Tonight's headlines: No change in the overall pass rate

:00:11.:00:13.

for A Levels here, but concern that the numbers getting

:00:14.:00:16.

And in Rio, defending champion Jade Jones from Flint

:00:17.:00:19.

will go for gold at 2:00am in the Taekwando final.

:00:20.:00:31.

Thousands of students in Wales are considering their future tonight

:00:32.:00:36.

The overall pass rate is the same as last year,

:00:37.:00:40.

but the number getting the highest A* and A grades is down by 0.4%.

:00:41.:00:44.

Our education correspondent, Bethan Lewis, reports.

:00:45.:00:51.

After years of work and weeks of apprehension the results are in.

:00:52.:00:54.

It was a similar scene in schools and colleges across

:00:55.:00:56.

For some, the letters on the page made happier reading

:00:57.:01:05.

Students in Bridgend and Aberystwyth were amongst those

:01:06.:01:09.

I needed three A's and I got A*, A and a B.

:01:10.:01:14.

That is what I expected so I'm happy with that.

:01:15.:01:21.

Not everyone will get the grades and the message for those

:01:22.:01:24.

who are disappointed is not to panic and consider

:01:25.:01:27.

Those getting results that this school near Bridgend were joined

:01:28.:01:34.

by the Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams.

:01:35.:01:37.

Her job will be to look at the results and work out

:01:38.:01:40.

what the government can do to boost performance for everyone.

:01:41.:01:44.

Over the weeks to come we will be looking very carefully

:01:45.:01:47.

across all subjects and all centres that have had students sitting exams

:01:48.:01:50.

to look to see what I can do and what the Welsh Government can do

:01:51.:01:53.

and what schools and colleges can do to make sure we are on a trajectory

:01:54.:01:57.

of improving the very highest pass rates in years to come.

:01:58.:02:00.

The positives for the Welsh Government will be the good

:02:01.:02:03.

performance in maths where Wales gets a higher percentage of top

:02:04.:02:06.

In English language though it is less positive.

:02:07.:02:10.

They may take a look at the drop in the numbers taking foreign

:02:11.:02:14.

As well as A-level results, AS and Welsh baccalaureate results

:02:15.:02:19.

With only a few envelopes left most students now know what grades

:02:20.:02:26.

But for those concerned with the all Wales picture,

:02:27.:02:31.

the drop in top grades will be of concern, as well as that stubborn

:02:32.:02:34.

gap between performance in Wales and the rest of the UK.

:02:35.:02:37.

As in Wales, the overall pass rate stayed the same across the UK.

:02:38.:02:41.

The percentage of top grades was slightly down but the Welsh

:02:42.:02:47.

figure is 3% lower and while many would argue that comparing with some

:02:48.:02:51.

similar English regions is fairer, only the north-east had a lower

:02:52.:02:54.

Issues for the politicians and policymakers but for

:02:55.:03:02.

the students the focus now is on the next step.

:03:03.:03:08.

BBC Wales understands police are investigating allegations

:03:09.:03:10.

of fraud against UKIP Wales MEP Nathan Gill.

:03:11.:03:13.

The claims relate to alleged use of European parliamentary funds

:03:14.:03:16.

for party political purposes, such as election campaigning.

:03:17.:03:19.

Mr Gill says he's not been contacted by police,

:03:20.:03:22.

he's not aware of the allegations and will not comment at this stage.

:03:23.:03:30.

75 jobs will be lost at Nant Helen opencast mine in Powys.

:03:31.:03:33.

Its owners, Celtic Energy, say they're mothballing

:03:34.:03:35.

the mine for two years because Aberthaw Power Station

:03:36.:03:38.

in the Vale of Glamorgan is downgrading its operation

:03:39.:03:41.

Jade Jones is guaranteed at least a silver medal after getting through

:03:42.:03:50.

She'll face Spain's Eva Calvo Gomez in the final.

:03:51.:03:55.

The 23-year-old from Flint, who won gold at London 2012,

:03:56.:03:58.

is looking to successfully defend her title and become

:03:59.:04:00.

the fourth Welsh athlete in Team GB to get a gold in Rio.

:04:01.:04:04.

Kate Morgan has been watching the action.

:04:05.:04:10.

Her second Olympic games, his second Olympic final.

:04:11.:04:15.

Jade Jones from Flint is guaranteed at least a silver medal.

:04:16.:04:18.

After a confident display in the heats, at times the semi

:04:19.:04:22.

It wasn't until the final round that she landed her

:04:23.:04:28.

She will be hunting for more of those at 2am this morning.

:04:29.:04:35.

Watching in Rio will be the man who inspired the 23-year-old to take

:04:36.:04:38.

Full of pride and perhaps a few nerves.

:04:39.:04:43.

There is a lot more pressure on her this time.

:04:44.:04:45.

In 2012 she was virtually unknown outside the taekwondo circles.

:04:46.:04:48.

Now everybody knows her and she is ranked number one

:04:49.:04:53.

After a 48 hour wait, finally the party has started

:04:54.:05:00.

for Hannah Mills from Cardiff and Saskia Clark.

:05:01.:05:03.

All they had to do to win gold was finish today's final

:05:04.:05:13.

race in the 4-70 class and they did it in style,

:05:14.:05:15.

sailing to the beach against the rules to celebrate.

:05:16.:05:19.

And finally it is here and it's amazing.

:05:20.:05:25.

Today, we have had amazing wind, we have reenergised

:05:26.:05:31.

I can't even describe how happy we are.

:05:32.:05:37.

So too are their family and friends who followed every twist

:05:38.:05:40.

as they turned London 2012 silver into Rio 2016 gold.

:05:41.:05:42.

I am so pleased that they were able to turn their results around

:05:43.:05:50.

from London to get that gold medal position.

:05:51.:05:54.

They have worked incredibly hard for four years and they have had

:05:55.:05:57.

to sail out of their skins this week to get the results they have had.

:05:58.:06:02.

The headhunter from Flintshire is also no stranger to memorable

:06:03.:06:05.

Tonight she is now one step closer to recreating them

:06:06.:06:10.

Time to find out what the weather has in store.

:06:11.:06:22.

Forget summer. We are in for a taste of autumn and by the weekend heavy

:06:23.:06:28.

showers and strong to gale force winds and some rough seas. At the

:06:29.:06:35.

moment it is dry and humid but it won't last. Rain will spread across

:06:36.:06:38.

much of the country during the early hours. Further outbreaks of rain to

:06:39.:06:44.

come tomorrow morning and a few heavy bursts of rain in places where

:06:45.:06:51.

they south to south-easterly breeze. Across the rest of the UK rain will

:06:52.:06:56.

spread north eastwards during the day. The far north of Scotland

:06:57.:07:01.

staying dry. Behind the rain it will brighten up during the afternoon.

:07:02.:07:04.

Some sunshine and heavy showers later. Cooler than today. Close to

:07:05.:07:15.

home the rain will clear and the sun will come out. A few showers as

:07:16.:07:19.

well. Rain in Pembrokeshire by evening with strong and gusty winds.

:07:20.:07:24.

Into the weekend a deep area of low pressure on Saturday is not what you

:07:25.:07:28.

would expect to see in August. We have a Met Office warning of gale

:07:29.:07:34.

force winds in the south and west on Saturday. Plenty of blustery showers

:07:35.:07:39.

as well. A few bright sunny intervals in the mix as well. On

:07:40.:07:44.

Sunday the wind and showers will ease. It will be dry and bright for

:07:45.:07:46.

a while but more rain on the way. We're back with updates

:07:47.:07:50.

into Breakfast.

:07:51.:07:53.
