Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tonight's headlines: An overnight vigil is held at Llandaff Cathedral | :00:00. | :00:07.
to remember the Welsh soldiers who fought and died | :00:08. | :00:09.
It's business as usual for this company in Baglan, | :00:10. | :00:16.
but Plaid Cymru accuses the Welsh Government of not having | :00:17. | :00:19.
The First Minister has been at Llandaff Cathedral tonight | :00:20. | :00:40.
leading a national vigil to commemorate the Welshmen | :00:41. | :00:42.
who fought and lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme | :00:43. | :00:45.
The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, has said he thinks | :00:46. | :00:50.
it's ironic that we commemorate those who lost their lives | :00:51. | :00:52.
for the freedom of Europe a week after the EU referendum result. | :00:53. | :00:56.
As commemorations are held around the country and in France to mark | :00:57. | :01:12.
the centenary of the Battle of the Somme hundreds gathered in Llandaff | :01:13. | :01:15.
Cathedral tonight to begin an all-night vigil to remember those | :01:16. | :01:19.
who died. We owe our freedom to them so it would be terrible if we were | :01:20. | :01:23.
to forget all this so on is important to hold a service like | :01:24. | :01:26.
this on the anniversary as it were of the beginning of that at all. It | :01:27. | :01:31.
is a bit ironic of course that here we are commemorating people who gave | :01:32. | :01:36.
their lives for the freedom of this country and Europe and yet look what | :01:37. | :01:43.
happened last week. The centrepiece of tonight's ceremony is this | :01:44. | :01:47.
minor's lamp. On the hour throughout the night prayers will be said here | :01:48. | :01:49.
before the landowners carried through the city to the National War | :01:50. | :01:54.
Memorial were at 7am in the morning a service will be held ending with a | :01:55. | :01:58.
whistle to signify the moment the soldiers in the trenches went over | :01:59. | :02:02.
the top. It was the largest battle of World War I, the Battle of the | :02:03. | :02:07.
Somme began on the 1st of July 19 16. On the first day alone more than | :02:08. | :02:14.
19,000 British soldiers died. After 141 days of fighting more than a | :02:15. | :02:17.
million men are from both sides were dead. We thought it was a holiday | :02:18. | :02:27.
may be. We thought we would beat the Germans in six months. That is what | :02:28. | :02:34.
we thought. There were no meals, no nothing regular. We were never | :02:35. | :02:43.
instructed on what to do or how to do it. Today, a dragon stands in | :02:44. | :02:47.
memory of the sacrifice of the 20,000 Welshmen who fought at Mametz | :02:48. | :02:53.
Wood. Tonight Wales will keep watch once more, remembering them and all | :02:54. | :02:54.
who fought and died on the Somme. Plaid Cymru has accused | :02:55. | :02:59.
the Welsh Government of lacking any plan on how to deal | :03:00. | :03:02.
with the economic consequences of the UK leaving | :03:03. | :03:05.
the European Union. Plaid have outlined their plan, | :03:06. | :03:08.
which involves new tax powers and investment in big | :03:09. | :03:10.
infrastructure projects. But the Economy Secretary, | :03:11. | :03:12.
Ken Skates, insists he is taking action, | :03:13. | :03:13.
both to support Welsh exporters and to attract foreign | :03:14. | :03:16.
companies to invest here. Here's our Political | :03:17. | :03:18.
Correspondent, James Williams. After last week's referendum result, | :03:19. | :03:22.
is it business as usual in Wales? Wetac International is a specialist | :03:23. | :03:25.
engineering company based in Port Talbot, exporting 85% | :03:26. | :03:29.
of its products to EU countries. There is real concern Brexit | :03:30. | :03:35.
could affect not only sales, Americans invested in Wales | :03:36. | :03:39.
because at the time there was a Objective One | :03:40. | :03:45.
funding for Wales. We are currently looking | :03:46. | :03:47.
at investment in Wales to continue the growth we have seen over | :03:48. | :03:51.
the last 15 years, but right now it's unclear what will be happening | :03:52. | :03:56.
in the European Union and whether or not | :03:57. | :03:59.
that will continue. In the last financial year, | :04:00. | :04:02.
101 projects created more than 5,000 new jobs in Wales as a result | :04:03. | :04:05.
of foreign inward investment. Between 2003 and 2015 around 0.5% | :04:06. | :04:10.
of enterprises active It doesn't seem like much | :04:11. | :04:14.
but it accounted for 13.8% Given we won't know for many years | :04:15. | :04:21.
whether the UK will continue to enjoy tariff free access | :04:22. | :04:30.
to the EU single market, the Welsh Government is concerned | :04:31. | :04:34.
about the potential impact It's going to be more difficult | :04:35. | :04:37.
because most foreign investors identify membership of the single | :04:38. | :04:44.
market as the single key biggest But if you are an international | :04:45. | :04:47.
company at a moment looking to invest and you have short listed | :04:48. | :04:52.
Wales, Ireland and France, you are more likely to go | :04:53. | :04:55.
to Ireland and France As Aston Martin rightly pointed out | :04:56. | :04:57.
when they decided to come to Wales, we have a small, nimble, | :04:58. | :05:04.
dynamic, agile government. Aston Martin insists expansion plans | :05:05. | :05:06.
in Wales will continue Airbus has given assurances since | :05:07. | :05:12.
the vote over its future operations. The plane manufacturer has | :05:13. | :05:18.
a plant in Flintshire. The Japanese car-maker is said to be | :05:19. | :05:22.
considering its options. With such uncertainty, | :05:23. | :05:29.
Plaid Cymru asks where I have been shocked and dismayed | :05:30. | :05:32.
by the fact that actually There is a plan to support Welsh | :05:33. | :05:38.
exports, develop overseas markets But opinions remain as split | :05:39. | :05:47.
in the aftermath as they did It may take quite some time | :05:48. | :05:53.
to bridge the divides. Speaking earlier today, | :05:54. | :06:00.
the First Minister has expressed anger at a reported rise | :06:01. | :06:02.
in racist attacks since last week's | :06:03. | :06:05.
referendum result. During a visit to a Polish | :06:06. | :06:08.
centre in Llanelli today, Carwyn Jones said people who feel | :06:09. | :06:11.
angry should take it out on the system and not | :06:12. | :06:13.
on other groups of people. Unfortunately, there are some people | :06:14. | :06:20.
who think the vote has given them the ability to go | :06:21. | :06:23.
and abuse other people. Every country has idiots | :06:24. | :06:26.
and Wales has them as well. My message is, we won't put | :06:27. | :06:28.
up with that. There is no reason why people | :06:29. | :06:31.
who are different should Where does it all end | :06:32. | :06:34.
at the end of the day? We are a country of immigrants | :06:35. | :06:38.
actually and it's important that we work together and make sure | :06:39. | :06:42.
we get through this An independent review | :06:43. | :06:44.
into children's heart services in Bristol has found children | :06:45. | :06:49.
were put at risk of harm It found a shortage of specialist | :06:50. | :06:51.
nurses and poor communication meant children's care wasn't as good | :06:52. | :06:56.
as it should have been. The review was established | :06:57. | :06:59.
following concerns by parents, including a number from Wales, | :07:00. | :07:01.
whose children died at the hospital Here's our Health Correspondent, | :07:02. | :07:03.
Owain Clarke. A lively boy who despite his own | :07:04. | :07:14.
health problems was seldom Luke Jenkins was born with a life | :07:15. | :07:16.
threatening heart condition. He had been in and out of hospital | :07:17. | :07:22.
so often he had become He would always have toys to do | :07:23. | :07:25.
with the doctors and he would always want to watch Casualty | :07:26. | :07:31.
and Holby City and Four years ago, Luke came | :07:32. | :07:33.
to Bristol Royal Children's Hospital for what was meant to be his | :07:34. | :07:38.
last big operation. But after surgery his family say | :07:39. | :07:41.
staff on the specialist ward, Ward 32, did not realise | :07:42. | :07:43.
that his health was deteriorating despite the fact | :07:44. | :07:47.
he was bleeding heavily. The events of Good Friday 2012 | :07:48. | :07:51.
will be etched on his His heart rate just shot up | :07:52. | :07:54.
on the monitor really high. He grabbed his chest in pain, | :07:55. | :08:01.
screaming and subsequently then Then the crash team arrived | :08:02. | :08:03.
and they had to open Luke's chest in the ward, | :08:04. | :08:10.
which they said they had never had Our children were | :08:11. | :08:13.
obviously witnessing him Today's independent review concludes | :08:14. | :08:18.
Ward 32 was often under pressure and that nursing numbers had fallen | :08:19. | :08:25.
below the recommended levels on a frequent basis with a clear | :08:26. | :08:28.
risk of harm. It also found bosses | :08:29. | :08:30.
failed to understand and respond effectively | :08:31. | :08:34.
to the concerns of parents. I would like to say sorry, | :08:35. | :08:38.
particularly to those families where the review has found | :08:39. | :08:42.
that our care fell below acceptable standards, | :08:43. | :08:46.
where we didn't properly listen to their concerns and complaints | :08:47. | :08:48.
and where we didn't give them The Bristol heart unit treats around | :08:49. | :08:51.
35 children from Wales each year. Many get really good care | :08:52. | :08:58.
but today's investigation also said services in Wales and England should | :08:59. | :09:02.
be better coordinated and that cardiac care for unborn babies | :09:03. | :09:06.
in Wales was under resourced. The Welsh Government says lessons | :09:07. | :09:10.
will be taken on board in Wales. But those responses aren't enough | :09:11. | :09:14.
for Rachel from Bridgend. Her son, Jack, had to be | :09:15. | :09:17.
air lifted to London after becoming ill in Bristol, | :09:18. | :09:22.
even though his heart He has got severe learning | :09:23. | :09:25.
difficulties and I don't know what he's going to be | :09:26. | :09:34.
like in the future. And Luke Jenkins' parents say | :09:35. | :09:36.
they're also disappointed with the review and are still | :09:37. | :09:38.
searching for answers, even though each time the grief | :09:39. | :09:41.
keeps flooding back. But they will always remember | :09:42. | :09:44.
the good times. Looking at him you would not say | :09:45. | :09:47.
he was unhealthy. He had the biggest | :09:48. | :09:51.
smile on his face. The smile of a little boy | :09:52. | :09:55.
who wanted to be a doctor, A former Anglesey councillor has | :09:56. | :09:58.
been found guilty of endangering aircraft by shining a powerful torch | :09:59. | :10:07.
at RAF jets flying over his home. The prosecution said | :10:08. | :10:10.
John Arthur Jones had become obsessed with | :10:11. | :10:13.
repeated night time low flying exercises | :10:14. | :10:15.
close to his house. He's due to be sentenced | :10:16. | :10:18.
on the 1st of August. 11 members of an organised-crime | :10:19. | :10:23.
gang that terrorised people living in Wrexham have been | :10:24. | :10:25.
sentenced at Mold Crown Court. Between them, they admitted a string | :10:26. | :10:28.
of charges including supplying drugs and handling firearms | :10:29. | :10:31.
and stolen goods. The ringleader 44-year-old | :10:32. | :10:34.
William Smith To football and on the eve of Wales' | :10:35. | :10:38.
historic Euro 2016 quarter-final match against Belgium tomorrow, | :10:39. | :10:45.
captain Ashley Williams has said he should be fine for the game, | :10:46. | :10:48.
despite injuring his shoulder against Northern Ireland | :10:49. | :10:51.
last Saturday. It's Chris Coleman's 36th match | :10:52. | :10:55.
as Wales manager and he says Belgium | :10:56. | :10:57.
are in for quite a game. No doubt the biggest game we have | :10:58. | :11:03.
ever been involved in. Probably the biggest game | :11:04. | :11:05.
since the quarter-final in 1958 in the World Cup where our team | :11:06. | :11:09.
did us proud. I am positive our boys will do us | :11:10. | :11:12.
proud tomorrow night. We don't know what the result | :11:13. | :11:16.
is going to be, we can't predict the future, but what we can do is be | :11:17. | :11:19.
in control of ourselves Time for a look at what the weather | :11:20. | :11:22.
has in store for the next few days. Overnight, outbreaks of rain | :11:23. | :11:30.
clearing eastwards. Turning drier with a few | :11:31. | :11:39.
lingering showers. Brisk westerly winds | :11:40. | :11:45.
and lows of 11C to 14C. As the rain clears eastwards, | :11:46. | :11:49.
a gap of more settled weather tomorrow before this next front | :11:50. | :11:53.
pushes in to the northwest later A bright and breezy start for many | :11:54. | :11:59.
with some sunny spells, Across the UK, dry, bright | :12:00. | :12:04.
and blustery across much of south and east England and the Midlands, | :12:05. | :12:10.
but that front bringing more frequent showers | :12:11. | :12:13.
into Northern Ireland and Scotland, moving south | :12:14. | :12:16.
and eastwards through the day. A blustery end to | :12:17. | :12:19.
the day across Wales. Some sunny spells but increasingly | :12:20. | :12:28.
showery in the north and west. For football fans heading to France, | :12:29. | :12:31.
it should at least stay dry tomorrow night for Wales' quarter-final match | :12:32. | :12:38.
in Lille after a fairly mild day. Temperatures staying | :12:39. | :12:43.
in the high teens. Back home, showers continue | :12:44. | :12:46.
for a time tomorrow night. Easing overnight and turning | :12:47. | :12:48.
drier and clearer. A slightly cooler | :12:49. | :12:52.
night at 7C to 12C. Once that front bringing showers | :12:53. | :12:56.
later on Friday clears, a brief break on Saturday allowing | :12:57. | :12:58.
some settled weather. So a few showers around on Saturday | :12:59. | :13:01.
but well scattered with a lot Sunny spells and often | :13:02. | :13:06.
bright, but very blustery. Then a dry start on Sunday | :13:07. | :13:09.
with sunny spells and lighter winds. We'll be back in Breakfast | :13:10. | :13:20.
from 6:30am tomorrow morning. But until then, thanks for watching. | :13:21. | :13:24.
Nos da. Good night. I've brought you all here | :13:25. | :13:36.
to lay out a vision - a team of radio presenters | :13:37. | :13:38.
without equal. Actually, we're already... | :13:39. | :13:40.
Wynne Evans - singer, raconteur. | :13:41. | :13:44. |
