Caught by American intelligence - the prison worker from Jersey jailed | :00:13. | :00:14.
for distributing indecent images of children. | :00:15. | :00:20.
Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC | :00:21. | :00:25.
The vision of Alan Whicker - and how his legacy is helping | :00:26. | :00:30.
It has been a privilege to be able to support this hospital in Alan's | :00:31. | :00:47.
named because site meant everything to him. We start a spell of | :00:48. | :00:52.
unsettled weather. Christmas will be mild and often quite windy. I will | :00:53. | :00:55.
have the details later in the programme. | :00:56. | :00:59.
An IT officer at Jersey's prison has been jailed for 18 months | :01:00. | :01:02.
for distributing indecent images of children. | :01:03. | :01:06.
28 year-old Simon Edward Gascoyne was caught after Homeland Security | :01:07. | :01:09.
Simon Gascoyne on his way to HMP La Moye after being jailed | :01:10. | :01:20.
Gascoyne, who worked at the prison, had been sharing indecent images | :01:21. | :01:26.
Jersey Police found Post-it notes with evidence of online user names | :01:27. | :01:34.
Today the court heard Gascoyne had used a mobile phone app to share | :01:35. | :01:39.
at least twelve images with seven different groups. | :01:40. | :01:42.
Some of the images were in the most severe category. | :01:43. | :01:45.
He was caught after US authorities sent Jersey Police | :01:46. | :01:47.
a disk of evidence showing his online activity. | :01:48. | :01:50.
And a later investigation showed he'd accessed pornography - | :01:51. | :01:54.
albeit legal - while at his desk at La Moye. | :01:55. | :01:59.
The court heard Gascoyne claimed he didn't know why he'd done it, | :02:00. | :02:01.
he didn't find the images of children sexually appealing, | :02:02. | :02:04.
and that he was only interested in trading images. | :02:05. | :02:08.
He described his own behaviour as disturbing, and said sharing | :02:09. | :02:10.
Solicitor General Mark Temple, acting for the prosecution, | :02:11. | :02:21.
said the former IT worker recognised he'd ruined his life. | :02:22. | :02:23.
His Advocate Pierre Landick said Gascoyne knew his behaviour had been | :02:24. | :02:26.
repugnant and abhorrent and asked for a sentence of community service. | :02:27. | :02:29.
The court heard he was fearful of prison having worked there. | :02:30. | :02:34.
But the judge William Bailhache said the community would expect a jail | :02:35. | :02:37.
term, although he recognised the defendant needed help. | :02:38. | :02:44.
Gascoyne is now back at La Moye, but on the other side of the bars. | :02:45. | :02:49.
Well the BBC asked the prison for an interview but instead | :02:50. | :02:51.
"There was no evidence of illegal activity performed on States | :02:52. | :03:05.
We have robust content filtering in place for all users of States | :03:06. | :03:09.
systems, which prohibits access to pornography and other unsuitable | :03:10. | :03:12.
Hundreds of people trying to leave and arrive in the islands by ferry | :03:13. | :03:18.
in time for Christmas have had to rearrange their journeys. | :03:19. | :03:20.
The Condor Liberation service between the Channel Islands | :03:21. | :03:22.
and England has been cancelled tomorrow because of bad weather. | :03:23. | :03:24.
The company says it's been making sure everyone can still get | :03:25. | :03:27.
to where they want to in time for Christmas. | :03:28. | :03:30.
We all have seen, just by looking at the national news | :03:31. | :03:33.
and weather forecast, this big weather | :03:34. | :03:34.
One thing for sure is that neither the masters of our ships | :03:35. | :03:41.
or the operations team, if the weather is such | :03:42. | :03:43.
that it is not safe on appropriate to sail, we will cancel the ceiling. | :03:44. | :03:52.
that it is not safe on appropriate to sail, we will cancel the sailing. | :03:53. | :03:55.
We do not wish to do that and we don't want | :03:56. | :03:58.
to do it and we know about the disruption it causes. | :03:59. | :04:00.
But, frankly, it is the best thing to do. | :04:01. | :04:02.
A reward of up to ?1,000 is being offered for information | :04:03. | :04:05.
that helps catch and convict the person responsible for a serious | :04:06. | :04:08.
A 33 year-old man walking home after a night out is believed | :04:09. | :04:12.
to have had his head stamped on in Guelles Road last Friday, | :04:13. | :04:15.
The BBC has agreed to take over the cost of providing free | :04:16. | :04:21.
TV licences for eligible islanders over the age of 75 in Jersey. | :04:22. | :04:24.
The BBC will pick up the bill from 2018, saving the public purse | :04:25. | :04:27.
more than a quarter of a million pounds by 2020. | :04:28. | :04:31.
The new licence deal between the corporation | :04:32. | :04:35.
and the island's government also included a commitment from the BBC | :04:36. | :04:38.
to continue to provide Jersey with radio and television services. | :04:39. | :04:46.
Christmas is a time for giving, and while many islanders will spend | :04:47. | :04:49.
time opening presents and feasting, there are of course some | :04:50. | :04:51.
Three years ago a Jersey woman started the online group | :04:52. | :04:58.
A Gift For Christmas, appealing for donations | :04:59. | :05:00.
It started as a simple idea, helping somebody less | :05:01. | :05:08.
Three years on and it's snowballed with the help of social media. | :05:09. | :05:15.
Once I set up the page, within one hour, there was 100 plus likes. | :05:16. | :05:19.
I started to get messages and loss of support. | :05:20. | :05:25.
I started to get messages and lots of support. | :05:26. | :05:28.
People suggested they would help us, which | :05:29. | :05:29.
Since then, it has absolutely grown to what it is | :05:30. | :05:33.
Food, toys, toiletries and treats donated by islanders | :05:34. | :05:37.
They go to three Jersey charities, including The Grace Trust, | :05:38. | :05:42.
We assist them by providing food parcels for them. | :05:43. | :05:50.
They appeared with a truck to pick up the food and I | :05:51. | :05:53.
had to send them away to get a bigger lorry. | :05:54. | :05:55.
I think they were amazed by how much we had collected. | :05:56. | :06:00.
This Christmas, the team of volunteers have already wrapped | :06:01. | :06:02.
For us, it is about being able to just have the satisfaction that they | :06:03. | :06:08.
are getting something on Christmas Day. | :06:09. | :06:21.
A lot of us take for granted being able to walk down the stairs | :06:22. | :06:24.
on Christmas Day and have a pile of presents under the Christmas tree. | :06:25. | :06:28.
And the project has become so popular, they hope to spread even | :06:29. | :06:32.
The team's been been chosen to organise the 2021 | :06:33. | :06:35.
When Jersey hosted last year, thousands | :06:36. | :06:38.
Julia Bowditch, who was a venue manager at the London Olympics, | :06:39. | :06:42.
has been named as the Games Director and will work with the chairperson | :06:43. | :06:45.
and Specsavers co-founder Dame Mary Perkins. | :06:46. | :06:48.
The event logo will be revealed in the New year. | :06:49. | :06:52.
He once said he counted himself one of the luckiest men in the world, | :06:53. | :06:56.
now, his legacy is helping some of the unluckiest. | :06:57. | :06:59.
A foundation set up in memory of the journalist and broadcaster | :07:00. | :07:02.
Alan Whicker, who lived in Jersey, has been tackling child | :07:03. | :07:06.
His widow's been to Uttar Pradesh to see the difference it's making, | :07:07. | :07:11.
Alan Whicker was best known for travelling the globe reporting | :07:12. | :07:17.
But his partner of more than 40 years says it was what he saw | :07:18. | :07:22.
when the cameras stopped that made the biggest impression. | :07:23. | :07:34.
The thing about India is that it grabs by the throat | :07:35. | :07:38.
Everything is exaggerated and extreme. | :07:39. | :07:44.
The colours, noises, wealth and poverty. | :07:45. | :07:45.
Because under that clipped moustache, there was | :07:46. | :07:48.
He did not like the idea of climbing over huddled bodies to drink | :07:49. | :07:52.
champagne on a moonlit terrace with a film star. | :07:53. | :07:54.
Going to school and learning is a way out of poverty for children | :07:55. | :08:01.
here, but sometimes something incredibly simple gets in the way. | :08:02. | :08:03.
Children with bad eyesight aren't able to follow lessons at school, | :08:04. | :08:08.
and they can't afford to get glasses or the help they need. | :08:09. | :08:11.
That's where the Vision Van comes in, paid for by | :08:12. | :08:14.
the Whickers World Foundation, it's a mobile one-stop shop to help | :08:15. | :08:17.
They've been doing the first ever eye tests at schools in the region. | :08:18. | :08:26.
It is amazing to see all the schoolchildren. | :08:27. | :08:28.
Over 600 children here and at least 90 have been on the Vision Van. | :08:29. | :08:32.
Many have had treatments allowing them to get | :08:33. | :08:34.
If you can identified things early, they have a much | :08:35. | :08:44.
better chance of getting out of poverty. | :08:45. | :08:47.
The foundation's also paid for a children's ward in one | :08:48. | :08:50.
of the few eye hospitals in Uttar Predesh. | :08:51. | :08:53.
So the Channel Islander famous for seeing the world, | :08:54. | :08:56.
has been helping some of the world's poorest children see it too. | :08:57. | :09:02.
I am so glad that Alan has enabled us to do something, | :09:03. | :09:05.
even however small, to make a difference. | :09:06. | :09:16.
So, darling, if you're listening, I am not chasing all those girls. | :09:17. | :09:19.
Let's take a look at tomorrow's weather with David Braine. | :09:20. | :09:26.
Not much to cheer about in terms of the weather. It is quite mild. | :09:27. | :09:34.
with rain turning up later and some with rain turning up later and some | :09:35. | :09:38.
of it will be heavy and becoming increasingly windy. The mild air and | :09:39. | :09:43.
the wind sticking with us through Christmas. One weather front moving | :09:44. | :09:48.
into Central Europe. Clear skies for a time behind that before | :09:49. | :09:51.
low-pressure races across the Atlantic bringing a cold front to us | :09:52. | :09:54.
towards the end of the afternoon tomorrow. Ahead of it, it becomes | :09:55. | :10:05.
windy. Blustery, westerly winds and we should see temperatures in double | :10:06. | :10:08.
figures and by Christmas Day, the same setup with high pressure to the | :10:09. | :10:11.
south of us and low-pressure to the north of us. Overnight tonight, | :10:12. | :10:13.
temperatures will get into single figures. A lot of dry weather and | :10:14. | :10:24.
winds. The winds becoming more southerly by dawn tomorrow morning. | :10:25. | :10:29.
Here is the forecast for tomorrow. A lot of the day is dry, increasing | :10:30. | :10:33.
windy. We see some rain turning a ban by the end of the day, that rain | :10:34. | :10:39.
will likely be heavy and widespread and accompanying that rain, strong | :10:40. | :10:43.
winds. Winds could be gusting up to 45 miles an hour. And for Christmas | :10:44. | :10:48.
Day, it is mild and breezy. Have a good night. | :10:49. | :10:49.
You're up to date with the news from the Channel Islands. | :10:50. | :10:52.
itself, it's not white, but it's warm. Temperatures could reach 15. | :10:53. | :11:10.
I suppose you could say today was the calm before the storm. A winter | :11:11. | :11:17.
chill, plenty of sunshine, but more wintry showers in Scotland, more | :11:18. | :11:20.
snow over the higher ground. Some of this snow will melt for a time | :11:21. | :11:24.
tomorrow because there is wind and rain coming in from the Atlantic. So | :11:25. | :11:27.
we'll leave the Highlands behind, head out and look at the cloud here, | :11:28. | :11:32.
this tell-tale hook of cloud, signifies a storm is developing, | :11:33. | :11:36.
this is Storm Barbara, of course, it is a deep and deepening area of low | :11:37. | :11:40.
pressure, rushing towards the north-west of Scotland. | :11:41. | :11:43.
Steppingening the winds and bringing rain into the north-west by tomorrow | :11:44. | :11:47.
morning. Ahead of it fairly quiet. Already the showers in the north | :11:48. | :11:51.
less wintry. Fewer and clearer skies, across England and Wales for | :11:52. | :11:55.
a time, it could be chilly. One or two mist and fog patches. Out to the | :11:56. | :11:59.
west winds pick up later, cloud increases and the rain arrives and | :12:00. | :12:03.
very quickly tomorrow across Scotland and Northern Ireland | :12:04. | :12:05. |
