majority of tight contests

0:04:030:04:05

will be between themselves and the Conservatives.

0:04:050:04:10

Their focus - what they say is Labour's

0:04:100:04:12

mismanagement of the Welsh NHS.

0:04:120:04:16

It can't be right that on polling day that

0:04:160:04:18

people will reward Labour for underinvestment in our health

0:04:180:04:20

service, ?1 billion worth of cuts, a doubling of NHS waiting times,

0:04:200:04:23

and no cancer drugs fund.

0:04:230:04:25

What the Conservatives are promising is

0:04:250:04:26

year-on-year investment, cutting waiting times

0:04:260:04:29

and the creation of a cancer treatment plan for Wales.

0:04:290:04:32

Plaid Cymru believes its campaign has moved up a gear in recent weeks,

0:04:320:04:36

pouncing on opinion polls that suggest the party is in second

0:04:360:04:38

place behind Labour.

0:04:380:04:43

We've had 17 years of Labour government and Wales

0:04:430:04:45

is desperate for change.

0:04:450:04:47

Labour is no longer a progressive party in Wales.

0:04:470:04:50

Plaid Cymru is.

0:04:500:04:52

I think there is a real buzz on the streets, and people

0:04:520:04:55

want change.

0:04:550:04:56

We can see that.

0:04:560:04:57

So am I enthused?

0:04:570:04:58

Yes, I am.

0:04:580:05:00

Elections have not exactly been kind to the Liberal Democrats

0:05:000:05:03

in recent years.

0:05:030:05:04

In the shadow of one of the greatest leaders, they

0:05:040:05:08

know they're fighting for their very existence in Cardiff Bay.

0:05:080:05:11

If the Welsh Liberal Democrats are not

0:05:110:05:14

in the Assembly there will be nobody there to talk about the issues that

0:05:140:05:17

are often sidelined or forgotten by the other parties.

0:05:170:05:19

For instance, we are the only party in this election that

0:05:190:05:22

has consistently highlighted

0:05:220:05:23

the need to improve mental health services in Wales.

0:05:230:05:27

Ukip poses the biggest threat to the Lib Dems,

0:05:270:05:29

with opinion polls suggesting they could enter the Senedd

0:05:290:05:31

for the very first time.

0:05:310:05:35

But with only a few days to go until the voting

0:05:350:05:38

booths open, all five parties have it all to play for.

0:05:380:05:43

Cricket, and Glamorgan are 212 runs behind

0:05:430:05:46

with nine wickets remaining on the second day of their

0:05:460:05:50

County Championship match against Kent at Canterbury.

0:05:500:05:53

At close of play, the visitors were 16 for one

0:05:530:05:56

in their second innings, after Kent reached a first

0:05:560:05:58

innings total of 488.

0:05:580:06:02

The weather forecast now - here's Behnaz.

0:06:020:06:06

The weather is set to become much warmer over the coming days.

0:06:060:06:09

We can look forward to some sunshine tomorrow, with just the odd

0:06:090:06:12

isolated shower likely.

0:06:120:06:13

Through tonight we do have a few isolated showers,

0:06:130:06:16

mainly along the coast, but the bulk of the country dry

0:06:160:06:18

with some clear skies.

0:06:180:06:20

Some mist and fog forming, perhaps pockets of frost

0:06:200:06:22

as well overnight.

0:06:220:06:23

Temperatures getting down to about four Celsius.

0:06:230:06:25

Tomorrow high pressure is in charge of our weather,

0:06:250:06:27

bringing a fairly settled day.

0:06:270:06:28

First thing tomorrow morning, yes, it's a chilly start to our morning,

0:06:280:06:31

but at least we do have some sunshine to look forward to.

0:06:310:06:34

Just the odd isolated shower, but I think most of us will get

0:06:340:06:37

away with a dry day.

0:06:370:06:40

Feeling warm in the sunshine, with those temperatures getting up

0:06:400:06:42

to about 13 Celsius.

0:06:420:06:43

Over the coming days, those temperatures will recover

0:06:430:06:45

and we can look forward to more in the way of sunshine.

0:06:450:06:50

We're back in Breakfast with the latest news and sport,

0:06:500:06:53

0:06:550:06:56
