It's almost 6.30, you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:00.:00:00.

On our programme tonight - hand in your weapons.

:00:07.:00:08.

The message from two grieving mothers.

:00:09.:00:13.

Both their sons were stabbed to death in Leicester and both are

backing a new amnesty. If you carry a knife, there are consequences. I

tell us about their chances of becoming pregnant.

:01:00.:01:08.

to the programme with Dominic Heale First tonight, they've borne

:01:09.:01:10.

the same indescribable loss - Now two mothers of young men stabbed

:01:11.:01:13.

to death in Leicester have spoken out in support

:01:14.:01:18.

of the city's knife amnesty. The month-long campaign -

:01:19.:01:24.

which began today - is part of new efforts to stem

the rising number of in a moment but first the women tell

:01:37.:01:43.

Cheryl Armatrading says the pain isn't easing -

:01:44.:01:49.

it's getting worse. 20-year-old Antoin Akpom had been

:01:50.:01:52.

planning his future. He'd set up his own business,

:01:53.:01:55.

secured a job teaching football in America,

:01:56.:01:58.

and he was coaching in the UK. Then, in September 2013,

:01:59.:02:02.

that all stopped. He died from a single stab wound

on the year before. To bury your own child,

:02:49.:02:51.

there's no words for it. I won't be able to watch him grow

:02:52.:03:00.

up, he won't be able to achieve... just because somebody

:03:01.:03:04.

decided to use a knife. There's no changing anything,

:03:05.:03:05.

and you just literally have to live Two mothers sharing their loss

:03:06.:03:11.

and sharing a new goal - For me, it's about looking at,

:03:12.:03:17.

why is it happening? Not just putting a plaster

:03:18.:03:28.

on when it happened, but putting prevention

:03:29.:03:30.

measures into place. It's simple, do not carry

:03:31.:03:34.

a knife, because if you're not going to use it yourself,

:03:35.:03:37.

it might be turned And then it'll be your mum

:03:38.:03:39.

or siblings that are getting that news that they are never

:03:40.:03:43.

going to see you again. Listen to a mother's cry,

:03:44.:03:46.

look around - lots of people no Listen to a mother's cry,

friends that have been lost through knife crime -

:03:53.:03:55.

and think about the emotions that they felt at that

:03:56.:03:57.

time when it happened. That's what you'll be

:03:58.:03:59.

doing to somebody else. We've just seen two very

:04:00.:04:01.

powerful interviews there Talking to me now about the knife

:04:02.:04:03.

amnesty being run by Leicestershire Police

:04:04.:04:07.

is Inspector Simon Preston. Just start by telling me,

:04:08.:04:08.

why has the number of people caught carrying knives in Leicestershire

:04:09.:04:13.

increased in the past year I think it just goes to show

:04:14.:04:15.

the proactive work that we are doing to try to reduce knife crime and

:04:16.:04:20.

reduce the impact of knife crime. We all know what a devastating

:04:21.:04:23.

effect knife crime has. We need to do all we can to take

:04:24.:04:26.

knives off the street and certainly catching people with knives,

:04:27.:04:30.

recovering them, is one We've seen you hold

:04:31.:04:32.

knife amnesties before. How likely are they to

:04:33.:04:36.

actually work, though? How likely is it that this one

:04:37.:04:38.

is going to be effective? Well, I'm not going to stand

:04:39.:04:41.

here and say that I expect us to recover hundreds

:04:42.:04:44.

and hundreds of knives. It's a way of us raising awareness,

:04:45.:04:46.

it's starting a conversation, it's hopefully taking some knives

:04:47.:04:50.

off the street, and any offence that we prevent by taking one

:04:51.:04:53.

knife off the street We really are trying

:04:54.:04:56.

to promote his message that lives We'll have more on this story

:04:57.:05:01.

tonight on BBC One at 10:25. New research by scientists

:05:02.:05:11.

in the East Midlands suggests a hormone measured in a woman's hair

:05:12.:05:13.

can affect the success of some Nurture fertility asked

:05:14.:05:16.

the university of nottingham to compare levels of the stress

:05:17.:05:24.

hormone cortisol as our health You can tell a lot from a few

:05:25.:05:39.

strands of hair. It's been shown to contain one of the hormones,

:05:40.:05:44.

cortisol, that's important in regulating fertility. One centimetre

:05:45.:05:48.

of hair can tell you about the levels of cortisol that have been in

:05:49.:05:51.

circulation in the previous month. What we found was that cortisol,

:05:52.:05:57.

measured in the three months prior to starting IVF, predicted the

:05:58.:06:00.

likelihood of women becoming pregnant. Such that women who had

:06:01.:06:04.

higher levels of this hormone in their hair were much less likely to

:06:05.:06:09.

become pregnant. Here at the University of Nottingham, this is

:06:10.:06:12.

something of a world first. Although cortisol levels in human hair have

:06:13.:06:15.

been looked at before, it hasn't been done in relation to IVF. The

:06:16.:06:22.

major fertility clinic in Derbyshire funded the University of Nottingham

:06:23.:06:25.

research. Our success rates are high already, we're looking at 60 to 70%

:06:26.:06:30.

pregnancy rate. In the patients with normal cortisol levels, we saw that

:06:31.:06:36.

rate. With higher levels, the pregnancy rate fell to around 40%.

:06:37.:06:40.

There was no other explanation. We looked at factors such as age or the

:06:41.:06:43.

number of eggs, really important predictors, they were not as

:06:44.:06:46.

powerful as the cortisol measurements in the hair. That is

:06:47.:06:51.

really interesting. Joanne has had ABF -- IVF and has eight-year-old

:06:52.:06:56.

Reggie. IVF is very stressful because the main thing you have to

:06:57.:07:00.

have is hope. It is ultimately the thing that can also drive you

:07:01.:07:03.

crackers. Anything that can lower your stress levels is always a

:07:04.:07:08.

bonus. Sarah turned to acupuncture to relieve stress. She now has two

:07:09.:07:13.

children, but it was seven cycles of IVF. Total, utter, emotional

:07:14.:07:19.

roller-coaster. You start thinking, I'm going to get the baby out of

:07:20.:07:24.

this, and then I went for scams and realised I haven't got as many eggs

:07:25.:07:28.

as I thought there'd be or there wasn't as many follicles, so you

:07:29.:07:32.

think, OK, that's reducing my chances. The high cortisol levels

:07:33.:07:36.

might not be all down to stress. The researchers wanted to do a bigger

:07:37.:07:40.

study. We've done a really small study on a sample of just under 90

:07:41.:07:46.

women. We want to do is work again. We are actively seeking

:07:47.:07:48.

collaboration now with clinics and patients.

:07:49.:07:52.

We're in the swim with the amazing Hayley.

:07:53.:07:56.

A paralympic prospect - despite putting her health

:07:57.:07:58.

on the line every time she gets in the pool.

:07:59.:08:09.

The University of Nottingham has asked for a full report

:08:10.:08:11.

from its Students Union after a team taking part in a pub crawl

:08:12.:08:14.

appeared to dress up as victims of the Alton Tower's rollercoaster

:08:15.:08:17.

The students made their fancy dress outfits for the annual fundraising

:08:18.:08:25.

event and posed for photos for a student news website.

:08:26.:08:29.

They've apologised unreservedly for any offence or distress they may

:08:30.:08:32.

have unwittingly caused to the teenagers who had legs

:08:33.:08:35.

amputated following last year's Smiler ride accident.

:08:36.:08:40.

I think what a lot of other people think,

:08:41.:08:42.

and that is that they were trying to portray it.

:08:43.:08:44.

They came out saying it was a traditional costume,

:08:45.:08:47.

but it's not traditional to have mutated legs attached to it,

:08:48.:08:53.

So the poll asked people if they thought it was

:08:54.:08:57.

offensive or not - just a simple yes/no question -

:08:58.:08:59.

Campaigners fighting to have Grantham A re-opened overnight,

:09:00.:09:04.

say they've had a productive meeting with the Health Secretary.

:09:05.:09:07.

Opening hours have been reduced because of a shortage of doctors.

:09:08.:09:11.

The town's MP and six campaigners met Jeremy Hunt last night.

:09:12.:09:14.

They say he assured them that the A will not close,

:09:15.:09:18.

and that he would raise their concerns with

:09:19.:09:20.

It's now well over a year since lines 2 and 3 of the Nottingham tram

:09:21.:09:27.

And the problems during construction may seem like a distant memory.

:09:28.:09:33.

But today, it's emerged that councils paid almost ?3.5 million

:09:34.:09:38.

to help businesses stay afloat during the works.

:09:39.:09:40.

For months on end, it was chaos on the Chilwell high road.

:09:41.:09:47.

Now, more than a year has passed since the tramline opened,

:09:48.:09:51.

but the businesses will never forget the destruction.

:09:52.:09:53.

People couldn't get here, so they just didn't come,

:09:54.:09:57.

they couldn't park, people sometimes couldn't get into the shops.

:09:58.:10:00.

There was a great big hole outside our shop at one stage.

:10:01.:10:03.

Takings dropped by probably half and now they've

:10:04.:10:05.

dropped by three quarters, I think.

:10:06.:10:08.

There's just nobody coming in, hardly.

:10:09.:10:12.

In all, 128 businesses received financial support, and today we can

:10:13.:10:14.

reveal how much taxpayers' money was needed to keep them afloat.

:10:15.:10:21.

Nottinghamshire County Council gave ?1.33 million to shops

:10:22.:10:24.

and cafes in Beeston, and that figure was matched

:10:25.:10:26.

The city also paid around three quarters of a million

:10:27.:10:31.

to businesses in Clifton, meaning the total amount spent

:10:32.:10:33.

For many of the shops and cafes around here,

:10:34.:10:40.

this money wasn't compensation, and without it they'd

:10:41.:10:42.

Some are still struggling, and two businesses told me that,

:10:43.:10:47.

after much heartache, they are now selling up.

:10:48.:10:51.

The Cameron House Shop moved seven weeks ago,

:10:52.:10:53.

We had no options during the tram work.

:10:54.:10:59.

We had to literally stand there and try and trade

:11:00.:11:02.

on a building site, so we didn't have compensation.

:11:03.:11:05.

The financial assistance was to assist us to keep trading

:11:06.:11:07.

during the tram works, so there's no compensation been

:11:08.:11:09.

offered or ever will be offered, unfortunately.

:11:10.:11:18.

A lot of time in shopping areas, you do have a high

:11:19.:11:21.

With the financial assistance package, we were able to help

:11:22.:11:25.

businesses through that long period of construction,

:11:26.:11:27.

but there will always be certain changes in terms of the shops

:11:28.:11:30.

The figures released today have reignited the debate

:11:31.:11:35.

about the success of Nottingham's tram extension.

:11:36.:11:36.

Studies show there are now fewer empty shop fronts in Beeston,

:11:37.:11:39.

but other areas may never see the benefit.

:11:40.:12:03.

Charnwood Borough Council is discussing introducing a public

:12:04.:12:07.

space protection order for Bradgate Park. The orders are used to deal

:12:08.:12:12.

with anti-social behaviour and could see pet owners hit with a ?100 on

:12:13.:12:17.

the spot fine, as Amy Harris reports. Bradgate Park is a jewel in

:12:18.:12:23.

Leicestershire's crown, but protecting the vast and varied

:12:24.:12:27.

landscape and its wildlife is becoming challenging. Patrolling the

:12:28.:12:33.

830 acres of public land are Rangers like Matt. Today, assisted by Holly.

:12:34.:12:38.

And they have their work cut out. With an increase in dog fouling,

:12:39.:12:44.

dear chasing and littering. It is totally unacceptable, really. It's

:12:45.:12:48.

just spoiling it for everybody. They come to enjoy the park. It shouldn't

:12:49.:12:55.

be like that. It's just irresponsible dog ownership.

:12:56.:12:58.

Bradgate Park is one of Leicestershire's best loved beauty

:12:59.:13:01.

spots and those in charge want to keep it that way. Charnwood Borough

:13:02.:13:05.

Council looks set to approve a public spaces protection order for

:13:06.:13:10.

the park and nearby wood. It targets dog owners who fail to clear up

:13:11.:13:14.

after their pets or keep them under control. The order updates existing

:13:15.:13:20.

bylaws and comes after trial restrictions were introduced in

:13:21.:13:23.

June. Now, those who break the rules could face a ?100 on the spot fine.

:13:24.:13:30.

We realise that a lot of good dog owners out there are very

:13:31.:13:35.

responsible, so we're not expecting a big enforcement activity, and

:13:36.:13:39.

these controls are brought in place to try to control people and make

:13:40.:13:43.

sure everyone can enjoy the park. It's a good idea, especially with

:13:44.:13:47.

young children around. The last thing you want is then walking

:13:48.:13:51.

through it. The park is a wonderful place to come and people should

:13:52.:13:54.

respect it. They shouldn't just assume they can do as they like. I

:13:55.:14:00.

don't know whether it's enforceable, the park wardens, who would take

:14:01.:14:04.

control of that. Enforcing the order may be difficult, but those in

:14:05.:14:07.

charge of the threat of the find will encourage the minority of dog

:14:08.:14:10.

owners to follow the majority's lead.

:14:11.:14:16.

Prince Harry is to pay another visit to Nottingham, focusing on youth

:14:17.:14:19.

His return to the city next Wednesday will be his fifth

:14:20.:14:22.

He'll tour the Ice Centre and the Full Effect recording studio

:14:23.:14:26.

before officially re-opening a police station where

:14:27.:14:28.

The council was to help tackle anti-social behaviour. It has

:14:29.:14:52.

attracted a lot of criticism from the public, with many saying the

:14:53.:14:55.

homeless are being targeted by the order. Richard Davis has more.

:14:56.:15:01.

This part in West Bridgeford is one of the places that the public space

:15:02.:15:06.

protection order will be enforced. It will allow officers to issue ?100

:15:07.:15:13.

fixed penalty notices to those causing anti-social behaviour, and

:15:14.:15:16.

rough sleepers. It has angered many who feel it targets the homeless.

:15:17.:15:22.

Vicky Turton has set up a position in the hope of preventing it coming

:15:23.:15:26.

into effect. Defining the one people in Nottinghamshire who cannot pay a

:15:27.:15:30.

fine is not the answer. They won't pay it, they want benefit from it.

:15:31.:15:34.

If anything, it will drag them away from society and seeking help. The

:15:35.:15:38.

policy has been approved by councillors and will apply to these

:15:39.:15:41.

areas in the borough. In a statement in response to the petition and

:15:42.:15:45.

recent criticism, the authority says...

:15:46.:16:10.

But Nottinghamshire homeless charity Framework say it's a step in the

:16:11.:16:17.

wrong direction. Gower we don't agree with the decision to try to

:16:18.:16:21.

criminalise homeless people and take the first step into intervening with

:16:22.:16:26.

them through enforcement. Offenders could be fined if they don't use

:16:27.:16:30.

recommended support services or later prosecuted. The council has

:16:31.:16:33.

not said when the audible comment, but it is expected sometime soon.

:16:34.:16:41.

There is quite a lively debate about this on our Facebook page.

:16:42.:16:46.

All sorts on our Facebook page, have a look.

:16:47.:16:47.

Still to come,... Dennis Skinner has seen a fair few dramas in his time

:16:48.:16:58.

and now he is the subject of a new film that has been two years in the

:16:59.:17:00.

making. We have a little clip of that. More

:17:01.:17:12.

drama now, possibly... Usually, in football.

:17:13.:17:15.

First tonight: The Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Al Hasawi says he's

:17:16.:17:18.

consulting his legal team after allegations he demanded

:17:19.:17:20.

huge payments as part of any potential takeover.

:17:21.:17:22.

Al Hasawi has said the article - published in a national

:17:23.:17:25.

The article also claimed some players were threatening a revolt

:17:26.:17:31.

But today club captain Chris Cohen told us the players never considered

:17:32.:17:35.

it and any payment issues will be resolved.

:17:36.:17:44.

There's been issues a couple of times since I've been

:17:45.:17:46.

here and they always get sorted out, as they will be this

:17:47.:17:49.

As I said, you don't want it to happen and you don't want...

:17:50.:17:57.

You'd rather everything run completely smoothly,

:17:58.:18:00.

but they are small issues and talk of a players' revolt

:18:01.:18:03.

or whatever it was - if that's going to

:18:04.:18:05.

Well, it really was an insightful interview with Cohen.

:18:06.:18:15.

You can watch the whole thing on our BBC Nottingham Sport Facebook page.

:18:16.:18:20.

Onto Leicester City and what a few days for manager Claudio Ranieri.

:18:21.:18:24.

This week Leicester became one of just three teams

:18:25.:18:27.

in the Champions League to take 9 points out on 9 in the competition.

:18:28.:18:34.

in the Champions League to take 9 points out of 9 in the competition.

:18:35.:18:37.

The other two sides are Athletico Madrid and Barcelona.

:18:38.:18:41.

It's also his 65th birthday today but plans to retire

:18:42.:18:44.

At Derby County, after a period of poor form manager Steve McClaren

:18:45.:18:57.

says it's important his player don't feel scared and play without fear.

:18:58.:19:01.

Had two games in charge - including the Rams first home win

:19:02.:19:06.

in the league this season - and McClaren says his

:19:07.:19:08.

priority is to restore the players confidence.

:19:09.:19:17.

You know, the biggest word we've used with

:19:18.:19:19.

You've not won for six months - courage - go out and play in front

:19:20.:19:25.

of 30,000 people and we'll take responsibility for mistakes

:19:26.:19:27.

because that's the one thing when you do play that style -

:19:28.:19:30.

you're going to make mistakes, but you can't let that affect you.

:19:31.:19:36.

And congratulations to Alfreton Town.

:19:37.:19:37.

They claimed the final place in the first round proper

:19:38.:19:42.

They beat Gateshead 3-2 in extra time.

:19:43.:19:45.

Their reward - a home tie against Newport next month.

:19:46.:19:50.

Now, if there's one thing all swimmers know, it's how much

:19:51.:19:53.

time and energy goes into the sheer hard slog of producing winners.

:19:54.:19:56.

And we've been pretty good at it in the East Midlands

:19:57.:19:59.

over recent years - Becky Adlington and Adam Peaty are

:20:00.:20:03.

And now there's a young prospect for the Paralympics who may just

:20:04.:20:10.

be the next big thing, as Ed Collard's been finding out.

:20:11.:20:15.

Training time for Grantham's young swimming stars -

:20:16.:20:20.

all wearing the regulation club cap with one notable exception -

:20:21.:20:26.

Last year, aged 16, she had her first epileptic seizure,

:20:27.:20:35.

so the one thing we did was we bought her an orange hat

:20:36.:20:38.

so that when she does her training sessions, she'll often

:20:39.:20:40.

wear her orange hat so she's easy to pick out in the lanes just

:20:41.:20:43.

in case something happened in the water.

:20:44.:20:45.

It's not stopped her - she just happily takes her

:20:46.:20:47.

Epilepsy is only the latest obstacle Hayley's had.

:20:48.:20:54.

This recent brain scan dramatically illustrates just why she's missing

:20:55.:21:01.

much of the power and control down her right side.

:21:02.:21:05.

Not that you'd know from watching her in the pool -

:21:06.:21:08.

It means I've got to kick more to catch them up, so it's harder,

:21:09.:21:14.

so that makes it more difficult and stronger for me.

:21:15.:21:19.

Hayley, don't breathe in that first stroke.

:21:20.:21:23.

If we look from the perspective that she needs to swim

:21:24.:21:28.

with the swimmers that are not disabled swimmers -

:21:29.:21:31.

to keep up with them, it's a massive, massive effort.

:21:32.:21:33.

And she never complains and she never sees her disability

:21:34.:21:35.

And such dedication has turned her into the one

:21:36.:21:48.

of the nation's best young prospects in para swimming, already top

:21:49.:21:50.

In her disability category, she is first in breaststroke,

:21:51.:21:54.

She is the second-fastest ever behind a paralympian in 100

:21:55.:22:01.

I need to keep healthy, so let's do swimming.

:22:02.:22:11.

Swimming, it's easy to be disabled because you're not pooling hard.

:22:12.:22:13.

So swimming is Hayley's life - and not just the dozens

:22:14.:22:18.

There's also the day job - an apprenticeship at

:22:19.:22:24.

the Meres Leisure Centre, much of it in the training pool

:22:25.:22:27.

She's helping kids to swim and on the way to becoming a real

:22:28.:22:45.

Paralympic star. Fantastic. That's amazing. Back to the film we

:22:46.:22:50.

Here is the weather. Very high pressure, off the roof. Settled

conditions at the minute, it will stay with us through the next couple

:25:24.:25:26.

of days and into the weekend with high-pressure dominating our

:25:27.:25:29.

weather. Couple of showers coming in from the area of low pressure over

:25:30.:25:33.

the North Sea, which we've seen today. Some lovely pictures coming

in. Just about caught the rainbow here near Derby. However, here in

Nottinghamshire, Steve took this lovely picture of the Glaxo Smith

Kline building, where we had plenty of sunshine. It has been a mixed

:25:48.:25:52.

bag. If we have any showers out and about as we speak, they will clear

:25:53.:25:56.

and it will be a mostly dry night tonight and it will get a bit

:25:57.:26:00.

chilly. Not hugely so, temperatures will not drop that low, just nip in

:26:01.:26:04.

the air. One or two showers still in places. These clear through,

:26:05.:26:09.

variable cloud, clear spells, and because of those clear spells and

:26:10.:26:13.

light breeze, we will get mist and fog forming. Temperatures down to

:26:14.:26:16.

seven or 8 degrees for most towns and cities, but in more rural spots,

:26:17.:26:20.

lower than that. Chilly starts tomorrow morning. If you have missed

:26:21.:26:23.

and fog across southern and western parts, stubborn to clear but it will

:26:24.:26:28.

do so through the morning. We import trade area -- drier air tomorrow.

:26:29.:26:32.

Most of us, dry and fine day. A gentle northerly breeze,

:26:33.:26:35.

temperatures around 12 or 13 degrees. For the 21st of October

:26:36.:26:38.

tomorrow, it is not looking too bad at all. High-pressure staying with

:26:39.:26:42.

us as we head into the weekend. Still that area of low pressure over

:26:43.:26:46.

the North Sea, could give a couple of showers through Saturday

:26:47.:26:49.

afternoon. Other than that, it stays dry and in the next system, it looks

:26:50.:26:53.

like it'll stay further south. Good news for the weekend, on the whole

:26:54.:26:56.

mostly dry, but it will get chilly overnight. Maybe a touch of grass

:26:57.:27:01.

frost. Don't go anywhere, stay at home.

:27:02.:27:04.

And before go - don't forget it's less than four weeks to go

:27:05.:27:07.

BBC Children In Need, and Pudsey is encouraging everyone

:27:08.:27:09.

to think about fund-raising on his tour of the East Midlands.

:27:10.:27:12.

This week he stopped off at a training session

:27:13.:27:14.

of the Leicester Riders basketball team.

:27:15.:27:16.

The players were preparing ahead of their match

:27:17.:27:18.

I think Pudsey impressed with his dribbling skills

:27:19.:27:21.

Of course it's all about Children in Need - Friday, November 18th -

:27:22.:27:30.

and fund-raising packs are available to download from the BBC website.
