Our top stories: A media scrum at Cardiff Crown Court | :00:00. | :00:07.
for the retrial for rape of former Wales international | :00:08. | :00:10.
And another day, another Welsh football coach fired. | :00:11. | :00:12.
This time, Cardiff sack Paul Trollope. | :00:13. | :00:31.
The retrial of former Wales international footballer, | :00:32. | :00:34.
Ched Evans, has begun at Cardiff Crown Court. | :00:35. | :00:36.
Evans is accused of raping a woman after a night out in Rhyl in 2011. | :00:37. | :00:40.
He denies the offence and was in court today having won | :00:41. | :00:43.
an appeal against his original conviction back in 2012. | :00:44. | :00:53.
The jury was told the alleged victim remembered "practically | :00:54. | :00:55.
nothing" of the night and was too drunk to consent. | :00:56. | :00:57.
Supported once again by his partner, Ched Evans is back in court to try | :00:58. | :01:12.
to clear his name once and for all. He started his professional career | :01:13. | :01:17.
at Manchester City in 2002. 13 Wales caps followed. In 2009, he signed | :01:18. | :01:23.
for Sheffield United for ?3 million. But in 2012, that Korea paused. He | :01:24. | :01:28.
and fellow footballer Clayton MacDonald were charged and stood | :01:29. | :01:33.
trial for rape. The jury at Caernarfon Crown Court acquitted | :01:34. | :01:37.
MacDonald, but found Mr Heaven is guilty. He served half of a | :01:38. | :01:43.
five-year sentence. But new evidence emerged, his conviction was quashed, | :01:44. | :01:48.
and a retrial was ordered. Ched Evans is extremely grateful | :01:49. | :01:51.
that because of appeal has ruled that his conviction for rape was | :01:52. | :01:55.
unsafe and should be quashed. For the first time in four years, | :01:56. | :01:58.
Ched Evans is playing professional football once again. For the league | :01:59. | :02:03.
one side Chesterfield. There is no prospect of Ched Evans going back to | :02:04. | :02:07.
jail. He has already served a custodial sentence as part of that | :02:08. | :02:11.
first trial, but he has always maintained he is innocent in all of | :02:12. | :02:15.
this, and that this retrial over the next two weeks, he will hope the | :02:16. | :02:20.
jury will agree. It is the prosecution case that after a night | :02:21. | :02:25.
out in real inmate 2011, Ched Evans' friend Clayton MacDonald took a | :02:26. | :02:28.
woman back to a hotel to have sex. But the court was told today that | :02:29. | :02:31.
Ched Evans also had sex with the woman in that hotel room. It is | :02:32. | :02:37.
alleged she was too drunk to be able to consent to sex with Mr Evans. | :02:38. | :02:44.
Prosecuting, the QC said, we submit she was so intoxicated, for whatever | :02:45. | :02:47.
reason, that she did not know what was happening. Sex without consent | :02:48. | :02:55.
the prosecution also told the jury that although Ched Evans was and | :02:56. | :03:00.
still is a well-known footballer, they should put aside any media | :03:01. | :03:05.
commentary or the views of anyone else during this retrial. | :03:06. | :03:08.
The cord heard that some comments, especially those made online, were | :03:09. | :03:11.
one-sided and often unhelpful. Councils here will be | :03:12. | :03:14.
forced to work together, pooling their resources | :03:15. | :03:16.
with neighbouring authorities to provide key services | :03:17. | :03:19.
like social care and transport. It comes after the Welsh government | :03:20. | :03:22.
dropped plans to cut 22 councils But there are concerns that regional | :03:23. | :03:27.
committees would add another layer of bureaucracy | :03:28. | :03:32.
and reduce accountability. Local authorities work together in | :03:33. | :03:45.
all sorts of ways already. What we don't have is a systematic approach | :03:46. | :03:50.
to it, and we don't have an approach where local authorities know that | :03:51. | :03:54.
this is required of them. It is optional, and it is very mixed, but | :03:55. | :03:58.
they do it, and there is no suggestion that this is somehow a | :03:59. | :04:02.
new tier of local government, or that you can't have answer ability | :04:03. | :04:03.
in it. Six members of staff have been | :04:04. | :04:04.
suspended at a mental health unit The action was taken | :04:05. | :04:07.
at Bryn Hesketh Unit after concerns were raised by another member | :04:08. | :04:11.
of staff over some Betsi Cadwaladr University Health | :04:12. | :04:13.
Board says an independent The cost is yet to settle on the | :04:14. | :04:31.
scandal that rocked North Wales just last year, and here we are yet again | :04:32. | :04:33.
with concerns being raised about aspects of care on another mental | :04:34. | :04:39.
health unit in North Wales, so I am very concerned, particularly for the | :04:40. | :04:43.
families and patients that might be involved. | :04:44. | :04:44.
A 33-year-old man from Cardiff has been charged with six terrorism | :04:45. | :04:47.
offences, including membership of so-called Islamic State. | :04:48. | :04:48.
Samata Ullah was arrested last Tuesday by the Metropolitian Police | :04:49. | :04:50.
Counter Terrorism Command supported by the Wales Extremism | :04:51. | :04:52.
Two houses in the city were also searched as part | :04:53. | :04:56.
Fire crews were called to Caerphilly railway station during this | :04:57. | :05:06.
evening's rush-hour after a blaze which is thought to have broken out | :05:07. | :05:10.
Emergency services were called at around 5.30 and the train | :05:11. | :05:15.
was evacuated - it's also had an effect on services tonight, | :05:16. | :05:19.
Another day, and another Welsh football club sacks its coach. | :05:20. | :05:24.
Today, after five months in the job, Cardiff City sacked Paul Trollope. | :05:25. | :05:30.
The Bluebirds are second from bottom in the Championship after only | :05:31. | :05:34.
two wins in 11 matches. Ben Price reports. | :05:35. | :05:42.
It has been three seasons since Cardiff City rubbed shoulders with | :05:43. | :05:49.
English football's elite, but with just eight points from 11 games in | :05:50. | :05:53.
the championship so far, a return to the Premier League is all but a | :05:54. | :05:56.
distant dream. It was all change once again at Cardiff City at the | :05:57. | :05:59.
start of the season. Enter Paul Trollope, once a coach at the club, | :06:00. | :06:04.
he was soon handed the top job back in May. This is a club with big | :06:05. | :06:10.
expectations, and so, an eighth place finish last year was not | :06:11. | :06:14.
enough to satisfy the bosses. So the new head coach promised to deliver | :06:15. | :06:16.
the goods. We are going to try and hit the | :06:17. | :06:19.
ground running. We're going to try to give the fans a team they are | :06:20. | :06:25.
proud of, and proud to support, and proud to watch. | :06:26. | :06:28.
But that hasn't quite happened. They aren't shocking position, | :06:29. | :06:31.
second from bottom in the championship. | :06:32. | :06:33.
They have lost six of their last seven games, having scored in seven | :06:34. | :06:36.
of the 11 championship games they have played in. It has not been good | :06:37. | :06:40.
enough, and looking at Paul, he doesn't look like a man or a manager | :06:41. | :06:43.
who can turn things around, so the club had to react. | :06:44. | :06:48.
Despite very little activity in the summer transfer window, some may | :06:49. | :06:50.
argue the current team has enough experience to get themselves back up | :06:51. | :06:54.
the table. It has been a tumultuous few years for the Bluebirds | :06:55. | :06:58.
faithful, both on and off the field. Since a change and a few years ago, | :06:59. | :07:02.
there have been fallout and protests over changes to club colours under | :07:03. | :07:06.
the big decisions. It has left many fans feeling fed up. | :07:07. | :07:10.
We have got a lack of experience, within the football world, on the | :07:11. | :07:16.
board. We have got people who have got good financial backgrounds, but | :07:17. | :07:21.
no football experience, and that has proved, you know, the way we were | :07:22. | :07:23.
rebranded. I think the coach has a lot to do | :07:24. | :07:27.
with the results, so unfortunately, I think some blame has to be had by | :07:28. | :07:29.
him. With an international break this | :07:30. | :07:33.
weekend, Cardiff now have ten days to find a replacement. The question | :07:34. | :07:36.
is, who will be ready for such a challenge? | :07:37. | :07:37.
The equally uncertain world of the weather next - | :07:38. | :07:39.
Thank you, Jamie. Well, October is normally the wettest month of the | :07:40. | :07:48.
year here in Wales, but we're not expecting much of any rain this | :07:49. | :07:52.
week, with the emphasis being on a lots of dry weather over the next | :07:53. | :07:56.
few days. Breezy, and it will turn cooler over the next couple of days. | :07:57. | :08:02.
For tonight, plenty of cloud around, which may be thick enough for the | :08:03. | :08:05.
odd spot of drizzle, but no more than that. Dry for most of us. Eight | :08:06. | :08:13.
breezy night, and those temperatures around 9-11. Tomorrow's chart shows | :08:14. | :08:16.
a big area of high pressure over Sweden. This high is like a block of | :08:17. | :08:20.
air stopping weather coming in from the Atlantic, and the wind is coming | :08:21. | :08:24.
in from the east or Southeast, so tomorrow morning will be breezy, | :08:25. | :08:30.
with gusty winds ups blowing, maybe the odd spot of drizzle thirsting | :08:31. | :08:34.
and quite cloudy. During the morning, it will tend to brighten up | :08:35. | :08:37.
with some sunshine and much of the country dry. Across the rest of the | :08:38. | :08:43.
UK, it is a similar story, really. Many places dry, patchy cloud, and | :08:44. | :08:47.
Sunny spells. The best of the sunshine in the south and north west | :08:48. | :08:51.
of Scotland. Generally cooler than today, only 14 Celsius in | :08:52. | :08:55.
Scarborough, 16 in Plymouth, with a keen wind blowing from the east or | :08:56. | :08:59.
Southeast. Close to home, a fine afternoon tomorrow. We should see | :09:00. | :09:03.
more sunshine than we have seen today. A few patches of cloud in | :09:04. | :09:09.
Powys, and temperatures lower, 14-17dC, with that gusty winds from | :09:10. | :09:14.
the East or Southeast. Morrow evening, fine and dry, cloud will | :09:15. | :09:17.
spread from the East overnight, staying dry, clearing part of the | :09:18. | :09:22.
South and West, and a cooler night. Thursday will be a cooler day. An | :09:23. | :09:27.
easterly wind brings maybe one or two macro light showers to parts of | :09:28. | :09:30.
mid and North Wales, and maybe the odd one in the South as well. Then | :09:31. | :09:34.
on Friday, more dry weather. The best of the sunshine in the | :09:35. | :09:38.
south-west, no more than the light shower. So, fairly benign weather | :09:39. | :09:42.
over next few days. It macro thank you very much. | :09:43. | :09:44.
Next tonight, as Wales continue their world cup campaign, | :09:45. | :09:46.
former international Dean Saunders looks at how Welsh grassroots | :09:47. | :09:48.
football can help keep the Euros dream alive. | :09:49. | :09:50.
That's Wales Today. Goodnight. | :09:51. | :09:57. |
