Smaller but taller ? more ddtails on plans for Jersey s new hospital. | :00:00. | :00:24.
We need a flexible solution that can deal with whatever health | :00:25. | :00:29.
developments take place in the future. | :00:30. | :00:30.
You're watching the late news in the Channel Islands. | :00:31. | :00:32.
Also in tonight's programme: A new deputy has been | :00:33. | :00:37.
elected in Guernsey, the results are in from tod`y's | :00:38. | :00:40.
Restaurants and hotels will have to move to make w`y | :00:41. | :00:48.
Ministers have formally lodged proposals for a brand new, | :00:49. | :00:52.
purpose-built hospital to go behind the current one to make it | :00:53. | :00:56.
cheaper, quicker and less disruptive to patients. | :00:57. | :01:00.
Now the Health Minister just has to get the States to agree to it. | :01:01. | :01:03.
Emma Chambers has tonight's top story. | :01:04. | :01:07.
Jersey's General Hospital is here to stay, despite it | :01:08. | :01:09.
being the chosen location for the island's future one. | :01:10. | :01:12.
That's because the new hosphtal will be a separate building built | :01:13. | :01:16.
around the back along Newgate Street. | :01:17. | :01:20.
It's significantly more efficient and more affordable | :01:21. | :01:23.
to build in a single phased, shorter programme with a single | :01:24. | :01:27.
interface to the existing hospital - that's very different | :01:28. | :01:30.
There will therefore be less disruption to patients | :01:31. | :01:37.
They've managed to go ahead with plans for this smaller, | :01:38. | :01:41.
We were looking for 20,000 square metres on the ground floor, | :01:42. | :01:48.
that enabled us to have Outpatients, Emergency and imaging services | :01:49. | :01:50.
all on the ground floor, making it more accessible to people. | :01:51. | :01:53.
With this new scheme we are looking at a 10,000 square metre footprint | :01:54. | :01:56.
and what the Patriotic Stredt car park allows us to do is to come | :01:57. | :02:00.
in at a number of different levels, into Outpatients on those ldvels, | :02:01. | :02:03.
which gets us over that problem of having everything | :02:04. | :02:06.
The plans also mean all of this will have to go. | :02:07. | :02:13.
I come here every afternoon to have coffee with my family and friends. | :02:14. | :02:17.
At the end of the day, we'll be losing out on something | :02:18. | :02:20.
that is good, but also we would be gaining a lot more, a new hospital. | :02:21. | :02:24.
Other changes include moving the Outpatients department to across | :02:25. | :02:27.
the park, where hospital staff accommodation is. | :02:28. | :02:38.
And using the old hospital as an education centre | :02:39. | :02:42.
But only if this new ?46 million hospital idea gets the go-ahead | :02:43. | :02:53.
from the States at the end of next month. | :02:54. | :03:02.
Earlier today, I spoke to Jersey's Health Minister, | :03:03. | :03:04.
Senator Andrew Green, and asked him what's he going to do | :03:05. | :03:06.
about all those businesses that will now need to move. | :03:07. | :03:10.
That is probably the downside of this scheme. | :03:11. | :03:15.
We know that two of the biggest businesses are willing selldrs, | :03:16. | :03:19.
and of course one or two others perhaps it's a little bit | :03:20. | :03:21.
This will be a matter of negotiation with them. | :03:22. | :03:29.
How can you ensure that people continue to get good health care | :03:30. | :03:32.
This car parking is central to your plans. We did not want to btild | :03:33. | :03:53.
around patients. We did not want to be renovating and building `round | :03:54. | :03:56.
them, it is not good for thd patients and not good for infection | :03:57. | :04:00.
control, and it is also much more expensive. We wanted to be `ble to | :04:01. | :04:04.
give the contract to a clear sight. The car park was there. Think about | :04:05. | :04:09.
mothers with pushchairs, and young children. They will be able to come | :04:10. | :04:14.
straight from the car park hnto the hospital. I would also applx to | :04:15. | :04:18.
those who are disabled or those bringing in elderly relativds as | :04:19. | :04:23.
well. How can you ensure th`t people continue to get good health care | :04:24. | :04:24.
while the hospital is being built? That is a good question, | :04:25. | :04:26.
it's an important question. You will have noted that we won t | :04:27. | :04:28.
have moved inpatient servicds at all, and that's why | :04:29. | :04:31.
it is essential to get thosd few buildings on the side | :04:32. | :04:33.
of Patriotic Street, the businesses we talked | :04:34. | :04:35.
about at the beginning, and that allows us to build | :04:36. | :04:37.
a new energy centre while the old energy centre runs | :04:38. | :04:40.
current inpatient services. The only services moving | :04:41. | :04:44.
are administration and Outp`tients. I can safely say that we will be | :04:45. | :04:49.
able to maintain a safe, efficient and good service | :04:50. | :04:52.
during the changeover. The results are in from Guernsey's | :04:53. | :04:58.
by-election in the Vale district. He was one of four candidatds | :04:59. | :05:04.
standing in today's election, which was called after the death | :05:05. | :05:09.
of Deputy Dave Jones in Julx. He's laid out his priorities | :05:10. | :05:12.
for the new role. At the moment it looks like | :05:13. | :05:25.
governors are fairly busy in certain areas. Government is set. Wd had a | :05:26. | :05:31.
government created in April and May, and I am effectively floating at the | :05:32. | :05:36.
moment. The areas I am interested in our transport, small businesses and | :05:37. | :05:39.
the tourist economy. Next tonight, nearly a third of nine | :05:40. | :05:42.
and ten-year-olds in Guernsdy That's one of the key findings | :05:43. | :05:45.
after the height and weight of primary school pupils | :05:46. | :05:49.
were measured to give a picture If this is making you hungrx, | :05:50. | :05:51.
new statistics may curb Because figures out today | :05:52. | :05:57.
for childhood obesity aren't good. One in six five and six-year-olds | :05:58. | :06:05.
are overweight or obese, and one in three nine | :06:06. | :06:08.
and ten-year-olds are. Children who are overweight are more | :06:09. | :06:17.
likely to become overweight adults, and that entails all the problems | :06:18. | :06:20.
of diabetes, heart disease We want children to be the right | :06:21. | :06:23.
weight as children, so they grow up to be | :06:24. | :06:28.
a healthy weight as an adult. Education is a key part of the plan | :06:29. | :06:33.
to slim down the figures, and the pupils at this school seem | :06:34. | :06:36.
to know their stuff. If you are not healthy, | :06:37. | :06:39.
you might get diabetes It is good to eat lots of fruit | :06:40. | :06:43.
and not loads of chocolate. I eat bread in the morning, | :06:44. | :06:51.
and I don't have crisps. I have been watching this | :06:52. | :07:05.
and telling my parents about this. It can make a huge difference | :07:06. | :07:10.
because the messages are coling and they can educate | :07:11. | :07:16.
their parents and the community As soon as you start educathng | :07:17. | :07:24.
the children, it will seep out There may be no quick fix | :07:25. | :07:28.
for the problem, but any success in cutting the figures over | :07:29. | :07:33.
the coming the years will bd Jersey's finance industry added ?14 | :07:34. | :07:36.
billion to the UK economy l`st year, according to a report | :07:37. | :07:44.
by economic consultants. Representatives from the island | :07:45. | :07:46.
are in London trying to persuade UK politicians, | :07:47. | :07:50.
civil servants and think tanks of the value of Jersey to the UK | :07:51. | :07:53.
and the rest of Europe. The research estimates Jersdy's | :07:54. | :07:56.
finance industry generates ` quarter And it suggests the island pumps | :07:57. | :07:59.
?150 billion of foreign invdstment Some football news now, | :08:00. | :08:04.
and Guernsey FC have lost against Cray Wanderers | :08:05. | :08:14.
at Hayes Lane. They were hoping they would walk | :08:15. | :08:17.
away with their first away win of 2016 but the Wanderers | :08:18. | :08:19.
beat them 1-0. Weather-wise, today | :08:20. | :08:24.
seemed to be a lot milder than I expected it to be - | :08:25. | :08:27.
I wore far more layers But, how are the temperaturds | :08:28. | :08:30.
shaping in the days ahead? Hello, good evening. We havd got a | :08:31. | :08:46.
settled pattern of weather `t the moment. Still the chance of a fuse | :08:47. | :08:50.
showers around and we should have some bright and dry weather. Some | :08:51. | :08:54.
sunshine and a few showers `cross the island state in the day. The | :08:55. | :08:58.
main setup over the next few days is for us to continue to see an area of | :08:59. | :09:02.
high pressure that is just `bout close enough to keep us reasonably | :09:03. | :09:06.
fine and dry, but the low pressure to the east is still there `nd it | :09:07. | :09:10.
still sits there as we move through tonight and to a good part of the | :09:11. | :09:13.
day tomorrow. One weather sxstem that might trickle towards ts, or | :09:14. | :09:19.
try to get towards us, is that front on the western side of the `rea of | :09:20. | :09:24.
low pressure. We hold onto this through Friday, but into thd weekend | :09:25. | :09:28.
we get an area of low presstre developing down here and th`t will | :09:29. | :09:34.
freshen the easterly wind, so more of a breeze on Saturday. With these | :09:35. | :09:38.
weather fronts eventually tried to get towards us by the time we get to | :09:39. | :09:43.
Sunday night and more espechally into Monday. Some showers are | :09:44. | :09:46.
possible for the rest of thd night, but not any of those and it becomes | :09:47. | :09:51.
keep the mist from forming. Still keep the mist from forming. Still | :09:52. | :09:57.
quite chilly. Some sunshine tomorrow morning, and it may be that we cloud | :09:58. | :10:01.
over in the afternoon and the potential for a few showers later in | :10:02. | :10:05.
the day and a top temperature of 14 Celsius. The wind mainly from the | :10:06. | :10:12.
North or Northeast. You're `lso starting to change. Showers across | :10:13. | :10:16.
Central parts of Spain and Portugal, eastern parts of France and into | :10:17. | :10:21.
Belgium and Germany, where ht is quite cold. For us, we hold onto | :10:22. | :10:27.
some pride, dry weather, but a stiff, easterly breeze developing by | :10:28. | :10:28.
Saturday. Have a good night. Well, that's it from BBC | :10:29. | :10:32.
Channel Islands for today, but Alison will be back | :10:33. | :10:34.
with you at 6:30pm Before that, your local radho | :10:35. | :10:36.
stations BBC Guernsey and BBC Jersey that cool breeze to factor in. Here | :10:37. | :11:08.
is Matt with the national outlook. Good evening. Just as the weather | :11:09. | :11:12.
starts to quieten down across many parts of the country it notched up a | :11:13. | :11:16.
gear across the east coast today. Near gale force winds whipping up | :11:17. | :11:20.
rough seas for our weather watchers in north Yorkshire and in Norfolk. | :11:21. | :11:26.
Low pressure across the North Sea, still in place tonight bringing | :11:27. | :11:29.
gusty winds down the east coast and showers as well. Away from that most | :11:30. | :11:33.
will be dry. An isolated shower down to west Cornwall and the Isles of | :11:34. | :11:36.
Scilly but it's high pressure in charge in the west. Lighter winds | :11:37. | :11:42.
and clearer skies and coldest of the conditions. A night to snuggle down | :11:43. | :11:47.
under the duvet. Frost-free to the east of England. The breeze will | :11:48. | :11:51.
still be there in the morning. One or two showers on the coast. Most | :11:52. | :11:54.
will get away with a dry morning commute. Sunniest weather to the | :11:55. | :11:58.
west. Again a touch of frost here. One or two mist and fog patches | :11:59. | :12:01.
Greater chance of frost to start the day in Scotland and Northern Ireland | :12:02. | :12:05.
where some of the mist and fog patches will last to mid-morning. | :12:06. | :12:09.
But winds are lighter here and with | :12:10. | :12:10. |
