stabbed in the stomach when he tried to go to Jo Cox's aid, | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Wales Today - our top stories... | :00:00. | :00:07.
Labour's big guns take to the streets - as campaigning | :00:08. | :00:10.
resumes for the EU referendum campaign - | :00:11. | :00:12.
No one's presented any facts, have they? | :00:13. | :00:29.
How do. We've had a go at a land they haven't made a very good job of | :00:30. | :00:33.
it. With just days to go now before | :00:34. | :00:36.
Thursday's Referendum - both the Leave and Remain | :00:37. | :00:38.
campaigners go head to head - Tonight's other headlines - | :00:39. | :00:41.
Welsh MPs share their memories Also tonight - the dangers | :00:42. | :00:53.
of swimming in reservoirs - Can Wales make history | :00:54. | :01:10.
and progress to the knock-out 90 minutes from kick-off | :01:11. | :01:19.
against Russia - a win We failed in 2003. What an | :01:20. | :01:36.
opportunity these players have got to get to the last 16. I don't think | :01:37. | :01:41.
they will underestimate it. It is going to take a big performance. | :01:42. | :01:45.
Rival camps in the EU referendum debate claim - | :01:46. | :01:49.
they each have momentum on their side - as campaigning | :01:50. | :01:51.
in Wales resumed after the death of the Labour MP Jo Cox. | :01:52. | :01:54.
Welsh Labour's biggest players were out in Pontypridd trying | :01:55. | :01:56.
Vote Leave campaigners claim - there's a shift in mood | :01:57. | :02:00.
in its direction as polling day approaches. | :02:01. | :02:05.
In a moment, we'll be hearing from two | :02:06. | :02:07.
of the leading figures from both sides of the campaign - | :02:08. | :02:10.
first our political editor Nick Servini. | :02:11. | :02:17.
The big beasts of Welsh Labour hit the streets of Pontypridd to try to | :02:18. | :02:25.
persuade voters to remain in the EU. Wearing white roses in memory of the | :02:26. | :02:42.
murdered MP Jo Cox. Lord Murphy and Lord Hain, a pair of former Welsh | :02:43. | :02:50.
secretaries. The big focus is now in the valleys because not enough | :02:51. | :02:55.
people are like him. Too many are ignoring the wishes of the party's | :02:56. | :03:03.
leadership and considering a Leave vote because of concerns about | :03:04. | :03:08.
immigration. It has been difficult, especially in the valleys where | :03:09. | :03:15.
there has been support for Leave. My opinion is that there is a definite | :03:16. | :03:20.
change of move and now a trend towards Remain. This is a safe | :03:21. | :03:27.
Labour seat but it is a striking feature of the campaign that areas | :03:28. | :03:32.
that are not used to tight political contests like the South Wales | :03:33. | :03:37.
valleys, find themselves in the middle of the political action. It | :03:38. | :03:41.
is the message getting through? I don't know. I swing from one to | :03:42. | :03:46.
another. I just don't know. I will decide on the day. Jobs, | :03:47. | :03:54.
opportunities, the ability to move freely around Europe. No one has | :03:55. | :03:58.
presented any facts that persuade me we should vote out. Out. They have | :03:59. | :04:05.
had a go at in and they haven't done a very good job. Leave campaigners | :04:06. | :04:16.
have said that Wales may have extra money in the event of a Leave. | :04:17. | :04:27.
Members of the Leave campaign have categorically confirmed that when we | :04:28. | :04:30.
leave the EU that farmers will continue to get the money they | :04:31. | :04:35.
receive, that all the money that the EU has promised to 2020 will be | :04:36. | :04:41.
continued to be received. There will be plenty of conversations on both | :04:42. | :04:44.
sides as the final flurry of campaigning gets underway. | :04:45. | :04:46.
Well, Nick's here with the First Minister Carwyn Jones | :04:47. | :04:48.
And the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies | :04:49. | :04:53.
who wants Britain to Leave the European Union. | :04:54. | :04:54.
Thanks. First Minister, as long as we are in the EU, we cannot control | :04:55. | :05:09.
immigration from the EU. What it is wrong with wanting to control | :05:10. | :05:13.
immigration? You talk as if there is no passport control. There is. | :05:14. | :05:19.
50,000 people who work in the NHS are from the EU. People feel | :05:20. | :05:25.
concerned about job security but blaming immigrants is not the way to | :05:26. | :05:29.
deal with it. People need proper job security through laws. Do you accept | :05:30. | :05:35.
that we can't control it? Jeremy Corbyn said that. We have 3 million | :05:36. | :05:43.
people in Wales. We have 47,000 EU citizens. A tiny proportion. There | :05:44. | :05:48.
are 2 million UK citizens who live in countries outside the UK. Andrew, | :05:49. | :05:54.
are you happy with the tone of the Leave campaign. Baroness Warsi left | :05:55. | :06:02.
today saying it was xenophobic. The tone outlines what people are | :06:03. | :06:09.
saying. He clearly didn't say we have control over immigration. I | :06:10. | :06:16.
support somebody who supports migration because I see it as a | :06:17. | :06:21.
positive economic driver. However, all these decisions are taken in | :06:22. | :06:25.
Brussels by unelected commissioners. If we want to be responsible for the | :06:26. | :06:30.
borders of this country, we have to leave the European Union and hold | :06:31. | :06:33.
politicians to account at the ballot box. There is immigration out of | :06:34. | :06:39.
control in Wales? I'm positive about immigration. So it is a positive. In | :06:40. | :06:49.
some places it is a problem and in others it is perceived problem. But | :06:50. | :06:54.
there is a problem over the government's inability be to control | :06:55. | :06:59.
borders and red tape. To take back that control we need to vote Leave. | :07:00. | :07:05.
I spend a lot of my time trying to bring investment into Wales. We have | :07:06. | :07:10.
unemployment figures lower than Scotland and Northern Ireland. Every | :07:11. | :07:14.
investor that comes to Wales sees it as a base for the European market. | :07:15. | :07:19.
If we can't guarantee access to that market, they won't come. They will | :07:20. | :07:24.
go to Ireland, France, Germany. It is what Ford have said. It is what | :07:25. | :07:30.
Nissan have said. It jeopardises jobs for working people. Are we | :07:31. | :07:34.
going to listen to those who employ thousands across the UK or dismiss | :07:35. | :07:38.
their concerns? I want to make sure that we are confident country within | :07:39. | :07:43.
the EU working with other countries like ours rather than shouting on | :07:44. | :07:48.
the sidelines. Much better to be on the pitch playing rather than on the | :07:49. | :07:54.
sidelines. Being governed by European guidelines rather than | :07:55. | :07:56.
controlling them which is where Norway is now. We've seen the | :07:57. | :08:02.
strengthening of the pound off the back of polling at the weekend which | :08:03. | :08:09.
is more towards Remain. If there is economic downturn, it won't be the | :08:10. | :08:13.
wealthy parts of the UK, it will be Wales, who will suffer. Can we | :08:14. | :08:19.
afford to stay within the European Union? The Eurozone is one of the | :08:20. | :08:24.
weakest areas of growth in the world. There is only Antarctica with | :08:25. | :08:39.
a lower growth rate. James Dyson has come out for Leave. Many are saying | :08:40. | :08:46.
that there is nothing to be feared from Brexit. Do people want to hold | :08:47. | :08:51.
politicians to account, to safeguard our borders, make sure we don't move | :08:52. | :08:55.
into a federal state of Europe with in income tax powers and an army. | :08:56. | :09:09.
That is a fallacy. A lot of people see migrant workers cutting wages | :09:10. | :09:16.
and keeping a lid on wage increases. Where is it happening? We know that | :09:17. | :09:20.
there migrant workers in Wales working in jobs where it is | :09:21. | :09:25.
difficult to recruit local people. Abattoirs will tell you that. Miss, | :09:26. | :09:30.
Richard Branson, the English Premier League, they are all saying that | :09:31. | :09:35.
Brexit is bad for Britain. We have those employees in Wales. Brexit is | :09:36. | :09:41.
saying that their views are of no importance. I deal with those people | :09:42. | :09:47.
regularly. Tata, all this uncertainty doesn't help. We don't | :09:48. | :09:53.
want them to say when the tough got going, Britain run away. The notion | :09:54. | :10:01.
of EU aid in Wales. If we were to see a Brexit, Andrew, your own prime | :10:02. | :10:08.
ministers said in that chair and he said he could not guarantee any | :10:09. | :10:14.
shortfall in EU funding for deprived communities in Wales because part of | :10:15. | :10:24.
Brexit. We spend between 18 and 19 billion to be part of the EU and we | :10:25. | :10:29.
get back about 9 billion. There will be a surplus to. We have to have an | :10:30. | :10:33.
eye on where the money is disbursed. We are part of the United Kingdom. | :10:34. | :10:37.
It is imperative that government spreads it around. No guarantees. No | :10:38. | :10:47.
politician will give a guarantee. The people vote at the ballot box. | :10:48. | :10:51.
There is no guarantee of European money continuing. It will only be | :10:52. | :10:57.
until 2020. The common agricultural policy is now under 40% of the EU | :10:58. | :11:08.
budget. From a Welsh perspective, we lose 245 million straightaway. It is | :11:09. | :11:12.
money we cannot make up. It comes from Europe. Andrew is like Boris | :11:13. | :11:24.
Johnson and others, he cannot guarantee it. He cannot guarantee | :11:25. | :11:33.
that money how can you guarantee it? Yes, it is there. It is coming from | :11:34. | :11:38.
Brussels. The money is there. I can see it. Farmers can see it now. You | :11:39. | :11:46.
are saying that money will disappear into a money box in Whitehall. It | :11:47. | :11:51.
will be secured because everybody has to have full security. ?260 | :11:52. | :11:58.
million of money coming into Wales to our farmers, there is no | :11:59. | :12:01.
guarantee that will come to Wales from Whitehall. Now, our farmers are | :12:02. | :12:09.
guaranteed that money. It will continue. The First Minister is the | :12:10. | :12:15.
leader of a government with the highest modulation of funding. If we | :12:16. | :12:23.
take control on Thursday, we will get that back. You did say there | :12:24. | :12:28.
will be a collapse in farming in the event of Brexit. Our farmers in | :12:29. | :12:38.
Wales get ?260 million per year. I've dealt with Whitehall | :12:39. | :12:41.
departments. They're not interested in farmers in Wales. You cut a hill | :12:42. | :12:49.
farming support. Our farmers rely on exporting to the European market. It | :12:50. | :12:53.
will increase the price of Welsh lamb in Europe. They want a free | :12:54. | :12:58.
trade agreement with New Zealand. That means more cheap New Zealand | :12:59. | :13:04.
lamb. The introduction of tariffs is obviously going to be difficult. We | :13:05. | :13:10.
have to leave it there. Andrew R T Davies and Carwyn Jones, thank you. | :13:11. | :13:11.
Nick, thank you. You can get more information | :13:12. | :13:14.
on the EU Referendum campaign in Wales on the BBC News website | :13:15. | :13:17.
- bbc.co.uk/Walesnews - and follow the link | :13:18. | :13:22.
to the EU Referendum page. it's a big night for Wales | :13:23. | :13:27.
at the football championships. They take on Russia in a crunch game | :13:28. | :13:34.
in just over an hour's time. Not long to go now. Thousands of | :13:35. | :13:49.
fans have started to arrive here at the stadium in Toulouse. It promises | :13:50. | :13:56.
to be a night of high drama. Anything could happen. Wales could | :13:57. | :14:01.
progress to the last 16 but could also be heading home. Wales's group | :14:02. | :14:07.
is wide open. Wales could finish first, second, third or, maybe, | :14:08. | :14:15.
fourth. The fans have been considering the permutation for | :14:16. | :14:20.
days. It's complicated. A win for Wales, they are through. A draw is | :14:21. | :14:26.
likely to be enough. Here is the latest. A warm up for the fans. | :14:27. | :14:35.
Russia versus Wales, a friendly before the main event this evening. | :14:36. | :14:40.
A game of such significance, tonight's result for this Welshman | :14:41. | :14:46.
and his Russian wife might have implications for their relation | :14:47. | :14:53.
ship. It may deteriorate depending on the result. The fairest result | :14:54. | :14:57.
will be a draw. I think it will be 1-1. Then we can go home happy and | :14:58. | :15:03.
we will be speaking together and everything will be happy. This game | :15:04. | :15:10.
ended 3-3. That would suit this family. Other supporters want a | :15:11. | :15:15.
victory. We need to believe in ourselves. We were ponderous on the | :15:16. | :15:20.
ball against England. If we can push up we can beat them. Wales fans will | :15:21. | :15:26.
be discussing the permutations, what result means what in Group B? Beat | :15:27. | :15:30.
Russia and Wales will finish first or second and through to the | :15:31. | :15:36.
knockout stages. A draw will see them finish second or third. | :15:37. | :15:41.
Finished third and a place in the last 16 depends on other results. | :15:42. | :15:45.
Even if Wales lose to Russia, they can still make third if England beat | :15:46. | :15:52.
Slovakia. We could have done better with the ball against England and we | :15:53. | :15:56.
have been looking to put that right on the training pitch. The boys are | :15:57. | :16:01.
relaxed. We know what we need to do. We are looking forward to the game. | :16:02. | :16:07.
We don't have to say too much. The preparation is done. The party is | :16:08. | :16:13.
well underway. The fans wearing red in the pink city are here to enjoy | :16:14. | :16:19.
it. The security may have been upgraded from medium to high after | :16:20. | :16:25.
violence in Marseille but the atmosphere over night and through | :16:26. | :16:31.
the afternoon has been relaxed. Have few Russian guys were with us having | :16:32. | :16:35.
edging and a singalong, sharing pictures. We just been having | :16:36. | :16:40.
photographs with them. It's been brilliant. Very friendly. Fantastic. | :16:41. | :16:49.
It's been underwhelming for Russia, drawing with England and losing to | :16:50. | :16:54.
Slovakia. The centre-back pairing has a combine age of 70 and they are | :16:55. | :16:59.
missing key players. Having said that, Wales have never won against | :17:00. | :17:03.
tonight's opponents. The disappointment of missing out in a | :17:04. | :17:12.
place in the Euro 2004 finals in Wales was devastating. We were | :17:13. | :17:18.
devastated the night. We did really well in Moscow but we didn't play in | :17:19. | :17:24.
the home game. We failed in 2003. What an opportunity these players | :17:25. | :17:29.
have to get back into the last 16. I don't think they will | :17:30. | :17:32.
underestimated. If we can defend like we know we can. Their | :17:33. | :17:39.
centre-backs are 34 and 36. We need to stretch them and give a fantastic | :17:40. | :17:42.
performance which is what it will take tonight. A win to bury the | :17:43. | :17:48.
heartache of previous campaigns. Tonight is not a time to lose. It | :17:49. | :17:56.
was thought that Wales would have to play in their away top but after an | :17:57. | :18:00.
agreement with Uefa and Russia they will play in their home strip | :18:01. | :18:02.
instead. Read for Wales tonight. Much more to come | :18:03. | :18:06.
before seven o'clock The campaign warning of the dangers | :18:07. | :18:19.
of swimming in reservoirs and why men are being targeted. Today is the | :18:20. | :18:27.
start of the summer solstice. It didn't feel like it today but there | :18:28. | :18:31.
is better weather on the way. More in a free minutes. | :18:32. | :18:33.
That's how one Welsh MP described "the sense of loss and grief" felt | :18:34. | :18:40.
after the murder of his colleague, Jo Cox. | :18:41. | :18:42.
Mrs Cox died after being shot and stabbed in her Yorkshire | :18:43. | :18:44.
constituency and today Welsh MPs and peers were among those | :18:45. | :18:47.
who returned to Westminster to pay their tributes. | :18:48. | :18:49.
Our parliamentary correspondent, David Cornock, was there. | :18:50. | :18:51.
Today, MPs gathered in Parliament Square to remember | :18:52. | :18:59.
tears and flowers - but laughter too - | :19:00. | :19:12.
Jo Cox was Stephen Doughty's boss when they worked for Oxfam. | :19:13. | :19:19.
She once told me in a one-to-one meeting as my manager that she | :19:20. | :19:38.
didn't do touchy feely. That irony was too emotional and needed to get | :19:39. | :19:39.
on with it. The widely-worn | :19:40. | :19:42.
white roses - of Yorkshire - Nobody said no. I immediately said | :19:43. | :19:43.
yes. Jo Cox's first job after university | :19:44. | :19:52.
was working for Glenys Kinnock, Lady Kinnock said her death had left | :19:53. | :19:54.
so many feeling emptiness. We must overcome that. Jo Cox would | :19:55. | :20:07.
have said, don't moan, work, organise and campaign for a better | :20:08. | :20:10.
world. I hope that we would and we will. | :20:11. | :20:13.
Stephen Kinnock's best friend in Parliament. | :20:14. | :20:17.
He told MPs she'd have been outraged by a pro-Brexit poster featuring | :20:18. | :20:23.
refugees and the slogan Breaking Point. | :20:24. | :20:25.
He said there were lessons for politics from the way she died. | :20:26. | :20:29.
This is our time to honour the legacy of the proud Yorkshire lass | :20:30. | :20:39.
who dedicated her life to the common good and who was so cruelly taken | :20:40. | :20:43.
away from us in the prime of her life. Jo Cox, we love you. We salute | :20:44. | :20:48.
you. And we shall never forget you. A memorial service was held | :20:49. | :20:54.
in a Westminster church. The shared grief etched on the faces | :20:55. | :20:57.
of politicians struggling David - an emotional | :20:58. | :20:59.
day in parliament - after months of politicians | :21:00. | :21:03.
being very divided - Very emotional House of Commons | :21:04. | :21:16.
today. The way in which Jo Cox died has sparked a debate about the tone | :21:17. | :21:25.
of politics. MPs discussing how to disagree without being disagreeable. | :21:26. | :21:32.
It has also sparked a debate about MP's security. Stephen Kinnock for | :21:33. | :21:37.
one doesn't want high-security to stop him talking to his | :21:38. | :21:41.
constituents. He said that would let the bad guys win. Thank you. | :21:42. | :21:44.
Two brothers, who were both teachers in Gwynedd, | :21:45. | :21:47.
have pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children. | :21:48. | :21:51.
Dr Robyn Wheldon-Williams pleaded guilty to eight charges | :21:52. | :21:53.
involving over 1,300 indecent images and videos. | :21:54. | :21:55.
His brother Dyfan pleaded guilty to three charges | :21:56. | :21:57.
Nightly closures of the Brynglas tunnels on the M4 motorway | :21:58. | :22:08.
Maintenance work will take place up to five days a week, | :22:09. | :22:12.
Traffic will be affected between 8pm and 6am, | :22:13. | :22:16.
Our reservoirs - without question beautiful, | :22:17. | :22:21.
Ten years ago these freezing waters near Merthyr Tydfil claimed the life | :22:22. | :22:28.
of a 15-year-old boy as he tried to swim. | :22:29. | :22:31.
Now as Welsh Water launches a campaign to warn of the dangers | :22:32. | :22:35.
his mother has been speaking about the impact of his death. | :22:36. | :22:37.
at this reservoir above Merthyr Tydfil. | :22:38. | :22:49.
These new recruits to the RAF are well prepared and properly equipped. | :22:50. | :22:52.
They can go in the water with the boats and buoyancy aids but they | :22:53. | :22:55.
wouldn't be allowed just go in by themselves. | :22:56. | :22:58.
But, every year, people, mainly men between 17 and 35, fail | :22:59. | :23:01.
It was here that ten years ago | :23:02. | :23:13.
She told me how Reuben had been camping with friends. | :23:14. | :23:23.
It has had a massive impact on the family. | :23:24. | :23:30.
Reuben has a brother who is 20 months younger than him. | :23:31. | :23:32.
Clearly, even now, it's very difficult. | :23:33. | :23:36.
You know, it's affected everybody's life. | :23:37. | :23:45.
Last summer, there were 149 incidents where people are tempted | :23:46. | :23:48.
Secondly, beneath the surface, there tends to be hidden plant and | :23:49. | :23:58.
equipment that can track you but, worst of all, is the temperature of | :23:59. | :24:01.
No matter how strong a swimmer, or how fit you might be, | :24:02. | :24:05.
the cold will have a terrible effect on people trying to swim in the | :24:06. | :24:09.
Most drownings are related to people who actually get | :24:10. | :24:12.
overcome by the very cold temperatures and they just don't | :24:13. | :24:15.
an online campaign warning of the dangers. | :24:16. | :24:26.
The company says it hopes it will be hard-hitting enough to | :24:27. | :24:29.
deter young men who often view themselves as invincible. | :24:30. | :24:35.
The Footballer Ched Evans - who faces a retrial | :24:36. | :24:37.
over rape allegations - has joined the League One side | :24:38. | :24:40.
The former Wales striker was jailed four years ago for raping a woman | :24:41. | :24:46.
in a hotel near Rhyl - his conviction was quashed | :24:47. | :24:49.
Let me take you back to Toulouse - there's just over an hour to go | :24:50. | :25:04.
until Wales kick off their crunch match against Russia. | :25:05. | :25:07.
Within the last few minutes, the players made their way into the | :25:08. | :25:16.
stadium. I can show you some pictures of the coach making its way | :25:17. | :25:22.
through the streets. Dozens and dozens of Wales fans were chanting | :25:23. | :25:26.
as the bus made its way through the street. An impressive motorcade | :25:27. | :25:33.
escorted by police. Security is tight. An additional 600 police | :25:34. | :25:39.
officers have been drafted in on top of the 1300 security staff already | :25:40. | :25:47.
working. Wales made history in getting here and now they are | :25:48. | :25:52.
looking to write a new chapter in Welsh sporting history. The south of | :25:53. | :25:59.
France, the sun is shining. Will it last? Sue Charles has the forecast. | :26:00. | :26:08.
And it's looking good for Wales' last group game - | :26:09. | :26:10.
it should remain fine and dry in Toulouse tonight - | :26:11. | :26:13.
and relatively warm - temperatures staying | :26:14. | :26:14.
Today's the summer solstice - although back here in Wales it | :26:15. | :26:18.
didn't feel like it earlier - but after the heavy rain - | :26:19. | :26:21.
it should turn drier and clearer tonight. | :26:22. | :26:22.
That's because the front which brought today's | :26:23. | :26:26.
rain clears south eastwards - allowing a more settled spell | :26:27. | :26:28.
Tonight will stay dry - some clear intervals developing - | :26:29. | :26:32.
light winds - but still some cloud around - | :26:33. | :26:34.
holding up the temperatures in double figures. | :26:35. | :26:36.
Tomorrow - should stay largely dry - just the odd isolated shower | :26:37. | :26:39.
possible - but some decent sunny spells too - some cloud around - | :26:40. | :26:42.
especially through the afternoon - and with light SW winds - | :26:43. | :26:44.
feeling warm tomorrow - Highs of 17C in Pembs - 19 in Conwy. | :26:45. | :26:51.
Tomorrow night starts fine and dry but cloud thickening - | :26:52. | :26:57.
and warm southerly winds pushing up the odd shower, really feeling | :26:58. | :26:59.
Midweek we're caught between these two weather fronts - | :27:00. | :27:06.
high pressure trying to build - but low pressure and fronts either | :27:07. | :27:09.
side could bring some showers - as we drag in more humid | :27:10. | :27:11.
So a mostly dry day on Wednesday - a chance of a few showers developing | :27:12. | :27:17.
- but sunny spells too and feeling quite humid as SW winds | :27:18. | :27:21.
draw up that warmer air - temperatures back in the 20s | :27:22. | :27:24.
Thursday's looking mainly dry with sunny spells. | :27:25. | :27:31.
Maybe the odd shower - similar Friday - | :27:32. | :27:33.
with temperatures holding up in the high teens/low 20s. | :27:34. | :27:41.
I'll be back with a quick update at eight o'clock | :27:42. | :27:44.
and again with all the reaction to the game after | :27:45. | :27:46.
That's Wales Today thank you for watching from all of us | :27:47. | :27:51. |
