suicide verdict on a Leicestershire teenager whose death sparked a huge

debate about online bullying. 14`year`old Hannah Smith was found

hanged at her home in Lutterworth last year. Today's inquest was told

there was no evidence that she'd been victimised by cyber bullies.

daughter had been bullied from the age of 12, by different children,

was found hanged in her bedroom by her sister last August. At the time

her family said she had been bullied online and asked for the owners of

criminal charges. That led to a police investigation which bind

messages on her account which were described as Weill and criminal

harassment but during the investigation it was buying the only

person who could have made them was Hannah herself. Her school did not

have been aware of the bullxing or self harm which father had spoken

about to the family. The cotrt heard evidence of the girl's suicidal

evidence of the girl's suichdal thoughts and intentions but her

school and her family could not have known what she was about to do that

morning and, on hearing all the facts, the coroner recorded a

verdict of suicide. The death sparked a huge debate about online

bullying and calls for tighter regulation of online sites. Tonight

the website issued this statement. Some young people are using social

networking sites to explore issues of their emotional distress. This is

the worrying trend and we are looking for appropriate measures to

support young people with self harm tendencies. That is a promising

pledge but sadly comes too late to help Hannah. Earlier I spoke to Jon

Brown who's from the charitx, the NSPCC. I began by asking him how

common are cases like this. We have been a wee of a case like this

previously where someone sent bullying messages to themselves It

is unique. It indicates someone bullying messages to themselves. It

was extremely upset, disturbed about something or a number of thhngs and

effectively this was a cry for help. Is there anyway that somehow this

cry for help could have been picked up? Yellow mark it is important that

circumstances where someone is clearly upset online that the

channels of communication are open between child and parents. They need

to be able to talk to their parents, or two teachers at school or someone

conversation is so important. With regard to bullying online which we

are seeing more strategies being developed to help address the

problem. They want support and advice for young people and parents

and for industry and government to take it more seriously. We need a
