And Rowan was born male but identifies as female. | :00:17. | :00:20.
Concern tonight that transgender people are waiting too long | :00:21. | :00:22.
There are claims it'll bring thousands of jobs | :00:23. | :00:43.
and millions of pounds to the Welsh economy. | :00:44. | :00:44.
Many businesses and politicians here say a third runway | :00:45. | :00:47.
But tonight the Welsh government stands accused of supporting | :00:48. | :00:52.
the project without getting anything back in return, | :00:53. | :00:55.
unlike ministers in Scotland, who have secured guaranteed building | :00:56. | :00:57.
Here's our Business Correspondent Brian Meechan. | :00:58. | :01:08.
It is still one of the busiest airports in the world but it has | :01:09. | :01:11.
been slipping behind the competition, as they've expanded | :01:12. | :01:14.
while Heathrow is operating at its limits. | :01:15. | :01:18.
But it is about to get a lot bigger, bringing more people to the | :01:19. | :01:22.
It helps to make sure that businesses from Wales can easily get | :01:23. | :01:28.
We are looking forward to having the Western rail | :01:29. | :01:34.
link, that will mean a rail link directly from Wales into Heathrow, | :01:35. | :01:37.
making it much more convenient and much easier for students, | :01:38. | :01:39.
overseas investors, tourists, to get to Wales | :01:40. | :01:41.
According to the Independent airports commission, | :01:42. | :01:43.
Wales will benefit from the expansion of that London hub. | :01:44. | :01:46.
It estimated that 8400 jobs would be created but that's over the next 35 | :01:47. | :01:50.
It could also mean ?6.2 billion in benefits to the economy. | :01:51. | :02:01.
But it can only fully bring international opportunities closer | :02:02. | :02:03.
to Wales if they can get to Heathrow easily. | :02:04. | :02:06.
We have important improvements around rail, I think we | :02:07. | :02:09.
are desperately crying out for the M4 black route | :02:10. | :02:11.
but all of that fits together in order to make Wales a | :02:12. | :02:14.
Cardiff Airport has seen a significant increase in | :02:15. | :02:21.
passenger numbers in the last 12 months. | :02:22. | :02:23.
Madrid announced today shows it continues to attract allies and | :02:24. | :02:27.
Cardiff airport has a target of increasing to 2 million | :02:28. | :02:34.
And to 3 million in the next ten years. | :02:35. | :02:40.
the expansion of Heathrow can help them deliver that grow. | :02:41. | :02:44.
I asked the chairman of Cardiff Airport if he | :02:45. | :02:46.
was worried about losing business to Heathrow. | :02:47. | :02:52.
We will never ever compete with Heathrow but we can offer the | :02:53. | :02:55.
people and passengers of Wales and enhanced service to fly | :02:56. | :02:58.
potentially from Heathrow via Cardiff to | :02:59. | :02:59.
In return for supporting the new runway | :03:00. | :03:16.
in Heathrow, ministers in Edinburgh secured a guarantee that Scottish | :03:17. | :03:19.
companies will get ?200 million worth | :03:20. | :03:20.
of building contracts from the project. | :03:21. | :03:31.
There are questions tonight about the Welsh Government's | :03:32. | :03:33.
Wales is going to gain the consequential as | :03:34. | :03:36.
We should have been asking for solid commitment and massive gains like | :03:37. | :03:47.
the Scottish Government has already done. | :03:48. | :03:48.
Welsh ministers say they are | :03:49. | :03:50.
in ongoing talks with the airport and are discussing the possibility | :03:51. | :03:52.
of securing manufacturing contracts for Welsh companies. | :03:53. | :03:54.
There will be plenty of scrutiny from Wales and | :03:55. | :03:56.
any economic benefits are by no means a done deal. | :03:57. | :03:59.
The National Farmers Union Cymru says the price of milk is up, | :04:00. | :04:01.
but profits are not being passed on to dairy farmers, | :04:02. | :04:04.
The union called for change at the Welsh Dairy Show in Carmarthen. | :04:05. | :04:15.
A message on a wreath placed by Prince Charles on the 50th | :04:16. | :04:18.
anniversary of the Aberfan disaster has been taken. | :04:19. | :04:20.
the village last week, where some of the 144 victims | :04:21. | :04:26.
of the tragedy are buried, but by Sunday his message had gone. | :04:27. | :04:28.
South Wales Police say they're investigating the incident. | :04:29. | :04:37.
There's concern tonight that transgender people are waiting up | :04:38. | :04:39.
A trans person doesn't identify with the gender | :04:40. | :04:45.
they were born with - and many are referred to a gender | :04:46. | :04:48.
The number of young people being referred to specialist | :04:49. | :04:52.
clinics have more than doubled in the last year. | :04:53. | :04:54.
Finding her feet as the person she wants to be. | :04:55. | :05:05.
17, from Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan. | :05:06. | :05:11.
She's studying circus skills at this college in Bristol and she's happy, | :05:12. | :05:16.
I couldn't go out and make friends because they'd be trying to have | :05:17. | :05:23.
Looking back at it now, I can see that other problems | :05:24. | :05:28.
I was having like depression, anxiety, even just schoolwork, | :05:29. | :05:34.
was actually stemming from me not being able to sort of express | :05:35. | :05:37.
It's been two years since she first approached her GP to be referred | :05:38. | :05:48.
There are none in Wales, so Welsh patients are referred | :05:49. | :05:51.
Yes, in nine months, we are going to be seen | :05:52. | :05:58.
And we are two years on and we still haven't been seen | :05:59. | :06:02.
And I can't tell you how heartbreaking it is, actually. | :06:03. | :06:13.
Abergavenny GP Helen Webberley offers private healthcare | :06:14. | :06:14.
She says it's crucial to get the right treatment | :06:15. | :06:18.
A huge number of children who I see have been to their GP several times, | :06:19. | :06:24.
expressing gender variance but also expressing anxiety, depression | :06:25. | :06:27.
and are put on antidepressants, so we've got young people being put | :06:28. | :06:30.
on drugs for depression when actually the root | :06:31. | :06:32.
cause of the depression isn't being addressed. | :06:33. | :06:43.
The number of young people being referred to gender identity | :06:44. | :06:46.
clinics from Wales has risen from 17 to 40 in the last year | :06:47. | :06:49.
and the numbers are increasing year on year. | :06:50. | :06:51.
Treatments, naturally, will vary for each individual, | :06:52. | :06:53.
and in Wales a mental health assessment is done before | :06:54. | :06:55.
Last week, the Welsh Government allocated ?1 million to be | :06:56. | :07:02.
spent on gender identity and eating disorder clinics. | :07:03. | :07:04.
The leader of Anglesey Council is calling on the developers | :07:05. | :07:15.
of a proposed new nuclear power station on the island to guarantee | :07:16. | :07:17.
Horizon says a consultation on Wylfa Newydd - | :07:18. | :07:23.
which ends at midnight - will be the last one before it | :07:24. | :07:26.
Anglesey Council says its backing of the project has certain | :07:27. | :07:34.
They have got an assessment that only 45% of the operational | :07:35. | :07:42.
Obviously, I am pushing for that to be nearer 100%. | :07:43. | :07:45.
It's very important that the operational workforce comes | :07:46. | :07:47.
Football and Newport drew 2-2 against Barnet at home in League 2. | :07:48. | :07:56.
And in the National League, Dean Keates will be disappointed | :07:57. | :07:58.
after a last minute goal left Wrexham with a 2-2 draw too, | :07:59. | :08:01.
at home to Barrow in his first match in charge. | :08:02. | :08:04.
Let's see what the weather has in store - Derek's | :08:05. | :08:11.
Thanks very much. Well, we have said goodbye to the cold weather for a | :08:12. | :08:18.
while. Pembrokeshire was the warmest place in the country today. 15 | :08:19. | :08:23.
Celsius there. Tonight, most places dry. Some mist and fog and not cold. | :08:24. | :08:34.
It Celsius. Tomorrow, mist and fog patches in the self and that will | :08:35. | :08:41.
slowly lift and clear. Most places dry. Plenty of cloud. One to light | :08:42. | :08:46.
showers, but no more than that. Across the rest of the UK, watch out | :08:47. | :08:50.
for fog patches in southern England, particularly along the M4. They will | :08:51. | :08:57.
slowly lift and clear. Patchy rain for Scotland. That was the | :08:58. | :09:01.
south-east into northern England during the day. Behind it, | :09:02. | :09:05.
brightening up across northern Scotland and some blustery showers. | :09:06. | :09:08.
In Wales tomorrow afternoon, not too bad. Try and bright. Some sunshine. | :09:09. | :09:15.
Cloud increasing across the North. Fairly mild. Tomorrow night, cloud | :09:16. | :09:22.
may bring one or two spots of drizzle. Dry and clear in the south. | :09:23. | :09:27.
Some mist and fog patches forming. These will slowly lift on Thursday. | :09:28. | :09:31.
Some bright and sunny intervals and dry. As we look ahead to Friday, | :09:32. | :09:39.
high-pressure over at the south of Britain. That will dominate our | :09:40. | :09:43.
weather as we look ahead to the weekend. So the outlook is mostly | :09:44. | :09:47.
dry and settled. Fairly cloudy and mild. Chilly at night where the sky | :09:48. | :09:52.
does clear and still the risk of mist and fog. | :09:53. | :09:54.
Thank you for watching from all of us on the programme goodnight. | :09:55. | :10:00. |
