That's all from us.

0:00:010:00:02

Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

0:00:020:00:02

Welcome to Wales Today.

0:00:140:00:15

Our top stories tonight.

0:00:150:00:16

The group representing manufacturers here says there's been a significant

0:00:160:00:18

drop in confidence since last months' Brexit vote.

0:00:180:00:20

Cardiff brothel owner, Diana Jones, is in prison after seven years

0:00:200:00:23

on the run in Cyprus.

0:00:230:00:24

Now police hope to recover the nearly ?4 million she owes.

0:00:240:00:29

Good evening.

0:00:400:00:41

A month since the vote to leave the European Union -

0:00:410:00:44

manufacturers here say they've seen a significant drop in confidence.

0:00:440:00:50

EEF, the organisation which represents the sector,

0:00:500:00:51

has told this programme it's concerned Brexit may

0:00:510:00:54

affect growth in Wales.

0:00:540:00:59

It comes as Ford, which employs hundreds of workers in Bridgend,

0:00:590:01:02

has reported a fall in profits.

0:01:020:01:03

Here's our Business Correspondent, Brian Meechan.

0:01:030:01:07

M make conveyor belts for businesses from food

0:01:070:01:09

factories to airports.

0:01:090:01:12

It employs 26 people at its Tredegar base.

0:01:120:01:15

Its boss was in favour of leaving the EU and he says far from Brexit

0:01:150:01:18

reducing confidence, he is investing in his factory

0:01:180:01:20

and taking on new staff.

0:01:200:01:23

There is a world out there besides Europe and Europe

0:01:230:01:26

still needs us as a customer.

0:01:260:01:31

If they want us as a customer, they have got to be able to allow us

0:01:310:01:35

to sell our goods to them.

0:01:350:01:36

All this argument that we will lose out, that they will stop selling

0:01:360:01:39

to us, put tariffs up, it is a two-way street.

0:01:390:01:44

In my opinion, we have done the right thing.

0:01:440:01:46

A lot of people will disagree.

0:01:460:01:49

We have had the vote, my argument is to get on with it.

0:01:490:01:53

But representatives of manufacturers in Wales say Brexit is making

0:01:530:01:56

companies think twice about investing in property,

0:01:560:01:58

machines and staff.

0:01:580:02:01

I think they are concerned about all the uncertainty.

0:02:010:02:03

We have seen the uncertainty around steel and the future of steel

0:02:030:02:06

manufacturing in Wales and there is also uncertainty

0:02:060:02:08

about our access to the single market, so there is

0:02:080:02:10

a lot of uncertainty.

0:02:100:02:13

Do I invest here?

0:02:130:02:14

Do I move my facilities offshore?

0:02:140:02:17

Do I reassure some of my supply chain?

0:02:170:02:20

All of that is in the mix with regard to the uncertainty

0:02:200:02:22

businesses are facing right now.

0:02:220:02:23

The EEF's warning that investment in manufacturing is being put

0:02:230:02:26

on hold is also being heard from other sectors of the economy.

0:02:260:02:30

It's clear that the UK is leaving the European Union.

0:02:300:02:37

What is unclear is what our trading relationships will be

0:02:370:02:39

like with Europe and the rest of the world after Brexit.

0:02:390:02:44

Manufacturing is a significant part of the Welsh economy,

0:02:440:02:46

accounting for 18% of the country's output.

0:02:460:02:50

In terms of the UK, it makes up only 6% of output.

0:02:500:02:53

It has also been a growing area.

0:02:530:02:56

The number of jobs in the sector increased by 17%

0:02:560:02:58

between 2010 and 2016.

0:02:580:03:03

Ford is one of the biggest manufacturers in Wales.

0:03:030:03:12

It has just invested ?180 million in its Bridgend plant,

0:03:120:03:14

securing hundreds of jobs.

0:03:140:03:15

There are concerns the new facility only allows it to make a third

0:03:150:03:18

of the number of engines it currently produces and other work

0:03:180:03:21

at the site is coming to an end.

0:03:210:03:23

Ford says it has to consider all its options following

0:03:230:03:25

the decision to leave the EU.

0:03:250:03:28

As we think about the magnitude of the impact, we are going to have

0:03:280:03:31

to look at all parts of the business to make sure we stay on track

0:03:310:03:35

with our 6% to 8% operating margins that we need to deliver.

0:03:350:03:38

How manufacturing manages Brexit will have a major impact on how well

0:03:380:03:43

the Welsh economy as a whole deals with it.

0:03:430:03:47

The UK Government has been asked to give urgent clarification that

0:03:470:03:51

a delay in the new Hinkley Point nuclear power station

0:03:510:03:54

in Somerset won't impact the proposed Wylfa Newydd

0:03:540:03:56

development on Anglesey.

0:03:560:03:58

UK ministers say they'll decide in September whether or not to go

0:03:580:04:01

ahead with Hinkley Point.

0:04:010:04:03

The Welsh Government says its important the delay doesn't

0:04:030:04:06

damage the confidence of investors here.

0:04:060:04:11

Research has shown that young people from poorer backgrounds in Wales

0:04:110:04:14

are almost three times less likely to go to University than students

0:04:140:04:17

from more affluent areas.

0:04:170:04:21

It has prompted claims by the Sutton Trust educational

0:04:210:04:23

charity that there's still a 'deep divide' in higher education

0:04:230:04:26

which means Wales is missing out on a huge amount of talent.

0:04:260:04:32

Police say they still hope to reclaim nearly ?4 million owed

0:04:320:04:35

by a former brothel-owner, who was jailed in May after being

0:04:350:04:38

on the run for seven years.

0:04:380:04:42

When Diana Jones fled to Cyprus in 2008 she became one

0:04:420:04:45

of the biggest targets for officers looking to seize assets.

0:04:450:04:49

Jenny Rees reports.

0:04:490:04:53

The brothel boss in hiding.

0:04:530:04:55

For the last seven years, Diana Jones has been

0:04:550:04:59

living in northern Cyprus, on the run from police.

0:04:590:05:03

The BBC's Week In Week Out programme filmed her in 2008

0:05:030:05:06

as she was sentenced for running a multi-million pound vice ring.

0:05:060:05:08

The following year she was ordered to pay ?2.6 million and given

0:05:080:05:11

a 12-month suspended sentence.

0:05:110:05:15

By then, she'd already fled the country.

0:05:150:05:17

She's now in prison in Staffordshire, arrested

0:05:170:05:20

when she arrived back in the UK, and serving a four-year sentence

0:05:200:05:23

for failing to pay her confiscation order.

0:05:230:05:27

The team charged with recovering that money say that, with interest,

0:05:270:05:30

the total now stands at more than ?3.7 million.

0:05:300:05:35

If the order is not met, it will stay with her for life.

0:05:350:05:38

The confiscation enforcement team will monitor, review and carry out

0:05:380:05:43

investigations on a fairly regular basis to ascertain whether she

0:05:430:05:49

actually has any assets and at that point we'll seek permission

0:05:490:05:52

from the court and get those assets removed from her.

0:05:520:05:54

So you will never stop chasing her?

0:05:540:05:56

No.

0:05:560:05:57

She is one of our upper-end cases.

0:05:570:06:00

She is one of the top four or five investigations we have

0:06:000:06:03

currently ongoing.

0:06:030:06:05

Police said Diana Jones' brothels turned over nearly

0:06:050:06:07

?3 million in six years - a sum that funded her double life

0:06:070:06:10

in the Carmarthenshire countryside.

0:06:100:06:14

Investigators also believe it allowed her a lavish

0:06:140:06:16

lifestyle in northern Cyprus, where there's no formal extradition

0:06:160:06:19

agreement with the UK.

0:06:190:06:23

They'll now visit her at her new home in prison to establish

0:06:230:06:25

what, if anything, she can pay back.

0:06:250:06:30

An 86-year-old man who was hit by a train in Cardiff yesterday

0:06:300:06:33

lunchtime has been arrested in connection with the alleged

0:06:330:06:35

murder of his wife.

0:06:350:06:36

Angus Mayer was struck by a train at Cardiff Central station.

0:06:360:06:40

The body of 85-year-old Margaret

0:06:400:06:41

Mayer was found at an address in the Heath area of the city a few hours

0:06:410:06:45

later.

0:06:450:06:47

Mr Mayer was treated in hospital for minor leg injuries.

0:06:470:06:52

A six-year-old girl has been praised for saving the lives of her mother

0:06:520:06:55

and two of her brothers in a house-fire near

0:06:550:06:58

Pontardawe in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

0:06:580:07:00

Kelsey Davies carried 11-month-old Andrew outside,

0:07:000:07:08

before returning to help her mother and three-year-old brother, Riley.

0:07:080:07:11

Her four-year-old brother, Jack, died at the scene in Alltwen.

0:07:110:07:14

There's a week to go until the opening ceremony

0:07:140:07:16

of the Olympic Games in Rio, and one of Wales' gold-medal

0:07:160:07:19

favourites is Jade Jones.

0:07:190:07:20

The athlete from Flint became Britain's first Olympic Taekwondo

0:07:200:07:23

champion when she won gold in London.

0:07:230:07:30

Four years after her success, she says she's proud

0:07:300:07:32

to have inspired more girls to take-up the sport.

0:07:320:07:36

I've seen the difference just from London, how many girls have got

0:07:360:07:39

into tae kwon do because they've watched it on TV.

0:07:390:07:42

When I started tae kwon do, I think there was only about 4 or 5

0:07:420:07:45

girls in the whole club, whereas now, it is similar,

0:07:450:07:50

there is loads more girls and it is just amazing to see that.

0:07:500:07:55

Time now for a look at the weekend weather forecast.

0:07:550:07:57

Here's Derek Brockway.

0:07:570:08:01

It has felt a bit muggy today but will turn pleasant

0:08:010:08:03

everywhere over the weekend.

0:08:030:08:04

That means some coolish nights for the time of year.

0:08:040:08:07

Some sunshine and also one or two showers, but a lot of dry weather.

0:08:070:08:10

For tonight, it is a dry story.

0:08:100:08:13

Cloud broken, that means the cooler and fresh and night than recently.

0:08:130:08:18

Temperatures in some rural spots dropping as low as eight Celsius,

0:08:180:08:21

maybe a little bit of mist in some places by dawn.

0:08:210:08:24

Tomorrow morning, a dry start, some sunshine and quite pleasant.

0:08:240:08:27

Cloud will build as temperatures rise, maybe the odd shower

0:08:270:08:30

in the west later in the morning.

0:08:300:08:33

Across the rest of the UK, a mixture of cloud, sunny spells

0:08:330:08:36

and scattered showers tomorrow.

0:08:360:08:38

One or two heavy showers in places.

0:08:380:08:40

Having said that, parts of the Midlands, Southern

0:08:400:08:42

and south-east England will remain dry all day.

0:08:420:08:45

Pleasant tomorrow, 24 Celsius in London.

0:08:450:08:48

Quite warm there, 17 Celsius in Belfast.

0:08:480:08:52

In Wales tomorrow afternoon, there will be a few

0:08:520:08:54

showers dotted around.

0:08:540:08:55

One or two heavy ones likely.

0:08:550:08:57

Many places will stay dry and there will be some sunshine,

0:08:570:09:02

especially later in the afternoon.

0:09:020:09:04

Highs of 21 Celsius in Newport, 17 Celsius on the north

0:09:040:09:08

and west coast with a light to moderate breeze.

0:09:080:09:11

Most showers will clear away tomorrow evening,

0:09:110:09:13

just the odd one overnight.

0:09:130:09:15

Otherwise, a dry night and a cool night, as well,

0:09:150:09:17

especially in the countryside.

0:09:170:09:19

More dry weather to come on Sunday, with some sunshine.

0:09:190:09:22

Some cloud, as well, with just one or two

0:09:220:09:24

showers, but again, a lot of places will remain dry.

0:09:240:09:28

If you are heading to the National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny,

0:09:280:09:31

most of the time it will be dry, although I wouldn't rule out

0:09:310:09:34

a shower in the afternoon.

0:09:340:09:36

Temperatures around 19-20dC, so pleasant for walking around.

0:09:360:09:41

The changeable weather is set to continue next week.

0:09:410:09:43

Some dry spells, but unsettled midweek with some rain

0:09:430:09:48

and stronger winds.

0:09:480:09:50

And that's it from the late team.

0:09:500:09:53

We'll be back with all the latest in Wales at 6.35 tomorrow evening.

0:09:530:09:56

In the meantime, thanks for watching, and

0:09:560:09:57

have a great weekend.
