The end of the road for the leadership ambitions

:00:09.:00:16.

of the Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb.

:00:17.:00:17.

And less than 24 hours before the most historic day

:00:18.:00:20.

in Welsh football - French air traffic controllers

:00:21.:00:22.

The Conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire,

:00:23.:00:37.

Stephen Crabb, has pulled out of the Tory party's

:00:38.:00:39.

Mr Crabb came fourth in the first round of voting by Conservative MPs

:00:40.:00:45.

to elect the party's new leader and the next Prime Minister.

:00:46.:00:48.

He says he's now backing the frontrunner, Theresa May.

:00:49.:00:51.

Here's our Parliamentary Correspondent, David Cornock.

:00:52.:00:58.

Stephen Crabb at a place he'd like to call home,

:00:59.:01:00.

leaving Cabinet this morning before voting for himself.

:01:01.:01:04.

And when the results were announced this evening,

:01:05.:01:06.

Having come fourth, Mr Crabb could have gone on to Thursday's

:01:07.:01:16.

second ballot, but decided to pull out.

:01:17.:01:18.

Tonight we need to recognise that there is only one candidate

:01:19.:01:21.

who can unite our party and form a cohesive and strong

:01:22.:01:24.

government, which our country needs at this time.

:01:25.:01:28.

It is a serious moment for our country.

:01:29.:01:37.

I have taken the decision that I will not put my name

:01:38.:01:40.

forward into the next round of voting, but

:01:41.:01:42.

instead I will be lending my wholehearted

:01:43.:01:43.

So exactly a week after he launched his

:01:44.:01:46.

Stephen Crabb says he has no regrets and that his campaign

:01:47.:01:50.

highlighted the need to unite a divided Conservative Party

:01:51.:01:52.

Supporters, among them five Welsh Tory MPs, argued he'd fought

:01:53.:02:01.

He's done himself no harm and he is a class act.

:02:02.:02:15.

MPs are now focused on the three candidates left.

:02:16.:02:18.

Chris Davies supported Michael Gove, who came third,

:02:19.:02:23.

but Mr Davies was content Theresa May topped the poll.

:02:24.:02:26.

I think we all expected Theresa to win.

:02:27.:02:29.

I had a meeting with her last night at eight o'clock and I felt,

:02:30.:02:33.

this is a future Prime Minister sitting in front of me.

:02:34.:02:38.

She may be the first choice of most Tory MPs,

:02:39.:02:41.

but it's party members who will have the final say.

:02:42.:02:48.

A man who drowned after a weed-spraying buggy toppled

:02:49.:02:52.

into a lake at a golf resort in Newport died accidentally,

:02:53.:02:55.

Oliver Floyd got trapped, after the vehicle, driven

:02:56.:02:58.

by his father, lost traction and overturned in a lake

:02:59.:03:01.

on the Celtic Manor's 2010 course last March.

:03:02.:03:06.

Every hour in the UK a man dies of prostate cancer.

:03:07.:03:11.

But now scientists at Swansea University say

:03:12.:03:14.

they've made a breakthrough which could revolutionise how

:03:15.:03:16.

They've been using a harmless strain of salmonella

:03:17.:03:19.

bacteria to shrink tumours, as Carwyn Jones reports.

:03:20.:03:24.

One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.

:03:25.:03:31.

Robert Taylor was diagnosed with the disease three years ago.

:03:32.:03:36.

I should've known that when you reach a

:03:37.:03:38.

certain age you should go for a test, but I was feeling great...

:03:39.:03:41.

Now scientists believe they have developed a better

:03:42.:03:49.

way to treat the condition, involving salmonella bacteria.

:03:50.:03:53.

We normally associate that with food poisoning.

:03:54.:03:58.

But researchers at Swansea University have modified the

:03:59.:04:00.

bacteria so it's completely harmless.

:04:01.:04:01.

a therapeutic molecule reducing the cancer.

:04:02.:04:11.

Salmonella are actively growing and multiplying within the

:04:12.:04:15.

solid tumour in the patient and producing more and more

:04:16.:04:17.

A single dose should be sufficient and then the tumour

:04:18.:04:24.

The cancer cells have no natural defence against this

:04:25.:04:27.

modified strain of salmonella bacteria.

:04:28.:04:32.

Once those cells are attacked, they are starved of nutrients

:04:33.:04:34.

And then bacteria start growing and releasing an

:04:35.:04:42.

What makes this treatment so different is

:04:43.:04:47.

that unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy it targets only the

:04:48.:04:50.

tumour, leaving healthy tissue unaffected.

:04:51.:04:51.

I believe this research is a game-changer.

:04:52.:04:56.

Given the therapies that currently exist are

:04:57.:05:00.

very toxic, we feel that this could potentially change the whole way

:05:01.:05:03.

The team at Swansea will be conducting

:05:04.:05:07.

more trials in the months to come, but say their research could pave

:05:08.:05:10.

the way for a new generation of cancer treatments.

:05:11.:05:15.

Tomorrow, the most historic day in Welsh football.

:05:16.:05:22.

Wales face Portugal in the semi-final of the Euro 2016

:05:23.:05:25.

tournament tomorrow ? 59,000 fans are expected in the stadium in Lyon,

:05:26.:05:28.

but first some will have to contend with a French air

:05:29.:05:30.

Stade de Lyon was opened in January and now ready to host the Welsh team

:05:31.:05:44.

in a semifinal of a major footballing tournament for the first

:05:45.:05:47.

The heroes who have made the improbable a reality took

:05:48.:05:52.

some time this afternoon to savour the moment.

:05:53.:05:53.

They are part of something special and there is more to come.

:05:54.:05:56.

Everybody thinks that the end of this tournament is the end of

:05:57.:05:59.

This bunch of boys, there is more to come.

:06:00.:06:09.

The experience, they are going to have to get together in the next

:06:10.:06:12.

two, four, six years, long after I'm here,

:06:13.:06:14.

Portugal are yet to win a match in this competition

:06:15.:06:22.

within 90 minutes, settling on draws in each game.

:06:23.:06:26.

Wales on the other hand have four wins out of five.

:06:27.:06:29.

But stepping out and into the pressure

:06:30.:06:31.

of a major semifinal will be a new experience

:06:32.:06:33.

Portugal have come this far in four of the previous

:06:34.:06:37.

They have reached the final just the once.

:06:38.:06:42.

If they do not win and go to the final

:06:43.:06:56.

At 27 Celsius, the sun welcomed the fans to Lyon.

:06:57.:07:00.

But hundereds who have not arrived have been affected by cancelled

:07:01.:07:07.

flights because of French air traffic control strikes.

:07:08.:07:09.

Though it appears transport problems or any

:07:10.:07:14.

other obstacles will not stop supporters

:07:15.:07:15.

When we get to the final, it is my granddaughter's christening.

:07:16.:07:19.

I have been given special dispensation to come to the final.

:07:20.:07:24.

We wanted to go to the party, we are actually on the top table, it

:07:25.:07:27.

We will pay for it in the end, back to work, no more leave for

:07:28.:07:32.

Back at the 59,000 capacity stadium, Ben Davies and Aaron Ramsey

:07:33.:07:37.

were treading the turf today, knowing they will not play a

:07:38.:07:40.

part in the semifinal, both suspended.

:07:41.:07:47.

Between Wales and a date in Paris on Sunday

:07:48.:07:49.

night stand the talents of Cristiano Ronaldo.

:07:50.:07:51.

Up against him, a Real Madrid team-mate in Gareth Bale.

:07:52.:07:53.

He says the game is more than a duel between the stars.

:07:54.:07:59.

The weather's looking great in Lyon

:08:00.:08:00.

- any chance of some more sunshine here, Sue?

:08:01.:08:06.

It was not bad until today. Largely fine and dry but it will be cloudier

:08:07.:08:15.

later. Plenty of clear spells with mist and cloud developing on the

:08:16.:08:20.

south-west coast. Clear sky and light wind cooler than last night at

:08:21.:08:25.

between eight and 13. High-pressure building from the south-west and a

:08:26.:08:27.

settled spell honour but these fronts hover in the Atlantic and

:08:28.:08:34.

make inroads later. Tomorrow is fine and dry with decent sunny spells for

:08:35.:08:39.

most of Wales. Across the UK it is fine and bright further east for

:08:40.:08:43.

longest. Turning cloudier from the West at times with light rain coming

:08:44.:08:47.

in from Northern Ireland and North West Scotland. Coolest here at 14.

:08:48.:08:54.

21 in south-east England. Cloudier across Wales later. Still plenty of

:08:55.:08:59.

sunny spells but a bit of drizzle and warmer south-westerly wind,

:09:00.:09:05.

temperatures reaching 17 in Pembrokeshire -- Pembrokeshire and

:09:06.:09:11.

19 in Wrexham. The semifinal is looking dry and fine tomorrow. It

:09:12.:09:15.

will stay warm until well into the evening, holding up into the high

:09:16.:09:20.

teens. High-pressure back home keeps it settled and it breaks down

:09:21.:09:23.

tomorrow. This front pushes overnight into Thursday. Thursday

:09:24.:09:28.

May start dry but thicker cloud at the chance of patchy rain spreading

:09:29.:09:32.

from the north-west. Brisk but warm south-westerly wind. Temperatures

:09:33.:09:37.

holding up at between 16 and 18 on Thursday. When that high-pressure

:09:38.:09:42.

has broken down, and a more changeable Atlantic influence for

:09:43.:09:46.

the end of the week, some rain at times on Friday, settled and a bit

:09:47.:09:51.

warmer again on Saturday. Thanks very much. More on the website. That

:09:52.:09:58.

is programmatic robust thank you for watching. -- that is Wales Today.

:09:59.:10:02.

Thank you
