success. Britain's Mark Cavendish has won a silver | :00:00. | :00:13.
Welcome to Wales Today - tonight's top stories... | :00:14. | :00:15.
19-year-old Georgia Fairthorne was seriously injured | :00:16. | :00:16.
in a skateboarding accident - now a leading charity urges | :00:17. | :00:20.
young skateboarders and cyclists to wear helmets. | :00:21. | :00:22.
And a teenager is in hospital after a branch fell | :00:23. | :00:24.
on her at a National Trust property on Anglesey. | :00:25. | :00:36.
Every three minutes in the UK, someone is admitted to hospital | :00:37. | :00:41.
with a head injury - and according to a leading | :00:42. | :00:44.
brain-injury charity here in Wales, many of those cases could | :00:45. | :00:46.
Headway are calling for helmets to be compulsory for children | :00:47. | :00:50.
on bikes, and believe skateboarders would also benefit | :00:51. | :00:53.
It comes as a mother from Pembrokeshire is campaigning | :00:54. | :01:01.
for new helmet laws after a skateboard accident left her | :01:02. | :01:03.
It's fast and it's fun, but the thrills can so easily turn | :01:04. | :01:14.
into spills and for skateboarders who have no protection | :01:15. | :01:18.
for their heads, it can have devastating consequences. | :01:19. | :01:26.
That's what happened to 19-year-old Georgia Fairthorne. | :01:27. | :01:27.
She fell off her skateboard in Pembrokeshire while playing | :01:28. | :01:29.
with her brother and sister ten days ago. | :01:30. | :01:31.
She's now recovering in hospital in Cardiff, | :01:32. | :01:33.
but for a while she was in an induced coma. | :01:34. | :01:35.
As a result, her mother, Emma, has launched a social media campaign | :01:36. | :01:38.
Take care of your kids and get them a helmet while they're | :01:39. | :01:48.
on their skates and skateboards, because it only took | :01:49. | :01:50.
The Headway charity here at this hospital in Cardiff helps people | :01:51. | :01:59.
who had brain injuries, some from accidents. | :02:00. | :02:01.
They believe a sizable proportion of those injuries could have been | :02:02. | :02:04.
Every three minutes, a person is admitted to hospital | :02:05. | :02:07.
A head injury can affect people in terms of their behaviour, | :02:08. | :02:12.
in terms of their emotional well-being. | :02:13. | :02:14.
And also, obviously physically people can be affected and left | :02:15. | :02:16.
And that is just what happened to Jeff. | :02:17. | :02:19.
He's now 41, but as a teenager he came off his skateboard | :02:20. | :02:22.
He was in a coma for six weeks, and has suffered brain injuries which | :02:23. | :02:43.
still affect him 24 years on. You were a keen advocate of helmets, | :02:44. | :02:52.
then? I am, yes. When children are young... | :02:53. | :03:16.
But the message is not getting through. None of these teenagers at | :03:17. | :03:23.
this skate park are wearing helmets and they say that they rarely do. | :03:24. | :03:29.
The better you get, the more you learn to fall safely. I have nothing | :03:30. | :03:34.
against helmets, I think they are helpful, but nothing has happened | :03:35. | :03:39.
around my head area ever. But the consequences can be life-changing, | :03:40. | :03:45.
as Jeff knows. With injuries -- head injuries on the increase, their | :03:46. | :03:48.
families are determined to keep the pressure. | :03:49. | :03:49.
A teenager is in hospital with spinal injuries | :03:50. | :03:51.
after the branch of a tree fell on her at a National Trust | :03:52. | :03:54.
18-year-old Amy Brooke was struck by the branch | :03:55. | :03:57.
Her family have been waiting to hear whether or not she'll | :03:58. | :04:01.
From the investigations that have been carried out so far, | :04:02. | :04:04.
we believe that it might be, and I stress it might be, | :04:05. | :04:09.
a phenomenon known as summer drop, where a healthy tree | :04:10. | :04:11.
for no apparent reason suddenly drops a major branch. | :04:12. | :04:14.
But it's very early days so I can't confirm that is actually the case | :04:15. | :04:17.
and we will do everything we can to get the bottom of this | :04:18. | :04:20.
The recovery of an RAF helicopter, which burst into flames after making | :04:21. | :04:26.
an emergency landing in Snowdonia last week, began earlier. | :04:27. | :04:28.
A Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham in Hampshire has been sent to remove | :04:29. | :04:31.
All five people on board the aircraft escaped unharmed. | :04:32. | :04:42.
Figures suggest the number of shoppers in Wales has | :04:43. | :04:44.
reached its highest level since June 2013. | :04:45. | :04:46.
The British Retail Consortium say footfall was up by 1.7% last month, | :04:47. | :04:48.
with Wales outperforming the rest of the UK. | :04:49. | :04:50.
But there's also been a small rise in the number of empty shops. | :04:51. | :05:01.
Having only re-opened a few years ago, St Catherine's Island | :05:02. | :05:03.
near Tenby is set to CLOSE again at the end of this month. | :05:04. | :05:11.
The island's fort, which had been shut since the '70s, | :05:12. | :05:13.
opened as a tourist attraction last year. | :05:14. | :05:15.
But the current owners say developing it further has become | :05:16. | :05:17.
Hopefully there will be developers that can taken on. There are a | :05:18. | :05:30.
number of other attractions that operate in the area and they operate | :05:31. | :05:33.
very successfully and hopefully someone will come and make a of | :05:34. | :05:34.
this. -- make a success of this. In Rio, the Welsh athletes competing | :05:35. | :05:41.
for Team GB have now won a total of seven medals, | :05:42. | :05:44.
but that figure could reach double figures, according | :05:45. | :05:46.
to the head of Sport Wales. Cyclist Becky James is hoping | :05:47. | :05:48.
for a second medal tomorrow The 24-year-old has already won | :05:49. | :05:51.
silver in the keirin. Time to take a look | :05:52. | :05:54.
at the weather now - how's that Spanish Plume looking, | :05:55. | :05:56.
Derek? It's not quite as hot as we | :05:57. | :06:08.
expected, but 25 Celsius in a few places today. That's a curve meant | :06:09. | :06:12.
on what we've had recently. Yes, there is plenty more sunshine to | :06:13. | :06:16.
come tomorrow and it's going to get even warmer. For tonight first of | :06:17. | :06:20.
all, it's a dry story, this sky is clear with just a few clouds. | :06:21. | :06:25.
Temperatures in mid Wales and the marches dipping as low as nine | :06:26. | :06:28.
Celsius. For tomorrow morning, another beautiful start to the date. | :06:29. | :06:33.
The whole country asking in summer sunshine, a bit of a breeze on south | :06:34. | :06:38.
and west coast. Across the rest of the UK, a similar story. Many places | :06:39. | :06:49.
fine, but of strong August sunshine, a bit of her breeze across Northern | :06:50. | :06:57.
Iles and the Channel. A little bit cool on the East Coast because there | :06:58. | :07:01.
will be a breeze off the North Sea. Only 18 and scag nests. We can do | :07:02. | :07:06.
better than that in Wales. Sunny afternoon and warmer than today. 26 | :07:07. | :07:11.
or 27 in a few spots, about 80 Fahrenheit, with a late or | :07:12. | :07:13.
southeasterly breeze. Beautiful weather tomorrow, sunny and warm for | :07:14. | :07:20.
the Pembrokeshire show, sunny with a breeze. More fine weather and | :07:21. | :07:23.
sunshine, but later in the day clouding over from the West. If you | :07:24. | :07:28.
showers by evening in the Southwest, still warm. On Wednesday night, | :07:29. | :07:33.
maybe some rain, thundering downpours, spreading up to mid and | :07:34. | :07:37.
South wells. On Thursday comedies will tend to die away. Many places | :07:38. | :07:42.
becoming dry again and brightening up with some sunshine. Signs of a | :07:43. | :07:46.
big shame, low-pressure heading our way. It's turning things much more | :07:47. | :07:51.
unsettled for the end of the week. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. | :07:52. | :07:53.
That's Wales Today - we'll be back in breakfast | :07:54. | :07:55.
from around half past six tomorrow morning. | :07:56. | :07:57.
Until then, from all of us on the programme, | :07:58. | :08:00. |
